When I go into CWM and install abyss kernel.zip, it hangs on 'Installing update...' then after a while the phone reboots, no kernel is installed, why is this?

Try CF Root gingerbread kernel.
I assume you want a safe kernel to flash/restore something right ?
I managed to flash it using ODIN PC, when I do it this way my phone hangs at the Galaxy Note logo screen with yellow triangle, the only way to get out of it is to reflash a rom.

Are you trying use abyss as kernel for ics? Because abyss is for gb, use speedmod k3-3 as kernel for ics. It is a safe ics kernel.

You have tried to cook up a Rom yourself and yet do not know that GB kernel cannot get an ICS Rom to boot up? C'mon man.

To be truthful...I never knew that, really! the main purpose of flashing Abyss kernel was because I was following instructions to flash a custom rom so I can 'Full wipe'.

And that's it: full wipe. After that you immediately flash an ICS Rom/kernel of your choice and it overwrites Abyss; you don't try to boot up ICS on Abyss.

Go into recovery.
Flash a GB kernel (franco in my case)
reboot into recovery (do not boot into android: menu: Advanced->reboot recovery)
flash GB rom, of restore backup. (backup in my case)
reboot
Worked for me.
I was on ICS. went back to GB using the above method.
Ah kernel first. Okay illl give it a shot thanks

Either stock ROM or cooked. If you use stock, you will have to root again, so make sure you use a stock rom which can actually be rooted or you'll have to flash another. I think it's just easiest to go straight to a cooked ROM.

You cannot flash a stock rom through Recovery, you'll need Odin to flash a Stock ROM.

Had my Note for about 5 hours now and still using stock !!!! I dont understand the different methods, One says use ODIN, the other says avoid ODIN. One says flash in stock recovery, One says downgrade to lower GB then upgrade...
Totally different than the SGS1 / HTC forums

Simple, Downgrade to a older GB using PC odinthe rom must be one of the 'root able' roms found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Then once you have downgraded use this method to gain root and cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 (scroll to the bottom of the op)
Thanks man, But on another thread (CleaNote ROM) it says this:
Flash STOCK ICS with PC odin
boot the rom
reboot to dowload mode
flash CF kernel
reboot rom
copy CleaNote ROM zip to phone
reboot to CWM
install zip

Do i have to do that ^^ Or can i just root my current stock GB ROM + Add CWM, Then flash Abyss Kernel, Then flash the ROM of my choice ?
Its these conflicting posts what puzzle me lol.

If you are looking to flash a rom that has step by step instructions on how to install it then follow those, as some roms require different instructions.
But if you want to gain root and CWM and are not sure on what rom you want first what I have said is the easiest way to go
Well that was just what i read on one of the posts, In the OP it just says flash from CWM, Providing you have a safe kernel and root.
My current ROM is LC1 which is one of the unrootable ROMs, and my DLoad for ICS is almost complete !
I think i will just flash ICS then a safe kernel, Then the CleaNote ROM. Im just so scared about the brickbug lol. I will wipe before i update, As GB is safe right ?

ICS flashed fine
Got root and CWM, Just installed Abyss kernel. Now doing a nandroid, Then Im gonna flash CleaNote,
Will avoid the wipe option even tho it says its safe in this kernel, Just not ready to take the risk yet.
Thanks for the advice, Been debating whether to take the plunge all day.
EDIT: spoke to soon, Now Im stuck on Splash screen, Dunno why, The nandroid was successful, But i cannot boot back into recovery now.
Looks like I'll have to flash the ICS again.
Abyss kernel is for gb not for ics. When cleanote said a safe kernel it is speedmod k3-3 or franco r3,r4,r5& r6. They use abyss kernel in wiping data in ics recovery just to be safe and the right step are 1. Flash the abyss kernel 4.2( after that do not wipe or flash your custom rom yet, very important to remember it will superbreak your phone), 2. Go to advanced and find reboot to recovery and click it and do the wiping their, its safe 3. and then you can flash the custom rom. In the case of cleanote theirs no need use abyss if you already flash speedmod or franco kernel in your ics before flashing the cleanote rom because cleanote 1.02 will automatically wipe your data.
Thanks man !! I'll get the hang of this one day
Im on rooted stock ICS now, With CF Kernel, So I just need to flash speedmod kernel( I loved their kernels & ROMs on the SGS1) reboot recovery, Then install CleaNote ?
I almost got it right lol
After flashing speedmod k3-3 click REBOOT SYSTEM NOW(get out of the recovery first) then check in the setting if you really have the speedmod kernel in your system running to be sure and enter recovery again and flash the cleanote rom, thats it.
Hi Everyone,
I have stock rom with franco kernel. Yesterday I reverted back to stock kernel and noticed that it lags now when I wake it from the unlock screen. I did a factory reset, but the lag is still there. This was never there when I had it from the begining. Should I flash the factory image?? Can the backup stock kernel get corrupted?

after using franco kernel, you have to reflash your rom then kernel. franco kernel hides tweaks inits ramdisk. flashing another kernel on top will not change this ramdisk, so you have to flash your rom first(no wiping anything).
As I stated above...can I just fastboot then flash the factory image??

You can fastboot flash the OEM boot.img; I'm guessing you fastbooted Franco's kernel?

Flash this reset kernel which has the INITFRAMS.
all will be ok.
You don't have to reflash the whole phone.

Could you clarify this for me, If in the future I need to do it? So, after leaving franco kernel, i.e. If I'm using franco kernel and wanna go back to completely stock again; before flashing stock I'll need to re-flash the current rom that I'm using, to re-flash the rom's kernel and this way replace the ramdisk to the stock from rom? If I'm wrong, please correct me; you guys are awesome!

yes, kinda. reflashing your rom will replace francos ramdisk. all the other kernels use anykernel, so dont have ramdisk included. generally, its only after using franco kernel do you want to do this, the other kernels you can flash right over each other. anykernel kernels grab the available ramdisk. theres plenty of stock/aosp rooted roms here on xda, any of them should work for you.

Why would you flash a stock kernel on a custom rom? No benefit in that, only possible trouble. It is better to stick with the kernel that comes with the rom.
I've been trying many things to no avail. I am able to get recovery on my i9505G (which I have read is built into the CWM version now for the i9505) and it seems to work fine. I have the 01/08 nightly CM11 on the phone, but whenever I reboot and select "recovery" it gives me this error. Sometimes if I hit the restart the device, it will boot into recovery correctly. I've even started fresh by wiping the entire phone and the multiple partitions (from having started on 4.2) and flashed a fresh 4.4.2 stock (rooted) tar through odin. From there I flashed the recovery, installed CM as I always have, but it is still happening.
What am I doing wrong?

That is the weird thing, it does have the custom CWM recovery on it, but this happens when I click to reboot into recovery in CM11. I've tried reinstalling CWM numerous times, but I still get this same situation after the first time.

Well here is what I am trying to do. Root isn't a problem, but getting recovery on it is. I've been using the jltflexx builds of CWM and Cyanogen because I read that it was built into it. They both install with no problem and I can get up and running. The problem I run into is getting back into custom recovery and I get that picture error above when I try. I don't know if the custom recovery is getting overwritten by something or what, but it does get installed otherwise I wouldn't be able to get CM11 on it in the first place.
