I have had my a500 since mid-2011 and within having it for 30 Minutes, I rooted it using ginger-break. Then I Used Acer Recovery Installer from the Market to Install Thor's CWM Recovery and Lightspeed rom. I updated to the Lightspeed ICS 4.4 I believe and now Im looking to upgrade to Flexreaper but I need ICS bootloader to do so. I have tried this Method with the tools such as APX tool and afterota, But since I never updated with a stock OTA update from acer the afterota does not work and I have gotten my cpuid and the SBK and both work. I have entered APX mode both manually and through APX tool. But at this point I continue to get errors like cannot locate APX device. I do know that I have the drivers downloaded from the acer website for the a500 and the APX device shows up as "Acer Piccaso Boot Recovery" but It will not show up with the "Acer Bootloader" on the tablet as the APX tool describes. I am currently downloading a stock rom and trying again just incase it was the ROM causing any issues. The Stock rom will be rooted and the recovery will be unlocked. Any ideas on whats happening? Did i mess up by not OTA updating? Is my device an older "version" and I can not properly enter the stock bootloader?
Hi cpgifford,
Did you get anywhere with your bootloader update? I am in a similar situation - rooted in GB - updated to ICS and APX mode does not seem to work.
Had the same problem.
The solution is:
When you are conected to your pc.
You must set your device in apx mode by hand.
Hold the little reset button with a needle or something and hold the power button for I think max 5sec.
If windows say new device found(sound) release the buttons.
If now displays black and the power button is on(led)
You are in apxmode.
Now you can flash the bootloader.
I did it with the blackthun3r tool
I hope that will help you,
when i had the problem i was scared because my devise won't boot any more.
After it all was fine.

if this /\ doesn't work then make sure you have no software that dictates your drivers like driver manager, also disable you antivirus and any cleaning software like advanced system car
Thanks for the update - I will work up the courage to try and flash the bootloader again. atm I am rocking ICS on the GB bootloader so I am not in too much of a rush however all the roms will eventually require the ICS bootloader for more advanced features.
helpw with unbricking a500
Hello all,
I tried to installed ICS based on this post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1622425.
here are the steps i did
1. downloaded all the items required that is APX flash tool and Thor 1.7.3 recovery, V8-UNL-ICS-HC-bootloader-MULTI-cwm.zip
2. got my cpuid and sbk
3. connected the iconia to computer with usb cable
4. started the apx flash tool.
5. entered my sbk by copy from text file and pasting in the dialog box of flash tool. and clicked the right arrow
6. selected the 'V8-UNL-ICS-HC-bootloader-MULTI-cwm.zip' file.
7. saw the acer logo and the a500 in apx mode
8. finally the flash tool said done and asked to boot the tablet.
9. after booting the tablet, i found that it only says 'Skrilax-CZ's bootloader V8 Bootin primary kernel image"
I am now completely lost as how I can move forward to install the Thor 1.7.3 revoery and the ICS ROM on here.
I am unable to make this tablet go into APX mode as suggested in the post by civato, both manually as well as using the blackthund3r a500 manager. A500 manager reports 'A500 detected in normal mode. debugging enabled.
I would appreciate any help on resolving this.
Thanks
sp
The bootloader is already on your tab. Turn the tab off, press and hold vol- and press the power button to turn it on and see, if it boots into recovery.

I'm a wee bit confused here.
Step 4 OK
Step 5 OK
Step 6 ??
The apxflash tool usually uses the a500.apex files UNLESS u choose use yr own files option
The zip u flashed is what u need to use Civ's manual nvFlash method
BUT apxFlash IS able to use the .bin and .img from the extracted files inside the zip and
I.m wondering if this has caused yr issue with entering apx mode again, I don't think it should have,
but there's been some weird things happening lately so its hard to say!!!!
But for future reference it may be good practice to use the apxFlash-in-app bundles for the initial flash OR
run the zip file via manual nvFlash just in case there is conflict.....
Once u have the patched BL on yr tab feel free to experiment to yr hearts desire, lol....
Just stick with the program for yr initial flash!!!
U now have fastboot available to u, any particular reason u r needing to use the automated tools?
Check yr drivers and reinstall if need be and reboot both devices....

Download a stock acer image and place it on a MicroSD under the name of update.zip then boot into recovery
But yes it is the wrong forum section - should be in Q&A doesn't bother me too much but it irritates devs because it's the development forum

I'm not sure what may have happened but the easiest way to fix your tab is to downgrade back to HC using an acer utility called an "EUU". you will need your cpuid for this so i hope you have saved it somewhere.
Look here for 'jazzyjames' tutorial How to rollback to HC - for instructions on how to do this and a link to timmydeans HC EUU - also take a look thru my cpuid post (link in sig) for loads of info and links and even how to get yr cpuid if u dont have it
thanks i tried it and follow instructions numerous times. evry time i get to the step where it says "entering acer download mode on my tablet" on the EUU program on my laptop it says it "failed" so i try and try again with the same results. im running out of options. i dont know what to do.
maybe give this a shot. I've never had to use it myself but it's probably worth a shot.
How to unbrick your tablet -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699277
oh heck that doesnt sound too good, i've not heard of the actual EUU "failing" guess thats the result of the usb issue you spoke of!
The "update.zip" method, you have 2 choices here See this thread for all the Official Acer Stock Roms - Ensure you download a "Full" rom and not just one of the update packages....instructions are in the first post...
You need to extract the update.zip and it may need to be decrypted as I said instructions for all this are in the OP!!
method2 - I've tried this once!! I got pretty frustrated real quick. Its a buggy chinese rom - took me a good hour to finally get into flashing a recovery, but it did work and plenty of others
have posted success with it... drkalo has a guide right here
Failing that m8 yr options are very, very few...
Try on a different computer so we can rule that out...or not!
or try to troubleshoot the usb issue....there are the only 2 ways via sdcard or pc/usb...
thinking about it now, in your post you said
"i cannot use usb because my computer wont read it not even after downloading drivers. anyone help me please?"
Not sure I follow, wouldnt have thought you'd get all that way to download mode without USB drivers to begin with.
You have debugging enabled in settings and you connect your cable to your pc but your tab does not show up on your PC in Device Manager???
Are you still on the stock bootloader??what about recovery??
this is what comes up

So this window that pops up saying 'failed' and with instructions to go into apx mode - did u do this? what happened after you did it?
I haven't seen this particular error but normally with the downgrade process you do not have yr tab connected UNTIL you see the "cant detect your iconia tab" window (with similar instructions to enter apx mode manually) did you see this window at all? you do not enter your cpuid until AFTER you have put yr tab in apx mode and connected to yr PC, then the green status bar shows and then you should see "Congratulations".
To check you are in apx mode your tab screen is black and the power light is ON.
Now before you connect yr tab to yr PC open up Device Manager (pc) so you can make sure the apx/usb driver loads when you connect the cable - it will show under "USB Controllers". Once you can confirm the drivers are installed then you should be all good
The drivers are a bit of a pain as there are different ones for each different 'mode' of your tab i.e
USB driver that allows you to see the contents of yr tab from yr PC
ADB driver that allows yr tab and pc to communicate by sending commands to yr tab via yr PC
APX Driver which you normally only see while running HC, but yr PC can sometimes report an error with the "apx device" if the drivers have not installed properly
Acer Boot/Recovery Driver which NEEDS to be installed for any type of nvflash or EUU flash to be successful
Fastboot Driver if you have flashed bootloader v3 up this driver will load when you enter "Fastboot"
This is why folks have trouble with drivers and why we keep telling them "reinstall the drivers!!!" The Acer drivers from acer support AND the Google adb drivers which you can get from the first post of my cpuid thread (link in sig) the zip also has the fastboot drivers and saves you having to download the full android sdk. Having device manager OPEN while attempting any type of flash definitely helps you see whats happening - or not - driver wise...
Hi all just got a Acer Iconia A500.
Got the updated for android 4.0.3 and installed fine.
Tryed to root but hasnt worked as i have a app called RootCheck installed and its saying Sorry, this device does not have proper root access.
I tryed power + sound down buttons for recovery mode and it starts but then pops up a andriod lying down with red triange.
Any help and links to file to download it fix tablet?
Would like to have android 4.0.3

Spent hours trying to work it out but no luck.
Thanks
I have installed the acer USB driver on pc and can see the tablet. internal memory and sd card.
Also can power on the tablet and get into android and use it.
Downloading Afterota at moment. I did find out the cpuid another way.and a side coverts it to SBK. so have both now.
This is how i found out cpuid
[HOWTO] Installing the unlocked bootloader and fixing broken recovery in leaked ICS - xda-developers
will get afterota and make sure is right and get the sbk to.
edit: ok downloaded and unziped Afterota and double clicked Afterota.exe and get error Uac must be disabled before using Afterota. Disable it manually and reboot your pc. program will exit.
???? any ideas?
Ok found out how to disable Uac and got Afterota to run and had to install the driver. and got the Afterota file saved to desktop with all the details of the tablet in it cpuid and SBK.
Whats the next step to do?
Sorry im a noob at this.
Ok I did everything that was in this video here and it all went fine.

ok lets try this out,
power off your tab, hold the volume down and power button, continue holding both buttons until the tab load the acer logo. are you coming into recovery?
if so use the volume to go down to advanced, then wipe dalvic cache, then click yes, it will take a second or two. when the wipe is complete try goin back in the options to find reboot system. with any luck it may fix you
you should see a screen saying optimizing apps .
hope it helps :highfive:
scratch that^^ read your post abit more in depth and im assuming you must have recovery and have wiped dalvik while doin the above,.
try this method to install the v7 or v8 bootloader its the ics version and unlocked/patched im using v7 right now after i got a bootloop and error saying bootloader unverified.

im not the best but from i know and understand =
apx mode is like the base programming/flashing state for making changes to your tabs guts/ loading software/os,.
usb debugging is for locating/extracting/uploading information to a system with already loaded software/os
you would need usb debugging to let the flashtool automatically set the tab into apxmode/ as doin it manually can be a hassle, but since you cannot turn usb debugging on to use that feature of the tool you should be ok to manually power into debugging and continue with the guide
tip: i learnt the 1-week till 3am way, you must have the usb plugged to enter apxmode.......or is it the other way around? or is it the charger? lol i cant remember srry
note: yes bruuu read, read, read, these steps are very dangerous to your tab if performed incorrectly. check everything, even look further down the threads to see what problems and solutions others have run into before flashing anything.
let us know how your doin and hopefully we're have it live n kicking again soon
ok im in APX mode. i start the manger and it asks for the SBK.
If i red this right the tool should get the sbk for me?
-3-When it askes for your SBK you need to type it in , the v0.4 APX flash tool will give your SBK automaticly !!
but the tool does not give me it?
-STEP 3=Now go to vache's site to get your SBK
you put your cpuid in and it gives you your sbk
these steps are further down the page (i know its set out weird)
How to get my CPUID ?
On HC Rom or HC bootloader (3.01) or you got a old nandroid backup do this to get your cpuid
-You can find your "cpuid" in one of your "nandroidbackups" that you made with cwm (look on your external SD/clockworkmod/backup=uid.txt ). It's the uid text you are looking for.
-Or when you connect your tablet and type in adb devices in cmd you get your cpuid
-Or usbdeview see more info here , thanks to dibb_nz
ON ICS ROM or ICS booloader (0.3.11 or 0.3.12) do this to get your cpuid:
Or you Install and launch Android terminal app on tablet. Run the following command: dmesg>/mnt/external_sd/dmesg.txt
Open up dmesg.txt (will be stored on your external SD) and look for androidboot.serialno. That is your CPUID.
Or try the following to get your cpuid (thanks to japinder)
-Reboot the Tab & just use the command 'dmesg | grep androidboot.serialno' (without quotes).
It displays the cpuid there & then. No extra lines, no need to save to file & then search. If the Tab hasn't been rebooted in a while, then the line containing 'androidboot.serialno' entry is lost/overwritten, so it won't even be there in the 'dmesg' output. Running the above command after a fresh reboot will always yield the result in an easier way.
so when you got your cpuid go to vache's site put it in and get your sbk, u can use the relative step in the thread to check your sbk is correct if you feel the need.
Enter it into the a500flash tool download a500
flashtool
click arrow
then select a ".a500apx" package u can get one here : skrillax BL's
Im using the v7
click arrow the tool should then do its thang! when it says pass/complete/get me a beer just restart your tab and it should be good to go.,
these are the steps i took on my tab when i had a unverified bootloader error and it fixed it all for me,... but i can not be taken responsible .....your tabs not working anyways so eh lol
Thanks for all your help.
Looks like its just a brick as i have no backups what so ever and it's never being rooted and it won't boot what so ever :crying:
Thanks mark
but it should work with the guide above?
after everything if you dont want it ill take it off your hands or a good price?
I really would like to get this up and running again but i just can't see how. Ive spent the last two days reading as many threads as i can and i can't see any way to fix this and it's doing my head in........
Keep reading on......

its always good to have cpuid, and i dont think you can go back to stock rom unless you follow the guide and get recovery
Hi experts
First of all i had an A500 and was able to do all fine but i ve sold it and now 1/2 year later i want to flash ICS Bootloader for better Roms to my girlfriends A500 because of many problems with sleep of death and thats annoying.
However, i used the blackthunder3r APX Flash Utility V0.4 and downloaded any bundle (i tried 4 differents) but when i switch the tablet in APX mode (doesnt makes a difference if manual or automatic.both put me in apx mode and the flash tool recognise it as APX device) then in the next step i get a pop up "Bootloader Check" and got asked if i have a Logo and "Entering Acer download mode" on my tablet but i have not.
This is my big problem and i m not able to solve it without your help. i m now trying it since about 3 hours now and knew that with the first tablet it took me only few minutes to have what i need.
drivers on pc seems to be all well but i cant start the flash process without getting into that Acer Download Mode.
right now there is HC 3.01 Bootloader on the tablet. i also tried to flash different Recoverys and flash an other Rom before doing the process but all the time i get stuck on the "bootloader check".
On the Tablet the power light is white and the screen is black (as it should be for APX mode) but i think the communication from the flash tool cant bring the tablet in download mode.
I m open for any tips because i dont have any clue what to do because i ve the feelin´ that i did everything.
try civatos manual nvFlash method...theres a guide in my sig
download the v8 package from civs OP
run v8.bat and cwm 1.7.3 option
do you see the system info window come up (on yr pc)
if you do follow steps and put yr tb in apx mode
does yr tab enter download mode now???
do any errors show??
Do not continue with the process if your tab wont enter download mode
otherwise use timmydeans HC 3.2.1 rom, pre-rooted and cwm preinstalled
then try the v8 bootloader from there OR OTA up to ICS
make sure u keep yr cpuid/sbk backed up somewhere
good luck
rgds dibb
Thanks for the reply but i solved it yesterday.
The problem was that i had flashed a Bootloader from HC to ICS on my old Tablet.
i dont know how or why but on my PC it showed me in blackthund3rs flash tool automatic the SBK Number of my tab ..... but it was the sbk of the old tab.
i figured it out by connecting my tab with afterota and recognised 2 different SBKs.
finally using the blackthund3rs flash tool, entering the correct SBK and then the tablet rebooted from APX Mode into Download Mode with Acer Logo.
For what every reason the flashtool found automatic a SBK of my old tablet and thought it is the SBK of the new one.
Now i m running ICS and all is fine... dont know why i didnt doule checked the SBK. i trusted the tool to much.
Thread can be close
So a couple of weeks ago I accidentally let my battery die, which I try not to do because I have trouble getting it to turn back on again and this time it did just that: my tablet wouldn't power on at all. I searched up my symptoms: Power light comes on, Doesn't vibrate, Black screen, and everything pointed to either my motherboard went kaput or APX Mode. A new motherboard for my model is upwards of 50$, so I tried looking into what APX Mode meant. I'm decent with computers but this was beyond me, or more so that I have no idea where to find the files/programs to flash(?) it. Anyway digging through the threads here I looked at a recent one here and on a whim I tried the suggestion, even though it was to another problem they were having with APX Mode. And it worked!
My tablet turned on fine, but I am skeptical of how long that will last. So, some questions that I hope someone can help me with are, what is a "fastboot", and does it hurt the system in any way if used repeatedly? Is there another way (an app or something) that will be able to tell me my UID and SBK other than through a Linux computer? Also, bootloading, does that root the device in any way? When I was looking around it didn't sound like it did, but then sometimes it did and now I'm just confused.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for looking!
All files needed for unlocking the bootloader, rooting and unbricking can be found in the root guide in my sig. Along with methods of retrieving the cpuid and also a guide to flash the bootloader using the apxflash tool - I try and keep download links up2date, let me know if you have any probs.
If your tab does have a faulty emmc and I'm not saying it does...it will eventually fail, being stuck at the Acer screen seems to be the most common symptom, followed by the inability to flash.
Fastboot gives the ability to perform wipes and flash via the windows command prompt...
Root is gained (on ics) with icsRoot tool...once done you can then nvflash the unlocked bootloader.

Ah, thank you! I will definitely go through those. I checked the cpuid one last night in case it decided to die while I was sleeping, so that's good. Although my sister's tablet doesn't have that file on hers at all? And its the same model ... anyway.
emmc? Forgive me, I am not well versed in these abbreviations. It hasn't gotten stuck at the Acer screen yet since I've had it, but ... its always a possibility.
Hmm, I didn't have it connected to the computer when I tried fasbooting it — is it considered something else when you power the tablet on holding the Power Button + the Volume Up button? Maybe it wasn't in APX Mode at all then, but I don't know if that makes it better or worse. No other way would make it turn on, it was just a dead black screen no matter what I did, and then I tried that and the Acer logo popped up.
And, sorry just to be clear, there's no way to unbrick a tablet without rooting it?
Thanks so much
emmc = memory chip!
Per+vol down = custom recovery
Pwr+vol UP = fastboot
Drivers - From Acer and adb_fastboot drivers from android sdk (or the mini.zip in the guide)
Cpuid/sbk imperative to run most of the unbricking files which are based on nvflash.
Root - unavailable on hc 3.2, not needed to unbrick but usb debugging needs to be enabled in settings. For ics use icsRoot,
skrilax_cz unblocked bootloader - needed to install custom roms. Needs cpuid. Will also flash cwm recovery. Gives fastboot ability. So you can flash a new recovery thru Windows command prompt i.e. enter fastboot
Open command prompt
Type in: fastboot flash recovery "name_of_your_recovery'.img
EUU - Acer upgrade tool which gets you back to stock. PC based, needs cpuid and also used to unbrick.
update.zip - Acer stock updates, some are full os dates some are just incremental updates. Used also to help with softbrick like getting stuck on the Acer screen. Cpuid not required, flashed via ext sd card.
Think that's it in a nutshell...as stated get your cpuid NOW
Which build of Android is the tab running??
