why to extract system.sin?
you can use it to retrieve lost files, like apps.
what do we need to have to extract the system.sin?
- winrar/winzip/7zip/etc...
-the latest flashtool
-yaffey
so lets start
first we need to extract the system.sin from the FTF using winrar/winzip/etc...
{

}
now open flashtool and go to: advanced->sin editor, and choose the system.sin
and then dump the DATA.
note: you need to wait, it might take a while.
now you will get the system.yaffs2
so now you need to open yaffey and open system.yaffs2
now you can do what ever you want with the files,
extract them, replace them...
i might need that
i might need that too

i don't think so. it might work on the cache and the data.
if you want to extract the kernel there are guides for that in the dev section.

you can repack it to a .img file with yaffey or mkyaffs2.
it is not possible to create a .sin file if you are not SONY

I don't think so, if it's ext4, then the output file should be system.ext4 instead of system.yaffs2, it also happens to ST15i ICS system.sin, and ext2explore can't open it too (so, it isn't ext4 for sure).
Maybe, yaffey doesn't support sony ICS yaffs2 disk image?

it doesn't matter if its ics or not, and i tried myself on ics.
if yaffey can't open it than maybe the file is corrupted.
can you get a screenshot of the error or write it?
As you can all see on the first post, the content type field inform you about the type of data embedded into the sin file. As far as it is yaffs2, everything should be fine (I never had any issues with yaffs2 images). In case it is ext4, here begins headache sometimes it works and image can be loop mounted under linux for example. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you can view folder structure but as soon as you try to edit a text file (.prop file for example or one in etc folder), you get a completely corrupted file.
The problem is not with extraction. It is with how sony deals with ext4 filesystems. I didn't figure out yet how to make it work all the time.
If the content type is elf, use the Advanced->Elf Extractor to unpack the content. You can try with kernel.sin for example and I'm sure you will recognize some things once extracted

I know that, system.sin from GB was extracted without any error, I faced the problem only with system.sin from ICS.
both system.sin from GB and ICS (ST15i) after were dumped using flashtool are system.yaffs2 (the content type field also showed yaffs2).

The error I've got is exactly the same as mxsam4's screenshot.
I don't think that it's corrupted since the ftf file was flashed fine into my phone (I extracted system.sin from it).
P.S.
I didn't get any error when opening system.yaffs2 from system.sin from GB ftf.

/EFS partition contains a lot of information about your phone, f.e: wifi/bt mac address and your IMEI (nv_data.bin).
It's highly recommended to backup the whole partition, or at least copy the files from the efs directory.
CORRUPTED OR NOT?
You can check if the efs is mounted or completly damaged with this command:
adb shell
mount
You will see something like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_share": "Share",

}
Red part means /efs is mounted.
IF YOUR PHONE HAVE CORRECT EFS PARTITION:
1, Root your phone - there are several methods to do this.
2, Install root explorer or Estrongs file explorer and copy /efs dir to your sdcard - this will copy the files.
or
2, Make a backup from the whole partition -this is better if you flash a phone with wrong ops, the only way to restore using this backup.
Backup:
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/stl4 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs
Restore:
Add efs.rfs to an unix compatible tar and flash with odin as efs file:
IF YOUR PHONE /EFS IS CORRUPTED:
Flash the included /efs tar with odin:
This will remount your efs partition and (if you have a backup or fixed nv_data.bin) you just need to overwrite files with a file explorer.
confirm WORKING 100% ... all you just need later is the nv_data.bin fixed
Thanks so much for your efforts

I flashed my I5801 from JP9, JPA and JPB till date..

Because you need adb.
If you do on phone (Terminal emualtor) adb shell not needed, just su and the other commands.

how to make .tar file because backup file is .rfs format help me i want my imei back
ok, using the dd method i made the backup of my /efs to a efs.rfs file that have ~4 MB
But when i go to the efs folder (on / ) or see the copy i've made to my SD card, there is no files at all on this folder. How can we "see" those files (nv_data.bin) ?
Hi
For backup I simply copied my /efs folder to SD card using root explorer.
Then I modified nv_data files to get unlocked.
there was no SSNV in the files.
I have a working unlocked phone now but the problem is that IMEI is all zeros like 000000000!
Can I use that folder to restore my files?

Download the Tar Utility from GnuWin32's SourceForge Page.
Code:
hxxp://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuwin32/files/tar/1.13-1/tar-1.13-1-bin.exe/download
(change it to http)
It'll install the tar.exe executable and required dlls in C:\Program Files\GnuWin32\bin
Copy those to where you have your rfs (or you can add the bin folder to your PATH Environment Var, google for help on how to do that)
Now type:
Code:
tar -cf efs.tar efs.rfs
Yes, you can, just copy nv_data to /efs.
Windows users can use IZARC to create tar files.

Ext4.win is the backup file made by TWRP. Ext4 is the filesystem of the file (I assume) and .win is their extension. It may just be as easy as renaming it to .zip and opening it, kind of like a .apk
He probably wants to extract his apps

Re: [Q] Extract *ext4.win files ([A] They are '.tar' archives)
I arrived here from a google search for the same problem so I thought others might, too. Here is what I found:
Code:
# file data.ext4.win
data.ext4.win: POSIX tar archive (GNU)
# mkdir data
# cd data
# tar xf ../data.ext4.win
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
...
While this worked, I was surprised that 7Zip complained that it did not recognize the file type, even when I changed the name to 'data.tar'.
Long story short: TWRP '*.ext4.win' backup files appear to be '*.tar' UNIX "tape archives". I would hesitate to say "standard 'tar' files" only because I encountered some unexplained wrinkle. (7Zip usually doesn't have any trouble.)
I know this thread is a year old, but it's still relevant as there is not much information about this
On windows you can use tartool from here: https://tartool.codeplex.com/
Code:
tartool -x system.ext.win output_folder
better yet, http://sourceforge.net/projects/androidicsjbext/, gui ext4 extractor
Change extension from win to tar and open with winrar.
If on windows open the win file in 7Zip, Extract the .ext4 file, and then open the ext4 file with 7zip

Extracting ext4 images on Windows is not possible unless you use a 3rd party software like DiskInternals Linux Reader etc. Even after extracting ext4 images using this method, some symlinks get broken and hence your rom will fail to boot or will have some bugs. The safest method to extract ext4 images is to extract it in Linux.
@Abhinav2 - Nice work

Seems that KitKat introduced new algorithms... sorry I can't do anything about it...or wait if some other 4.4 member faces same and find a walk around

Do you mean that in KitKat there's a new way of packing in IMG files?
Sent from a device running KitKat

I have dumped the entire Windows Phone 8.1 ROM and uploaded it onto Mediafire if anyone wants to do research with it. It is a 1.31GB iso file and can be opened normally with WinRAR or PowerISO.
Click here to download. [5337 downloads]
Download link is a Mediafire link.

if anyone has SDK 8.1 Preview :
extract cab files here :
packages\EmulatorWP81\packages\WindowsPhone81SDK
using 7-zip
then you get a vhd file . mount it .
I found that a voice assistant added to wp8.1 named Kate I think !
http://s5.picofile.com/file/8113400434/18.jpg
and MainOS\PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Xaps
here is some appx files first one is file manager.

I find this mbr file too but I don't know how to open it .
don't need to extract VHD file again whole vhd is a image file and you can open that via Windows Explorer

yes i tried but surely didn't work
in new wp8.1 sdk there is a dll file i think it name was appxdeployer.dll you can find it after appverify.exe
this file deploy appx files
if you try you can't install appx files on whole sdk 8.1 and it returns an error that you have to developer unlock your device first or something like that .

Tell me did you first try to unregister your phone and then again register it but now with the new register tool?
And is there any chance that we can somehow recompile this appx into xap file keeping it`s permissions?
And just to spice up this thread a lilbit`

i didn't unregister my phone.
as i said appxdeployer dll is not in GDR3 so you can't deploy appx anyhow
for decompile and recompile to xap
you can check winmd codes using .Net reflector 8.0
and for rebuild files in xap format *maybe* yes.
we can use winmd files in wp8 so adding a winmd to vs may work
we know there's a lot of hidden things in wp8.1 sdk
some of them:
action center / background / phone dialler / kate voice assistant / new store and ....
To delete.
