Comming from a Galaxy Note.. Which had the famous black crush issue..
I cannot believe they didn't fix it..
It's a effect under low lighting conditions. All the darker background would appear as blocks in videos..
so sad
The purpose of this thread is to inform those who are wanting to upgrade to the S3 to rethink twice. I for one wanted to get the s3 because my Gnote had this issue..
Edit: For those who understand this issue, does it happen on your S3?

ink marks are the same as the black crush effect that you're talking about. Those are visible blocks of inks under low light conditions on black background

I don't think it is the same issue... I saw black crush, it's a different issue.
well I might be wrong but these vary. they may be spots or blocks. can you try to reproduce the same effect on photoshop?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's really simple, famous "ink blotches/spots" are static and always appear in same place while crushed black appear in different places depending on what you're viewing, you can easily spot it in movies.

Hola
I have a Galaxy Note and yes the black crush issue is a bloody mess. It is a primary reason why I would move away to the S3. I was only hoping that this issue was surely fixed in the S3, very very sad to hear this!!!
OP can you please post a pic of it if possible, their may be many others on the S3 that do not yet understand this problem. I'll see if I can find any decent pix on the Note forums on this issue.
Thanks for this info.

This is very hard to capture on a camera.. Given this only happens on low lighting conditions. If you find a pic of it, i would gladly put it in OP
I had the Galaxy Note and am very familiar with the black crush problem. The first thing I did when I got my S3 was to replay all the videos I had a problem with.
I didnt have any issues at all, There is no black crush problem on the Galaxy S3. Well not on mine anyway.

You sure your talking about the black crush problem. That was visible on all light conditions. Whenever a video with dark scenes would run you could see blocks everywhere and that was annoying has hell. The Galaxy S3 does not have that problem in my experience while using it.
Edit: I just went to YouTube and played back the same videos I had the problems with on the Galaxy Note, again eveything was perfect. Pure deep blacks. No disgusting blocks everywhere.
The OP of this tread is most likely referring to ink splotches that can be seen on very low light conditions.

Here are some examples of black crush.
The picture quality is bad but it's still possible to see the black crush.
The upper screen is Galaxy S II and the lower screen is Galaxy S III.
In this pic there is black crush on the roof on S III.
In this pic there is black crush on the audience on the left side.

I am indeed talking about the black crush. Not the ink marks.
The ink marks does not effect normal use of the phone, while the black crush issue effects my normal use of the phone very much. Will be contacting Expansys for an exchange, As this is a hardware issue, not software.
Mine suffers from this, a black patch that appears under grey colours and dark backgrounds it's in the middle of my screen...
Can other S3 users check theirs?
I don't see them unless it's a dark image.

May be is only that i don't have chance and the 2 first i get is like that.
In fact i don't see a band like other thread mention, it just like calibration thing.
But it is ok, if i haven't see my dad's one i would never notice
i don't think picture would reveal that small details, and will send his phone to the dad day.
Thx
Have you checked the Settings>display> Background Effects to verify both are on the same setting, and yours isn't on movie?
I read somewhere that some specific models have a yellowish colour problem on the screen..
This really shouldn't be normal, so my best answer is to send it in for repair
No yellowing on mine all looks good.
Are both phones using the same brightness settings?
On my phone, when the brightness is low, whites have a yellow cast, but on full brightness, they look very good.

BTW Engadget are simply repeating what people are saying here. They have no information of their own and it was people here mailing them that alerted them to the problem in the first place.

I've noticed on mine that the colour temperature gets warmer at lower brightnesses. Also dark grey takes on a brown cast. On full brightness it's perfect though. No left hand side yellow cast either that I can see.
There's 60 pages of discussion on this already and the points you're making have been made there a dozen times. Do we really need another 60 page thread on the exact same issue? In the other thread there's also a code to tell what version of screen you have. It would be interesting to see if the claimed "new batch" has a different version.

The main question arises....HAS THE BANDING issue been rectified...so i can FINALLY go head with my S2 purchase ? I'm hesitant to purchase such an expensive device..KNOWING it has a very obvious banding defect...and it seems samsung is unaware of its existence!
I had to ask this question, when I had my S8500 I always set the Brightness to 0, still the screen was enough bright with vivid colors and good contrast looked very sharp and there was no Bluish tint on the screen. But here with S-AMOLED+ if I set the Brightness to mid level or higher then the screen performs well and probably beat the former screen. But when it's set to Auto brightness it seems that the screen has a bluish effect and the whites are not perfectly white, the pictures are not that crisp like it was on the former one, in this case I'd easily say that former screen was better. Now is this a feature of S-AMOLED+ or problem? In low or 0 brightness it is the S-AMOLED which perform much better but not S-AMOLED+ !
Just hand-on and test SS Galaxy S3 final version. I got some pics for you.
I realize that Super Amoled HD on Galaxy S3 not much better than G Nexus or G Note. Something less over saturated colors, lower max bightness
Something made me impressed

Colors balance = problem of all Super Amoled untill now.
I doubt they'd release a phone with this much of a problem, probably just a defective unit as I've seen pictures of the GS3 with a white background and looked fine.
The Note is using Pentile as well and that looks fine.

Looks like its a problem with the white balance. I guess it can be easily fixed.
I got to play with a test unit yesterday and it didn't have this issue. Just a faulty unit.
Have you checked with different screen modes? There are 4 modes in GS3.
Maybe faulty like others mentioned or just a test unit made without any QC. Try comparing against another retail unit if you can find.

Its a defective unit for sure,
But i will tell you one thing...
Samsung QC is amongst the worst for their AMOLED screen process. The tolerances they have for screens are borderline "anything goes". The Note had screen issues with "pink" and so did the galaxy nexus. The SGS2 had green/yellow issues... Its a lottery;/
You may get a great one, or it may be rubbish,
It took me 6 SGS2's to get a nice even AMOLED screen, its the big downside to AMOLED;(
JD
I've used galaxy nexus for 2 months, before I gave it to my niece.
One thing I noticed with the galaxy nexus display is the color banding on grey background at low brightnesses. I have checked several galaxy nexus's at local samsung store and all of them had this issue. Surprisingly there is no similar issue on galaxy note.
I wonder if this problem exists on galaxy s3?
as op have mentioned it as a final unit lets hope we wont see many such defective screens. Spending some nice money and seeing a screen with some problem will be totally annoying and frustrating.
edit: in all the videos i have seen so far i can clearly spot a blue tint in the screen. hope supercurio starts to work on his voodoo color for sgs3 soon
@ intratech
did you note any blue tint with your s3?
This S3 is not faulty. My camera has a little problem on white balance. I will update more pics from new white balance setting.
At min brightness, S3 display white color more and more gray compare to S2, Note!

How's the screen clarity (sharpness) and colors compares to Galaxy Note? 'Cause I wasn't impressed with Note's display much. Despite the higher pixel density, S2 seems to have more details in pictures when I compares Note and S2 side by side. I wonder if the same thing happens to S3.
btw: You must be the guy on tinhte, haven't seen this topic up there . Is your S3 a test unit ?
I believe the difference between the note and s2 will be to with the physical screen size. Smaller screen will be better with less pixel density.

Please take a look at this site and their comparison images. I really think the OP has a faulty device.
This is very obvious the first few hours using the phone. Horrible sharpening halos around texts most noticeable on gray and non white backgrounds. It kills the black contrast of the text as well making it look gray and not to mention a pain to read. "with tuned sharpening, perceived sharpness can be nicely improved, sans visible artefacts"
"image processor from GS3 is from a newer generation than any existing devices, adding finer controls over useful parameters"

i agree. unless it is norm to put your phone very near your eyes, use a magnifying lens or microscope when using your phone daily.
I just viewed the linked pages on my gs3 and I'm having a very hard time seeing what you're talking about. How does the text look remotely grey? And what halos? Text is sharp and easy to read even when zoomed out a fair bit. As you'd expect since it's a 300+ ppi screen.
Are you talking about the anti-aliasing? You don't want the font to be anti-aliased or something? Even in your magnified photo, I can't see what the problem is?

It isn't the anti alisaing. I increased the contrast a little to show the problem more clearly.
Notice the halos around the characters? Still dont know what is wrong? In browser tap menu, brightness and colors, select level 1 power saving. This makes the display color a little bluish but also eliminates the sharpening and makes the text much better looking as it should. Compare it to default and see if you notice a difference.

Hi all SGSIII owner, have you try open your phone in the dark room? Look at the black colour such as in the Settings menu. The black not so black, like the Super AMOLED still lighting not like my previous SGS I. I think, this also drink battery juice faster.
BUMP!
Oh noo!! What is that? I open facebook in my dark bed room last night, when I open a photo from my friend posting, and waiting the photo loading, normally I saw black background and animated circle. But today I noticed total black dots in the background.
I managed plotted the dots in Photoshop, it look like this:

Another one issue is dimming.
I test the dimming function from keyboard key-in *#0*#, it not dim like first time I test after I bought the phone. I test the red, green and blue screen still ok, no issue.
What should I do?
I would drink some more juice -
the dots are ink marks that have been known to exist on samoled. According to supercurio, it's a software related problem and should be fixed by his app soon.

Oh I see thanks for the clarification
My Galaxy S II had this issue really really badly, to the point where the keyboard and statusbar were lightly burned into the display. Keyboard was temporary but statusbar burn was permanent.
Galaxy Nexus had it a little better, only one very obvious black spot on one of the on screen navigation buttons (which were always black making it more noticeable)
Galaxy S III hardly has it at all! Was planning on taking it back to the carrier (first phone I've got on contract in 12 months) if I noticed the issue badly, but since it's so little (only a few tiny dots) then I'm going to keep this one
I remember a discussion about this on the Galaxy nexus forum. It's just a limitation of the amoled he technology that they can't make the blacks as deep anymore. Personally I think the higher resolution is worth the sacrifice.

Let me tell you that you will also notice dark spots on the screen like the sgs2. very annoying.

look, the spot/ blotches issue is alright if its not too noticable....so thts fine....
but the blacks not being deep enuf, thts too bad considering s1 n s2 had nice deep blacks...
so basically the Supr amold " HD " screen exclusively has this inability to dispay true blacks ???
P.S: yeah the resolution is great, so much better thn the s2 !! love it !
I use this video to test the black on my note, play it in a totally black room, if you have true black you should not be able to see where the edge of the display and the bezel join.
My note`s black`s are pure black not gray.

but there is a warning for AMOLED devices:
***OLED screen owner please read***
(AMOLED screen of Samsung Galaxy S, Super AMOLED Plus screen of Samsung Galaxy S II, etc.)
- you should use only white, gray or black filter only.
- using color filter (not white, gray or black) for a long time may cause your screen more color tint. (it's about OLED screen property, not my fault)
- using any color filter other than black will cause black pixel being not 'true black' pixel anymore. (that means some power is required for black pixel)
- if the filter does not cover all of your screen, please uninstall this app because this may cause irregular color burn to your screen.

is this filter going to damage the amoled screen and how much it effects the battery?
I did not realize the S3 had a problem with black crush, I though it was just us unlucky G-Note owners
We have just been using the free "Screen Adjuster" app , but it kills the battery and makes blacks gray.
John
I definitely have a black crush issue with mine. I've tested 4 and they all have it but one dev has already found a fix for it. Just be patient till its released. Shouldn't be long now.
There's indeed a heavy black crush problem on this device (beside the yellow tint...). Hope some developer will fix this. Dark photos or videos don't show any details on this screen....

Supercurio by any chance? Good luck with that, after saying it was pretty much possible to fix the problem in the Galaxy Note after the ICS source was released, we did not hear much in the thread he started, then after a few idiots tried low tactics to get a responce from him, he got the hump and closed the thread.
This is such a stupid problem, and one that samsung customer services still refuse to acknowledge.
I was told to return my device and get a new one from a different batch, which I did, only to find the new one had the same issue. Now they want me go without my brand new device for 2 weeks while they fix it...wtf!!!
I was considering the s3, but after seeing this I am holding fire.

Yea, it is one of my few real niggles with this handset, but I have faith Supercurio will fix it. He mentioned that unlike the Note, the S3's fix was much easier and purely software based.
Also, I don't think changing S3's will solve the problem. It is my belief that ALL S3's suffer from this issue, it's just not all people realise or notice because it's not generally that obvious.
Now im using Filter Your Screen with (13 Alpha; 255 Red; 225 Green; 255 Blue)
question remains: is this filter going to damage the amoled screen and how much it effects the battery?
autostart on Filter Your Screen doesn't work

i tried to fix the black crush/color issues on my s3 with 'Super Manager 3.0'
(Screen Color Adjuster; Red +90, Green +65, Blue +90)
Then i found a similiar tool called 'Filter Your Screen'
(both available on Google play)
gives a warning for AMOLED devices:
does this only apply to the Filter Your Screen application
or does every Screen Adjuster is going to damage AMOLED screens?
(sorry for my english)

if you can't distinguish the first 8 frames, than you got the black crush problem.
i cant see the first 11 from my comp or my phone.
Can someone please explain what black crush is? Is it just too dark shadows?
Sent from my Galaxy SIII
look at the pictures in the thread.........
there is not gradual scaling from black to the rest of the color spectrum....if its not bright its Super Dark, no inbetween.
as in watching movies, a dark movie like the crow, or spawn. a lot of the scenes its just to dark to reallly even tell whats going on. but on my TV or even another phone, while its still dark you can SEE the difference in Blacks which defines the shapes of that scene.
or thats what i take from it anyway. i have not read anything just from my phone to other thread and pictures this is what i think it is.
ok, thanks. Now I can name this annoying "thing" when watching avi movies. I always blamed avi files for this. But as I can remember it's a common "feature"/bug in phones. I remember the same on Nokias too.

Make sure you're on maximum brightness in a somewhat dark room and play around with the mDNIe scenarios and modes.
'Dynamic' mode doesn't allow me to see the difference, but others do - but I don't like their coloring.

Very often it's the source file. Compression works by searching for blocks (or other geometrical shapes, e.g. triangles) of approximately the same color and storing them as having the same identic color. The "stronger" the video/image/audio compression, the more such artifacts you get. (Of course it's more complicated than that, since it has to consider 3 dimensions, them being X, Y and time T)
Sometimes players try to correct these issues with post-processing algorithms (which have their downside too), so it's more noticeable on some devices than others.
