Read BEFORE modding/flashing themes. - Continuum General

I have noticed several people asking what to do to get out of a boot loop after tweaking, flashing something in rom toolbox, or flashing a mod.
Flashing is fun, and addictive. But, if you are going to do it, BACK UP first. Every issue I have seen can easily be solved if the user has a nandroid made.
Nandroid's are very simple to make,.and restore. And they exist for a reason. Please use them.

Warning about ODIN Packages and Such

I have heard of a lot of reports from people that loose functionality of their radio and even more drastic problems after flashing some ODIN packages...
Now, i don't know which ODIN package is responsible, i know that bubby323 did make a faulty package, somewhere down the line..
ODIN is a last resort... Us here can get you up and working most of the time without even having to open up... ClockWorkRecovery is our friend
If you absolutely need to ODIN, What i suggest is going into the package with 7-zip, and checking whether or not there is a modem file... if there is, delete it... That's just my advise
Also, i have had a couple of reports of people getting fried from with CWM.... As of right now, i would tread lightly in there.... Backups and Restores should be fine, but don't do anything crazy in there If you do need to do anything does not require edify (3.0+) scripting, i suggest using the blue recovery...
This is all just my own personal opinions and such, do whatever you want
Thank you for the warning

How about trying a wipe first? Then if that doesn't work, then i can get you up and working through Clock Work... Get into the IRC #Samsung-Continuum so that i can help you better
Used the method we use on the Fascinate and got it rooted again. Did a wipe and she fired up. Odin clockwork, booted to recovery, applied update.zip, flashed superuser zip file. I think that's right. I was do frustrated I can't recall lol

I need a little "Flashing ROM's 101" please

I just rooted my EVO 4g with Gingerbread yesterday. There is so much information on this site that I am having trouble finding the information that I need . The thread that showed me how to root was incredible. Step by step instruction led me to success on the first try. You guys are awesome....thanks. I feel like I need that on Flashing ROM's to have an understanding of it.
Where can I find the list of available ROM's?
How do I go about actually flashing the ROM?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank
http://noobgui.de/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
Look in the dev section for all available roms. Look in the stickies tab for instructions on flash. Basically, boot into recovery, make a nandroid backup, wipe everything except your sd card and then flash away. Before doing anything though read read read and read some more.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Welcome aboard ... lots to learn, but not complicated. There is a list of all the roms in the development stickies, but reading through that forum is your friend. There are rooted stock sense roms (which I would try first), lots of themed variations, and aosp (cm, deck, salvage, omgb). Probably the most important thing to learn is how to wipe properly between flashing different roms, especially between sense and aosp. In recovery it's pretty self explanatory, just be sure to always backup ... including your wimax keys. In addition to wiping, I always flash Calkulin's "format all" zip before a new rom.
If you find yourself preferring aosp, be sure to keep a sense rooted backup, so that you'll be able to update your profile and prl. Be sure to read, read, search, and then ask your questions. Everything you need to know, has been asked and answered many times ... good luck.
Thanks guys. Already very helpful. Lots of info here. I'll update you on what happens
Like my man wmdunn said a few posts back.... Read, read, read and read some more.. The more informed you are the better your phone will run... Best of luck to you and FLASH ON!!!!!!!!!!!

With a good roll of TP (recovery) you will only need to wipe once.

I agree. Don't think the script wipe will get every thing. and why use a script when recovery can do it for you.
i had a major issue just today, and it all had to do with me not wiping....very itchy.....and it was causing 1/2 my phone not to work.no phone calls,no messaging,no market, couldnt download anything from a website,it was nuts for the last 36 hrs.but it all had to do with wiping,or not wiping.and i was taught that as a toddler
Some Pointers
First of all get rid of clockwork (the growing consensus is that it doesn't wipe well)
Use Amon_RA instead.
Second, make a nandroid of your WIMAX and stash that in a very safe spot just in case your wimax gets corrupted somewhere down the line.
Then as others have said
1. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong
2. Wipe (x3) (You can also use a script like superwipe or KingsMOD-FORMAT_ALL)
3. Flash ROM, kernel, mods, etc.
4. Enjoy!

Sure I can switch to Amon_RA. You say to make a nandroid of my WIMAX. Is this just a normal backup or is there a way to specify to just back up the WIMAX keys?

Stuck at samsung screen... Wtf

Is that the only way using odin.? If so can some please post the links i need. Im fairly new to this.. I used odin before but had it set up on another computer not this one....
I can boot into clockwork,,,, just when i reboot from there it gets stuck, why would this be happening. Maybe i didnt have the correct rom on it.?
You might have to start over but not with odin if you have a rom on your sdcard or if you download one to it. what rom are you on and kernel? And have you flashed something that migt have caused it?
Sent from my SPH-D700
Go to the Development section at the top in the stickies is a thread called How to fix a semi-bricked Epic. That has all the info and links you need.

This happened to me too, I was only able to get to the boot screen and it would freeze, and it would only let me get into clock work mod, make sure you have a rom in the root of your SD and flash the rom in clock work mod, the new rom should boot up.

if you have a fairly recent cmw backup and you are on cmw 3.1.0.1 (purple if I got the ver. # wrong) try advanced restore, and just restore the one at the top of the list. Worked for me when I flashed a bad kernel. Good luck!
It'd be nice if you were more specific on what you did before you screwed your phone up so we wouldn't have 10 plus people figuring out basic crap smh. -_-
Quit being such a noon. If you had the smarts to flash a rom....then figure it out. I've made the same mistakes. Better make sure the rom is actually for your phone......noob.
Make sure you have the right kernel for your rom. Most of the times when you get stuck at the samsung logo is because you don't have the right kernel.

Double check your ROM. Make sure that it includes a kernel, made for your phone, and isn't some highly experimental thing ROM that may or may not work.

My advice on how to prevent bricking

After screwing up my device by messing up the build.prop I would like to share that the best thing you could possibly to for your device would be to create a backup in recovery. Had I not done that my device would be bricked.
If all you did was mess with the build.prop, then it's only soft bricked. Wipe and Flash a new ROM.
Also maybe don't change/edit something unless you know the consequence/outcome maybe?

Normally I would agree without you but the build.prop I edited has a tag for no sd card, so it couldn't be mounted in recovery.
Making a backup is android modding 101...thanks for the revelations

Sorry for noobing aroung guys..just want to learn. How can you screw up your device by changing the DPI? You have to go far under 130 something (or is this kind of a BS information?^^), don´t you?

Yeah you would have to do something amazingly stupid in the build.prop to cause a soft brick and even then it's just boot looping and you reflash or restore a backup. Actually with build.prop you go advanced restore restore system done thats like a 2-3min job tops.
I was excited about this thread at first (the title)..... I think it should be closed Backing up is on every devs front page and almost an un-written part of the xda banner/root/mod community.

[NOTICE] Don't use ROM Manager! **New to the Transformer? READ**

Although a great app for supported phones, ROM manager has been an outright disaster for the Transformer Tf101 for recovery in particular.
After seeing tens of threads involving issues with flashing using ROM manager, and no warning thread, I decided to post this.
If you're rooting for the first time, or upgrading recovery Do Not Use ROM Manager. It simply does not work properly for the Tf101. This may change in the future if the dev adds official support, but for now, please avoid like the plague.
Install recovery with this instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180&highlight=recovery+installer
Gnufabio did a good job making a working recovery installer.
After you flash this, if you want to upgrade your CWM go to the development forum and flash the new CWM .zip using the version installed by recovery installer. Hope this saves some people some trouble, Thanks!
Don't use it for any device
Well, it is encouragement of laziness, but it actually does work well on supported devices, to be fair. Just not for the TF101, so stay away! D:

Terrible for TF101 absolutely amazing for someone as lazy as me for the Captivate
I havent used it in about two years. I only used it on my OG Droid since there werent many ROMs available for my Incredible and CWM isn't supported on the Rezound. Ijust get all my oms from the dev section.

Yep..again this was one of the orphan apps I had installed on my OG Evo years ago and forgot about. Used it once to install AmonRa recovery on the Evo and never used it again. One night at work away from my computer I decided I needed a new recovery on my Transformer and made the mistake of trying ROM Manager which equaled disaster. Long story short, took a while to get back to square one. If you have it on your transformer, uninstall! Good thread OP should be a stickie!
Please keep on first page/bump. Important to know! It's still causing issues!
Mod sticky?
I second a sticky. Would've saved me the bucks I spent on supporting the dev for not making it work properly
Thanks for this warning i almost tried it a few days ago ....hopefully they add support for the transformers family

Rom Manager
Rom Manager is not good. I had to reinstall the tablet of 0.
Man, I wished I had seen this before flashing a new rom, I got stuck all day long yesterday, that sucker wouldn't reboot, glad to know.
My only problem is that the ROM I'm running it came with it, I tried flashing another rom and it just wouldn't boot, it just stayed in the boot animation screen, had to go back.
I guess I'm gonna have to unroot?
this app didnt do anything after I clicked " Click to flash Recovery."
it just rebooted my tablet and thats all.. :[

This is a bit excessive. ROM Manager is excellent and convenient for many other devices. I've been using it for the almost 2 years I've had my Nexus S with no problems and literally 30+ ROMs to choose from. Plus, Koush is the man.
So I've removed ROM Manager but how do I remove the recovery?
