Seriously?! Wth is wrong with my Tab!? - Acer Iconia A500

It's seriously starting to piss me off, first my device doesn't connect to an external HDD. Now when I try to transfer files to my sd card within my tab files don't transfer from my pc to my tablet, it just shows the transfering animation but doesn't even transfer. And whenever I try to create a new folder in my SD card within my tab it gives an error saying device has been disconnected, even though my device is connect and function. Please somebody help me out here! I'm going crazy with this, I have a lot of files and docs I need to transfer.
Thanks!
- Kami.

The PC to Tab transfer issue is likely due to your cable, I've had this too, one more than just my tabs. Try a different one.

Yep for some reason the Tab does not like certain cables....
It sure would be nice to get a working PC-to Tab sync via USB working...

Am I Missing Something? WTF? How Do I Connect to a Computer?

Love the device. Great build, feels nice - just like everyone else says.
Why would anyone release a device that can't connect to a computer to transfer files? Am I missing something? I've tried connecting on Mac and Windows and searched high and low for drivers, tips, tricks, etc. Don't tell me Dropbox or some other back door solution. The whole reason I bought Android (I already have 2 ipads) is to eliminate itunes. Why would I want to have to use a software solution to transfer files - I would just stay with itunes if that were the case. I have an EVO 4G that mounts as a hard drive and when I load files the app recognizes (photo, music, video) and plays it. WTF!!!!!!
Can someone help? NO I AM NOT INTERESTED IN SOME STUPID WORKAROUND spending 30 hours at the risk of bricking and voiding warranty ending up with some laggy piece of crap custom ROM just to do ONE SIMPLE TASK - DRAG AND DROP! No offense, I respect what you hard cores do. I don't have time. I need $500 devices to work as expected.
Oh yeah, stupid POS wouldn't play an AVI file either. No idea why. Don't really care. It took 2 hours to transfer a file via Dropbox. Not doing that again.
Suggestions welcome. My Samsung Tab 10.1 is currently for sale on ebay. Maybe I'll take it down if some kind soul out there can help me figure this out.
Had the same issue. You just need the correct drivers for your PC. Hope that helps.
Try installing this on your mac - Android File Transfer
For some reason, Honeycomb devices don't mount as regular mass storage device, but rather under the Microsoft MTP protocol (verified when my friend with a mac told me I needed to install the Anrdoid File Transfer when I connected his Xoom to my Win7 laptop. I told him he's crazy, but he didn't know since he never connected his Xoom to a PC running Windows).
Hopefully it's fixed for the retail 10.1 tabs.
If you disable "USB debugging," your PC should recognize it as external storage.
I seem to have having the same problem (10.1).
I installed the samsung mobile drivers, and disable usb debugging.
Now when i plug in my tablet it says connected to samsung kies. On windows i get the pop-up for a usb storage connection, but I cant actually view the files and this doesn't show up in my computer.
Do i have to install samsung kies? I only installed the mobile drivers 'Samsung_USB_Driver_P4_Including_Escape'
Any help?
I installed both. My windows 7 identifies it with a mobile phone icon, but under it the sdcard is identified as a tablet(default name). When i connect it to my pc my GT displays "connected / press home key to quit Samsung kie" so I guess kids is requisite.

Thanks for the help. Installed Android File Transfer but still no luck with debugging on or off. It just says "No Android Device Found"
Maybe I have a bad unit or something?
Are there any Mac users out there that have been able to connect? I also have a Vista PC that I will start toying around with.
Use file manager app and do it wirelessly via wifi
It is easy and you dont need a pc ...
I've been having the same problem. It seems that the Android File Transfer program hasn't been updated since the change to 3.1. I'm pretty confident that it'll be fixed shortly. However this is an Android issue not a Samsung issue- . The Xooms and Transformers are having the same problem.

I'm leaning towards that it's a Samsung issue as my friend has both a Xoom and Transformer on 3.1 and Android File Transfer is working fine for them.
I've the 10.1v and I just plugged the usb cable and I saw the device as an external storage. Probably the problem is limited to the I/O devices.
For Divx try downloading "MoboPlayer". I thnink that the default avi player can play only h.264 files
Uhh from when i got my tab i had this problem as well all i did was go into control panel uninstall the drivers installed from the first time of plugging it in .. Then i went onto the tab disabled debugging and connected again let it install its drivers and i was set to go just make sure u have samsung kies installed onto your computer so it can find drivers and once the drivers were installed i went into my computer and it was there named something like pt-901 something lol hopefully this helps..

I still don't know how any OEMs are going to gain traction against Apple among the masses who don't have the patience to figure this stuff out. Luckily I have some time on my hands this weekend!
Dropbox is taking about 30 minutes to transfer a 700MB file from my laptop to my box and then DL to the Tab's memory. Not a great solution. Need to figure out this USB file transfer thing.

What codec was used for your AVI file? Xvid? If so, then that's whack of Samsung to list Xvid and AVI as native support under their specifications.
Do you need to install the Samsung Kies onto every computer you want to transfer files via USB with?
Other Android devices I haven't had to install any third party software for this.
Same here. Every other Android device I've had is drag and drop on both Mac and PC which is the main draw for me. EVO, Archos, etc, etc...
I also thought that Samsung claimed native playback for Xvid AVI files...??? Apparently not.
Finally works!!! While I was messing around with drivers for PC I discovered that Samsung posted and updated (June 9th) version of Kies which allows easy files transfer on Mac. Problem solved.
Now I just need to figure out how to charge over USB so I don't have to lug this brick of an AC adapter around and I'm converted!

Can you throw a link in here?
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/GT-P7510UWYXAR
The above is where I was able to DL both PC drivers and Kies for Mac that WORKS! One thing to note - make sure that you are on the Samsung US site. Originally I was on Samsung.com/ca domain and none of the files would work. When I switched to the US site at Samsung.com (scroll to the bottom to change location) the files worked.

[Q] how do I use phone files on tab?

I asked this once and got an answer that I should "duh" remove the micro sd from the phone and insert it in the tab. If I don't like that i must be stupid or lazy.
I use a lot of spreadsheets in my work. I have been using them on my relatively small 3.7" phone until I got this tablet. Since there is a USB port on the a500, I figured that i could use the cable and use the file on the phone through the USB cable. But the tab doesn't see the sd card when used as a disk drive. The my touch slide 4g has a 32gig card in it.
The tab can see large USB drives except not the phone.
They are both WiFi enabled and have Bluetooth ability. Bluetooth is slow and not so easy as a USB connection. I have not been able to establish a WiFi FTP relationship. I could open the files on either device with a cloud storage, but this is complicated and can be slow and insecure when I am out and about using public WiFi. It can gobble up data if I use my data connection and tethering for both the tab and the phone to keep going back and forth to the cloud for read only and minor changes.
All I want to do is to be able to use my phone as a disk drive as I can do on a computer, or as i can do with an external drive or memory card.
When i have access to a desktop or laptop, I simply plug in the phone and open the file on the phone and then save it right back there when I'm done.
This seems so simple a task. Why is it not right up there with easy things to do? After all, isn't this one of the reasons there is a standard USB port built in when no one else has one?
Sorry to ramble on, but this is one thing I would really like to do.

You CAN use your phones disk drive mode, you just need to mount the drive on your tablet. Use DriveMount from the Market, should do what you need.

No USB?

Hey,
So I ordered the Nexus 4 about a week ago but I just read that there is no USB support. However do you transfer files from your phone to your computer and how do you get new roms onto your phone? I typically download on my computer because its so much faster in terms of internet connection and then I plug my usb in and just drag the roms or files or whatever onto my phone.

Where on earth did you read that???
There is just no USB-OTG (on the go) support, AKA support for USB keyboards/mice/thumbdrives

There is USB support, just not as the host.
Thanks! Some people obviously have their information wrong. Yeah I had read about no on the go support but I read that there was no USB port either, someone was blogging and about and ranting about how annoying it was going to be to have to access files wirelessly on his computer instead of being able to plug it in. It's good to know he had his info wrong! lol

even without using usb you can always transfer the files over the LAN from your PC using ES file explorer or some such. :good:
honestly transferring files over WiFi isnt anymore inconvenient then always having to carry around your micro usb cable, run airdroid on the phone navigate on your pc browser, drag and drop files...

it is less inconvenient than the other 2 options imo.
Or is that what you meant?
i think what you are concerned about is the usb mode in which the phone acts when plugged in via usb. it defaults to mtp mode rather than the old USB Mass Storage.
I had the same question as the OP. Did a little research, and with Windows you just plug your device in; on MacOS you need to install an app on your computer. It's not quite as convenient as having it appear as a connected device in MacOS Finder -- can't preview the images in place, for example -- but it's OK.
(I can't post outside links yet as a new user; google "stackexchange nexus 4 usb storage connect", it's the first result)

Bluetooth File Transfer - WIndows 7 --> Windows 8.1 tablet

SO, just picked up the Dell Venue Pro 8 - thing is really awesome and fast. My only gripe with it is why you cannot just plug the thing into a PC via the micro usb, and file transfer. This is the stupidest thing. I know I can use home network, and how to share files that way. But in my office that is not an option. Rather than ejecting the Micro sd card, plugging it into a USB, copy-paste onto sd, reinsert sd back into tablet, I would like to try to do a Bluetooth file transfer.
I have configured the devices, and they are connected. I have configured the Bluetooth share setting, and Bluetooth Exchange Folder location on my PC. I have added a file to transfer, now I go to my tablet, and literally have no idea where to go. I go to network, no files, Bluetooth settings, I see nothing, file explorer, shared files, etc. I don't see it. I google searched this, and couldn't seem to find the answer either. Can someone please help.
Thanks,

Bluetooth file sharing works much the same as an android phone, ie you actually have to select a file on one device and then select to send it over to the other device. You do not get a shared folder.
As for it being stupid that you cant plug your tablet into another PC. I think its entirely logical. Your tablet isnt really a tablet at all, its a full windows machine in a tablet body. Can you plug your laptop into your PC and transfer files? Perhaps think about what you are saying before calling something stupid. However, it is actually possible, just not via normal means.
Your tablet does support USB host with an adaptor such as this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-USB-Host-Cable-OTG/dp/B006P9G9YG
You could just leave it at that and use a normal USB memory stick to transfer files. Or go further: http://www.maplin.co.uk/usb-data-transfer-cable-221132
I havent tried one of these cables before, but they do allow direct machine>machine file transfer in one way or another.
Here is how to send a file over bluetooth in windows (top reply): http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-windows/57da28a1-f0e5-410d-b774-40f76df5aacb
Also, you *can* use BT to create a network connection (like WiFi but very short range), but I really don't suggest doing that. If for some reason you absolutely can't get your tablet and your workstation onto the same network and yet need to transfer files between them, a flashdrive or similar is the best option.

Issue transferring files to PC

So whenever I attempt to copy files from my phone to PC via USB it will not let me transfer more than one at a time. If I try more it will hang and eventually say the phone isn't connected. Have tried multiple cables including the one that it came with.
And ideas?

That's the limtation for MTP connection. If you want to copy/move files simultaneously then you will have to connect through Mass Storage. If i'm not mistaken, you can change the connection in build.prop, root needed. Didn't find anything, sorry. But you can google it, something might come up.
That.. is stupid! All of my old phones did it perfectly fine... what made them go this route? It is extremely inconvenient.
