Hi,
this thread will serve as a useful aid to select a suitable NAND ROM for your HD2 and to also enable you to post questions on "which is the best ROM" and what not. I hope this thread will lead to a less cluttered forum where more often than not, there are questions asked on a suitable NAND Rom.
To begin with, here is a guide to select a suitable ROM:
Currently, there are 5 active categories of ROMs in no particular order:
1) Stock Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM based on a ported over AOSP code.
2) Stock Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM with Cyanogen Mod 9.0.
3) Stock Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread ROM with Cyanogen Mod 7.2.
4) MIUI ROM based on stock Android 2.3 with a custom UI and appearance.
5) HTC Sense 3.0 ROM with Android 2.3, ported over from other devices like the Evo 3D.
Descriptions and comparison of of ROMs:
For testing and as a daily ROM:
1) The latest stock ICS ROM is adapted to the HD2 from Google's AOSP source code and from that of the Galaxy Nexus. It is basically just Android 4.0 without any third party launcher and UI. The launcher is based on Cyanogen Mod's Trebuchet Launcher. Current builds are still in Beta or just came out of Beta stage. However, the ROMs are not buggy or slow to hamper everyday usage. Camera support is still slightly buggy and may result in force closures and VPN is still in the works. Moreover, graphics acceleration may not be as good and fast as 2.3 ROMs. Nevertheless, most features work and you can install your own third party apps like custom launchers and games. But, the developers are still working ever so hard to improve the ROMs so you cannot expect it to be the fastest and most stable just yet. It is recommended that you try this ROM to get a feel of ICS regardless of what ROM you are looking for.
Some ROM Examples:
A) Tytung's Stock ICS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354267
B) Michie's Stock ICS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417472
C) Smokin 901's MIUI ICS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439363
-----------------------------------------------------
For a long run everyday ROM with all the latest stuff:
2) This is the current development craze now, which is ICS with CM9. As with the first ROM, this one is also ported over from other devices. However, this ROM also includes Cyanogen Mod 9. Currently, most of the features of ICS are enabled, and all of Cyanogen Mod works. Like the former build, the VPN is still in the works and features like the camera and tethering may require some extra work and trickery to get them fully working. Since this will be the HD2's primary ROM in the very near future, updates are frequent and development is fast. Hence, if you are looking for the latest ROM with Cyanogen Mod and ready to join the development process, this is for you, as this will be definitely be the ROM to flash in future.
Some ROM Examples:
A) Tytung's CM9 ICS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860
B) Redjama's CM9 ICS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412168
C) Xylograph's CM9 ICS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441462
-----------------------------------------------------
The current staple ROM for HD2 users. Suitable for everyday use, and its very stable and fast:
3) This ROM has come a long way from early beta releases and although the ICS CM9 ROMs are set to precede this ROM, this ROM offers the most features in the most stable and fastest package. This is of course due to the developers' hard work and not because of the nature of Android 2.3. These builds have Cyanogen Mod 7 and come with custom launchers like GO Launcher and ADW. Tethering, VPN, etc...everything works and most of the time are available for both clk and Magldr. Moreover, with Cyanogen Mod, you can access advanced features like overclocking, to keep your HD2 competitive with current single core devices. There many varieties of this particular ROM, where the lock screen, font, theme, etc may differ. However, the more eye candy and apps a ROm offers, the heavier it may be. If you are looking for a primary everyday ROM that has speed, stability and features, this category is for you. However, since there are many ROMs to be tried, i am not stating examples.
-----------------------------------------------------
For a unique twist to stock 2.3 ROMs and as an no frills alternative to the earlier ROM:
4) If you are looking for a light stock gingerbread ROM, this ROM is the closest you will get to. MIUI Roms are custom designed and modified gingerbread ROMs with a totally different UI, launcher and overall appearance. Although, the features of Cyanogen Mod may be absent, this ROM is still one of the best Android ROMs available. This is also a ROM that you definitely have to try, which could also turn out as an everyday ROM for you.
Some ROM Examples:
A) Langthang's MIUI ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010498
B) jan-willem 3's MIUI ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050645
C)patensas's MIUI ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138088
----------------------------------------------------
The ROM with the most eye candy and user friendly UI:
5) Sense 3.0+ ROMs are basically ROMs that are ported over from other HTC devices like the Evo 3D and adapted to the HD2. It has Android 2.3 and the Sense interface, which is considered to be one of the best UIs ever. Like the MIUI ROM, everything is customized. However, this ROM also includes HTC's own messaging, email, calender, browsing, gallery, etc apps. So all in all, this brings you a better user friendly experience. It also looks the best among most Android ROMs, with its crisp 3D effects. Some ROMs that are ported over from Beats devices like the Sensation XL have the beats functionality as well. Nevertheless, all these perks make the ROM the heaviest among all Android ROMs, and this can hamper performance and boot time. However, if you fancy some overclocking and tweaking, this ROM can be a good choice as an everyday ROM, especially, if you like the Sense UI.
Some ROM Examples:
A) Daekin's Sense 3.5 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124757
B) Dansta34's Sense 3.5 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275119
C) NRGZ28's Sense 3.5 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733649
----------------------------------------------------
*Credits to all the wonderful and hardworking developers like dansta34 for making the HD2 very much alive today
With the above, i conclude my explanations and comparison of the ROMs.
I hope the information have been useful. Do post your questions regarding ROM choices in this thread. XDA members or myself will try to answer your questions quickly.
Disclaimer: I would like to strongly address that the ROMs i featured are not favored by me in any way or are not better in any way. They are just a few choices to get you started. Also, if you are in the HD2 Android business, i would advice you to try at least one ROM from each category and see which one you prefer. All information featured are based on my knowledge and experience. I do not assume responsibility for any harm done to your device when installing ROMs.
It would be better if you can contribute to this thread and provide information like benchmark figures, performance figures like available RAM and also personal experience faced with a ROM.Thank You
Cheers
fantastic read, truly a gem for us newbies. thank you very much. I like hyperdroid as far as i have used it, but admittedly i haven't even tried miui or sense ROMs yet.
if you are open to questions i have one.
Is there a ROM that is LOUDER then others?
is there a difference in volume in apps etc between ROMs?
thanks

actually, yes. You have to look at the changelogs and the description of the ROM you are interested. It will have information of any attempts to increase system volume. For example, here is one from the AmeriCanAndroid's changelog: "swapped in a different default acdb file for louder sound". It depends on what the developer does with the ROM. Most of the time, it is not really to increase the actual system volume by alot, but to to tweak it, such that its clearer. If you also talking about media volume for music, there even more differences. Some ROMs have a DSP manager, which is a primary equalizer to first tweak the media volume according to your preferences(so if you want a 'louder' sound, you can increase the treble). And since its the primary equalizer, you can use the equalizer in your custom music player like Poweramp to further improve the sound or in Poweramp's case, you can increase the gain of the sound, which is technically, increasing the volume. This feature is only available in Poweramp. And of course, Beats enabled Sense ROMs have a slightly louder output.

you should when you have some free time. They are all different ROMs, and the truth is, one ROM type can never have all the features of the other ROM type. Hyperdroid is a good ROM choice. But if you like the speed of Hyperdroid and want to try Sense ROMs,you will have to prepare yourself for some speed decrease...unless you are open to overclocking

i know about the sony xloud engine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1440998
if you need louder volume, you can flash it. But Dansta, doenst it seem a bit unjust to only flash a ROM just because it includes the sony xloud engine. Isnt it better if you can flash it with any ROM?. Im not saying your work and ROMs are bad. This thread was never meant to advertise ROMs and have a ROM smack down. By all means, i would really love to try your sense ROM mate. Im serious. If you are alright with it, please provide me with the link.thank you

i'd like to try it as well.
the quietest thing i run into is playing flash in skyfire.
will the sony thing increase it you think?
Yes it does.by how much I gotta test it and see.but since dansta himself says the increase is alot,we have to trust him

No mate my point was that there is roms louder than others and yea it would be good to be able to flash it with other roms but the problem is its a bit hard to release zips for guys to flash on other roms when all the roms have different setups for the folder structure!
I have a competely stock MIUI rom. It is fast and very stable.

If anyone is interested..
Ok,i have flashed Dansta's Blue Droid.First off, to answer the question regarding the sonyxloud engine, yes sound output has increased noticeably. Im not sure about exactly how much, but i would say hands down that it is at least 30%. Excellent job by Dansta and thanks to him. Moreover, this ROM is fast, the fastest Sense ROM i have ever tried. Of course, nobody can expect it to be faster than the lighter CM and MIUI builds, but the difference is not that much in terms of speed. But like i said in my first post, its personal preference. The Sense ROMs are the most user friendly and has the best eye candy and in this particular ROM, has the speed as well. For me, i am going to use this as an everyday ROM for now. But of course, we are all looking for the holy grail, which is a fast and stable ICS ROM. Lets all work together and help the devs by testing their ICS ROMs...And Dansta, ill be waiting for yours mate
did you try the regular version or the themed version?

the regular version.
And just a small note guys, lets minimize our discussion on a particular ROM or advertise a particular ROM. It has not happened till now,but i just wanted to remind you all so that we wont get into trouble with the moderators. This thread is open to all questions regarding the difference in ROMs,personal experiences using ROMs and of course, the ever inevitable "which is the best ROM..." question.
This might be a noob question but how do I change danstas new themed Rom from a bin file to a zip file so I can flash.
Thanks
Paul

please post individual questions pertaining to problems faced with a ROM at the ROM thread itself.
anyway, to answer your question, try renaming the file to .zip. I dont think it is supposed to be in a .bin format. Its probably a broken or corrupted file.
to be honest with you haldrics sense 3.0 sense Rom needs to be up there along with the others. his version 2.0 rom is both complete and stable and fast. is so underrated and deserves some attention.
my opinion, and ii have tried them all and just found this on to be the diamond in the ruff.
thanks for Al the hard work!

I've made a list of all JB,ICS and GB ROMS & KERNELS for the I9000 out here .
I know you may find a couple of threads like this. But the main difference is this thread contains all the three versions of android.
I will update the thread on a daily basis(almost daily) and i would like to add a few info about every rom .
It will help you to you choose an JB ,ICS or GB Rom or Kernel.
Since there are a lot a roms coming up daily based on CM9/AOKP and other people are just adding applications/MODS and re-ziping the rom which are of no use so i will add only those rom which have significant changes in it.
I will try to add ROMs from other sources also if they are worthy enough.

Aurora by far...
Hi, i tested a few Custom Roms for the U 8800. The best ones are Aurora and Elora (stable, long batterie life, lag free)
Aurora is a clean ICS build from sources and includes a very little amount of non-stock tweaks or anything else.
Elora is also a great choice but I hate this TouchWiz-ui.
So you just must to choose between Aurora that must be tweaked on your own and Elora that must also be tweaked or even re-tweaked on your own. Both of them are pretty stable (not the new v.5 Aurora — it's experimental ver.)
Sorry for my bad Eng.
ics i mean
aurora is one of the best rom for x5 so far.
Aurora ICS
I believe Aurora ICS to be the best, even the V5 version is pretty good. I've been testing ever since it was available for download & I have yet to find any real issues with it.
I have also tried Elora, MIUI, & they're also not too bad.
Might I suggest you consider Mokee OS. It's not ICS based from what I can tell but it is an excellent rom packed with features & very quick.
Just a thought.......
Aurora is very fast and smooth and the difference from MIUI is noticable.
But if you get used to MIUI interface you won't ever want another rom
Also, Aurora for those who like to use MMS and don't have data plan is a bad choice as you must have data connectes in order to send/receive MMS. In MIUI you don't.
Aurora photos and video are way worst than MIUI V4.
Overall 2 good rooms and if MIUI V4 was fast and smooth like Aurora would be a perfect rom!
Hi This is the first time i'm about to Flash a Rom to my Wildfire A3333
Can you suggest me a Rom based on this criteria s given below.
1) Stability and Most function should work
2) I like the stock Default appearance of android.
3) My main intention is just to upgrade to the latest Rom of Android (Bug free)
4) I prefer Jelly bean. But if there is no stable / Bug free Rom suggest me others but above gingerbread.
5) It should not lower the battery life.
If there is none available as i expected i will go ahead with cyanogenmod 7.2 stable which could upgrade my froyo to gingerbread
What your suggestion on that?
Thanks in advance.
If there

well, Jelly Bean is actually out of the question.. JB roms are not quite usable as daily driver.
That leaves us with ICS or GB.
ICS roms do come with a little bit more battery drain, and arent as fast as GB roms. but they are usable and quite stable. I would recommend AOKP light by Wasimk32 or MiniCM9 by Jordafaz.
now GB ROM are the best option to go for. Cynogen ROMs have a decent battery life, so it haven't been a issue for me, at least.
you could try CM7 from this site.

And there are modified versions of CM7, which are found in the Devolopment section.
hope this helps
Cheers...
