Travelling to the US

I'm planning a trip to California in the near future, and because I live in Canada, I'm trying to plan everything out beforehand to cost me as little as possible. The main things that will probably cost me a ton are going to be text messaging and data.
I had read an article online that described how I could buy a prepaid SIM from AT&T and just use that because my phone is already unlocked (with rogers at the moment). Is this a viable solution? If it is, how would I order or buy a prepaid SIM before I leave?

I can only give my experience with 9020T on T-Mobile while I was there for a few days, which I guess won't really help you, but I'll share none-the-less.
If you are there for only a short while and have a T-Mobile compatible phone, it might be worth getting a SIM card (online if you can, cheaper), and purchase pay-by-the-day pre-paid plan. For $3 a day, you get unlimited talk/texts/data, which I thought was extremely useful during the days I spent there.

T-mobile is better and cheaper than AT&T. You will have an American phone number as long as you use and American SIM card.

I live in Winnipeg and I go down to the Minneapolis-area twice a year. I purchased a T-mobile SIM card, and for $2 a day went on the EDGE-speed unlimited calling/data plan. It literally is $2/day, and if you don't use it at all it doesn't charge you. It cost me $12 for the SIM, and that gave me $4 credit... although I think it might be more now (maybe $20). Data speeds were slow, but not unbearable (Google Maps worked really well, for example). Texting and calls throughout the US are included, unlimited, as is voicemail and call display.
Don't forget to sign up with Google Voice with your US number while you are down there, too!

I'll definitely take that advice. Did you order the SIM to be sent to you or did you pick it up while you were there? I'll look into changing my current google voice number (I'm not sure if it can be done), but I have a ton of internet calling/texting apps on my tablet as it is. Did you use your nexus s?

I would highly suggest picking one up when you go down - just pop into a T-Mobile store. They will give you a local number, etc.
The $2/day is EDGE speeds, but unlimited. $3 will give you 3G.

I think i'll sign up for the $3 plan. You don't get charged if you aren't using the SIM, right? That way I can just leave it laying around until the next time I go to the states

Is there any expiration date for the SIM cards, T-mobile and AT&T? For I usually travel to US only about twice a year, if the SIM card expires in 3 or 6 months, then, it is not worthwhile to keep it. Thanks.

You lose the number/time after 6 months... but you can add money online. I've gotten into the habit (just once so far) of adding $10 every 6 months to keep it active.

How much does it cost to reactivate if you lose your number? I'm thinking that I'll pick up a SIM when I go down there so I have some kind of phone capabilities and just pull it out of my phone when I get back to Canada. I'm guessing that I would only have to pay for the use I get out of it in the states and that I can pop it back in if I go back before I lose the number? Also, would any settings have to be changed on my phone or is it as simple as switching SIMs?

Just pop into a retail store? Anyone done this? Did tmo charge you? I have a bigger one in my HD2 currently.

Either go to a retail store and ask for one ( they may give you one for free ), or order one online. It's 99c

Yep. I purchased an iPhone 5 off contract (don't worry I hated it and returned it within 5 days) and went into a T-Mobile store and they gave me a micro SIM on the spot, free of charge.

T-Mobile website is currently 'out of stock' for the micro sim activation kit (i want the prepaid 100 voice, unlimited text, 'unlimited' data plan). According to the online chat person I talked to, the kit should be back in stock in 24 to 48 hours.

I just did a chat session on their website. Asked for a Micro-SIM to use with the Nexus 4 and the rep in the chat gave me a link to order, and verified the order number went through. I did this at 4PM. Literally at 9AM in the morning our mailroom guy handed me a package with the SIM inside.
All for $1 and change...lol

Definitely just go to the store and get one. I called 3 stores in the atlanta area (near my house, near my work, on the drive there) and they all said they have a crap ton of them in stock and will give you one/activate it in store for free, or (if you prefer) will cut your normal sim with a hole punch type of thing for free as well.

I just got one for free in my local T-Mo store. Google doesn't anticipate even shipping mine until today, so I asked them not to activate it. You can activate it from 611 or from their website once you get the phone - obviously that will kill your existing phone so hold off before doing this.

I'm a prepaid suscriber too, and was wondering the same thing. I talked over their online chat system to a rep and he said the online order won't be able to retain my number?!
Anyone else here on prepaid but managed to get it for free at a Tmob store?

Nexus 4 T-Mobile activation...

I ordered a microSIM activation kit from T-Mobile a week ago, and called today to inquire where it was. Due to some system issues, they couldn't tell me anything besides either a) wait until it shows/doesn't show up, or b) go into a T-Mobile store and have them sell me a SIM and activate it. Well I want to do the $30 plan, which is online only from what I gather, so having them activate it isn't an option.
I ended up just buying a SIM from them, but ran into a snag in that there is no activation code with the SIM. It's almost like this is a replacement SIM or something...hell, I don't know. Since I haven't taken the SIM out of the card, can I take it back? Is there a different kind of SIM that I should be looking for (e.g. prepaid instead of replacement??). Hell, I'd use a burner, but from what I've read, it isn't possible to port a number to a burners SIM??
All I know is that I'm tired of waiting on a package from USPS, that could be in Angola for all I know, and I have a Sprint account I am itching to cancel (and a nice new Nexus 4 I'd like to use instead of this EVO LTE).
Any insight would be fantastic. Thanks in advance!

why don't you just ask TMo yourself? none of us are TMo employees.

The Sim comes on a card right? There is s number on the card which identifies to the CSR what sim to activate.... You need to call T-Mobile customer care

Thanks for the non-snarky response! My local store is closed, and their customer service line transferred me 4 times before cutting off. I figured that, in the great hive mind, SOMEONE had to be in the same position, and might know the answer.
The SIM did come on a card, and there is a SIM number, and a PUK number, whatever that is. I suppose I can try to brave the gauntlet that is customer service again...

Customer service cannot activate the $30 100 min 5gb plan, it is for new web activations only
CS cannot activate this deal for you and the store cannot either.
Go back to the store and get the activation code you need.
Be patient and don't waste your money.

Typically the activation code is printed on the paper pamphlet that comes with the phone. I have no idea if the codes are tied to the sim- I suspect they aren't since I received a card and a separate sealed pamphlet.
since I actually was a big jerk and ordered some when t-mobile was free, I have two extra activation codes - incoming PM.

I did the same.
Ordered from the website. Got it yesterday. The activation code was on the booklet. Activated first on Pay As You go. (by mistake, don't know why). Had to wait for a day before I could change the plan. Next day activated the 30$ plan online. Voila!
P.S. the 30$ plan is also available in walmart. You can buy it online and walmart sends you the code through which you can activate it online. My bro does that

Good info, just in case my fat fingers borked it. Thanks! Through this whole process, I just wasn't sure if there was something "special" about the kit they send out, and really don't like relying on USPS...

[Q] Setting Up $30 T-Mobile Plan?

Hello everyone! I had just purchased the Nexus 4 from Google and am waiting for it to ship. I know that's it's possible to start a monthly plan with T-Mobile using their $30 Unlimited Data/Text w/ 100 minutes, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it (or even if there's a better option to go with - I'm looking for the cheapest unlimited data/text plan for this phone). Connection speeds aren't my biggest concern, I'm upgrading from a Virgin Mobile phone.
So from what I know with T-Mobile is that I have to buy the SIM card/Starter kit from their website then buy a $30 card from Walmart or Target. Is there anything else? Or a better option to go with? Please let me know, I'd love to get this phone set up as soon as I get it. Thanks a lot, guys!

Go to either the tmobile site or the tmobile store and ask for a sim with activation kit. Then log onto the tmobile site, go to the 4g prepaid section and select/signup for the $30 prepaid plan. Make sure it says unlimited 4g rather than the 1000 minute version since the 4g one with 100 minutes is the one you want. Once you have your account setup, you add $30 from a debit/credit card or a prepaid card from a store like target or walmart.
I'd recommend getting the sim card and activation kit from the tmobile site because it is free with standard shipping. At the store I believe I had to pay $10. But it depends on how quickly you want the card. I wanted it the same day rather than waiting for 2-3 day shipping.
Also during the account setup/sim activation process, there is an option to port an existing number if you want to do that.

[Tutorial] How to get $30 prepaid plan with T-Mobile new activation

Note: - This guide only works for new T-Mobile prepaid activation and with T-Mobile HTC One device.
Introduction: T-Mobile has the hidden $30 prepaid plan that has 100 talk minutes, unlimited text and 5GB data with 4G speed. This is the cheapest plan for prepaid IMHO. I have tested the data speed in Rochester, MN (not a refarmed 1900Mhz area), and the results are 16Mps download and 5Mps upload. You can transfer your number from other carrier (Straight Talk etc.) with this new activation. There is no activation fee. I haven't experienced any drop call or technical issue. The coverage is really good in Minnesota.
What you need to get started:
1. Activation kit (aka sim card). You can buy the activation kit from T-Mobile or Bestbuy store for 15 bucks, then print out this template (Link: http://bit.ly/TMaxwM) and cut it to micro sim. Keep the simcard card or write down the simcard number.
2. Buy a T-Mobile refill card from Walmart/Bestbuy (Link: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357) for first month. Keep the PIN number
3. A T-Mobile HTC One. You don't need to unlock the SIM. I paid full price for my device. It came flawlessly without any imperfections
Step-by-step process:
- Put the micro simcard that you cut (1) into the phone.
- In the activation kit, there is a activation card that has the activation code (11 digits number). You need this number.
- Go to www.t-mobile.com/prepaidactivation and follow the instruction (you simply put the simcard number and activation code)
(Note: if you don't have the device yet, you can type 9999999999)
- If you need to port your number from other carrier, don't forget to click on the option on the right. It took me 7-8 hours to get my number ported from ST to T-Mobile.
(Note: For Straight Talk Bring Your Own Device users, the account number is the simcard number from ST)
- After you submit, you now can choose your plan. Pick the $30 plan for 100 minutes + Unlimited text/data (5G with 4G speed).
- The last step is to fund your account for the first month. Take the PIN number from the refill card (2) and type it in.
Then, you are done. T-Mobile will send a confirmation email after you finish the process. If you choose a new number, you can use it instantly. If you want to port your number, it will take no more than 24 hours to get the number ported.
If you have any problem or concern with the porting process, call this number 877-789-3106. This is the T-Mobile department in charge for porting number. They can assist you and tell you when your number is ready to use. :good:

P/S: My device came with locked bootloader. I followed this instruction (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618) to unlock bootloader/ flash new recovery and new ROM. Great post! I got the $30 prepaid plan with the 64gb Developer Edition and I am loving it.
Speeds are excellent eventhough I am not in an LTE city. Way faster than the crappy speeds I was getting under Sprint.
So happy I just ditched them to get away from Contracts forever!!
Got a $100 bill for the ETF which will be canceled out by the $100 Visa Giftcard from the HTC "buyback program" my old GS2.
Perfect!!

You can also buy the refill card from Amazon for cheap :laugh:

I am unsure about the 3rd party sellers whom are selling the refill card on Amazon. Some of them don't have any feedbacks, but couple of them have more than 100 feedbacks from last year. You buy at your own risk though

I was planning on getting the Dev edition, but I'm not in a refarmed area so I need the 1700 mhz band ability. Where's the best/cheapest place to buy the T-Mobile version without a contract?
Also, did you unlock the bootloader/ flash new recovery and new ROM before or after activating it?
Lastly, how did you get the wifi calling to work? That would help a lot since I would only have 100minutes. Is it an app or...?

- I bought it directly from T-Mobile via telesale. Price is $580 + tax + shipping (if you choose overnight).
- I unlocked and flashed new ROM right after I activated the prepaid account.
- Wifi calling works immediately after your account is activated.
- I have used GrooveIP to make phone call on wifi or 4G network. It uses Google Voice number

Guys, I would suggest you port your number to Google Voice. Then you can port it back to Tmobile after you start the new $30 a month prepaid account. Or you could keep the number with Google Voice if you like.
Either way, it's a way to keep your number.

I just purchased the HTC One over the phone. They had to put me on the $50 postpaid plan to start, in order for me to purchase the phone, but said I could switch to prepaid when I receive the phone. I'll call them once the phone arrives. Do you think I'll be able to switch to prepaid with the SIM card that comes with the phone, or will I need to purchase the prepaid SIM card from T-Mobile's website?

Did you pay full price for the phone? If yes, once you receive the device, don't use the SIM that comes with it. Call Customer Service to close your account and follow my instruction.

Yes I did pay full price. So I should just immediately call and cancel the postpaid plan before I use that SIM and they won't charge me the $50? And I should buy the Prepaid SIM kit and just go to the online prepaid activation site?

I did this a month ago with my HTC One. Bought the phone from T-Mobile store, paid it in full, signed up for the cheapest post-paid plan, the $50 one. I also paid for that at the same time as the phone. I was running off of that plan for about 6 hours and then I called T-Mobile to get switched to the $30 5gb plan. After about 10 minutes of talking to the low-level customer service rep, they were saying I couldn't switch to the plan because it is technically Walmart's plan and not T-Mobile's. I knew it was completely not true, so I spoke to that person's supervisor and he immediately switched me over to the $30 plan, with maybe a couple of minutes of switching time after the phone call. After that, all was good, my original $50 payment was still valid and it was used by the $30 plan, so I had a $20 remaining balance in my account that I use in case I go over my minutes. After you go over your 100 minutes, it's 10cents a minute after that so long as you have money in your T-Mobile account. My first month of the service is about to be over in 4 days and I only spent $6 (60 minutes) of my $20 balance on my account.
So for entire bill for the first month will be under $40 assuming I don't talk on the phone for more than 40 minutes between now and Friday 5/24.
* I also went out of town to bumblef*ck North Carolina and I was getting zero service in the mountains, like everyone else, but slightly worse service where AT&T users were getting data and I wasn't. But that all changed when I had WiFi calling in the cabin, and nobody else had that option. So I was still gettings calls and texts, whereas everyone else had to wait until they were on the drive home and got service again.

Thanks for the reply! Glad to hear it's working well for you. So you seemed to be able to switch from postpaid to prepaid over the phone even with the regular SIM card. I already bought the prepaid SIM kit so I'll probably just go straight through activating with that SIM and not even use the SIM that comes with the phone. I should probably also call to cancel the postpaid account just in case. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and I'll have the $30 plan on the HTC One and be able to transfer my phone number.
That's great to hear about the Wifi calling feature too. So it allows for calls and texts? That's great to hear if I'm in an area with no coverage. When I'm at home, should I also use wifi calling? Better voice quality?
