Hey,
I just got a TF300 and I've been trying to get video streaming to work on the tab. I'm using BubbleUPNP and I've tried about a dozen video players to go with it (dice player, vplayer, moboplayer etc etc).
The issue I'm having is that the video just randomly stops. I'm not having any issues relating to video quality or file formats. I'll be streaming a video and the video will just randomly stop, and because its streaming I can't resume at the same place I have to start again.
I have not yet managed to complete a single video without it being exited at a random interval. Its not always the same place, sometimes I'll get 20minutes in, other times 10minutes of the same video file.
I'm using iSedora media center to stream across my internal LAN. I've been using this program to stream to my TV without issues for over a year.
At the moment it looks like WiFi could be the culprit however
a) I've used WiFi Analyzer to find an unused channel for my router
b) I've tested the stream right next to my router at about -20dBm to -30dBm
Any assistance here would be amazing
Thanks
FMM
Try sharing the file over the network and playing it that way via a file manager that works on shares. This will take your streaming server out of the equation.
Sounds very similar to the problem i had with my TF101 after upgrading to ICS. I was never able to finish a streaming video anywhere. Usually stopped within 2-4min.
The TF101 decided it just didn't like the d-link AP we have here anymore.
Not sure what router you have but try toggling settings such as:
Mode Settings: (Mix mode) vs G Mode - Mix Mode worked better
&
TX Rates: (Auto) vs Manual - Auto worked better.
Also interesting, after upgrading to ICS & running the speed test app the device was clearly being throttled @ ~3mbps from then forward. Prior to ICS it was testing at full (slightly variable) speed w/no issues.
Edit: I too used wifi analyzer & didn't have signal issues.
I received advice from the author of BubbleUPNP that its likely wireless dropping out, however I've tested it with about -20dBm signal strength, and I can't imagine getting it any better than this.
Apparently the TF300 has some issues with playback in rare occasions where it will just crash playback mid video and a factory reset can correct this. Giving this a go at the moment.

Might find some other help there :]

I've been trying this too using ES File Explorer and a variety of players and its a bit choppy, so I've just traded for play back problems.

I'm wondering what kind of wifi speeds are you getting out of your prophet?
I can't seem to get more than 11 mbps, although I have not done any tweaking either on access point or on the prophet. Anybody getting higher (and how?)?
You can check the speed of your connection in Settings>WLAN>Main> (look at tx rate)
When I had a 802.11B router I was getting 11mps on my Prophet. Recently I upgraded to an 802.11G router and set it to G only and now when I look at the tx rate it says "auto". So I really have no idea what my transfer rate is although I can confirm that it appears to be running about twice as fast when copying files off the network and streaming video is miles better.
When you say "video streaming" do you refer to viewing videos from the pc on your network, or internet streaming videos?
I haven't tried either, but would be interested in your insight.

Yes I mean viewing videos streamed from my pc to my Prophet via my wifi network. I used a DVD to Pocket PC ripper (I can't remember it's name offhand) and rip my entire DVD collection at the highest setting and save them all to my PC. I can then watch the movies on my Prophet via wifi and it doesn't seem to want to buffer at all. This saves me having to use up space on my SD card. Also at night when I'm in bed it's a fantastic way to catch up on all those gory action films that my wife doesn't want to watch (Kill Bill etc) not to mention at 6am when my 3yr old comes rampaging into the room and climbing on the bed I can put on the Wiggles or similar and hey presto I get another half an hour sleep
I set my router to G only mode and saw that I was getting 24 mbps with my Prophet, I don't know if that is the max or not. I have since changed my router back to b,g auto because the range in G only is fine for in the house, but for long distance B is better.
Thanks guys, that's helpful.
So is it fair to assume that if the router is positioned on auto (b/g) you will get only 11Mbps, and if you set it higher, you may achieve higher speeds?
I mean, my router is set on auto, and I have no way of setting it to g-only, so I am wondering if a new router would improve speeds....
Thanks for your input.
One more thing, How do you guys do that streaming thing? I mean I have a program which lets me see my shared folders on the PC over wifi, and I can open documents easily over the network. But whenever I click an mp3, or (god-forbid) video file, Windows Media either blocks, or says something like 'no parameter'...
What am I doing wrong?
Sorry for my tardy response (you may have already worked this out) but streaming movies with TCPMP rather than Windows Media is the bettter option. So long as you have your network set up (ie. can browse to shared folders on you pc) then it's just a case of within TCPMP "open file" and browsing to the shared area you have on your network that contains your movies .... and play. Likewise for MP3s.
For some reason I cannot get it working the same using Windows Media .... which does not bother me at all because I prefer TCPMP.
Hope this helps ... you you need any more info just ask ... I'll try to be a bit swifter this time
Hey thanks a lot for the answer. I had already tried with TCMPC player and streaming worked splendid... No probs at all...
My only worry for the prophet now is battery time...

You might possibly get a faster through put with G only, but in theory with auto mode it should switch to B mode only when the signal is very weak. I switched my router to G only mode just to verify that my Prophet was capable of G speeds.
Hi,
Is anyone successfully using ORB (www.orb.com) and streaming either video content or live TV to their TyTN?
I can stream perfectly but even in full screen landscape mode the picture is still only about the size of a postage stamp in the center of the screen with the rest of the screen black
I have heard of some people using TCPMP from coreplayer, however this is even worse as the screen (and sometimes the entire phone) just freezes within about 2 seconds of the stream starting. Another problem with TCPMP seems to be that it sometimes asks me if I want to overwrite the live.wmv file which suggests that it is downloading it instead of streaming it
Anyway, I'd much rather have it working in WM10 if only the screen would resize it properly.
Another problem is that I can't stream from my WiFi connection, even at home if I want to stream video I have to use GPRS because I get an error on WiFi (using WM10).
Thanks,
Mark
I use Orb very regularly. I use it with WMP10 on my Tytn and I do not experience the problem that you mention.
The only advice I can offer is that perhaps the the downsizing happens automatically as a result of your network speed. You'll notice that when you log into Orb, the very first thing is does is perform a speed test of the network. It is highly likely the result of that test dictates the resolution and bitrate of video that it streams to your device. I get it full screen with no problem. I'm on Cingular's UMTS in the US. Check that speed test and see what speeds it is getting.
As far as the Wi-Fi goes, I wish I could help you. I can also stream with no problems over Wi-fi. At least you know it's not a limitation of Orb or your device.
After reading your comments I decided to trick Orb into thinking that I was on a fast connection.
I loaded the Orb webpage and did the speedtest using wifi, then turned wifi off and started streaming some live TV...
You're right, it played in full screen
Now if only I could set up my wifi to stream rather than just browse then I'd be sorted!
Thanks,
Mark
Check all your Wi-Fi settings because it doesn't seem to make sense that you can stream over radio but not Wi-Fi. Make sure that the Wi-Fi connection you link up to is set to connect to whatever your main internet connection is on your phone. Also check the router (if you're trying this at home with a wireless router) and make sure your router isn't blocking anything, although when I installed Orb, it configured itself to go through my router without needing any manual input from me, which was nice

Well my Dlink DI-524 isn't quite so helpfull
I've traced the problem to my router, and I can now stream by manually assigning an IP address to the TyTN (as opposed to DCHP) and then putting that IP into the routers DMZ (demilitarised zone).
I'm not sure how safe it is doing that but at least it works now

I haven't found anything on here for Orb. Doesn't anyone use it? It is so useful on winmo (specially the diamond with only 4 gb of internal storage) and it would be even better on the G1.
Supposedly orb says it works, can anyone here get it to work on 3G? It works if you are connected to your own personal wifi, but when you connect to someone elses (or 3G) you get an error.
Are you using the orb website?
And is your computer open on the right ports?
I am going through orb.com on my g1. I never changed anything on my computer. It was working fine with my sprint diamond, and even worked somewhat OK with my sprint instinct, but not with this g1 I can't get anything to stream via 3G.
Have no idea about ports and stuff. I know that orb gave a link to some sort of complicated thread about changing stuff, I didn't want to get all technical until I find out that is the only method.
I tried changing formats and speeds but nuttin.
It may be the new t-mobile settings they are now redirecting images on the data connections to compress them... maybe for audio too?
I am able to browse my orb page, but when I try to stream video I am unable to open the feed with anything. It worked great with my tilt even t-mobile's edge. If somebody is watching tv using orb on their g1, give everyone some idea as to how you are using it. What type of feed are you using there are a few, I figure it has to be one of the 3 .3gp streams. Will play with it again when I get home.
Thanks,
Manny
It's probably a problem with not forwarding ports. I'll look into it.
I have it working on my setup... I am using Video Player and that is what picked up the movie...
Also audio plays as well going through the music player.
I am not seeing any issues I suspect they are with your computer or internet connection. I have my computer set up in a way that allows all ports to be forwarded in and out... This is part of my speciality so of course I know exactly what I am doing so I can do it but I don't suggest everyone to do it.
The other thing is if your connections up speed (smaller of two numbers normally) is low you will have issues. Because of the 3G being faster than edge it may have issues. I would suggest checking issues with your network speed while on the orb page.
What is the stream type? Flash? WMV...what? The video player launches on mine but it states the format is not supported. Can someone look into their Settings and post results? Thanks.
Its great over wifi. Doesn't stream videos well over 3G. Audio is fine though.

Your speciality? I didn't know that 30 seconds in a router took that much skill...
I have it set up a little differently LOL not just your normal NAT or DMZ style, I actually have a business line to my house for my job and I keep my work computer and my personal computer on seperate networks and the server has a seperate IP as well that is connected to both networks. Like I said I know what I am doing been in the business for quite some time and this is what I do for a living. I don't have any firewalls on the server it is completely open... but I don't think you will be getting in any time soon HEHE.
On the codec side... I have to check other videos to see if they work because the video I streamed was meant to play on the G1... but the codec is 3gp-aac/rtsp format
All videos work at that codec... makes it easier to watch videos now LOL
Mine works pretty well over wifi and network. I think what had happened to me was when I first tried testing it there wasn't a video app yet and I didn't bother to try it again until now. Back when I first got the phone. 3gp-aac/rtsp stream works for me, every once in a while it does tell me it can't play a video, but if I restart the stream it work.
I can connect and get my picture and music files but I can't get video or TV...I'm thinking it has to be something with the stream settings because I have a video that plays off my SD card but wont play when I try connecting through orb to same video file on my computer. What speed do you recommend? Can we stream TV at this point or is that out because of limited file formats?
Orb working for me
Orb is working just fine for me. Audio, video, everything. The only issue I have is when my phone switches from 3g to edge at work, it comes up and says that I can't play the video. I then restart from the same point, and it works fine. I just had to forward my ports.
port forwarding huh? Mind posting a link to for a step by step?

How exactly would you stop 0day exploits without a firewall? Or do you just pretend those don't exist... ?
My server acts not only as a server but a router as well... it doesn't have a conventional firewall. I worked for a security company that looks at all incoming traffic and can route and block traffic that looks malicious. It is not a firewall it is a routing program in itself. This runs on my main server that can route to Network A, B, or C. As I said I do this for a living my garage is a "server farm" or as good as it can be for residential.
I have not had any attacks in over 3 years... I think I am doing pretty good.
I have used orb with my G1 and 3G and it streamed sirius just fine. that was with usirius as well, also it was with original rc now I am at 30 it may not work havent tried it yet
Just upgraded (update.zip) Epic 4g to Froyo and have started having bitrate capping issues where the stream rate caps out at 375k. I am using a Monsoon Vulkano app streaming live TV over 3G. Before the update (on Android 2.1) I could get steady rates of 1.0-1.5k and it was a great picture.
The first time I started the app after the upgrade it was getting a fast bitrate but the video kept stopping because the app kept "optimizing". I thought it was an app issue.
I tried to test other app versions…. reinstalled 1.0.70 from the market, tried 1.0.54 and 1.064 and 1.0702T. Also tried restoring the app from my pre-upgrade backup. All versions have the same issue. I previously re-set the Sprint RTSP proxy to 0's to avoid the possibility of a proxy issue.
I thought it might be the 3G connection I also tried the 4g connection but same issue.
This issue wasn't present until I upgraded Android.
Anyone else having RTSP or other streaming issues after upgrading to EB13?
I've been having difficulty streaming youtube videos, even while on wifi. The stream will be perfect, then will buffer for 15 seconds before playing again. My wifi is a 10 Mbps connection so there's no reason for it to buffer
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791156
Thanks. I've already de-proxied my phone though. Still having issues.
EB13 is hit and miss. GPS fixed, Streaming issues. Install to SD Card, Camera Issues.
I get terrible performance out of both 2.4 and 5ghz on my tab 7.7
It's unfeasibly slow at pretty much anything over wifi (e.g. browsing LAN files, anything other than basic web pages, etc.)
I'm sitting here with it right next to a SE Xperia Active, HTC Desire S and SE Experia Mini Pro.
The 2 sonys & the HTC can stream HD video from my NAS using nothing but ES File Explorer and the MX video player.
The 7.7, on the other hand refuses to even load the video most of the time and then stalls after the first 3 seconds. Stock ROM, nothing else running, 3 metres from the router (Netgear WNDR4000).
Same story using Plex, and Subsonic
speedtest.net shows 36.5Mbps so there's noting wrong with my web speed, so I'm thinking it must be something technical to do with how the Samsung's network adapter is set up to handle traffic.
Sorely disappointed at this bit of kit.
You have a Point
i just ran the FCC test software with the following results with FIOS wireless network:
Samsung Note
Download 12.71 Mbps
Upload 18.24 Mbps
Latency 12 ms
Samsung Tab 7.7
Download 6.43 Mbps
Upload 3.06
Latency 84ms
Per Samsung Tab 7.7 website: The Galaxy Tab 7.7 features an innovative metal design. Do we have another Asus Transformer Prime WiFi problem??
I ran the WiFi test using HK OFTA apps (I'm based in HK) on several different devices and it gave me the following.
Galaxy Tab 7.7 3G
Download: 25mbps
Upload: 25mbps
Latency: 7ms
Galaxy S i9000
Download:16mbps
Upload: 20mbps
Latency: 9ms
IPad2 3G
Download: 25mbps
Upload: 25mbps
Latency: 20ms
Samsung R60+ Notebook (54g WiFi)
Download: 14mbps
Upload: 17mbps
Latency: 3ms
Router is TPLink WR841N (100mbps WAN port) connected to 300mbps PCCW fiber broadband.
The performance looks fine to me and it feels faster than my classic Tab which I traded for the new Tab.

May I propose you to change your router WiFi channel and retest. Sometime the channel is too congested (too much interference) and it could cause performance degradation. Also make sure the device support the channel your WiFi router is in.
Seems more of os / software issue.
I have tested mediatomb + several video players.
From memory:
dice player only one that could do hw acceleration for m2ts formats (renaming extension .m2ts to .ts)
For example I have a m2ts bluray ray clip:
According to mediainfo it is 28 Mbps video bitrate (max overall bit rate is 48.0 mbps)
Copied locally to sd card with dice player -> it plays like 95% ok still in avsync but noticeable skipped frames.
I tried same file over wifi -> plays like 90% ok still in avsync but will stutter in high action sequences.
So it looks like media playback should be ok over wifi -hopefully with ics, and customised roms to to follow.
I have another clip m4v format ~ probably like 4Mbps h264 high profile.
This time dice player stuttered to play it over wifi (but over sd card it played fine).
Tried bs player & played it back perfectly over wifi .
As long as we have honeycomb, looks like a bit of hit & miss at the moment
I am coming from the 8.9 and the 7.7 I think has much better wifi performance. The tab 7.7 picks up a signal in my house where the 8.9 did not.
That FCC test app defaults to a server in Seattle. I'm wondering if people won't see better performance if they go into the settings and choose a city closer to their area. I'd bet that you'd get the same results with the Tab as you would with a computer plugged into the router directly via ethernet with a server that's further away.
At any rate, the Speed Test app by Ookla automatically picks a server based on lowest ping time, and looks spiffier.

dude tw is a memory hog. media playback of my bluray clip improved to near bang on from local sdcard.
how long for ics - should start rocking then!
ok - there might be an issue with some sort of tcp scaling size algorithm not being enabled by default. Another update Samsung
only guestimating here so can you try this from command line / terminal:
setprop net.tcp.buffersize.wifi 4095,131072,1596608,4096,16384,110208
restart your player app and try media playback blacback over wifi - is it any better?
basically increased Max read size (3rd figure)
to go back to default
setprop net.tcp.buffersize.wifi 4095,131072,196608,4096,16384,110208
(taken from init.rc)
A lot of follow-up posts on here about internet performance - that's not the issue for me - data speeds are fast enough, but not for streaming from my LAN NAS, so I'm something to do with the way specific network traffic is handled by default with this device's wifi adapter.

That has made a difference - the videos now do load - but are still unwatchable without using some kind of server server side stream - e.g. subsonic & then quality is poorer than my wife's SE devices, the HTC Desire S & even my son's Galaxy Y.

KC1 - i take it you have changed your home launcher from touch wiz to another one, set as default. Re-boot. It makes a lot of difference.
Also have you tried different players - dice player is good for me.
As i say, can pretty much stream 1080p native bluray m2ts files "smoothly" (when within v.good range of wifi signal) from my nas setup + mediatomb through wifi. So defn. not a hardware issue. Other media formats (except vc1) should be no problem.
I am assuming that your media player can do hardware decoding off your files too, otherwise you might have problems wilth high bit-rate files.

Yes MX Player can, but not necessary on the other devices, and fails to load the video using HW encoding on the Tab. Have also tried VPlayer and QQPlayer, & whatever Plex uses - all of which work fine on the other devices. Will explore Dice player. Also, as I said above, I can watch videos on the other android devices without the need for server side streaming (like mediatomb?), using just ES Explorer plus a player.

Maybe not, but maybe a driver or throughput configuration issue, since this hardware should be superior to the phones I mentioned.
Dont think this will work for you. I compiled native cifs module for this kernel so should work better than esfile explorer of mounting samba /windows share and streaming of files. in essence it is seeing as a local filesystem. Samsung have changed something in their kernel and streaming was poor for me via this method.
I would suggest set up a basic upnp server and try that method - it should work for the time being.

It's in the dev section but as i said i had problems streaming media using cifs but normal file transfers, browsing folders works fine. So switched to http/upnp and my media streams fine now.
I also keep losing my wifi connection to my dir825 dlink. The wifi performance is worse than my original galaxy tab! Is this inherent in the hardware or might it be resolved via update? I have installed the latest ota update.

For playing media files from samba shares you need https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free bsplayer light. It is the only player with an integrated lan browser that can use HW acceleration over files from lan. It its working perfectly on my Note.
