i try to upgrade my A500 but failed, when i tried to update it again I got this message in the upper left corner:
secure boot: image SOS checksum fail!
but if i turn it on normally, i can still i can run the machine and use it without any problem.
i thought something might went wrong with the boot.img, so i tried to push the boot.img, but got another message when i turn on the A500 as:
secure boot : image LNX checksum fail!
now i am totally lost, once i turn it on, it will show the LNX thing, if i tried to flash it, it will show the sos thing.
unfortunetely i did not back up my recovery.img.
who can help me on this? thanks in advance!
Uh oh....that sounds like some major brickage.......sc2k is your only hope now.
So I really hope u got your UID.
If so I can instruct you how to unbrick.
Please contact me via PM with your UID.
thank you so much!
but i did not record my UID, is there anyway out? or my A500 really become a brick now?
Try if this still works:
TRY FIRST WITHOUT CONNECTING THE DEVICE VIA USB
2.c Windows (alternative method)
Download this tool (download link is nearly at the end of the page): http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
- Open the tool - Sort after VendorID - Check all devices with VendorID = 0502 and ProductID = 3325 . There is also a "Serial Number" column.
i downloaded this software and open it quite well. it shows my A500 in the device name, there are 3 A500 devices under different descriptions.
i found the serial number column and read it. is this UID for my A500?
Please PM me the value of the field. Should be a numer with 15-16 digits.
Did you have any luck in fixing the device.?

i am learning from sc2k now, hopefully i can fix it.
Awesome let me know how it goes if you can

I had the exact same thing happen with my first Iconia while trying to get around the locked bootloader (in the early pre-recovery method days).
Acer was kind enough to offer to replace it for free under warranty if I shipped it to them, but best buy replaced it for me on the spot.
I had the same prob
just download an update.zip put in ur sdcard and flash it by pressin volum down when u restart.

"Image SOS" is a bricked recovery, so no update.zip can be flashed. You must be thinking of "Image LNX" which is just a soft brick and can be recovered with update.zip
One or the other at a given time is ok. Both is bad.
ohh sry my bad...didnt read properly

In order to fix BOOT.img problems just flash an entire update.zip from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
full firmware update.zip contains it own boot.img
this is how I fix this same problem

Again, one of the op's problems is an image SOS checksum fail, which is a bad recovery image. No update.zip can be flashed without recovery.
I'm curious to see if recovery from bad SOS AND bad LNX is possible, since I couldn't get into adb, recovery, or the OS when both went bad on me. Any updates from the op?

Hi
I have a badly bricked A500 I am trying to get up and running again. I have an 11 digit CPUID but not a 16 digit one. I did have it in a text file on my SD card however it seems to have been scrambled
Using the Power/Volume + combo, It will not load any update.zip proceeds and then hangs at "Booting recovery kernel image" the White on Black Acer logo is displayed.
Using Power/Volume - combo has no effect - Just freezes with white on black Acer logo
I can go into ATX mode via the Power/Reset combo and the Acer USB drivers are installed on my Windows 7 machine and when connect windows says an ATX device is connected.
But here's where my troubles start...
I have tried APX flash but it fails without giving a specific reason
I have tried using A500 manager but it fails to change modes or retrieve anything
I have tried HC_RollbackRom_3.2.1_Gen2_tdV4 but it fails
I have tried Nvflash but I recieve the following error msg on any command - "rcm Version OX4", "Command send failed (USB write failed)"
It would seem that even though connected by USB in ATX mode, my computer is unable to talk to the Pad - does anybody have any ideas what steps I can take to get out of this mess.
Any and all help appreciated

11 digit CPUIDs aren't truly CPUIDs - they are android device IDs which do not apply here. Take a look at the SKB recovery thread to recover the CPUID from APX Mode. You can then convert CPUID => SBK using http://a500bootloaderflash.tk/sbkcalc/
Hi BlackThund3r
I did a search for an SBK recovery thread as you suggested and found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751978 (Had been doing a lot of searching for CPUID but never thought to look for SBK
Anyway that thread describes exactly my situation, It would seem it's my bad for being a windows user ha ha but I have used Ubuntu before.
I don't have time to get Ubuntu and try the steps suggested until later tonight but as the thread describes exactly my problem I am confidant it will work so thank you very much in advance.
I will reply back here with the result - Again thank you for your time and quick response.

I have followed many threads but cannot find a working solution. I will outline what I have done as briefly as possible.
While streaming to TV with HDMI, the screen switched to the android robot on his back with red triangle and "!".
I put Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1 on a SD and tried to reboot, showed robot working and then on back with "!" again.
Put in fastboot and used ADB command lines to try to put Thor recovery on, stated device locked on screen.
Entered cmd to unlock, got positive response, tried thor again, same result.
powered down, re-installed asus drivers, connected it did not connect as APX so rolled back drivers and was able to connect as APX.
Ran AFTEROTA, cannot find device
Ran Blackthund3r manager, stated a500 connected in APX mode, but when trying to get Serial program runs but returns nothing. And when trying to get logs returns "no device found" but at the bottom still shows connected in APX Mode.
I am unable to get the CPUID and the device does not boot for me to put in USB development mode so I am unsure where to go from here. Again I have spent several hours following everystep in multiple threads and I keep getting stuck. Any help in helping me return my A500 to working condition would be great. Also, before crash I was running ICS OTA stock.

i also have the same problem & also try almost everything of what you did but mine is not rooted a virgin tablet running on latest ics . i can also get into apx mode but cannot generate the uid.. i know there is a solution to this using ubuntu but i dunno how to use ubuntu or libusb or visualc+ as what it stated to generate the uid & was hoping that some1 might try to make a step by step thread in using linux or winusb in windows

heck you are in a bit of a pickle m8!!!
i think you can only use an update.zip (no cpuid required)
have a look at jdgM3NTL's thread " revert to factory stock the easy way" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839313
IF this doesnt work you'll be in for the long haul - you will need to use linux as that is the only other way to get yr cpuid - have you checked out the cpuid thread (u only need to read the OP)
there are at least 7 different methods for retrieving yr cpuid, u might try usbdeview

In response to some of your questions. Yes I meant to type Acer and not Asus, I do in fact own the Acer A500.
About my initial attempt to flash the stock ROM, I never had an unlocked bootloader, before the tablet was bricked I was running Stock ICS OTA and had never done any modifications.
I tried using USBDeview but the serial number is blank. It looks like I will have to try the Linux method. Again thank you for your help.

And this is WHY IM DONE following or using XDA THREADS. Most of the time someone experienced helps for a bit than leaves people hanging. I just unbricked my a500 when no one answered for my help. This guy here responded back and no o e help him. Hit and miss here. Go to another forum if you canr find your solution aleeady poSted. Cause if you reply or start NEW THREAD, no answer 90% time. Mine was bricked And rooted. Stuck on acer screen. Tried everything I could. No answers fron this sites threads. But I did it on my own, simple fix for apparent hard brick a500, but it was not really hard bricked. All symptons showed hard bricked. You wanna know what really fixed my tab without changing main board...?? Hint.. xbox red ring.....xda, you suck, no support for newbies here. Out. Unsubscribed..deuces. .
My old charger for the Iconia 500 broke and I got a replacement charger (not acer). When it came the iconia was already completely drained. I plugged it in, charged it, and since then the only thing that happens is this:
- I push power and after about 3s it turns white. Nothing happens on the screen, no vibration, nothing.
- I can turn the power back off by holding the button for 5s.
> I have tried holding the button longer but no difference.
> From what I have read I suspect it might somehow have gotten into APX mode?
> I have tried to read through the numerous posts on this forum but cannot quite find this same problem/am overwhelmed by the lingo.
> I have tried to connect the tablet to my PC with a microSD cable, and it lists it as APX, category unknown, APX doesn't have a driver
- Can anyone confirm/suggest what might be wrong with my tablet?
- Is this something that can be fixed at a repair shop?
- Is this something I could fix? (I have no ID's or codes for the tablet, have never played with APX mode before)
Thank you for any advice!

Hi chris, yes you are stuck in apx mode.
To fix this you must have your tabs CPUID.
The easiest way is from an old nandroid backup, thats if you have one. If you do, look in the cwm backup folder under cpuid.txt
If you dont have a backup, your only chance is thru ubuntu. There is a guide by "srbeen" stickied in the General forum.
If you can retrieve yr cpuid, post back here and we can help u get fixed. YoU will need anutha file to do this tho'. Its called babsector.rar and you can download it in post 2 in the root guide in my sig.
You will also need a rom to flash - only ICS or JB.
To summarise,
1. Retrieve the cpuid/sbk
2. Once you have that then
3. Download babsector and a rom.
4. Come back here for unbricking help.
Good luck with the cpuid/sbk, without it you can do nothing.

Thanks for your reply and your advice! It is nice to have the confirmation about what the problem is, and a step by step guide to start tackling it. I feel a bit less lost now I'm going to try to follow your steps and will let you know if I get stuck anywhere.

next steps?
Ok, so somehow (a miracle I guess) I managed to do your steps:
- installed ubuntu
- followed srbeen's steps upto the point where I got my CPUID
- got my SBK
- downloaded babsector.rar (luckily chrome offered to translate the russian site I found it at)
- unrarred it
- downloaded a ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935582 (is this an appropriate ROM?)
- unzipped the ROM and copied it to the external micro SD card
Can you point me in the right directions for the next steps?
Thanks,
Chris

Next steps?
Hi dibb_nz (and others)
I am still stuck. I have been trying several things, but none worked so far.
- I think the drivers are installed properly. When I go to device manager it lists APX under unspecified device - with Acer USB Boot recovery Driver installed under the hardware tab. It also says Model: APX, Category: Unknown
- I tried to run babsector, and it gives me an error. Before giving me the error it does get my tablet to show the text "Entering Acer Download Mode" in the topleft corner. Then I get the error "failed executing command 16 NvError 0x120002, command failure: create failed (bad data)" in the attached image.
- I also tried to follow the steps in Timmy Dean's V4 post, since I hoped maybe that would help, but that also gave me an error. (Red letters saying it failed, and to follow the steps again and try again).
I feel once more defeated, and hope you know what to do next.

OK< there is a slim chance u may be able to recover your tab.
There is a bct error - usually only one tool can repair this.
Download the apxflash tool.
Power your tab off.
Enter apx mode via the buttons - DO NOT use the tool to do this -
Connect your usb cable.
Run the tool - choose to go to the bundle market and download bundle 17.
If the apx driver has loaded and is showing in device manager then continue with the apx flash tool -
You will eventually see a window asking whether to dump and save yr bct, choose yes.
Hopefully the tool will carry on with the flash, once thats done, boot straight to recovery, complete the wipes and formats and then flash your rom.
I have done the steps below.
Just to make sure, when you are talking about the APX drivers being loaded, do you mean the one I see when I go to devices, right click on APX, choose hardware, where it says "ACER USB Boot-recovery driver" under device functions?
So when I tried to dump my own it gave me the following error (attached as image):
Unhandled exception, could not find file bct.dec.
It gave me the option to try to continue anyway, which I tried, but now it has been hanging in the screen "staging and backing up BCT, Using default BCT" for a long time...
so, does this mean it really is dead? And if so, what part of the tablet is dead? And if not (*hope*), then what else can I try?
Thanks,
Chris
ps. my tablet was never rooted, so I don't know if that complicates the matter... it does say that it needs to have been rooted to choose the dump option. Moreover, I never was able to turn USB debugging on, because I don't have access to the tablet. It does nothing besides black screen and occasionally the "Enter download mode" (but not with these steps)

Do you have the latest version of the apxflash tool....as far as I know, this is the ONLY way to fix a bct error....
So if you try and save yr tabs bct but you get the error and if u try to continue it just hangs???
The only thing I can suggest now is to power off both devices and then power on. When u get to the bct option try the default option first if it still hangs, power everything down again and this time try saving the bct again. Not much help I'm afraid, sometimes the tools do get stuck, and its best to power down and try again.

Well, I am trying to again with the default option, but it has been saying "Flashing bootloader (EBT) stage two - uploading image" for 45 minutes now, while another nvflash.exe window that popped up says "nvflash started, [resume mode]"
The tablet says "Acer Iconia APX mode" in the topleft.
I am not sure if it is doing something still (after 45 min) or that it is hanging.
I will let it sit a while longer, and if it doesn't work I will try all options again.
Will keep you posted.

oh right. the bct thing...thats a bumma m8, wish I could suggest something for ya, but my bag of tricks is empty
All I can tell u is that 'sometimes' after trying wot seems everything a hundred tries or more, something finally happens and it works...this doesn't mean you do not have a faulty memory chip, as this is just what happens...you could try it next week and it may well work....no consolation I know...
You might wanna try a friends computer (specially if they do not have win8!!) you neva know yr luck!!
Yeah, I think I'll try a couple of times, but I am pretty much ready to give up.
Thanks for all your tips along the way.

Hey guys,
a friend gave me his A500, which seems to be kind of broken after he tried to root. (No boot, recovery red triangle etc)
He did not save his cpuid or sbk, but I managed to get it with ubuntu (i hope so)
Everytime I try to flash anything, first nvflash works to get into download or apx mode
but then nvflash stucks at
"nvflash started
resume mode"
If package contains bootloader, it stucks at stage two.
Nothing happens after then.
I tried different bundles or just build twrp apx flash... still the same.
Can anyone help?
nobody ever had this problem? :/

You need to use his CPUID to generate the SBK then you can use it in the command line. see this post.

If you already have it working then disregard.
