Clever uses for tectiles - Galaxy S III General

For anyone who doesn't know what these are refer to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Pbhgl-_LmA
According to Endgadget packs of these will be about $15 for a pack of 5: http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/13/tectiles-programmable-nfc-stickers-for-select-members-of-samsun/
So I'm wondering if people can come up with clever uses for these things. So far I've only got a couple of ideas
#1 A sticker on my laptop so I can just hold my phone up to it to auto initiate bluetooth.
#2 Same for a PS3 controller. A sticker on it that enables bluetooth connection with it, and takes me right to my games folder.
...beyond that I can't really think of anything.
Any ideas?

Thread going in themes and apps section with a bunch of good info. NFC thread.

Keeping the screen awake while plugged in.

I have searched the forum for an answer and can not find it anywhere so please bare with me if it has been answered previously, it's not easily found.
I have a rooted MyTouch running Cyanogen 4.0.4. I could have sworn in his previous releases, there was an option in the Dev Tools to keep the screen awake while it was plugged in to either USB or charging. Was I imagining this? If not, can someone please tell me where to do this because for the life of me, I can not find it again!
Thanks in advance!
Download Locale from the Android market. It's free and you'll be blown away by the features and ease of use. And it does exactly what you're asking. I don't know if this feature was in previous versions of Cyan's mods but I don't know who wouldn't love Locale!
*Personal tip for ya too, if you d/l locale and use it's other features, use the wifi positioning, not the GPS. The GPS positioning kills my phones battery because it checks your position every 10 minutes with GPS. Wifi is alot less power heavy on the battery. Go get the app and use it, then read my tip again...it'll make alot more sense!*
~*Apollo*~
*Locale, so you know, is location based profiles for sound, brightness, connections like wifi/bluetooth, vibrate, and ringer profiles, and also has power profiles for charging, or when the battery is below 20%, etc.*
yes there is an option. i am using it. it isnt in dev tools. it is in development option in your settings. the same place where you go to turn on usb debugging.
Sorry Slightly off topic but I was wondering if anyone knows of an app to turn the Screen off during a phone call?? I thought The app was "Spare parts" but it wasn't
Any ideas?
Thanks NguyenHuu! I knew I had seen it before and it was driving me nuts not being able to find it! Thanks again!!

1 - battery drain in standby shouldn't be significant but you can reduce it by turning off radios you don't need and/or reducing the update interval of any apps you have checking in the background.
2 - I'm not sure what's happening here, usually the wifi logo overwrites the 3g one so it is obvious which one is in use (at least it does on my UK SGT, might be different for CDMA). Either way switching on and off the various radios is easily done from the notification area, just swipe down from the top of the screen to show toggles for wifi, bt, gps, silent mode & orientation lock.
Edit: oops, I miss remembered, I don't know of an easy way to switch the mobile radio.
3 - I had a bit of a play with allshare day one but haven't had time to give it a proper workout yet.
4 - I haven't had mine run down that far but it sounds like a sensible power saving measure, better to see it dim for a while than bright for two minutes!
5 - the screen auto adjust in the display settings seems to help a lot. Other than that I've found the battery life to be very good for the most part. I tend to only switch on wifi if I have a big download to do so that might help in my case.
Welcome by the way, hope you enjoy the tab!

THANKS Bill! Appreciate the info/advice!
I guess I am getting confused between the 3g/ the strength bars. So if it doesnt say 3g but just shows signal strength then its probably using wifi?
Does anyone know if the SGT defaults to wifi first then to 3g? Just curious.

When wifi is on it turns 3g off. I use an app called tasker to save my battery. I have it set to turn wifi/3g off when the screen turns off, and if I place it face down it sets the device into airplane mode, left in this state the battery drains very slow when not in use. Tasker is not the cheapest app but you are only limited by your imagination what you can do with it.

Anyone else know how to use allshare? According to samsung you cannot stream from your pc to the tablet is this correct?
i am actually trying to do both stream from the pc to the tab and then seperately stream from the tab to the tv or blu ray player and or pc and nothing works any which way? not sure how to get this to work?
thanks
AllShare is an app that you can use to connect to other Samsung AllShare enabled divices like TV's. I removed the app. It is completely useless. (It would be so nice if there was an app by which I could connect to my homenetwork.)

Not quite correct! It allows you to stream from/to other DLNA devices which includes some Samsung TV's, but plenty of other devices too.
For example, I use to it to stream from/to my PCs with Media Center.

Question about NFC tags

Had a question about NFC tags... I'm seeing a bunch of coverage on them lately and it looks like it indeed could be useful.
It seems you would almost need 2 tags per "action" though.
I'd love to have one at work, but wouldn't I need one for "arrive at work" and "leave work" to turn on/off certain things?
I did see (at least some) apps that make use of TOGGLE - however, what if for example I had a Car NFC which I want to turn on bluetooth when I get in, and turn it off when I get out - what if I happened to enable bluetooth earlier - maybe listening to a bluetooth speaker? This would create an inconsistency and kind of break the toggle (assuming I was toggling multiple things, at least...)
Still trying to read through and thoroughly understand it - any insight from people who actually use these on a daily basis?
Seems like these NFC taskers need to create a new service to always listen to NFC - is that true? Are they battery killers?
Lastly - any recommendations on where to pick some NFC tags up?
I'm no NFC expert but I do use it with the Tagstand NFC Task Launcher.
1. You don't need 2 tag with NFC Launcher for, like you said, it can toggle. Toggle works by performing Action 1 the first time its scanned and then Action 2 the second time its scanned.
2. Say, for example, Action 1 says to turn on Bluetooth and Action 2 says to turn it off. You scan it and it performs Action 1 but its already on, it will do nothing (wont create some universe shattering paradox ). Then if you have take the phone off the tag and scan it again it will turn Bluetooth off (Action 2) and then loop back to action 1 and so on.
3. On our phone, if not all of them (idk), the NFC chip is only on when the screen is on. A mod found here enables it to be on always but this eats battery life.
4. I currently use Tagstand's own NFC stickers from their store and they are pretty cheap and work great. buynfctags.com has then cheaper but the blank ones have a minimum order of 5 and the custom printed ones have a minimum order of 250.
VERY IMPORTANT!- The Nexus 4 wont work with Mifare Classic 1K Stickers, these include Samsung tech-tiles, because they use proprietary standards (see here for more). All truly NFC compliant tags will work, eg. The Type 2 (NTAG203) and Type 1 (Topaz 512) stickers.
NFC stuff is great, don't get me wrong. But there are alternatives so I just wanted to offer some suggestions just in case you weren't aware. I'm writing this based on your "work" scenario.
I do a LOT of the stuff that you can do with NFC Task Launcher etc. with automation apps. You can in fact, do all the basics you can do with NFC with automation apps, the bonus of NFC is being able to pin point areas and to design complex macros. I've used Tasker in the past but right now I use llama primarily.
For me, NFC is more of a boon in "trusted" areas, like in my home, my car or say at work vs. out and about. I'll admit I'm slightly paranoid about nfc scanners/readers siphoning information right out of my phone. It's very highly unlikely but tech has gotten all the better and thieves are getting super creative - we're also making it so very easy for them. The culprit would have to be close to me and in case of our devices, the screen would need to be on, but that wouldn't be difficult in a cinema or in a crowded area. My habit right now is to disable it unless I'm home or have a reason to use it while out. Eventually I'll source a nice case for my phone and tablet that blocks it, then I can leave it enabled.
So, yeah...keep the alternatives in mind if you're just interested in basics. I set my wife's llama to set her phone to the silent profile when at work. She's not allowed to use her phone there but I hate her turning it off because sometimes she doesn't remember to turn it on when leaving but rather when driving on the way home. So her llama sets the phone to full silence when in her office and as soon as she leaves the garage it sets it to normal.
As I mentioned, with NFC it's more about the ability to pin point within certain areas and design more complex conditions. For example, llama can detect when I leave my home but it can't detect when I've moved from my office into my kitchen or into my bedroom. This entire area is just, Home. Maybe it could if I trained it but goodness knows I would hate to have to set adjustments based on each of the areas in my home anyway. NFC allows you to focus on the actual area. I haven't found a whole lot of use yet for my tags, but I do have one in my kitchen and bathroom which starts music on my N7. Of course, that's just really, really lazy of me vs. useful. There's also one in my car's phone mount that is set to turn on navigation when I mount the phone but I don't use that one since I have to enable GPS manually anyway.
Kevin has said everything re: the use of the tags and the stores. Some additional stores are here. Like him, I got mine from Tagstand because they look nice, were pretty cheap and they do try to beat competitor prices.
Good Luck.

Does anyone know the real max range possible of the NFC system the Nexus 4 uses or the range other devices can interface with it at? I guess really I am trying to find out if there is a way to increase the range from the official .2m / 8" to something farther away. I am trying to figure out how far away from my phone someone needs to be to read my info if I have my NFC turned on?

well for the chips in our phones, it usually needs to be within 1 inch, like a key fob RFID scanner. I've heard CLAIMS that people can do it from across a room, although I don't believe the chip has enough power to make such a connection at that distance. (Someone correct me if I'm truly wrong, because I'm curious too).
For NFC chips, it usually requires that the chip touch a specific part of the back of the phone. Same with Google Wallet on pay pass. NFC is pretty neat and can be used for various things. Like wallet, tags, sharing items with another phone, etc.

Well, the confusion is in the word "Toggle" - instead for NFC Apps let's call them "Switch Tags". This means the first time you tap them, the execute one set of commands and the second time you tap them they execute a second set of commands. But these commands can be anything. So for example you wouldn't have either set of commands "toggle" Bluetooth - instead, you'd have it "Turn BT On" or "Turn BT Off". If you're BT was already in the state then nothing would happen.
NFC was developed to use very little power - part of the reason why the range is very small and you have to pretty much tap a tag. The affect on your battery leaving NFC enabled will be barely noticeable. The apps themselves are not "always on" - the tag is programmed to trigger the app when your phone's nfc antenna detects the tag.
As for where to pick up tags, of course I'd recommend AndyTags, but I'm biased. You can check them out, but there are lots of great places to get tags. For the Nexus 4 phone, make sure to get NTAG203 tags.
Hey I am still confused on these NFC Tags. I watched some video on how it works and it looks pretty awesome but i have some questions.
For example. I have a phone holder in my car. i only use it when i use my GPS. i want to paste an NFC Tag on the holder so every time I place the phone in the holder it turns on my GPS, launches my GPS app, and maybe turns off my Wifi. From what I have seen this can easily be done.
Here is the part I am confused about. When the phone is in the holder it will be right beside the tag. What effect does that have on the tag? Is it constantly communicating?
The feature i really want is this: when I remove the phone from the holder and away from the tag can I program it to turn off the "car settings"?
So I am wondering if I can use a phone holder and NFC tags to create a dock(without the charging). Put the phone on the dock and leave it there and it changes to "car settings" and keeps it at that setting. Take the phone out of the "dock" settings turn back to non-car settings.
everything i see involves tapping.

The tag is only a marker, in Stock ROM you need to actually unlock your phone before your NFC will start pooling (There are mods for this so no worries). The actions are all programmable depending on what kind of apps you use to program it, that's all!
Personally I find tasker to be more useful than NFC tag. I don't buy all the marketing gimmicks.
I have started to tinker with NFC tags.
Is there a way to start the stock android clock timer (from zero or a countdown from a preset time) using nfc tags? I tried NFC task launcher but it just uses their own in app timer, which im not a fan of (it doesn't show time remaining/elapsed and all that stuff). Or maybe an automation app that can be triggered by a nfc task.

MotoACTV as a sleep tracker

I am a bit put off by the fact that motorola hasn't implemented a sleep tracker into the motoACTV. Given that they are pretty much all the rage nowadays with fitness trackers (ie. Fitbit zip and one, Jawbone UP, etc).
Im wondering if anyone has tried to use their rooted motoactv to run a sleep tracking app from the market place and how it worked for you? I just downloaded SleepBot (unless you have another recommendation) and am planning to try it tonight. However that app is meant to be ran on a phone, while plugged in and set near your pillow. It uses the phone's accelerometer to monitor your tossing and turning in bed, the phone's microphone to monitor your noises/snoring/sleeptalking and also requires the phone screen to be on during the whole time. That last part is what has me worried. I don't think that the motoactv has the ability to keep a screen lit, albeit the app dims the screen for you, for 8+hrs.
It would be nice to have software built into the MotoACTV like the jawbone UP does. Anyone have some input?
Tried sleepbot app. Didn't work. The screen size doesn't allow the whole app to display once in sleep mode tracking motion. The wake up button gets hidden and the app gets stuck in the tracking mode rendering pretty much useless. Tonight um trying sleep as android. This time I tested it during tracking and confirmed the app fits the screen or can be scrollable.
I was surprised to wake up and have 60% battery left.

The actv has a built in sleep tracker. DPRom has it enabled. The software is in all roms that contain the stock firmware, but the app may be disabled for some as it doesn't come with an icon to launch it. In those cases, you may be able to manually launch it using a file explorer or something. It is called "SleepAnalysis.apk".

That sucks. Hopefully they haven't completely abandoned it. I've used it the past 2 nights. It works well. Maybe they're planning to release a new smart watch and launch the finished product of the sleep analysis then. And then xda peeps will port it to motoactv!
A couple of issues I've run into with the current state of the sleep analysis is that you must be at least 80% charge before starting because over the course of your sleep it discharges by about 75%(this might be because of root and rom). The tracker works when screen is off unlike a lot of sleep tracking apps on the market for smartphones. Also it usually states that I'm awake for 1hr and been awaken 7-8 times during my sleep. I don't know how true that is. The graph is hard to read due to screen size as well. I'm sure there was going to be a syncing deal with it. To export to phone or pc.
A few things I want to learn is how exactly the motoactv knows when I'm in deep sleep/ light sleep, and what sets it off to say I'm awake. Also want to know what's the optimum way to wear it. With wrist strap or clip on hip.

Funny, I turned on marathon mode to save battery and tracked my sleep last night (which I only got 4 hrs). Turns out that the 3 second refresh caused me to be in "deep sleep" for all four hours which is bogus.
On the up side it finished the night with 80% battery which is a drastic savings over being on normal battery saver.

Well after a week of using the native sleep tracker, I've gotta say it isn't very good. I was hoping it'll give me me info sheet the initial 7 nights. But nothing. You can't view previous cycles, only the overall score. But this was to be expected because it's largely unfinished. It's a shame though. And the android Market is lacking beyond sleep as andros or sleep bot.

Are they on the market for another android device? If so, download it to that device, titanium backup, then copy the backed up apk to your computer and sideload it to the actv via adb.

Yes they are. They work but they're heavy on the battery.
As of late, the native sleep analysis application has begun to force close every time.

It does not work very well at all, it tends to drain the battery of the motoactv during the night. The app recommends you plug your phone in during use, so it is pretty power hungry.

Sleep on power removed

I'm planning on installing my Flo Nexus in my car to replace the outdated stock navigation system. I was quite interested in Timur's USB ROM but it doesn't support Flo and doesn't look like he'll be adding it after cancelling the indiegogo campaign he started to fund it.
I've spent some time searching and looking at the different kernels and roms available, and for now am running ElementalX 1.7beta with an older CM nightly.
I think this meets most of my needs, but I have one little nitpick - is there anything out there that separates the "Wake on plug" action into two separate functions? I'd like the screen to wake up when power is applied, but not when power is removed as this is going to leave the screen on when I get out of the vehicle. Ideally when power is removed I'd like it to go to deep sleep immediately.
Thanks.
I've never used the app Tasker. But isn't that what people use when trying to accomplish that?

I've used tasker for different things, but have found it unreliable when it came to power events, at least in the past. I'll definitely give it a shot and see how it works for this scenario. Thanks for reminding me.
Any other suggestions out there in case Tasker doesn't do the trick, or other votes for Tasker?
I got an app called "Caffine" which keeps the screen on while plugged in/charging, and when I turn the car off I set the backlight to 15 seconds, that way it sleeps after 15 seconds. Works great.
If you don't mind me asking, how are you installing the tablet into your car?

I have an '06 Acura TL with OEM Navi system. I'm having a car audio shop relocate the navi screen (as it's tied to climate functions but I don't need to see it) and they're putting the tablet in its place. The goal is to have things looking stock while be far from it.

How much are they charging you? Is it a common audio shop?

It's part of a complete stereo install I'm doing, and it's not cheap although it's not rip-off expensive either. I chose them because they are capable of doing good fabrication work and are going to need to put something together to hold the tablet securely in place behind the stock bezel.
Just wanted to update for people to know what I did. Tasker was the way to go to get exactly what I want, but I needed to add the Secure Settings plugin as well. With that plugin I was able to immediately turn on the screen when power is applied, as well as shut off the screen immediately when power is removed.
I've also attached other bits to these profiles, such as adjusting the CPU clock and disabling wifi/bluetooth when the screen is off. At this point I'm losing less than 10% battery for 24 hours of sleep, which is pretty good although I'd like to see if I can find any improvements. We'll see!
