If your light is on, and the display is black, you are probably stuck in APX mode. Long press the power button and it should go off.
I would also plug into a charger if I were you, before doing anything else.
You will probably need to NVFlash the bootloader and recovery. If it didn't work well the first time, then you should probably be checking drivers. With the tablet in APX mode (hold pinhole button, press and hold PWR, count to 3 seconds, release PWR, then 1 more second and release pin hole.). Tablet should have black display with lit pwr button.
Plug into USB, and make sure windows recognizes it as a Recovery Device. If not, load the right drivers (I use Google USB Android drivers). Might have to load them manually.
Now, I know you wrote down your UID number somewhere, as you will need it.
I uploaded an old ver3 NVFlash package;
http://www.4shared.com/zip/Lgp9DhiH/NVFLASH_Blackthund3r_3bootload.html
Open a CMD window in the directory you extracted, and type run_all
Make sure you get your tab in APX mode, and windows recognizes it. Then follow the prompts. At the end, if good, it should say "Pass"
It doesn't require USB Debugging. If you can get into APX mode, it may work for you. If not, you might post in the bootloader threads.
Link to converting your UID to SBK is found in the guide you posted earlier.
Good Luck!

download at the top afterota and there should be a get out of apx mode, but in apx mode you hold down the power and the light will go of then you hold it again and it will boot

IF yr recovery drivers have loaded when you are in apx and yr cpuid is correct
then u may have a tab that has issues with the "bct"... the devs are working on a fix for this....
most of us with this issue rolled back to HC using timmydeans EUU then reflashed the bootloader from there with no probs...go figure???
EDIT: the EUU is for a500 you will not have 3g but its just to get back to HC with - when it comes to flashing the bootloader again be sure to
flash yr chosen ics rom first...
as far as more info take a look at civs b/l or F/R extreme rom threads (last 5-6 pages) - the flash itself should take no more than a minute
or two, i use nvflash as it provides a bit of feedback to you if things aren't quite right
you will need td's EUU link in my sig
and jazzyjames tutorial on how to rollback to HC
you will lose ALL your data not only b/c the EUU wipes it but also
ics system apps dont take kindly to being dragged back to HC so make sure you do a full wipe and format any chance you can
for running a glitch-free ICS

Heck, I e-mailed it to you also earlier.
Well, Dibb's is pretty good on this stuff, so I'll pass it to him. Try his steps. He's pretty good on unbricks also.
For me, it's a bit late. Work tomorrow mate.
Also, make sure you are using a good USB cable. You can't always use phone cables. The newer HTC USB cables work for me. This has been known to make things go wonky.

How to rollback from ICS leak
***THIS WILL WIPE YOUR DATA***
What you need:
EUU from Timmydean of 3.2.1 V4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
Your CPUID
Your CPUID was probably changed when you flashed the ICS leak.
How you can find it in the ICS leak
Download and install a terminal emulator from the market and enter in the following.
dmesg > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt
Copy that file to your computer and open it or open it in a text editor on your A500
Look for androidboot.serialno= and the number is listed is your CPUID.
***DO NOT PLUG TABLET INTO COMPUTER UNTIL STEP ******
1. Download and extract root-3.2.1-V4
2. Run PBJ20upgrade.exe (right click and run as administrator).
3. Click Ok on Make sure your ICONIA TAB is not connected to a computer. If a "New Hardware Wizard" window appears, click "Cancel".
4. Click Next
5. Let it install the USB drivers
6. Click Next on Go to Settings/Applications/Development to enable "USB debugging" (see the picture)
7. It will try and scan for the current image version and new image version, this will take about 5 minutes.
8.
Follow the steps to get your A500 into APX mode.
1. Turn off the ICONIA TAB by long pressing the power button for 5 seconds.
2. Use a paperclip to push the reset button, don't release it.
3. Press the power button for 3 seconds.
4. Release the power button
5. Wait for 1 sec and take out the paperclip.
6. Use the USB cable to connect ICONIA TAB and PC
7. Click Yes
THIS WILL WIPE YOUR DATA.
8. Type in your CPUID, click next.
This will reset your tablet to a Rooted 3.2.1. Once it boots up you can install Acer Recovery installer from the market and install CWM recovery and restore your ROM or flash a new one.
Thanks for writing this up.

Thanks, i did this last night. There is another way with CWM directly installed, so you can do a CWM nand restore immediately after the process. I'll post that later today. Currently at the swimmingpool for my son's swimming lessons.

On a501
this should work on a501 too right? coz i dont see any androidboot.serialno in my dmesg.txt
edit :- it works. dmesg > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt has to be issued in terminal within few seconds after we reboot the system.
THANKS!

no i removed the 0x before pasting it and if i enter it a 2nd time it accepts it but progress bar looks and stays like this forever
[|||||||_________________________]
never moves passed that also the tab wont enter recovery says the recovery.img is incorrect or something to that effect.
Dunno why but it says please download the newer image for the upgrade... then just an exit button... does nothin?
EDIT: Never mind... I re-read the post... but I accidentally pulled the USB while it was 'upgrading' is that a problem as now it doesn't work any more?
EDIT2: Oh thank god! It tells you when it works because it says enter Acer Download Mode in the top left in small writing. Seems pretty fool-proof and robust to me, thank you JazzyJames.
EDIT3: Oh crap it failed again... now it wants me to restart it.. :'(
EDIT4: All good 3.2 booted! Thanks again.
(I put all this up for the people like me so they don't have multiple heart attacks either.)
Worked perfectly first try. Thank you!

That's more like your PC not recognizing your tablet in apx mode then. Make sure the driver is installed. If you go to device manager you will be able to check if the driver is installed or not.
i must be screwing up something simple, because when i try and get into apx mode the tablet vibrates, shows the black acer screen and instantly shuts down. i can power on just fine without holding reset but cant figure out apx mode.
a couple times i managed to get it to boot into the lock screen, says "Charging, 0%" with my wifi connecting but no screen response. works fine after a 5-second power button shut off and rebooting. cant figure out apx mode at all for some reason.

The best way to know if your in APX mode is when the screen is off and your power button is white. You don't need to be EXACT on the times of holding down power and reset, the main thing is.
Hold Reset atleast 3 seconds
Continue to hold reset and add power button.
Release power after about 3 seconds.
Then release reset, screen will be blank and power button is white, I myself noticed it works best if the tablet is not fully charged and not plugged into charge.

You should have posted a freaking warning that this deleted EVERYTHING off of our tablets. I lost pictures of my daughter that I'll never get back because of this method and there was no warning what so ever. Generally wiping data means wiping data, not /mnt/sdcard.
Just a question before jumping on this: I have installed the leaked stock 4.0.3, so I lost everything with regards to rooting. Also I can not use Busybox, SuperUser, CWM et all on my Iconia.
With this method I can fallback to 3.2.1 even though I have the stock leaked 4.0.3 installed?
Also the CPUID is not the original one from before flashing the stock 4.0.3, but the CPUID I got from flashing with 4.0.3. Is this a problem?

What have we learned?
Back-up files that are important to you.
Take the time to learn about what these tools do before using them.
That being said, the OP should include that ALL data on the tablet will be wiped.
PS: /mnt/sdcard is actually in the data partition (/data/media). Custom recoveries skip over the /media directory when doing a data wipe, by default.
Hit quote instead of edit. My apologies.
Did a restore and it worked flawlesly. Thanks for the clear instructions!
Jesus..i spent so many hours trying to get the computer to see the tablet in apx mode and it just won't..any ideas on how to get the drivers installed correctly? Adb is installed and i have rooted quite a number of phones so i know its not Adb
Edit: Got it! I had to manually add the damn drivers through device manager.. thank you everyone for the help!!
Motorola ATRIX 4g phone, and ATT is discharged and the battery during the update.
Now it is switched on, type "Failed to boot Nvflash 0x1000 Entering recovery mode."
APX Nvflash tried to start but windows 7 does not recognize the device manager did not even know.
What should I do? This field may improve through usb?
thank you
depending on where your phone ran out battery it may be a brick, or you may be able to recover it...
Take the battery out and put it back, then hold Volume down and boot the phone. IF you see "fastboot" (Press the up key) and hope you boot into fastboot mode
You can also press down to see if you can get to RSD....
If you can get to these 2 then you can recover your phone...If it gets stuck on starting nvflash and doesn't give you a menu then your phone is bricked.
No, that won´t work as he is stuck with an empty battery and if the phone won´t boot the battery won´t charge. Catch 22
Either charge the battery in your backup Atrix
or search for the "McGyver method", which means sacrificing a USB cable. Oh well...
What's wrong...........

Battery charged 80% of the vol up + power does not respond to the power + vol down to either the Irish problem APX installed but nvflash RCM 0x4 version.
Could not be fixed some way because it would be urgent!
Non-root your phone and locked the bootloader, RSD does not come in!
noob troubleshooting
OK we all have to try read and fail. Atrix 4g with 2.3.6 Unlocked and rom manager, titanium backup attrix 2 boot strap. What I did. did search and found this great reading rom. Followed all the info. Reboot great. Works. OK all but it will not access data other than in wifi. email, browers both say no connection. I have gone back and tried to clear all data and load other ROM. Can't get any of the ROMS. to load. either through update.zip or named.zip. Here's the stupid part. It was a victory ROM v2.0 it was for a samsung captivate. the link brought me across and I didn't look at the top to see if it was a dang attrix. Any idea on which how to get at least the data to work other then the wifi? I can access the recovery mode and it will reload the VictoryROM but nothing else. As F Gump says Stupid is ..as stupid does.
appreciated

I don't understand half of the things you wrote...
If you hold vol down and press power...Does your phone boot and go into fastboot mode? Yes/No (It will say "fastboot" and pressing Vol Down will cycle other options....Then you have to press Vol Up to enter into Fastboot mode)
If it's "NO" then when it does boot do you have any other options besides NvFlash? If yes then you can recover, if no then your phone is bricked.
Victory, and A2 Bootstrap? wont work on a 4G. Either you are in the wrong forum or you have managed to put A2 tools on a 4G, which shouldn't work, and apparently doesnt.
If you can get to CWM, put a copy of CM7 on the sd card, CWM flash it. clear caches. etc.
Hope it helps
Right... I spent the last 6 hours reading through the forum and Googling about this problem. I learnt a lot (!), but cannot solve the problem, and I now hope someone can help me
Sorry for the lenghty post, but there's a lot of information to share...
Yesterday, my long-awaited Nexus 7 (8Gb) finally arrived. It worked just fine for an hour or so: I got online without any issue, Calendar, Photos, GMail and Contacts were nicely synching and I was really starting to get impressed about the speed and features.
I did download a couple apps, more specifically Aldiko & Moon+ Reader ebook reader apps, and Facebook).
Suddenly --I believe I just started the Facebook app-- the screen turned black and showed strange stripes. The device rebooted and got stuck on the black screen with the white "Google" text. I let it sit there for a while and then instinctively tried to power-off the device by holding the power button for 10 seconds or so. It did indeed reboot, but when the tablet booted up, it popped back to the black Google screen and just sat there.
FYI: The USB cable was connected all of the time, and the first time I plugged the Nexus in, my Win 7 64bit machine recognized the tablet and loaded the drivers for it.
When it got stuck, I decided to continue charging it, thinking that maybe the battery wasn't fully charged and the cause of the problem. I hooked it up to the official charger in a wall socket and let it sit there for a while, while I started searching the web for a solution. After about 30 minutes, when I had read about the power+volume button combination, I tried this combination (until then the Google page showed for more than 30 minutes). The Nexus indeed showed the Fastboot screen, and I had to plug it back in the PC's USB to get the buttons "start", "recovery mode", "power off" and "restart bootloader" working. None of them had any effect.
The fastboot screen showed the product name "grouper", the lock state as "locked"; the bootloader as version 3.34 and the HW version as ER3.
I downloaded the "Nexus root toolkit" from WugFresh and tried to flash it back to "stock" with Android 4.1.1 JRO03D. The tool did show my serial number, btw.... Until then, I had good hopes, but then it went wrong: the tool downloaded the files, unpacked them and said something about "wiping flash" and everything froze. After about 20 minutes, I concluded it had locked-up and unplugged the device.
It now seems to be completely "bricked"...
I can no longer get to the fastboot screen; Not even with the 3-button trick... it always shows the Google screen and immediately shows the "dead robot" screen with the exclamation mark.
The Nexus does not start up Android, so I cannot activate ADB/ USB debugging...
The device is no longer recognized by my PC; the PC doesn't make the "USB hooked up/disconnected" sound anymore
I tried uninstalling the drivers and installed the "naked drivers", no solution -- they show up with yellow exclamation marks
I installed the SDK, and "fastboot.exe devices" shows nothing
I downloaded the "Nexus 7 Toolkit 2.0"; I cannot access the tablet, no serials show, drivers cannot be installed
FYI: I did not try to root it or unlock it. I rebooted my PC, I power-cycled the Nexus, I changed USB ports, sigh...
I'm afraid I actually bricked my device... If so indeed, and given the fact that I cannot access the device with any of the tools/toolkits, is there anything I can do to put it back to factory settings?
Someone else may chime in with some help, but I think using the toolkit screwed you. Had you just used fastboot while you had the bootloader up you could have reflashed the stock rom yourself using the file from here and these commands.. but since you can't get into the bootloader now I think its hosed, but I could be wrong though.
I just noticed that when I press the power + volume up button, my PC detects it as an "Asus Transformer Prime APX Interface"?
Would this be another "way in"? (found something about NVflash on Google?)
Here are two threads on the topic, however I don't think they restore it that way since mostly its done thru the bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879228
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882753
and people still continue to use toolkits because its easier. in reality its just easier to mess upon your device. reading through the forums i have yet to see someone that messed up their device with fastboot oem unlock amd fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.
To be honest; I feel the toolkits are great for people that know what they're doing and understand the process and are just looking for a quick way to do it.
People that are new to the rooting scene and don't understand the process are the people that SHOULDN'T be using these toolkits. They need to learn about the process and do it a few times manually before even attempting the toolkits.
OK guys, I got the message and yep, shouldn't have used the toolkit. **guilty** :cyclops:
But what advise do you guys have? Would the APX/NVFlash path make sense?
Or can you advise how to get support from Google/Asus in Belgium (bought tablet in Staples US )
thanks!
Considering it doesn't seem anyone has used NVFlash to restore it looks like you are going to have to return/exchange/RMA whatever option is available to you, unless its figured out
i see you pressing volume up and down and power button to get into the bootloader.. but thats wrong. its power button + volume down to get into the bootloader(maybe thatll make a difference for you). but yea, chances are that youll need to go for an exchange/repair.
Nvflash should work though. I haven't used it since.my last tablet and.unfortunately I forget how to use it. I don't think zip files can be used. I think someone could help him that knows how to set up a folder of files for nvflash.

Dont think you can flash those files thru recovery, I already posted that link for him unfortunately without the bootloader I think hes hosed
In order to use these files, you need to have the fastboot tool in your PATH. That tool is compiled as part of every configuration of the Android Open-Source Project and is the tool used to flash custom builds on your device. On GNU/Linux systems, this also implies that you have configured USB access as mentioned in the machine setup instructions.
Your device needs to be in fastboot mode, with the bootloader unlocked. The relevant key combinations and commands are documented on the page about building for devices.

I installed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619913 via CWM/recovery menu ver 5.5 or so and rebooted, power + volume up didn't give me a menu so I tried to reinstall the ICS bootloader, it installed like the time before except I got messages from my recovery menu like it couldn't write logs to disk (thought that was fine - thought it was being overwrote) so restarted my tablet and... nothing was unresponsive (black screen no blacklight) so I held the power button down until it shut down.
I've tried power/volume up, tried using the reset button to get into APX mode - didn't see the tablet on my computer(But I may have been impatient), tried power/volume down repeatedly, unplugged the battery and rebooted - nothing.
After I shut it down it's responsive like it's functioning somewhat, it'll turn on and off but no blacklight and nothing on the screen or vibrations.
USB debugging is on, I don't know my id
Anyone with similar problem? How did you fix it? :\
edit: apx mode is indeed working

"This bootloader can only be flashed using nvflash. You can use the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1622425"
This is from the OP of the thread you linked to...and is the reason you have ended up "bricked?" If you had followed the guide you would have saved yourself alot of grief....You cannot, I repeat, cannot flash the bootloader or an ICS rom via cwm
I've tried power/volume up,

This is "fastboot mode" only available on the unlocked bootloader
tried using the reset button to get into APX mode

to get into APX MODE use a paper clip to press and hold the reset button,
then press and hold the power button for 3 secs and release it - after another second release the reset button.
Your tab screen will be black and the power light will be on
- didn't see the tablet on my computer(But I may have been impatient),

yeah, impatience can cause alot of problems - to fix this you must have the acer drivers installed and the USB drivers from the android sdk

you must get this to have any hope of recovering your tab - go to the cpuid link in my sig - theres a guide there by "srbeen" on how to retrieve your cpuid with linux - the only other way i know for someone in your position is "usbdeview" - that is in the same post,

Patience and following instructions to the letter!!! You must use nvFlash to fix this - I have given you enough info for you to recover your tab BUT you cannot do anything without your cpuid - so I suggest you begin by reading the cpuid guide thoroughly first - everything you need is in there...
As Dibbs informed, when you update your bootloader to V8, you can only do this via NVFlash.
For those of us who installed all Skirlax_CZ bootloaders, the CWM function did not arrive till Version 4 of the bootloader. Only then could you CWM the bootloaders. But..... you had to be on a version 4 bootloader "First", before you could CWM the subsequent versions of the bootloader.
If you are just starting out, then you must use NVFlash to initially install any version of the bootloader.

Hi there,
I have an A500 Iconia Tab that's been stuck in APX mode for a while now. I've tried to retrieve my info with blackthund3r's tool but nothing worked. If anyone could provide a step-by-step for me, it'd be greatly appreciated.
I've also tried resetting my tab by holding down the vol- and power button, that didn't work either.
Thanks,
Rich
You need the cpuid b4 you can do anything, that's yr first priority. See the cpuid guide in my Sig.
To get out of apx mode, just rebo or....hold the power button until the white power led goes out, then power on again - hold pwr button in 5 secs till led comes on. Now, wot do u see??
If you've bricked it or it won't boot to the OS run the babsector file in the root guide in my Sig.
Make sure you have Acer and sdk drivers installed. If yr pc is 64bit or win 8 you'll have a mission on yr hands. I think someone has posted a workaround in last couple of days but don't quote me on that

Hey Dibb,
I've already tried everything in your sig to get the CPUID:
(1) From a PC using Blackthund3rs A500 manager - start --> opening server ---> stalls ---> closing server
(2) From your device using Terminal Emulator App --> Can't access tablet
(3) From USBDeview must have previously used the Tab under HC with the PC you're using --> Tried, not located
(4) From a uid.txt in any Honeycomb-cwm backup in external_sd/clockworkmod/backup/"your_HC_backup" folder --> no backups available
(5) From adb devices if you're running honeycomb --> N/A
(6) From cwm 1.7.2 via on screen display and a text file - great if you are on ICS already --> Can't access tablet
(7) From a working system in /sys/firmware/fuse/acer_cpuid --> Can't access tablet
(8) Gersma's OTA Tool --> turned off UAC and tried but tool claimed to have problems accessing tablet even though Device Manager had tablet as "acer-recovery"
Toggling the power button does nothing - it's white when the tab is powered "on" and dark when the tab is powered "off".
I have never seen the ACER logo that others have seen. My screen has always been black.
I definitely have the Acer driver installed but which SDK drivers are you referring to? I've tried installing the Google and Naked drivers found on this site but they didn't help.
I think I tried babsector as well but I don't recall what happened, but since my tablet is still non-functional, I'm going to say it didn't work ha.
Any other ideas?
Linux is the only other way, srbeens method.
If u think u have the drivers installed correctly the only other thing I can suggest is to power off. Then put yr tab in apx mode via the buttons. Getting the reset button in can be 'awkward' but timing is not so crucial. As long as there's a delay between the holding in of the reset and pushing the pwr btn in - then a delay between releasing the pwr button then the reset. Don't use a pin or anything sharp to push the reset pin in, they can slip off easily, use a paperclip, an earring stud...anything with a squarish, flat bottom.
Then run babsector or any other EUU based Rom. Leave the auto tools alone for the meantime they're no use to atm.
Good luck!
