Tip to make the Note snappier - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Go to Settings-> developer options->select Window animation scale and Transition Animation scale and change both to .5 instead of 1. Reboot and the phone is much snappier, at least it is for me.
You can also choose to disable both animations, to make it even faster.

This should make it feel snappier but I don't think it actually makes the phone faster. Sure the time it takes from one window to the next now is faster but this won't increase your benchmark results or anything like that. Regardless it does make it feel quicker; but once again it's an effect.

True, but app windows open quicker and the phone is more responsive

I read this on the SGS3 thread, and did it to my note, not a lot of difference.
John.

I actually did the opposite and changed the window animation scale to 2x. This makes everything feel much more fluent and strangely enough less laggy (for me). More of a polished experience

Is just a Feel..
Put the one you like more

Thanks makes a big difference actually

The default 1x is already nice to me, snap n smooth.

this is a better tip disable all of samsung's bloatware running in the background

Also depends on the rom. I always change to 0.5
The smoothest rom so far for scrolling and in apps browsing seems to be rocket 7.
None of the asop based roms seem to achieve this and this is
surprising.

I think go away from Samsung roms and into CM9 its smooth as butter. Running Apex launcher with live wallpapers have no effect on performance and everything opens as fast as possible.
Paranoid android is great with per app density settings so you can actually use the phone/tablet hybrid in that way, the stock samsung Rom's are like a big s2 for blind people, I can do with much smaller text and fit much more per screen then the over-sized touchwiz.

Google on hardware acceleration in ICS

Nice explanation from google regarding hardware acceleration, a must read one

Very interesting indeed.
What do you guys notice with enabled hw acceleration (build.prop tweak and set in most custom ROMs)? Do you think it is always smoother? Do you even feel a difference?
great find.. ICS is starting to infect my urge to upgrade
but it says that hw acceleration wont be available for nexus s and below..
so on default hw accel. is only enabled on dual-core phones?

It seems to be like that, also the GPU should be strong enough to handle it,else only cpu rendering
The article is enlightening, but comes across as an excuse for laggy interfaces on Android when one considers IOS manages much smoother transitions with apparently lower spec hardware.

A quick visual overview between and android device vs and iDevice.. would have the android device cry
This is one of the reasons I am really eager to have ICS on my sgs2!
I want to see some smoothness
I saw on Beyond3D linked Andrew Munn's thoughts to Dianne Hackborn's post

Its a bit of a downer and still a long ways to go.
At last. All this hw acceleration 'hacks', enablers, tweaks, bull****...
it really got on my nerve.
Can't say i've ever had a problem with smoothness on SGS2 with touchwiz. Seems it must be hardware accelerated. That's why the phone can do any live wallpaper I throw at it and won't slow down, lag or skip. Stock.
Throw on a home screen replacement like Launcher Pro, ADW or Go Launcher and live wallpapers are useless mind.
I-phones are nice and smooth, but that's because the whole screen is filled with lovely la la baby icons, you can't see the wallpaper, it has nothing running in the background, no widgets, the operating system stays the same with every iteration bar some crap additions like notification centres and Siri, and has no live wallpaper.
I know which phone I would choose.

i would love to know you are getting TW to run smooth without lagging, because mine lags like hell on fresh stock rom. especially when the wallpaper scrolls with the homescreen. TW just never worked for me.
I'm running cyanogen and never seen any lag, even with very heavy customization.

As said, twlauncher is really butter smooth even with a live wallpaper, the only problem with twlaucher is resizing and multi dpi. Twlauncher wont use fullscreen when using 200 or 180 dpi.

""UI rendering occurs on the main thread of an app
UI rendering has normal priority"""
As long as the task is running in cpu we can talk about threading and setting thread priority, but once the task switches to GPU(as in ICS) there will be no need for thread priority and where the rendering of UI takes place.
So if any apps makes use of hw feature in ICS, they should be smooth enough to run at 60fps for rendering.

Not sure about that.other launchers are very smooth.phone runs everything fine.what fault coupd there be thats making tw not as smooth as most describe it to be.
Agree with the posts that say TWLauncher is the smoothest on the SGS2, I've tried most of them. Live wallpapers have little effect on that smoothness, and that can't be said for other launchers.
Overall, the SGS2 is as smooth as the iPhone 4 I had.
However, I did play with a WP7 Lumia 800 the other day, and it is definitely the smoothest UI I ever used.
The ip4s is pretty smooth too... but I'd trade a tiny bit of smoothness for the sheer possibilities with Android.... but I have to say I was really quite impressed with WP7.
Was using my mobile clocked down to 500 mhz.. as a downside my go launcher started to lag like anything, switched to stock TW, to my total disbelief, the stock launcher is insanely smooth even when downclocked to 500 mhz. Stock launcher is purely hardware accelerated for sure.
I use hyperdroid which uses a build.prop tweak to enable hardware acceleration. Now even if i place go launcher's apk in system/app folder, still i cant see it running as smoothly as touchwiz. So is that tweak really working with other launchers. I deleted original touchwiz and rebooted but still go launcher lags a lot as comapared to tw. Anyone knows what exactly that tweak does?

Feeling Galaxy SII's screen performance is more faster than our Note.

Guys, when you play around with Galaxy SII's screen performance by installing many kinds of home launchers and try it all and doing the same on Note, you will notice that Note has a lot of bugged in screen performance especially on the speed scrolling while SII is very smooth. This is because our Note's screen resolution is bigger than SII. Have you guys noticed the same?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Same
I think so too. My mum has a GSII and I have the Note. I feel that hers is a little quicker as well...
Yes and I always jealous my wife' s2 too. Maybe upcoming ICS update for us should be more smoother than our stock gb.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Pretty much as you said, the screen resolution is the cause of it being "slower", more pixels=more power needed. Probably why they made it 1.4Ghz. Try using Franco's kernel and your Note will be as smooth as can be. ICS is super smooth well all the AOSP based ones of course. The leaked one was okay, not quite polished yet. Ik benchmarks aren't everything, but with Francos I usually got around 4800-5200.

Thank for your comment. This is really one of the good finding. From my first day usage of note and s2, I already noticed on the screen performance as I bought it on same day.
I really do not bother to play around with flashing or rooting as Im concerned my note could be bricked and that is the reason why I'm have been with stock gb over 2 months. But feeling sometime want to hack it too due to slow screen performance.

Funny I was thinking that my skyrocket was faster too. Kinda miss my skyrocket lol
I tried ADW Launcher and scrolling in the app drawer was really laggy.
On ADW EX however, it's smooth as butter.
I can't see the difference on my Note or a SGS2.
Also, I can't see any difference between both TouchWiz launchers in terms of smoothness.
Some games most definitely do lag. Where they don't on the SGS2.
Note: 1280x800=1.024.000
SGS2: 800x480=384.000
So the Note has 2.6666 times more pixels, but the gpu is the same ARM Mali400 in both devices.

You can try by:
Installing Go launcher on both devices, adding 6 home pages, putting the screen fully of go widgets like:
face book widget
twitter widget
email widget
Calendar widget
message widget and make sure you resize it to full screen for each widget in the home screen page. Also put some Samsung widgets like photo frame widget, App widget, news widgets and scrolling screen the same on both devices then tell me what u notice.
For TW on note & s2, I can say screen performance on note almost the same which is 93% of s2.
Do also try adw launcher on both devices and just scroll the screen and u will see the different too.

Ill give a few reason as to why I feel the screen performance is slower on the note as compared to the SGSII.
First, I think its because the note wasnt really as fine tuned as the sgs2 for perfect performance. I mean the hardware was really made for the sgs2 and they had a pretty good time to optimize it to perfection. Some original SGSII users will admit that when it was released it wasnt as smooth as some of the newer builds, meaning months after release it was performing crazy good. Same with note, the newest rom, lc1 is actually smooth as butter. I can only imagine it will get better with a fully optimized ICS rom.
Second, as others mentioned, the screen res, but i think with ics it will be no problem.
Third, this maybe just me, but i think because of how big the screen on the note is maybe thats why it seems slower. I mean on iphone or smaller screens ots harder to notice lag. On tablets its very easy to notice lag.

Oh yeah, what about comparing the iPad 2/3 and the iPhone 4S? I don't see any type of lag or time difference when using all 3. Sure the animation might take a micro second longer, but that is definitely not lag. HC on the other hand does lag, a lot, but when using ICS, I do see a noticeable speed bump.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4
I had a SG2 before the Note and it was zippier. But the bigger screen makes up for that.
Note - 3x higher resolution than S2. More processing power needed. Comparison is pointless. Either get this or S2. Move on and wait for ICS.

has zero lag. the Note does lag more. Its a pretty large screen though. I use the Cube animation with GoLauncher with 20 widgets and yeah that lags LOL
Lists don't lag at all. Only some heavy graphics. ICS will hopefully smooth things out a bit. but the screen size is worth the lag now and then.

I found the complete opposite. Stock for stock I think yes my Skyrocket was slightly faster doing something like flipping screens, but at most other things the Note feels faster to me. Especially the App Drawer, I always felt the app drawer load was sluggish on the skyrocket, regardless of Rom/Launcher used. With AOSP ICS on the Note the App Drawer is super smooth.

I hate touchwiz

I seriously hate the entire framework! lol. I want to get an AOSP rom already!
Not being impatient, just saying that touchwiz sucks compared to the android experience
What sucks about it? The custom vibrate for calls? The direct dial from a contract? The option to disable apps that you don't want to run? The ability to hide icons in the app drawer? The motion settings? The customizable lock screen icons? The lock screen weather? The lock screen news? The smart stay feature? The ability to use custom fonts at different sizes? The tap to top feature? Etc........
I really enjoy touchwiz, it just makes everything, shall I say, easier..

You can disagree all you want, that doesn't change what my experience was on my phone. TW is head and shoulders more smooth, fluid and fast. The only way I was able to get either of them close to TW in those departments was using Nova, but even then I had to have the speed set to "faster than light" and power saving mode had to be turned off....TW is smoother, faster and more fluid with power savings on compared to any of the launchers I've tried.
I like tochwiz. It's much better than Sense was on my Evo OG. Then again, I've always preferred stock plus root. It seems like none of the launchers or ROMs work as they should.

The recent apps/multi-tasking menu is sluggish/choppy/slow and it's annoying.

I'm coming from a GSM Galaxy Nexus. I loved that phone...I mean it was borderline weird how much I loved that phone. lol Anyway, I like this phone more. It's blazing fast, the hardware is better in every regard...it's just awesome. Which is why I find it incredibly annoying how sluggish the recent apps menu is. It's sluggish when it comes up and the screen fades, and swiping apps off the menu bar is just sort of sluggish and not fluid like it was on the Nexus.
I've tried it on my friends Int version and on my AT&T version, it performs the same on both. I'm curios if anyone else coming from a Nexus notices this?
I don't know why it bugs me so much (first world problems) but it really just seems like it should be fluid considering how much faster this phone is that my GN (on ICS, sold it before JB)
I actually just remove all apps when I use it just so they vanish fast and I don't have to witness the slow animation of swiping apps off the screen. Unlike my GN it does seem to swipe the apps off faster based on how fast I use my finger, but it still doesn't have the fluidity that my previous precious had.
Just ranting, chime in if you want.
I think is much because of the hold Down on the home button if you run aokp and add the nav bar is faster, also make sure you turn off s Voice double click

10.1 Pro Experiences & Performance Tips

I recently bought a Tab Pro 10.1 and I was quite disappointed with the performance of it. For a device that -- on paper, at least -- was really powerful, I felt like the entire experience was very sluggish and clunky.
I wanted to share a couple of tweaks I made that helped boost performance dramatically.
1. Ditch the Samsung launcher. As cool as some of those tiled screens looked, it felt really slow and choppy to me. I gave Nova Launcher a try (I've also heard good things about Apex and Launcher Pro) and was extremely impressed with it. The tweaks that yielded the best performance gains were:
Scroll Speed - Faster Than Light
Animation Speed - Faster Than Light
App Animation - Slide*
* The stock animation on the Galaxy devices [the window that starts out minimized and then grows in size] is very choppy; let me add that the "Icecream Sandwich" option offers even better performance, but I thought it looked a little tacky.
Because the device is running such a huge resolution, these animations still look fine when set to such a fast speed. On my phone (Galaxy S4), I toned the settings down a little bit, because they were too fast. On a huge tablet though, they feel great to me.
2. Tweak the Scale Multipliers
In order to do this, I had to unlock Developer Options. Unlocking this mode can easily be done without rooting. Simply go into Settings -> General -> About Device and click on "Build Number" tab 7 times. This will unlock Developer Options (it'll show up as an entry in your left menu). After unlocking this, go into it and change the following settings:
Window Animation Scale - 0.5x
Transition Animation Scale - 0.5x
Animator Duration Scale - 0.5x*
This settings netted huge gains. The tablet felt so much more responsive for me, especially with regards to animations. In particular -- and perhaps this is a complete placebo effect -- I felt that scrolling (web pages, app lists, etc) was dramatically improved. Sluggish scrolling has always bothered the hell out of me with Android devices. This seemed to help a lot (again, it could just be a placebo, but I genuinely think it helped).
After making these two changes, it seriously feels like a brand new device (okay, well, I just bought this 2 days ago, it already is a brand new device). I went from being extremely disappointed in the performance to blown away by how snappy / responsive everything feels now. I know the 10.1's are sort of lacking with the ROMs we have available, but these tips will help a lot. Please note that all of this is sort of generic advice -- you can find most of this info available on other sites. However, I just wanted to share the changes I made that netted me the most dramatic performance improvements.
I'm guessing a lot of people are probably well-versed in suggestions like this, so hopefully I'm not preaching to the choir.
I hope this helps!
Thanks a lot. I am looking to buy one. but can't decide which one I should get, the 8.4 or 10.1
I don't like that samsung cpu alot. And I think the 8.4 come with snapdragon 800. but I like the size of 10.1. sigh....
Thanks for the info. You're right, just switching to Nova Launcher (and rebooting) made a difference in the RAM usage. Tried your settings, they're nice and snappy. Plus I must admit having the launcher bar at the bottom feels a lot more natural.
I did not believe it really fast .. I do not recognize tablet .. thank you
This worked wonderfully!

The tablet is not necessarily "slow" per se, but it feels slow and sluggish. For whatever reason, stock Android animations have always been terrible. Have you ever used an iOS device before? I prefer Android for about a billion reasons, but one thing iOS absolutely nails is their animations in their user interfaces. Everything on those devices feels as smooth as butter. One thing I've found is that that this is all a matter of perception; for some people, it doesn't bother them at all. For others, it drives them crazy. It's subtle, but once you notice it, it's really annoying. It's almost impossible not to notice if you've used an iOS device for an extended period of time (I owned an iPhone for a couple years). Responsiveness is something that Google has focused on (check out search Google for "Project Butter" for more info).
With every Android device I've used, the animations have looked cheap and clunky. They're not smooth (and never have been). They are choppy and they stutter; the best way I can describe it is like when you're playing a computer game on high settings and your framerate starts to drop. It doesn't look smooth and natural anymore -- it looks inconsistent. Android animations often look like frames are missing.
With the stock settings, go to your home page and start cycling through the pages quickly. For me, whenever it loaded those tiled pages (the thing with the calendar/email widgets, or the digital newspaper page), there was a noticeable hiccup. Successive cycles through the home pages would often feel smoother -- it seems that the device must temporarily cache some of the rendered data for a while. However, when it's of memory and needs to render again, the stuttering returns.
Also, try opening an app. By default, it plays that animation that looks like a window maximizing from a taskbar. That animation was always very choppy for me. Again, it looked like it was missing frames. Using Nova Launcher, I've switched to the Ice Cream Sandwich-style animation (sort of looks like a tube TV turning on), and it feels way more responsive and instantaneous to me.
Again, none of these changes are actually speeding up the device. It's just lowering animation times so that things feel faster.
Fresh owner of Pro Tab 10.1 T520 here :fingers-crossed:
i'm also kinda disappointed, i've rooted, changed kernel for better performance ditch the Samsung bloadware but still kinda lagy
I'm really considering to replace it with Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) i need Snapdragon power
I already had a 8.4 and bought a 10.1 because they are selling them so cheap. After disabling all the bloatware, I think that the speed is just fine, no lags, stutters or whatever. Make sure you really disable everything. To me it's not a big difference in speed with the 8.4.
Hello everyone,
I'm waiting to receive my SM-T520 10.1, replacing a Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8010) broken.
I just tested these settings on my Note2 (GT-N7100). Antutu gives me before your adjustment in economic mode: 17941 And after with your settings. 18476, a real gain.
@ New tricks.
My SM-T525 runs fantastic with Cyanogenmod 11!
I've been hoping to get rid of Magazine UX and the rest of the bloat since I first fired up the device!
Hey guys,
i am about to get a 10.1 and i was wondering if i can use the multi-tasking feature (2 screens on the display) with Nova or Apex launcher or is it only for TouchWiz?
Best regards
I use it with Apex Launcher just fine.
Works fine with Nova too.
I tried these settings, along with cybertronics v5 kernel and graveds rom. I am not disappoint! Very impressive responsiveness and feels ridiculously smooth. Everyone should do this. Thanks!

I am about to get delivery of a 12.2 Tab Pro. Really excited at having all that real estate to play with. I travel a lot for work and can't wait to be able to watch movies on that monster screen. Anyone else here have one of these beasts?
BTW upgrading from a Asus Prime that served well and will now be handed down to my kid
