[Q] Overclocking ... to clear some points - Acer Iconia A500

Hi!
I want to overclock my A500 and i try to change as less as possible.
So I started from the stock 4.0.3 rom, rooted the A500 and installed
setcpu. Unfortunately I cant set the max beyound 1000Mhz. So I am
a little bit stuck here ....
There are threads about overclocking-able kernels ...
Custom Roms ...
Bootloaders ...
What do I have to do to get a A500 with "near" stock rom functionality and the ability to overclock .... or can I modify the stock to oc ability?
regards Martin

Have to have the oc kernal.

As Shaun stated, you have to have a kernel built for OC/UV. A factory stock kernel does not have this capability.
If you have an a500, EZ_Terry has some recent OC kernels for flashing through CWM recovery. I believe you may also find it on Civato's thread as well. (same kernel).
A500 OC/UV kernels are in new development, so you won't find a lot of choices yet.
One note about OC/UV,,,, make your settings, then play with the tab for some time to ensure no random reboots, or other issues. Find the speed that works best for you. Usually 1504 is about the highest you want to go, and stay stable. Be careful about too much UV (undervolt).
Then, and only then, when you are satisfied, should you select the option "apply at boot". During testing, you can reboot, and it goes back to the defaults.
If you select the apply at boot option, that's where it stays. This can cause issues if you have unstable selections, and are forced to re-install the rom to fix it.

Depending on what you use the tablet for, oc is often over rated.. Solid roms like flexreaper I find require none to be smooth as can be.. Uv. However can really save some juice

[Q] What are the risk of overlock in SG3?

I Want make a overlock in my Sg3,but what are the risk?
-Greettings-
crashing more than usual is the main problem i think, lowered cpu life span, possible overheating that can cause more trouble in short-the risks are the same as when OC-ing a pc cpu. I just flashed kyrillos 4.1 OC and everything works fine, faster and smoother and my phone did not melt or caught fire. The clock was 1300MHz but i lowered it to 1066, just to make shure everything goes well.
I see in the market apps whos: cpu master. It is ok to do a overlock?

it won't work without a custom kernel. U need to flash a new rom, Kyrillos and Apocalypse have OC versions but Apocalypse is still in beta version. Once u do that u can overclock, i'd recomend setcpu - if rom developers are recomending it than it has to be good,
You need a kernel with built-in ext4 capability. The custom ROMs mostly have one. If you are running a stock kernel, you must install one, e.g. from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978823

[Q] Overclocking with stock Rom 2.22.405.1

Hello Together,
Now after Alpharev-X has done such great work and open new possibilities for
us, i am thinking about rooting my wildfire for the purpose of overclocking.
Im happy with my stock rom, but would like to experience some
performance enhancement. But there are some things im not really sure about.
The first Question i have is:
Is it really worth to root the phone regarding to the enhancement of the performance that can be reached with a overclocked stock rom.?
(Im wishing to have some smoother menue performance while using some apps like k9 and other applications of daily usage, scrolling through contats etc,...... not gaming at all!)
The second Question i have is:
I have read about some users having problem after installing a custom kernel, like missing some functions like wifi or usb-problems and so on) Is there any user-experiance about which kernel is properly working with the stock rom mentioned in the title?
So it would be great if some user could post their experiance with overclocking a stock rom and which kernel they prefer and have tested.
Thanks in advance for all comments

If you don't want to switch to a custom ROM there's a really cool app called 'SetCPU for Root Users' which, after rooting your phone, lets you overclock your CPU as you wish. A word of advice, go easy on the Max CPU frequency!
Alpharevx doesn't root your phone, it just sets the S flag on your HBOOT to OFF. To root your phone take a look at this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130044

It'll still need a Custom Kernel.
OP, You can go for Arco's nFinity kernel modified by johseen for Sense ROMs (Listed first under Kernels List in the Wildfire Index Thread). Overclocking does improve general performance, but, its the gain is certainly not as much as the overclock % suggests,
to overclock, you´ll need to change the kernel, and to change the kernel, you must have installed clockworkmod , and to install it, you have to root your phone

Fastest rom to overclock with?

Hey,
I see a lot of people using CM7 is this really the best one?
Also till how many mhz I can overclock on that one?
Yes Cm7 IS really great, in fact you can customize almost everything, and I really like that feature...
As for overclocking you can overclock I think to max of 768mhz(if I'm wrong somebody please correct me)...maybe you can a little bit more but I think it is kernel related...
Hope it helps,
Best regards

Irrespective of which ROM you choose, it is the kernel which allows (or disallows) you from Overclocking. Till date, there are 2 primary kernels which are available - HCDR.Kernel by Jacob and nFinity by arco, and both OC support upto 768MHz. (I think Deep-Knight has recently developed a new kernel for his ROM, which allows OC upto 600MHz)
Because of this, you can overclock your stock ROM also, if you so wish, by simply flashing a custom kernel.

Hi!
Which kernels can I use for original rom, if I want to overclock? HCDR, or Deep, or what? It will make the phone instable, or not?
Thank You!

You can use any. nFinity MC4 offers more features though, like Smartass Governor. It can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995301
Else, you can use HCDR Kernel also, if you wish, and decide for yourself which suits you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798471
It shouldn't make the phone unstable at all. But, in any case, make a Nandroid Backup beforehand.
Thank You
Well M using hell fire .. Cm7 based ....
Which is stable till 729 Mhz overclock m using max 729 and min 490 (I guess)
Phone is Much faster than before and love playing angry birds
I read all the 2 posts, but Im not sure to change the original slow kernel, for a faster. All have some bugs, battery life, wifi, etc...
I dont know, which could be better for the stock rom, or which could be better than the original.
Anyway, I want to try one of that, but I dont know which.
How can I flash just the kernel? And also back up my programs with titanium, or mybackup?
It clears everything like the rom flashing?
Ok, I made it, its cool, and faster. Thanks for the help.
is the overclocking "app" in standard cm7? Or i must go to market or anything else to download it?

[Q] thor 3.9R4 compatible with taboonay 3.01?

My A500 was running Taboonay 3.01ROM without any problem. When watching some 720P video it tented to stutter here and there so I though I should look into overclocking it. I downloaded kernel 3.9R4 for custom ROM from tegraowners and installed it. The tablet stopped working after reboot. I could still see the lock button but I was not able to unlock the screen. It seemed the touch screen did not work any more. I then did a reset boot with power-vol-up-gyro combination and it is now on the "Welcome" screen. But the "start" button is grayed out and it does not respond to any screen press, like a frozen windows pc.
IS there any way I can push the old working kernel into the tablet. maybe using adb push?
Thanks,
Jay
Tabooney 3.0.1 is ICS i.e. thor's 3.9R4 kernel is incompatible because it is for Honeycomb. Reflash another full ROM.
Thanks for the info. How do I flash another ROM? I normally ran ACER recovery to boot into recovery. I can not do that any more so what are the steps for installing a new ROM?
Thanks,
Jay

Here we go again. Let's keep it clean, shall we?
I was able to re-install the taboonay 3.0 rom by Power + vol- into recovery and install it from external SD card. Everything is back to its original working order.
Thanks!
Now a question, is there a kernel I can use on ICS to overclock my A500?
No. This is stock kernel with all the custom ICS ROMs here (sources are still unavailable). Thor's project is AOSP and comes with custom kernel which is overclockable.
I was looking in the Xoom threads, and found this kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488059
It says "Including overclocking to 1.7GHz", but when I load the kernel atop my rom, I still don't get the CPU to show anything more than 1000mhz.
Does anyone know if there some type of module that has to be loaded now-a-days? Some type of configuration change required? Or do we just need to wait for a custom kernel that has this all worked out a head of time.
Overclocking stock ICS ROMS
I've been annoyed that I can not keep my ARM running at 1.5GHz as well and was looking at the manual settings in SetCPU. I think (I haven't tested yet and might be wrong) you can make a simple text file to specify the CPU speeds. Has anyone else tried this and maybe can supply a copy of their text file?
I'll try later tonight and report back if it works if no-one else gets back 1st

Now there's a good one. Let's load a Motorola kernel on top of an Acer Rom with Acer hardware.
You're lucky you didn't bork the tab
Then we;d have to refer you to the Zoom forum to get it unborked.
Overclocking using any app requires a Kernel that actually supports this feature -- which Acer ICS Stock 2.6.39.4+ doesn't. As Acer didn't release the source for a Kernel that was never meant to be used by the general public (It's a Leak, remember?) we can't add this feature. Flashing another kernel is probably a dumb idea also, as it almost definitely isn't going to anything other than brick your tab (If you try anyway, at least do a NAND backup). Once Acer releases the sources for their ICS kernel (which won't be before they release the ROM) OC will be possible using our own, hacked, kernels -- until then, be patient (or use HC).
so there's still no custom kernel for taboonay 3.0.1 for overclocking?

EZTerry's OC kernel in the Dev section should work. "should". It's an ICS kernel.

[Q] Using 3G on my A501 freezes system

Hi,
I am on Taboonay 2.2 Rom (HC 3.2.1) and everytime I use the internal 3G of my A501, the system ends up freezing.
At no particular activity but when accessing Data, android freezes. Only option is to reboot...
Very very annoying.
Any idea where it could come from / possible fix ?
Usually occurs while undervolting too much...
Hmmm, i am on taboona's 2.2 rom with latest thor kernel. I have made no oher changes / tweaks.
Would there be better kernel / specific tweaks for A501s in order to get 3G to work well?
Can you tell me how i go about tweaking voltages? I looked into setCPU but it only talks about reducing CPU votltage...
More help would be greatly appreciated.
Up please help me.

Your version of Taboonay, more than likely uses the 3.7+ Kernel from Richard Trip. Unfortunately, this specific kernel has not enough board voltage to sustain internal 3g. As a result, your display will either Freeze, or tablet will go into Sleep of Death.
Both require a reboot.
The best kernel for your tablet (a501), would be RichardTrips 3.4+. This will allow proper voltage to the system board, while giving a little better battery compared to a Stock Kernel.
You can search the Dev thread for the post by RichardTrip, containing links to his HC kernels. I believe he already has them in a flash.zip file for CWM. Just wipe Dalvik and flash through CWM or RA Recovery.
Any questions, post back.
Thanks man, you solved it!
Looking forward to getting my hands on a performing and stable ICS rom for A501 with working 3G... Meanwhile I am happy with what I have.

Yes, Taboonay has been around for awhile. In fact it was the first Rom I installed. But as you discovered, when it went to the newer kernel, is when the issues with the 501 started.
Not a lot of kernel Devs, and only for the 500. Although 501 can use them for the most part, the UV is too much for the 3g. A pity at least one kernel Dev would own a 501 but they all own 500's.
I've got a stable ICS. But, the battery life isn't the best. Nothing can do till the next beta release for the 501. Also, I will not support HC Bootloaders, so folks will have to upgrade to an ICS bootloader. Not going to get into the mess of supporting different roms/kernels/bootloaders.
