So I know this is a major noob question, but if I want to flash a ROM using hashcode's 3.0 kernel, do I have to download the kernel first and flash it using TWRP in the same way I'd flash a ROM? Also, if I want to update TWRP and FireFireFire, would I flash those the same way? Thanks for any help.
Hash usually publishes both ROM and kernel at the same time. In this case you need to install ROM only. If he only updates the kernel only, then you need to flash the kernel following his update instruction.
As far as the TWRP recovery, just follow the instruction issued with the update for the recovery to flash a new version.
The same story for boot loader FFF.

you can update your bootloader and fff using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500935 or just fff this way http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632375

Hi all,
There is just to much info here and I cant find what I'm looking to do... tried other sites also but not the same.
I have in the UK a stock Wifi GED Jelly Bean Xoom.
I would like to flash a custom ROM.
Am I correct in thinking I need to:-
Root - still not found a guide that does JB
Install Clockwork Mod Recovery
Boot into recovery mode and select wipe... install from .zip within CMR?
Pointers would be greatly appreciated...
I think unlocking and rooting would be the same regardless of the OS.
I also suggest you flash TWRP instead of CWM, both are fine either way.
Once you boot into recovery wipe cashe, dalvik cache, and data (factory restore).
Then flash ROM and GAPPS (for the specific ROM).
Just make sure the ROM you flash is designed for your device (there are many flavors of XOOM, each a little different from the others).

Irrelevant if you plan on using a custom rom.
1. unlock bootloader via fastboot - fastboot oem unlock
2. flash custom recovery via fastboot - fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3. flash custom rom via the custom recovery you just flashed
Plenty of guides that go over this much.

Any pointers on what would cover a stock JB Wifi? - its all pretty bewildering if I'm honest.. I have no issues flashing my HD2 phone with Droid Clockwork Mod --> instal from zip... but the xoom doesnt appear to be that straightforward
Look at this guide that I came across. xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-development/15179-how-rookie-rooting-flashing-unrooting-under-one-roof.
Sorry it would not me post the link to the guide.
Just a thought..... Xooms sold in the UK do not have a JB update yet, so I would assume the Xoom may already have had its bootlaoder unlocked to convert it to a GED device and as part of that a custom revoery (like ClockworkMod) installed.
Is it worth trying to reboot into recovery to find out if you already have a Custom Recovery installed ? Might simplify the process somewhat......
I must admit, I've no idea what the stock recovery would look like though seeing as I GEDified my Xoom within a week of getting it
Hi
First of all, this is don't habitual for me since I used to read related post (and more if an update has just arrived) but I just could not find an specific instructions (sorry if I am being too demanding) to go from custom 4.2.1(PA) to stock and finish with rooted 4.2.2, there are a lot of several procedures or recommendations to perform the update :S
well this is what I have planed
- return to stock 4.2.1 (using nexus toolkit)
- download and flash manually the update to 4.2.2 (first try to use the ota update option)
- get root... how??? lol
- restore my apps/data
Since I will return to stock I think I will lose root, that is ok but only if i can root the nexus again, Will I be able to get root on 4.2.2? or I have to root in 4.2.1 and keep it (in some way) at the time I update to 4.2.2
Srryforbad/basicenglish:silly:
Rooting every nexus is the same. Flash/boot a custom recovery and flash supersu.zip. it doesn't matter what OS version its on.

ok, I think I have missing that simple thing...
I don't have to worry about get the bootloader locked again therefore I just have to flash a recovery and SU when I have my N7 on 4.2.2, but...flash from... bootloader I guess, well, I will check that.
Thanks!
Learn the manual way of doing it and don't rely on toolkits. There are many tutorials walking you through the entire process

To elaborate on Pirateghost's points...
After flashing the 4.2.2 update... you will lose your recovery (CWM or TWRP)... but getting your recovery back is also part of how you (re)gain root.
As I have posted elsewhere...
Rooting is really simple.
(You will need an unlocked bootloader for this).
Get a custom recovery .img for your device...
Either CWM - http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
...or TWRP - http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/103,
...it matters little which...
-----------
fastboot flash it.
-----------
Get Chainfires SU .zip package here http://download.chainfire.eu/310/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.04.zip
Flash it using the custom recovery you've just fastboot flashed..
Reboot... and you're rooted.
-----------
...and that's it basically... you have root, a custom recovery from which you can flash ROMs, perform nandroid backups, etc.
But fastboot is the key... learn how to use it, and you will never need to be reliant on anybodies toolkit.
Rgrds,
Ged.
currently I'm on 2.6.0.0 and I was thinking of the benefits to upgrading to the latest version, plus also the risks involved. Whats the best way to upgrade TWRP ?
Use goomanager. It's by far the easiest since it's mostly automated.

I just downloaded the latest version of TWRP, booted into the bootloader and loaded the image by
Code:
fastboot flash recovery {insert name of image file here}
. Easy peasy,,,
oops, it's a bit late. I found the goomanager and installed it, trouble is I installed the OTA update which has set my device unrooted. There is no TWRP any more, not sure how to get into recovery mode as a dead android with a red triangle appears. I'm unlocked, but just cant get into recovery.
I took a full TWRP backup before I started, any tips ?

Just use ADB to Fastboot flash recovery. Either Fastboot flash your root file or copy it to your device. If you copy it to your device, then boot to recovery and flash your Superuser or SuperSU .zip. You don't want to restore your backup though if your on the latest OTA now and your backup is the previous OTA.
SwiftKey'ed from my White Note 2 via XDA Premium HD
Wug works well.. Simple too.

theres TWRP flashable zips in the TWRP thread, this is the easiest if you alrady got TWRP
you can use wug to install it for the first time then use goomanager to update it later or TWRP manager to dl manually.
As far as I know and what i have research, the only rom recovery that can be flash to my LG G2 is TWRP and would have to use Loki to bypass the bootloader. Please correct me if I'm wrong in the information. I have the ATT version, software version is D80010o, and on 4.2.2 Android Version Stock Rom of cause.
Questions:
- Does the G2 have to have an unlocked bootloader to flash anything even if it is rooted?
- Is TWRP the only recovery that can be flashed to the G2? If so what is the "manger" for it similar to Rom manager with CWM.
- Is there any other way to backup your current rom without using any recovery, this is my main goal for the moment?
Note: I have check if it is compatible with CWM base on the website yet when i flash CWM with Rom Manager( not the touch support version) and try to reboot the Red Triangle pops up. I have tried with Flashify and download the recovery img to the sd and it comes up with secure booting error ( I'm not sure if this is because i flashed both CWM and CWM with touch at the same time with Flashify wasn't sure if i needed to flash both for touch to work or just CWM Touch)
Please inform me with the correct produces to follow or link me to a solution. Side note this is my first time with an Android device and my first Smartphone so I'm kinda new to this rooting roms, kernal, thing. Thank you in advance to anyone that can help. Feel free to message me through XDA. Thanks.

loki is a bypass for the bootloader so we can install custom roms, recoveries, kernels
Hi all! I am sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find a definitive answer in here.
I bought OnePlus 8 Pro from the official website in April and I feel it's time to flash a custom kernel. I've been modding my phones since 2011 using Xperia Neo back then.
1. If I unlock my bootloader will I still be able to receive official updates?
2. How exactly do you flash a custom kernel? At the moment I have no intentions on rooting the phone.
3. Is the procedure for flashing a custom ROM the same as the kernel?
4. Does unlocking my bootloader delete everything from the phone?
A lot has changed since Android 8 and 9 so I feel like a complete noob.
Thank you for the help in advance!
1. Yes as long as your boot partition is stock/aka not rooted or using custom kernel, you can take regular otas.
2. If rooted you can use ex kernel manager... If not you'd boot to bootloader and use fastboot commands to modify the boot image.. Note after this you wouldn't be able to take otas until you flash back stock boot img.
3. Yes very similar, you'd flash different partitions in bootloader using fastboot commands.
4. Yes, same as relocking.
You should be able to install OTA regardless of what kernel you're using.
I recommend Franco Kernel Manager for flashing kernels.
There should be instructions on how to install ROMs with fastboot. You use fastboot and fastbootd (new fastboot for system) depending on what partition you flash.

I reckon I need to root to use Franco kernel manager and I shoul be able to flash any kernel just using fastboot?
Regarding the OTA, I read that you need to be on stock kernel to be able to install it so I guess I will wait for the December update and then go through the whole process of bootloader unlock etc.

Yes you need root in order to flash a kernel zip using kernel manager. Flashing a kernel through fastboot requires just the boot image, which i don't think any kernel provides standalone.
And no, you don't need to be have stock kernel to flash an OTA. I have no idea why someone would write that.

I haven't tried a lot of kernels but in my experience coming from other phones like pixels.... When boot.img gets modified it will fail ota updates...I tried it with this phone with a rooted boot.img and it failed so I assumed a kernel modified boot.img would be the same. Much apologies if I'm incorrect... But that's my reasoning for writing my post.
Updating isn't an issue.
My guide for doing just that amongst other things.

Hi all, Have seen a lot of requests for patched boot images on these threads so thought i'd share a guide on how to get it yourself as well as all the files required, plus the patched boot.img if you just want to go ahead and boot/flash it...

Personal I use ex kernel manager. Hasn't failed me yet.
Auth apps have worked for me, as does gpay so you should be ok.
Titanium / swift might do it but the OS won't be the same so the apps could notice that.
Just set them back up, the more you do it the easier it is.
Probably best to deactivate first so it's easier to enrol on your new OS
