Ok, I'm not a root/ROM newb - former moto milestone and current Gnex user, rooted and ROM'd both without trouble - but trying to get my wife's i9000m going is driving me mental.
boot to download mode? nothing happens on my comp (win7) - odin3 1.85 doesn't detect it. regular boot? mounts ok in windows (odin sees it), but MTP fails.
i was hoping for a simple, step-by-step guide to root/rom + troubleshooting, but it looks like the i9000 is a complete cluster**** of epic proportions.
can anyone help me figure this **** out?
my goal is getting CWM and 4.0.4 (AOKP or CM9, preferably) going.
any help is appreciated.

For win 7, I think you can try this method
1) select MTP USB device in Device Manager, select Update driver, then manually select USB Mass Storage.
2) open C:\WINDOWS\INF\wpdmtp.inf. ( copy and save it , elsewhere ) After that delete it , Windows will no longer try to install MTP USB device but installs regular mass storage.
If it fails restore your copy

You don't need MTP to flash CWM. Disable it by going to Settings > Wireless and Networks > USB Connection Settings (or something similar to this address)
Optional, I guess?
0.1 Disable MTP and put it to USB Storage
0.2 Enable USB debugging
1. Download firmware for phone. Depends on you.
2. Download Odin (latest version if necessary); Works on XP and Win7
3. Put into Download Mode by Turning off your phone then boot it up whilst pressing the Volume Down + Home + Power button. Do until Yellow triangle is shown
4. Connect to PC via USB. Odin should recognize it.
5. Flash firmware. Put the necessary files into exact places within Odin. The filenames will usually give a hint on where to put those
Optional: Flash custom ROM/Tweaks afterwards.
TO FLASH CWM: Usually, custom ROMs
0.1 Download Rooting file (.tar) for current firmware; should contain CWM already. Do not extract or unzip.
0.2 Open Odin in PC.
1. Boot into Download mode via adb or by turning off the phone then boot it up by pressing the Volume Down + Home + Power button as before
2. Flash the Rooting file via the PDA "slot" in Odin (.tar file goes to PDA)
3. Walah, you have CWM
Now, wasn't that easy?

I've searched all over the posts and google and have yet to find a solution. I am a MAC user and trying to restore fascinate. I am stuck at Samsung screen. I can get into Clockwork Mod Voodoo.
When i did my last backup I never enabled USB Debugging. I can not ./adb into device, nor can I use ODIN on friends PC. (No Device) Same result with Heimdal "Failed to detect Device" I would just like to get back to stock. Is there a step by step guide to recover similar to ODIN get you back to stock but for a MAC. Or since i never enabled Debug mode I should just use my warranty?

Morning, I'm attempting to resolve the same issue. I have the "Yellow Shovel" Andy but I can't get Odin to recognize the device.
The device was fine and Odin was working last night, however I do believe I did something ridiculous last night. I tried flashing my phone with a Nexus S rom and succeeded. HOWEVER, the only buttons that are recognized are the "Home" and "Menu" soft keys.
I can boot into the 2.3 Nexus S rom but I can't get the hardware to recognize anymore.
UPDATE: I managed to get the USB to recognize. I'm not completely sure how, it just started recognizing it after fidgeting with the cable. I'm not flashing it back to stock using ODIN and the following post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867648
UPDATE: The link above worked. I recommend using the stock USB cable that comes with the phone. Now that it's back.. I'm curious to know what I would have to change for 2.3 to work.. hm..

After I flashed or upgraded to the leak Android 2.3.4 from this guy http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232703 I tried to root my phone and I found one suggestion that calls Fugu Root, but it doesn't work for me. And then I try to figure out other way to do, And I have to thank you this guy to give me a kernel StocKH3 Kernel with Clockwork Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242533) while I was looking for StockH3 kernel. And now are you ready to take a risk with me? If so, here we go....
1. open your Captivate phone that's running the leak Android 2.3.4 I897UCKH3, and go to android market then download superuser and install it on your phone, make sure that you have done this step.
2. Go to download StocKH3 kernel with Clockwork Recovery from this guy or download here to make sure you have the right one.
3. Do you have Odin3 1.81? if not, download here if you already have then skip this step
4. once you downloaded everything and installed superuser, go to download su-2.3.2-efgh-bin-signed.zip for gingerbread and here a link
5. Now turn off your phone and open odin3 1.81 as administrator, then connect your phone into usb cable while you'are connecting press the volume up and down together to get into download mode (you can do another way to get into download mode it doesn't matter).
6. make sure that your phone connected to computer, you will see the yellow on the box, when you connected.
7. now put put the boog_kh3_kernel3.tar into the PDA section, then click on Start button and wait until you finished and your phone will reboot.
8. go to upload file u-2.3.2-efgh-bin-signed.zip into your micro SDCard, or your internal storage. then reboot into recovery mode, the best way to do this is "adb reboot recovery" you will see Clockwork Recovery mode
9. Now, Go to select Install zip from sdcard >> toggle signature verification >>> Choose zip from sdcard.
10. then go to select one the one you've uploaded on your sdcard or wherever you uploaded to (u-2.3.2-efgh-bin-signed.zip). then select yes to install it.
after you finished install u-2.3.2-efgh-bin-signed.zip from the recovery mode, reboot your phone and you are now rooted.
have a good luck, it worked as well. sorry about my english also.
Thanks.

Does your computer have a driver of your phone? Have you done anything about Odin before, you can try another version of odin, it might work. But I don't know why you computer doesn't recognize your phone. If you never done anything about odin, I would suggest you to download Kies which is the updater firmware management for your phone, then you will have driver after you install this software.

Yes, I have used Odin many times. ODIN and ADB 'see' (yellow COM port, adb devices = attached device) my phone when it is in normal mode, but as soon as I enter download mode (jig, 2-button) it loses the connection.
I suspect I am missing something, like maybe bootloaders, but not really sure.
I used UCKH3 Heimdall-One-Click [beta] to recover my semi-stoned phone. It (I897UCKH3/2.3.4) works pretty well: voice, SMS, 3G (DL is great: ~ 5 Mbps, UL just OK, previously ~ 2 Mbps, now ~ 500 Kbps, so maybe not the best modem for my provider?), but still un-rooted.
sounds too simple to be a solution but have you restarted your computer? I've had some odin issues like that and a simple reboot fixes the problem. The other fix that I've personally seen is to change your USB port. If you're connected in the front of the PC, move it to the back and see if that helps.

I think the standard drivers from Samsung that are used for Odin and the Heimdall drivers conflict. Try removing the Heimdall drivers if you want to use Odin.

^ What he said. If you are on windows Heimdall drivers will conflict with Odin
Thank you december30, nyydynasty, gibson3659, prbassplayer .
I am rooted.
I de-installed the Heimdall Drivers per the directions (below), re-booted, de-installed the Samsung USB Drivers, re-booted, re-installed the Samsung usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64 (different drivers than I had used previously), re-booted.
Then I could 'see' my Captivate, when in Download Mode, with both ADB and ODIN.
I guess my next question is, which ROM should I use? (I only ended up with this 'stock' ROM as a result of trying to recover my phone from a persistent soft-brick situation.)
I found these Heimdall Driver un-install instructions:
Driver Uninstallation Instructions:
1. Put your Samsung Galaxy S into download mode by holding Volume Down + Home + Power.
2. Plug your phone into your PC.
3. Open up Device Manager on your PC (Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager).
4. Under "Libusb (WinUSB) devices" right click on "Samsung USB Composite Device" and chose Properties.
5. Go to the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
6. Chose to browse your computer for the driver.
7. Chose to pick from a list of devices drivers on your computer.
8. Pick the original Samsung Composite driver, press next and then follow the prompts.
9. Done

Sounds stupid, but this happens to me when I plug my phone into the front USB ports on my PC. Plugging it into the back (directly to the pc) works.

Try that:
You can use this software to repair Your dead Samsung i9505 and similar (m919, i337, L720 etc)
Note, You need to install QHUSB Qualcomm drivers first.
After flashing with this software, You need to flash phone with official firmware and PIT file, otherwise phone will be dead again, and You'll need to repeat the process.
If You get errors reported by this software (command prompt window), You'll have to replace the eMMC chip first.

Try a different data cable it worked for me
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
Well I've had some problems too today and there a couple of things you might want to try (I'm sure one of them will fix it):
- Pick a different USB port (preferably one in the back)
- Try a different USB cable (I used one from my Nexus 7, didn't work. Tried with the original S4 cable, worked)
- Uninstall Kies and the Samsung drivers from you control panel -> programs
- Download the Samsung USB Drivers again (google it) (do not install them yet)
- Download and install USB Deview (google it) and delete every driver of Samsung you come across in the list (just right click and click delete)
- Disable your internet access and reboot
- After rebooting install the Samsung Drivers (without an internet connection)
- Plug in your phone after you've installed the drivers and enable USB Debugging
- Reboot
- Enable your internet connection again
- Try to flash again in Odin (it should work now)
If this won't work, I don't know what will. A different USB port, cable, fresh/original drivers (not the ones Windows Update may try to install for you), etc is probably what you'll need to get it working.
thanks for every ones help we installed a fresh copy of windows 7 and installed every thing again and it worked fine defo must of been driver related
Cheers now flash away like there's no tomorrow
Hello!
I have royally F***** up my phone so if there are any geniuses out there, I will be so happy to hear your thoughts on my issue.
Here's my problem and I am open to any solution:
-My phone isn't rooted so CMW, TWRP, and any other custom recoveries are not an option.
-USB doesn't work
-Factory reset doesn't help (I've tried both ways)
-Any installs via extSD get the signature fail notification
-USB debugging is checked
-Allow apps from unknown source is checked
-App verification is unchecked
-Any kind of app that is meant to root my phone doesn't work
Thank you in advance!
Can you put it into download mode? If you can then you should be able to odin a custom recovery or odin the stock rom back to your phone and start from scratch. Have you downloaded the Samsung USB drivers? Only use the cable that came with your phone, others may not work or charge only. Also, try a different usb port.
Signature fails because you are on the stock recovery and the file you are trying to install hasn't been signed by Samsung.

I can put it into download mode but my phone still isn't recognized. I've tried many different cables, computers, usb ports, etc. I've downloaded the drivers from people posting them on here or on samsungs website directly but either way, i'm using windows 8 and windows 8 does it automatically. this wasn't a problem from the beginning, this just recently started happening and it has nothing to do with my computer or any computer for that matter.
Have you installed the drivers 'as administrator'?
Have you used Odin before?
How did you do what ever it is you think you did?
Have you tried Odin'ing a complete stock .tar? Here's one. Just download zip and extact the .tar.md5 file.
When you launch Odin are you right clicking and running as admin?
Did you put your phone into download mode before connecting it to a RUNNING Odin session. Meaning start Odin on PC as admin. Then put phone into download mode and then plugging it into computer.
Seems you can get into your phone right?
You may also try copying the extracted .tar to your SD card (via PC adapter or whatever) putting the SD card back in your phone and then trying to flash it via Stock Recovery.
Always nice when someone asks for help and then never reports back.

Removed Kies3, tripple check that debugging is on and recovery lock is off.
Still, Odin finds the device when it is not in recovery mode (sideload),

I did this on a new computer that never saw an Android device before.
Odin does not detect my device despite following this advice and the one before.
I installed Kies, made my device known to the Windows Device Manager, rebooted, connected device while in sideload-mode and waited until detection was finished. The next step was firing up Odin3 v1.85 and my device didn't show up, but i was able to use the adb sideload which failed with "Verification Error" when installing a new recovery or rom.
Could it be that the phone being branded by T-Mobile Germany changed the game even though the model is just plain SM-N9005 ?
Is there another option to root this device or preferably install some other rom without Odin?
Never ran into so much trouble with my Asus eeePad, the Samsung I9000 or the HTC One X.
