S3 US or S3 international? - Galaxy S III General

Hi guys, first I wanna say data speed isn't a problem for me. I want to buy the international version but the thing is I hate ordering online if there's a problem with the phone it's gonna be hard for me to exchange it. But by buying S3 US version I could just walk in tmobile store and exchange if there's a problems with the phone.
What's your suggestions on this matters? Should I just buy US version of S3? I really want to try out Samsung quadcore :'(
Thanks

I think you could buy a secondhand warranty like square trade and others. But I have not tries them personally. I always too cheap and just took my chances, living life on the edge you know. Haha. But seriously you may want to check those out, just an idea.

99% there won't be any problem unless you are really unlucky. I have been buying new unlocked smartphones from the last 2 years and never had problems except for once which had a dead pixel. I got that exchanged from online seller without issues. Granted I don't keep phones for long but you should be fine.
Have you had problems with your phones before regularly and had to exchange? If yes then may be you find faults easily and better to go with US version, if not international should be fine .... So make a call based on your past experiences.

[Q] To keep or not to keep?

First and foremost I love my atrix for the most part..but the question is do I trust AT&T to make good on the HSUPA or do I return the phone this weekend before Im stuck in two years of possible down/upload hell in my area I typically get 500-1kdown and 90-200kup my thirty days expire this weekend so I guess its time to make a decision. Your opinions and thoughts are definitely welcome
Well I mean it is your phone and your experience, we can't really tell you if you should get it or not.
If you're happy with it, that's what matters; if you buy any ATT branded phone then you're going tto run into this (4G phones obviously)
I didnt mind for the upload and download speeds, I just didn't like the phone itself.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
I was more or less interested in others thoughts on rather or not they believe AT&T will eventually do right by their non-iphone users..because to be honest AT&T is already one of if not the most restrictive carrier now in addition to that they offering sub-par service
Its hard for me too. Im thinking of calling up ATT and seeing what they will do for compensation till they fix this issue. Not only is my upload bad but my download seems to get capped. If I run one speed test its good. The next right after are slow, around 300kbs down. Its horrible. Im kind of mad at them right now and I hope they fix this crap.
Inspire is a good choice. I sold my atrix on eBay already. A locked cellphone is a dead one.

The phone does not get 4G speeds. It's false advertising if you ask me. I would return it until they fix this.

Sometimes returning a phone is not as easy as you think. Restocking fee or shipping and handling fees really hinders people. I'm still deciding whether I should keep the Atrix or not.
Keep or not Keep, that's the question.

Decision on buying Unlocked or AT&T Brand

If I buy an unlocked version for AT&T where is the best place to buy one? I would want one with a warranty first and foremost. Also, is the home button one that goes out easily? Will the phone run as fast as the one that will come out on AT&T officially? I wouldn't want to spend a ton of money on an unlocked one to find out it's slower than the one that AT&T puts out for hundreds of dollars cheaper.
Next is what about warranty. How safe am I buying unlocked? I have read a lot on this board about yellow stains and stuck pixels. How common are these to get? I don't want to buy a phone that's so much money to be stuck with these problems.
Thanks all
AJ

Expansys-USA provides warranty support for phones they sell meaning they'll ship it back to the UK if it needs service. If you buy it from an authorized dealer in the U.K. it's covered by Samsung's two-year global warranty. Regardless, count on being without your phone for a couple of weeks if it needs repair. If you're looking for the safety and security of a direct replacement overnighted from your carrier and loss/theft coverage importing a phone probably isn't for you.

It seems sturdy and I don't think there were problems with the SGS1 which utilized a home button also.

Unless the AT&T version has an upgraded processor then it wouldn't be any faster. T-Mobile is getting a version with the same Qualcomm chip as the Sensation which hasn't benchmarked well. The leaked pics of Sprint's version appears to be a real SGS2. Nothing specific's been posted about AT&T's version so it could be a 4.3" display with an Exynos chip or a 4.5" display with a Qualcomm chip. They just announced there first LTE phone won't be out until the end of the year and code for AT&T's LTE network was found in one of the latest ROMs. This means their SGS2 might not come out for a while or they'll be releasing it sooner as an HSPA+ phone vs. an LTE phone.

There have been some QC issues with the screen and some variances in color temperature from device to device. If you but if from Expansys exchanging it would be fairly simple. If you buy it in the UK it'll cost you shipping. Stay away from Handtec, they were hassling people on display related exchanges.
You have been very helpful my friend. What would you do? Would you wait for AT&T? Or would you buy unlocked? I have also heard a rumor that AT&T is going to go with the 4.5 inch screen size is that true?

I would get international version for faster updates or bug fixes. You get to have SGS2 before many people.
Also, is HSPA+ phone as fast as the LTE phone? Will I even notice that big of a difference?
So newegg is a no go. I checked out Expansys-US and it looks legit.

LTE only matters if you plan on keeping the phone for a long time. AT&T's only going to have 15 markets up this year. If you get an international phone you can get fake-4G for $10 a month. LTE, while faster, is $30 for 2GB of data and $10 per GB beyond that. And you can't tether at that price. I stream video and tether a tablet and have had no speed issues and I'm in a 3G market.
You sound really paranoid about getting an international phone. You need to think hard about the downside.
- Warranty work will easily take weeks.
- You can buy accident insurance from SquareTrade for $94 for two years but you can't get theft/loss protection.
- If there are QC defects out of the box it'll be a pain to exchange the phone.
The upside is you can get cheap unlimited data (via AT&T), upgrades directly from Samsung, and there's no carrier molestation with crap added or functions stripped out.
Personally, if AT&T gets the same phone T-Mobile is (4.5" display/Qualcomm chip), I'd skip it. Without the Exynos chip the 4.5" phone is an SGS2 for marketing purposes only.
Not paranoid just getting all of the facts. Is the att version going to be 4.5?

So do any models actually have a real US warranty? (I.e. Not the Expansys deal).
I didn't think Samsung offers any US warranty coverage since the GSII hasn't been produced for the US.
I saw the "International Warranty" model on Amazon but no one can prove it's actually warranted...they just assume it's covered in the US.

If you send a phone to Samsung for repair they'll ask for a copy of the invoice and possibly a credit card statement if they're suspicious about the authenticity of the invoice. Any phone purchased outside it's intended market of sale is considered grey market and therefore has no warranty. Same thing for purchasing it from a retailer not authorized by Samsung. Since no model of the SGS2 is intended for sale in the U.S. buying it from anyone in the U.S. means it has no warranty - no matter what the seller might tell you. Supposedly, because the warranty is considered global, a properly purchased UK phone should be repaired by Samsung in the U.S. No one's tested that though. Expansys, because they have offices in the UK, ships the phone back through their UK office for warranty repairs.
If I were to buy Expansys-US would be the place because they do cover it. Now only problem is what if I buy it and AT&T come out with theirs in two weeks LOL! Also, what's the fail rate on the screens, etc?

AT&T WILL probably have the Galaxy S II in a few weeks... if you can you are probably better off waiting to see which model you prefer. I heard US varients of the GS II were getting Tegra processors and of course AT&T will cripple the phone with bloatware and slow updates.. so I went ahead and got an unlocked one from Amazon that DOES have a warrenty. Who knows, maybe AT&T will surprise everyone and keep the Galaxy S II the way it should be.

A Farewell to my Beloved Note

I was one of the many unlucky people to brick their Note in the whole ics kernel fiasco. I tried to send my phone to Samsung Germany for repair but it would have cost $112 to ship it there . However Amazon said they would give me a full refund despite it being out of the 30 day period. I'm too afraid to invest in another international Note though. So now I need to decide which AT&T phone I should get. Any ideas? I don't want to wait much later than June to get a new phone by the way.

I wish I contacted Amazon before ordering the replacement Note (yeah, my first Note was bricked by the LP6 kernel ).
If you are really sticking with AT&T only devices, I think the I717 would fit you best. It's a direct replacement of what you had (minus the home-button). I had the I717 for two hours, then I decided to sell it for the N7000 instead because of the developments available. The One X is also a good choice, but the AT&T version lost its "quad-core edge" compared to the international version.

The AT&T version's S4 isn't that bad but only 16G rom with no micro-sd slot is a deal breaker for me. I dislike the AT&T's Note as well because of the slow qualcomm CPU. I would rather get another N7000 or wait for GSIII for the moment.

I would wait for the S3 or buy a used Note. That last "new" phones were bought were Captivates. After that 2 SGS IIs and my Note Used. Saving our upgrades for iPhone 5s to sell unless ATT decided to dump our UL MediaNet plans to upgrade. Then we won't upgrade at all. Don't need LTE. WiFi is everywhere.
I'm confused why blame the note for upgrading unoffically to the wrong firmware version for you phone? It's country specific? So at the end of the day you don't like the Note?
I personally can't see a replacement for the note till the next version comes out.
Get another Note is my choice.

Right, but the OP explicitly stated that he/she wants to stick with AT&T's devices. The N7000's super-brick wave is strong as of late, and there is no way to get it warrantied through Samsung in the US (I'm in the US, too, and my first Note was bricked by LP6) besides sending it back to where it was originally sold for service.
The advantage to having an AT&T device is that should it be super-ultra-hard-bricked or any other faults, it can be brought back to the DSC (Device Support Center) for an exchange within the 1-year warranty period.
International Note + CM9. Better than anything out there.

Sorry to post my question into your thread but I could not ignore your experience with the GN International bought from Amazon.de
I am just about to go the same route as you did, and because I also had one problem with a product bought from Amazon and the way they've handled it so brilliantly that I was thrilled with their after sale service.
I was asked to send it back and because I was given a bar code which I glued on the box I didn't have to pay the shipping cost (just needed a printer and some glue). And because I've asked for the money back instead of Amazon credit I had the money in 4 days maximum instead of instantly, which in my book is amazing.
Now I am considering of buying a G.NOTE from German Amazon or Spanish Amazon. The price difference is 2 Euros so it's not a deal breaker so my question is:
Do German G. NOTEs have a problem and would it be preferable for me to get one from Spain or is it all the same thing and I should not worry much about it?
Thank you all for your answeres.
Don't you worry about German or Spanish versions. They are the same as long as you buy unbranded exemplars. The sole difference is the rom version. Just make sure you buy a N7000.

Wait ....I thought the N7000 was the AT&T US version??? I had understood that the major difference between the US and Intl versions was the physical button.
I just ordered the AT&T version. I also cannot consider a "Flagship" device one without SDCard capability.....might as well get an iPhone. I don't get why the decision with that, being that the EVO 4G LTE has the SDCard ...it's the same phone rebranded....That just ticks me off. Same reason I could not buy the GNex.
I'm just hoping that the SGIII comes out with in my 30 day return period in case I don't like the Gnote.

The SGH-I777 was the last Samsung device on AT&T to only have minor differences from the international version. (touchkeys, NFC, slight audio differences for calls)
The AT&T Note has the following in common with the international version:
Physical dimensions, Wacom digitizer, screen type, name - that's it. EVERYTHING else about the device is completely different.

uk s3 (mystery recall for a lte chip and board....

evening all,
so a little bit about my query/truth
so i am a phone shop manager and i own the s3 (ovb)
now i was speaking to a member of staff from cpw and he informed that Samsung are now offering to take in your s3 and replace the board with the new 4g(lte chip and other part maybe the ram.... now im not sure if there is any truth on this or a cost involved but i also spoke to our Samsung rep yesterday and he also said yes some staff have sent there s3 as a mystery recall to be upgraded......
any views or opinions on this or any other news you have heard the same,
cheers.

They don't have to but if they can if they want, now let's put it this way, if they are going to do this, will you buy another Samsung flagship phone again? I know I would.
Sent them an email, but I'm not sure if their customer support will work weekends to get a reply before Monday.
Very hard to actually determine the truth behind the OP or the samsung rep that's saying that - but if that's the case....well samsung will get a lot of good +1's from people.
That said - I bet there will be also people who will flame samsung for recalling it...
I think this is bull**** and will never happen. and if it indeed did, it was for a small customer lot.
and as for the firmware upgrade to enable LTE. bull**** again will never happen the hardware is physically impossible to do as its not there to begin with.

Why? A quick mainboard replacement should sort it, the chassis is the same as far as I know so seems feasible, but can't see it being totally free tbh
They way i see it is samsung and apple are having a bit of a battle and one way the iphone beats the i9300 is with 4g. So if samsung gave a free upgrade to the mass amount of i9300 owners not only would it be a good image for the company but would be a 1 up against apple.
I think it would be a very wise decision for samsung to do this

I would do it
we all know that the screen and digitizer and gorrila glass 2 are all combined into one, and costs about $200+ to get a replacment for it.
i cant see why samsung could not sell the motherboard only and people could fit it them selfs
thats if this doesnt amount to anything replacing the board yourself could be feesable and its very easy to replace the mainboard only, unless the camera or something else requires a different version that is to the board your using or not compatible ect.
i would actually consider buying the main board only if it was compatible.
EDIT: actually thinking about it i cant see this happening either as wouldnt replacing the motherboard screw up your IMEI number ? and make it different ect ?

I would upgrade at that price I reckon
these multi dollar companies are all the same.
Their will never do it for free unless it was a ( possible) legal requirement. It's possible there could be another recently recognised glitch on the mainboard and under the disguise of an lte upgrade their replacing them.
There was already one previous recall of some batches according to vodafone before they were distributed to customers.

Why not phone EE as suggested in your link?
This is not a source lol . Someone only asked the question if it will be possible which I highly doubt unless money is involved.

They're saying £75 but can someone else confirm?
If you've called EE Uk and they've said "YES!, Your old S3 + £75" what's more to confirm?
It sounds like a pretty good deal!
If that's to be believed, I'm tempted. Only went onto T-mobile at end of August... albeit via Tesco phone shop. Did score the handset for free through that, after buying myself out of my Orange contract.

Im on the phones 4 u jump tariff, and can upgrade my phone every 6 months, but it bumps my monthly spend up lol

I would say there would be an upgrade option but it wont be free, No way. But hey the more people that get it there better it is for me and development,, come on people take out your wallets.. Definatley best phone in the world I recon ~
Just tried ringing EE but they're closed.
If this offer is real would i have to call EE direct or could i speak to Orange customer service?
I got offered either phone and I went for the 3g one. Oops!

When i rang Orange last night they didn't seem to know of any offer currently, but they said that EE is aiming to be fully launched by the end of October so if there are any special offers then they are more likely to come after then, as they said they have only just started alerting customers to changes in there service.
Not sure if this is true or not or if calling EE directly would give me a different answer.
why is this thread even called "trade in program" when there isnt one and will never be one. You will be able to buy it on contract like any other phone, they wont need incentives as it will be the first 4g phone.

Because the OP was asking if anyone has any information about a trade in program involving the two phones, they may well not be one but that's what the OP was trying to find out.
And i think incentives will be needed to get people who purchased the i9300 to then spend more money on the i9305.

The truth is, I love my I9300, but if there would be a way to update, even paying, I will do this step. If not, I will wait one year, check the S4 and then I will decide: upgrading or wait another year with the S3...

Yup, nothing to complain about in I9300. Don't forget, we still get a nice score in benchmarks, the 9305 2 gigs are kinda useless
