Soon Samsung will stop updating the galaxy s so should i install cyanogenmod 7 now or wait till the stop supporting it ...is it easy to install from gingerbread jvq I've looked at the instructions but didn't understand how to do it and is every thing working on the phone with cyanogenmod
Everything is included but the CyanogenMod for I9000 is still an unstable version. FM radio oes not work and there is a feww bug here and there.
To install it, you need to revert back to a Froyo firmware which include a bootloader because the Gingerbread bootloader is not compatible entirely with CyanogenMod. Then, you root your phone, install ClockWorkMod or any kernel that has it, download the ROM, put it in the SD Card, restart the phone in recovery, then install zip from SD Card, choose the Rom Zip file and everything should install correctly.
Here is a link to the whole process LINK
Don't forget to backup your apps, and other relevant information and more important, make a backup of your EFS folder in case your IMEI is screwed up during the upgrade.
You will need to flash back to a ROM with Froyo Bootloaders first, but the installation is now very, very easy....use my guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101534
As for the advantages, CM7 is the fastest and smoothest ROM available, with a high level of customization, some exceptional features like the Theme Chooser, and a very active development and user community.
The disadvantages are that the battery life usually tops out at about a day and a half between charges max, and certain hardware features don't work as well as they should, due to the fact Samsung won't release their sources. These include the 780p video camera (lower resolution films fine), FM Radio and TV Out.
IN the end, the only way to really know if CM7 is for you is to try it out and see. Some users ultimately say they prefer the Samsung ROMS while others, like myself, are addicted to the high performance and tweaks of CM7 (as well as the community).
Come by the CM7 thread in the Dev forum, read back a few pages to see what is going on and join the discussions.
Having CM7 on SGS is like owning a Ford GT40. Beatiful and powerful beast, but if you actually dare to use it, it'll probably break down or you run out of juice in the middle of nowhere.

Thats a great way of putting it
Made me laugh, There is an ounce of truth in there !!
Still a good ROM tho, a mega improvement over stock samsung roms at least.
Battery life for me is pretty much the same as stock, the performance is unrivalled and it has more functionality. For me it also more stable than 2.3.4 ROMs which have all kinds of dodgy bugs and random lags.
The battery life has been improved a lot in CyanogenMod, but it is still a bit high when using packet data.

It is as stable, or more stable, than any other ROM for this phone...
I dont find significant speed difference for Samsung JVQ, but it is more configurable, very usefull bits too, and it has the nicest theme, Honeycream, for someone that doesnt like green or blue themes...
The dialer and the camera apps are garbagge compared with samsung' s, but you can use the market like I did, got RocketDial and Camera360...
And you get a new version almost every night, good if you have nothing better to do then flashing the phone , plus they fix small errors and implement new features, Samsung is not doing that for the SGS any more...
EDIT battery is not a problem anymore...

Due to sentences like that I flashed lot of times cm7, just to see if there wasnt any battey drain while using 3g...and unfortunately I had to go back to sammsung roms cuz false reports...
I hope when you said that you mean that its not a problem for most people not only for you

Hi all,
for the last couple of days i've been thinking about giving CM7 a try. i've only ever used stock based roms so far and just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on the comparisons between CM7 and stock SE roms and what sort of experiences people have had with CM7.
many thanks
tom
basically both are ok but if you want the most gamepad compatibility stick with the stock SE firmware as CM7 tends to have more issues

It's not that dramatic, you can keep playing emulators and many current games, without any issue. It's a bummer for Gameloft and EA games though.
i like stock more because touchpads are not fully working on cm7
thanks everyone, been reading thru some of the posts on the cm7 thread and people seem to have random glitches that, although they can also happen on stock, have swayed me towards sticking with stock firmwares. add to that the possibility that the touchpads will be iffy at best. again, thanks to everyone who took the time to reply and offer their views on the subject
tom
p.s. the leaked ics rom had nothing to do with what i decided on. honest guv
Interesting thread.
I was going to switch over to a custom rom but this has kind of put me off.
Is this just for CM7? (regarding controls)
I have this phone only because of the controls, but feel like I'm not getting the best out of it with the stock rom. What rom should I be looking at if any?
Thanks!
I got fed up with the amount of bloatware and things I never used running in the background, so I gave the FreeXperia PROJECT rom a go, so far I'm loving it.
The only issue is the touchpads BUT there are games that have that driver built in (Age of Zombies, THE DEAD: Chapter One), apart from GTA3 I've yet to find a game I like that uses them (Dead Space and Fifa not my cup of tea).
I mainly use FPse (touchpads not needed) and have truly fallen in love with my Play.
Each to there own though
I just got CM7 FXP054 fully working, and overclocked to 1.6GHz, on my r800x last night. The touchpads don't work on GTA III, but do work every other game I play. I'm loving it and I'm getting suprisingly great battery life. I still wish r800x users had more roms and kernels to choose from.
the touch pads in gta3, the left one changes the radio station and the right one moves your aiming when your zoomed in the sniper rifle, so they are pretty useless, would be nice if you could move the camera or look behind, maybe steer.
ive been thinking about flashing since i want to overclock to improve gta3 and just have a basic functions, never tried CM before, does doom kernel have working touchpads?

I tried GTA 3 while on CM7 and it didn't even recognise when the control pad was slid out thus forcing you to use on screen controls, may have been fixed in recent builds though, really hope that touchpads get fixed asap, as soon as they do, CM7 is my daily driver forever!
This is with FXP054
There are things about CM7 that I love: the non-sony themes throughout, customisation options built into the ROM, custom kernel (could NOT get custom kernel working on my stock ROM) AND MY BELOVED CRT LOCK ANIMATION
There were three issues for me though that stop me from using CM7:
1. Battery life is atrocious! I can actually see the battery percentage dropping during normal use, nothing out of the ordinary running and it just drains, from 15 minutes of facebook, 10 minutes of twitter, 1 hour of watching shows with Moboplayer the battery had 20% left from a full charge 4 hours ago. With stock ROM the battery will be about 65% after all that (daily routine)
2. Sound output just sucks. I plug the phone into my car stereo for my drive to/from work, no matter how much I play with the equaliser and all of the sound settings audio playback sounds bad. The bass is distorted and it's a lot quieter than stock ROM. I experienced this same sound output phenomenon with a different handset running CM7 so I think it's a CM issue
3. Automatic screen brightness doesn't seem to work at all

The only problem of these that I'm experiencing is the last one. The auto-brightness is all over the place. My battery life is a little bit less but not enough to bother me, and I'm guessing that's from my overclock.
I started using CyanogenMod7 in Febuary last year. When I got my Play, I messed around with Stock ROM, and while it was slick, bloatware free and fast, and I was impressed, it lacked CM's little tweaks I had to have. The dodgy touchpad support is a nuiscance, but a minor one.

Noone besides you is able to. I gave the ROM you claim works with these games a try, and it didn't work at all for me.
I choose CM7 over stock since I don't play any games that are broken on CM. Would be nice if GTAIII worked, but it doesn't work well with stock, so I can give up that ghost until Rockstar better supports our device.
I will be returning back to my S2 (m250k) from the note. I had a few screen issues so I'll be getting a full refund from the vendor.
If anyone here is thinking about upgrading to the Note, feel free to ask questions. I'll provide any insight that I can.
Note experience (in comparison of having owned a S2):
N7000 stock.
Pros:
- Huge, beautiful screen
- Perfect phablet size, I never take my laptop home anymore
- Stylus and note taking is amazing
- Battery life, much much better
Cons (very subjective):
- Doesn't fit my lifestyle. I'm hardly home so I don't get to use it as a tablet as much as I'd like to
- Inconvenient to use as a phone/sms machine. On the s2 I can send texts with one hand extremely easily. Everything I can do with one hand. Note requires both hands most of the time. (Send button is on the very far right.. I use my left hand and my thumb can't reach it unless I'm risking dropping the phone.
- Hard to take it out of pocket when sitting down. I was thinking about buying a watch because I didn't want to check the time on my phone haha.
- Not a very good media player for use at the gym... too big
- Currently it seems 3rd party launchers (adw, go launcher, etc) are all laggier than stock TW. I'm sure this will be fixed in the future.
- Not sure if this is a pro or con, but getting used to this size makes other phones look like phones made for toddlers.
- Low quality videos are blocky. It looks like huge pixels of black on the screen.
I'm very surprised how big the S2 subforum is. This is the first time coming to this subforum although I've had the S2 for 6+ months. I rooted yesterday and tinkered with it a little yesterday and it feels like a brand new phone.
On another note, what are your favorite roms currently for the SG2? There are so many to choose from I don't know where to start. Currently rooted with lulz kernel for m250k e02.
Glad to be back.

Hey welcome back to the S2 world
Well for me, I'm running on VillainROM 3.0 with SiyahKernel 2.6.4 and Pikachu's Thunderbolt script 2.3.5 - battery life is superb, signal reception is great, i can't complain... even if I got the twitch to try something else sometimes, I don't feel much like it because this phone steals the cake!!
Thanks everyone =).
Unfortunately I can't a kernel that doesn't support m250k due to my carrier (i'm in korea). So I'm currently using lulz korean kernel.
Noob question:
lulz kernel has a recovery built in, but it also has CMW recovery built in under -recovery- menu.
Which one am I supposed to use to flash the rom?
The S2 forum is so awesome, but I feel stupid and overwhelmed here haha.
Criskelo Rom is simply amazing, haven't tried CM9 but CM7 was terribly buggy, random reboots which doesn't sound all that bad but gets tedious eventually believe me, also hotspot problems and bluetooth problems as well. Criskelo has an abundance of modifications built in as well as option to change kernel and modem builds on the fly. Take a good look at the thread before you choose anything else, oh and don't bother with ICS leaked builds yet, its terrible, in fact its terrible on my wifes nexus s as well and that's official ota.

Hey Guys!
I am pretty new to the world of flashing ROMs, and am trying to experiment as much as I can! I recently rooted my phone (myTouch 4g) to escape the HTC Sense bloatware and kind of escape the gingerbread environment and use custom ROMs that people have developed. Of course, I've had my phone since 2010, and its been working great since. Not looking forward to getting a new phone anytime soon (it does what I want it to do well).
That being said, I currently am experimenting out CM7.2, was curious to hear what ROMs people who use the myTouch 4G as their daily drivers use. I am considering trying out one of the ported CM10.1 ROMs later tonight.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you guys!

Last Cyanogenmod 7 nightly.
I might also recommend Coderzs 4.2.2 Slimbean, Team Inferno's ShenduOS 4.2.1, or my AoCP 4.2.2 lol.
For ICS I recommend Synthetic Nightmare's AOSPx. Also I'm porting a CyanogenMod7 Type of rom, but with more features
Whatever I tried to install on it (including few JB-based ROMs) I always go back to CM7. Anything else is either less stable or uses battery or something is not working well (like camera on JB).

I use Albinoman's 8/24 build of AOSP 4.3 / CM 10.2. It has a few very minor issues but in daily use I find it's very stable...
too stubborn
Too stubborn to use CM7 I fought installing it and keep working with SlimBean 4.3 even though it is still buggy, well mostly for me. I should just back down to 4.22, but hmm here comes that stubborn issue.
I was on a small vacation, and now am about ~7 days till I move into my college dorm and start my college life. Here are few things I figured I should mention:
I am currently using the CM10.1 AOSP JellyBean ROM by albinoman887 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40665477), so far, its been awesome!
Though, there are few concerns about this ROM as a daily driver:
1. The battery life, it really does die out way too fast. It obviously is a concern for me, being in college, I would like to have something mobile and something that can last me an entire day without having to plug my phone into a charging unit. Of course, I was not expecting a perfect ROM for battery life that would be capable of running the latest Android, so all in all, the battery issue evens out, and should not be a shocker to anyone trying out the ROM.
2. I currently am running everything off of a 8GB Micro SD card, which is now full (I am waiting for my 32GB card to come in within the next few days), but when I do use apps such as SnapChat, or Instagram, it prevents me from using my camera with various errors every time. I suspect this to be the full SD memory card, I will make sure to post an update on this issue.
3. The ROM itself is FAST. I mean FAST. It really sets a definition of "multi-tasking" on the myTouch 4G.
There is a new September update for this ROM (I am going to install this update once I get my new SD card) and will also touch on how the update is, and what was resolved. As of right now, this ROM is beautiful, does require a bit of elbow geese to configure the settings to your likings, but that is the payoff.
I have tried CM7 briefly, escaped the ROM, its the most stable ROM anyone can ask for, but I personally don't want to go back to Gingerbread.
Thanks a lot XDA forums for allowing the opportunity to mess with our phones!
I bought myTouch 4g about 2 years ago. Sense Rom was installed for most of its lifetime; mysense (stock), Sense 3, then Sense 3.5, and now sense 4.1. Currently using ViperTouch 2.1.4 sense rom it is the most stable sense rom I found where all the hardware are functional. Battery life has not bad when keeping in 2G mode. I switch it to 3G with I need to browse something. Before ViperTouch I used CM 10.1 from albinoman887 for about 3 month to try out JB, it was really smooth and clean lightweight. I decided to go back to Sense after headphone heatup, camera and mic not working properly. I tried out CM 10.2 Android 4.3 albinoman887, it was smooth for the most part, but i couldn't use it as daily driver same 10.1 issues were resolved. So Sense 4.1 ICS is my current daily driver.

Yes, but it's a little bit annoying so I'd go back to a bug-free version
And somehow the game I'm playing (Rage of Bahamut) doesn't display right in some screen.
Tried ShenduOS and everything looks great. Until I find the 'phone' is not working, lol.
Hey guys!
So, I have been rocking this current ROM for a while now! I must admit, I've had few problems recently, but so far it works and gets the job done. I am now in the process of debating if I should revert down to one of the most stable ROMs for this phone (CM7.2) or to continue rocking this current ROM and try to see if I can help in terms of fixing current issues.
My classes start tomorrow! I will post an in-depth update on my issues this weekend!

At least you don't have the screen flicker bug also.

I was referring to how you are trying to fix the headset issue overall, not how you have any bugs in your roms.
Now I've been using PACman_GLACIER 19.3 for 2 weeks. Very stable, fast and no bug (except sometimes when it boots up, Link2SD notifies me to hot reboot to make SD partition mount)

Especially those of you who like ViperTouch. They are from a Chinese forum so you'll need to translate but the ROMs can be set to English on setup.
I might call it an end with my current ROM... it is currently becoming way too unstable for my abilities as a daily driver. Current issues include:
1. Battery life - I literally drop from 100% to 60% in a matter of 2 hours only using Wi-Fi for browsing the New York Times.
2. Phone screen flickers when locked (may be linked to battery life)
3. Certain apps that require a camera just do not cooperate
4. Green like in all pictures + picture quality not the same versus when the ROM was installed freash
5. Crashes and freezes a lot
Overall, this ROM was good, but as time progressed, its performance decreased as well.
Currently about to try Albinomans latest Jelly Bean ROM, or even try out the AoCP rom!
Just wondering what Rom people are running who are concerned with battery life. I listen to music and podcasts quite often. Right now I'm using Dan's google edition rom and I love the layout and speed but I noticed my phone getting quite warm and I'm concerned.
Cheers,
T

Strange, that ROM behaved well for me. Any chance you have an misbehaving app?
Besides Dan's GE ROM, I've had great luck w/ Slimrom.
Another idea is that beside the rom, try using ktoonsez's kernel (if you're not already). With the tweaker app that comes with it you can load a bunch of profiles to turn your phone into a battery saving miser or power hungry gaming machine and everything in between.
(During the day I don't use my phone much and load a battery saving profile then at night switch to performance. While I charge the phone every day, I could definitely go at least two.. maybe more.)
iBASTiD' Mapleleaf rom works well also although I can't tell which phone you have or where your from. His rom is basically stock 4.4.2 with a non stock kernel (Adam's) In the addon section he provides a flashable file to remove the standard samsung apps if you like it a little skinnier.... I have been running it for a couple of days now and it is solid...
Forgot to mention... it does apps2sd also...
There isn't a "best" rom, but with that being said I love Vanir for the nightly updates.
