Xperia Arc 4.0.4 Stock - Xperia Arc General

I'm Working on porting ICS from the arc to the play, I was wondering if a very kind arc user could upload a cwm or nandroid backup for me.
Many thanks if someone could do it (you'd be credited)

Unfortunately, I don't have an unlocked bootloader on this arc so I can't install recovery without rooting but I've sent you a PM with my rooted LT15a, v4.0.4, 4.1.B.0.431 Nandroid Backup.

What's the difference between a and i?

It is just a matter of frequencies. The LT15a made to be used in North and South America, and the LT15i in Europe.

There isn't a firmware version that would work in all countries? I.e the GSM?
R800i Is my xperia Play in australia, does that mean the R800a is the NA version.

All firmwares work in all countries.
After 2.x, all firmwares contain both software radios. It's what allows users to flash firmwares that haven't been released in their region. Or if they want customizations from another region. e.g. an HK person living in North America can flash an HK "i" firmware onto an "a" phone in North America and still have full 3G support in an "a" zone.
Hardware radios (i versus a) are fixed and cannot be changed.
Are you sure you should be porting firmwares if you don't know something as basic as that.
From my APN Pastebin:
Code:
NOTE:
Flashing an "i" firmware onto an "a" phone will NOT give you "i" (e.g. UK, HK, T-Mobile USA) 3G
support on your "a" phone.
Vice versa: Flashing an "a" firmware onto your "i" phone will NOT give you "a" 3G support (e.g. AT&T USA, Rogers Canada) on your "i" phone.
All firmwares after v2.x contain BOTH SOFTWARE portions for "a" and "i" radios. Therefore, you can flash ANY v2.x firmware onto ANY phone and have 3G support in your zone. This is useful if you want HK customizations on a North American phone or UK customizations on an HK phone.
However, the HARDWARE radios are FIXED. You cannot add 3G support for another zone.
Check beneath your battery for your phone's version ("a" or "i"), if you don't know.
"a" phone:
"i" firmware in an "i" zone = No 3G.
"i" firmware in an "a" zone = 3G.
"a" firmware in an "i" zone = No 3G.
"a" firmware in an "a" zone = 3G.
"i" phone:
"i" firmware in an "i" zone = 3G.
"i" firmware in an "a" zone = No 3G.
"a" firmware in an "i" zone = 3G.
"a" firmware in an "a" zone = No 3G.

Unlocked I9000 850/2100 MHz

There are a couple of threads around at the moment that are eluding to a 850 MHz version of the Galaxy S. I'm currently using an original UK I9000 (900/2100 MHz) and am sick of the terrible service of 900 MHz carriers in Australia.
As such, when people start getting their hands on 850 MHz unlocked Galaxy S would they mind listing the following information.
- Reseller / Carrier (if they sell outright)
- Reseller / Carrier Shipping Destinations
- Price
- Firmware Version
- Locked / Unlocked
Semi-related, I contacted HTC Australia a couple of times when I was considering purchasing the Desire. HTC confirmed with me that all versions of the Desire are absolutely identical in terms of hardware. This confirmed the research I had performed that the HTC's/Nexus' radio chip has the ability to support both 850/900 MHz (not necessarily simultaneously). So it is definitely the case that flashing firmware onto your phone can convert a 900 MHz phone to a 850 MHz phone or vice versa. However, the firmware that needs to be flashed probably isn't directly flashable using standard android tools. You probably require physical access to the radio frequency chip to flash firmware onto the chip as well as corresponding firmware onto the phone. Where I'm going with all this is...
If we have any electronically inclined people on these forums, on top of the above information I would love to know if someone is willing to investigate whether it is possible to dump radio chip firmware from their 850 MHz device.
EDIT: I'll include the list of phones below.

Thanks. I did notice that thread however, it's actually why I started this one. I just figured it would be a good idea to have a central place for people to upload information. So we can compare between resellers and learn a bit about the devices from each reseller once people get them in their hands.
I'm looking forward to see results from the New Zealand model, and Bell.
I'll try to pick up one tomorrow from Bell and see if it works, and if we can unlock it.
@All Gamer: Are you going to have the phone unlocked? Even though you still in the Bell network.
I be checking in everyday for this.
I also noticed that the model number for this unit is actually i9000. Is the CA and NZ model names are i9000 with quad band? or different like the us version of i897 and t959. Just wondering if they were different then the Euro Version.

inside the phone, after you take out the battery it's a GT-i9000M
firmware was something J?5 (forgot the middle letter)
the Euro/Asia version is GT-i9000
they actually finally revealed the updated page, 2 weeks ago it didn't have the Tech Spec yet

that is the Asia version of the GT-i9000 (same as Euro) but!!! it has both the 850+900+1900 band, but missing the 2100 band (which i don't really care as in America we don't have much use for the 2100, 90% of the network in USA/Canada is 850+1900)

No idea about the CA model, but the NZ model is the same as the european just with the different radio bands but no ideas about when it will be released, I emailed samsung NZ asking about it but no response yet. All phones sold in NZ are unlocked even apples's iphone 4 which has an exclusive contract with vodafone here is sold unlocked.
interestingly enough the Asia version also has different radio than the NZ version, the NZ has 2100 band, but the Asia one doesn't in its place it keeps most of the lower bands
according to Wikipedia, seems like the only country that uses 2100 is Brazil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_frequency_bands
why would cell phones sold in Europe/NZ ship with that band?
dunno...
anyways @ AllGamer, where are you in canada?
i get decent 3g coverage in the GTA...unless i'm in a basement and some houses...
also how's your gps?
works fine for me everywhere i've tested... haven't had any issues with locking
longest i've taken i think is like 30 seconds for a lock outdoors
and that was from a cold start after i flashed a new rom

no problem as well, that's why i don't know why so many people are complaining about the GPS and "lag"
coming from Windows Mobile, this "lag" is nothing, GPS takes average 5~15 sec to pick up depending on weather, my old phone it takes 5 min to 1 hour to pick up
and waiting for the Windows software to load was always like an eternity, that's why iphone got so famous, because windows mobiles devices have always been slow, and i'm sure it will continue to be slow even with the same CPU, cuz my old phone was a 625Mhz CPU, and still didn't cut it, i OCed it to 650Mhz and it was not much better, but definitely noticeable... anyways.... the SGS i9000 is a dream to use.
GTA as well, 3G is mostly fine in most areas, but sometimes when you are down in the subway (the stations with open tunnels) it can't pick up 3G only G or Edge, and some parking lots
it is more a concern about traveling as, drive around Ontario/Quebec quite a bit, having the 850 band is a safety & bonus.
so if the new one from Bell works, i'll sell the UK i9000 version (sill in stock firmware but rooted)
thanks for the info man.
is that a demo one, or you purchased it already?
the past 2 days i've been trying to buy one to study it in detail, with no luck, as the sales guys didn't want to sell me their "demo" units

[Q] Telstra Galaxy Tab

Hey guys
I have one of the Telstra Galaxy Tabs, and basically want to work a few things out with it.
First off I gather, with mention of all the carrier-specific or gsm/CDMA Specific ROMs, this has something to do with a radio or some such being included?
The Telstra "Next G" Network, which the Tab is used on, is basically 3g on 850mhz. Which of the types would this come under?
I have "Some" experience with flashing/ROMs/etc, namely on my Desire, so I am no expert by any means (Defo wanting to learn, and have learnt a lot from here so far ) but I do have a small amount of experience.
Thanks guys.
So, the community round here will answer questions for people that have obviously not bothered to search and ask the same stupid crap over and over and over, yet someone who has done a LOT of research, and is legitimately confused over a terminology issue (because technically it ISNT GSM or CDMA if you learn how the networks actually work) and just wants a simple answer to a simple question, just gets totally ignored?
Great to see guys, Great to see.

GSM radio hardware is largely irrelevant, the hardware does the heavy lifting, the firmware doesn't care that it is, as long as it supports the right protocols.
Telstra uses a GSM/HSDPA/WCDMA network. In most cases, this is the case if your device has a SIM card.
The Tab sold here is essentially the standard UK version. If Telstra has an 850/2100Mhz HSDPA version then that could potentially be different. If you can root it using SuperOneClick, then run a complete firmware backup and try updating with another GSM firmware (e.g. RotoHammers JME) and see how you go. Before doing so, check that the device is unlocked, check if it can be rooted, determine the existing firmware/modem versions and the CSC version. It may be a custom firmware, it may not.
Your "LOT of research" was obviously fairly deficient if it hadn't ruled out Telstra using a CDMA network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstra

Well, The network you are referencing is actually the "Telstra 3g" Network used only in the capital cities around here. The network my Tab is used on/made for is the "Next G" Network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G is the specific network. As you can see, it is technically not GSM at all, it is UMTS, and actually replaced our old CDMA network. So, this is where my confusion was coming in. But, if I have this correct, it is used as a basic term, meaning GSM = Sim Card and CDMA = No Sim Card (like our old CDMA network, phone itself is coded to the number/network type thing, which to be honest I didn't realise still even existed) yeah?
Cheers for clearing that up
As for the freqs, if I do a *#2263# the 3 WCDMA bands that are starred are 850mhz 1900mhz and 2100mhz. The GSM Fallback shows GSM 850 GSM 900 DCS 1800 PCS 1900 all starred. (Yes I did realise this before, I explained why I was confused with the terms hehe) The main band I have to worry about really is 850mhz though, on the WCDMA side, as you would have seen from the link.
Well, the device can be rooted with Z4Root at least, that is what I have used to root the device. This is exactly what I intend to try, once I am sure I understand everything. Does not hurt to read and re-read until one is definately comfortable with the steps, and I like to understand what every part is that I am doing.

Just to be 100% sure, that is the one here? And you are on the Next G Network? (I assume so with the 850mhz band etc, I thought this would work, but doesn't hurt to be sure I am looking at the right one you are talking about hehe.)
I can confirm the original firmware is JJ3, with phone calling capabilities etc.
Of course, backups always come first, always.
Thank you heaps for the info.
Also, if there is any part of this device's firmware etc that would be helpful in any way to the devs, I would be happy to extract anything needed from a rotobackup or whatever. I won't be flashing it straight away, and definately not before a full backup anyway.
(edit:spelling)

[Q] How come the R800i 3g wont work on at&t network?

Sorry guys I'm a complete noob to these frequencies. I've read through the forums and it seems that the general idea is the R800i wont receive 3G. My question is why won't it work? I'm not familiar with att frequencies so an explanation on the frequencies would be hugely appreciated. Sorry for not knowing much guys. I hope your expertise will help with my simple question.

You have to flash R800a firmware, AFAIK AT&T uses frequencies defined in R800a baseband.
R800i supports UMTS (3g) on 900MHz and 2100MHz. R800a supports it on 850, 1900 and 2100.
AT&T use 850MHz so that's why your R800i won't work with 3g. It'll still work with voice and probably work with GPRS.
It's hardware, not firmware, as far as I know. If not I could have bought an R800i for $150 less and just flashed a generic R800a firmware.

no...and pls try not to give the advice from ur guessing (no offense btw)...it could easily confuse ppl who doesnt know abt radio chipset and may lead to wrong purchasing decision...a lot of ebay sellers still misquote the spec and sell R800i saying it would work on 800/850/1900/2100 3G -_-''
basically, the R800i has got a chipset that would work with HSPA on 900/2100 only while the R800a/at got the one for 800/850/1900/2100. it's purely hardware stuff...i'm using mine (R800a) flashed with R800i UK generic firmware...it's showing a R800i under 'About' but it works on 3G 850 MHz and never work on 3G 900 MHz...this's not abt software level at all
i'm pretty new to this android scene so i'm not 100% sure abt the software architecture thingy (i.e. kernel, OS, baseband and stuff) but radio connectivity is largely chipset-dependent with different design on antennae as well

Flash with what? r800i firmware with r800i firmware? (no rogers firmware to flash) It's all hardware based. You will not get it working on at&t srry bud.
Thank you for your answer. I was about to pull the trigger on buying the r800i but now I'm going to wait till the r800a is more readily available.
So I (accidentally) flashed my Rogers R800a with a UK R800i firmware (to get root) and it's still connecting to Telstra's 850MHz network. So, as expected, you cannot change the phones radio with software.
just bought a R800a from ebay. Thank you guys for directing me in the right place.

This answer is in part correct, as baseband feature is related to hardware, and firmware is software. It doesn´t matter if you change the firmware, the hardware won´t change.
The solution is to buy a R800a if you are in America.

Defy MB525 has all frequencies?

I did a search, but nothing found for my question. Does the MB525 support all frequencies? I have one I bought new when they came out for T-Mobile US, and I know it needs the 1700 frequency for 3/4G speeds, but I'm looking to get another one, but all the ones I see don't have that frequency listed. My question is do all MB525s support all frequencies? I'm rooted on my original one, and I've used the baseband switcher from CM7, and I see I can select all different "world" frequencies, so If I buy one that is say 900/2100 on the box, can I root, and use the baseband switcher to choose 1700 for T-Mobile? Or would I be stuck on 2G forever with it?
Yeah it should work, although I'm not 100% sure

It works out of the box.
I picked a new one up from Ebay. It said it was unlocked, and supported all frequencies. I put my sim card in, set T-Mo APN, and I got 3G out of the box. No need for the baseband switcher. I'm happy now. I got me a brand new Defy. I didn't even know they are still being made (Or at least as recent as mine). I thought since it's over a two year old phone, and there is already the Defy+ and Defy Mini, that the good old original Defy was done production. Mine was just made 3/2012 by the manufacturing date on it. Great news for anyone looking to keep this phone going in case yours is starting to breakdown. There are a lot of new ones out there. It's all black and unbranded, and comes with 2.2.2. I'll be keeping my original one just in case, and I may pick some more up at the price I paid. US $168.00 shipped.
Yes, with the baseband switcher you can select every frequency.
So its Quadband
Wish they would have had that for old Nokia symbian phones
My carrier uses 900/1800 baseband. I tickled through all regions and carriers and didn't find 900/1800. The closest option is 900/2100. How to add 900/1800 baseband to baseband selector?
Then perhaps you can use either 3g or 2g, not both depending on which baseband you select

I'm not sure what version of the Baseband Switcher you are using, but the one I have doesn't show that frequency at all, and I can't find it on any other ones. Here is the link to the one I have. Maybe you can contact the Dev to see if 900/1800 can be added. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745
EDIT - Just to be clear the OP in that thread does say new ones can be added. This is from the thread: "If anybody needs other basebands included, copy the folder /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default from your Defy, zip it, post a zip here and write down out of wich rom it is and for which country it is.
If anybody wants to add new Languages, PM me the translationlist + what Language it is."
Good luck.

I use only 2g network. My phone 3g baseband is not supported by my carrier. According to my carrier website it uses GSM800/1900 baseband.

[Q] Buying a Samsung Galaxy S 4 Duos (i9502) from China to be used in Europe

I would really love getting the dual SIM version of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 as it would allow me to carry one less phone with me. But in the end I'm not sure if the pros outweight the cons.
Pros:
- Able to use two SIMs in the same phone
- Exynos 5 Octa, which will see very limited availability in Europe
Cons:
- China Unicom specific version
- No international warranty outside of China
- UI may not be available in English?
- Will be stuck with the stock Chinese firmware as the ROMs for i9500 / i9505 will not work on this
Is anyone else considering buying an i9502 to be used outside of China?

I would like to have i9502 and I have the same questions and worrying about the warranty outside of China. I'm gonna wait till it is available on eBay. I hope that some companies could give at least 12 months international warranty for this device.
I am thinking of buying one for use world wide. I assume no one will be developing a custom ROM for this version.
Is there a way to install the Play Store and Gapps?
As the S4 should be highly popular, we might see more developing for the exynos chipset. Once they come out with the aosp base for it, developing for the variants should be easier.
Since i9502 is China based, we should see a MIUI Rom for it soon

I thought samsung released their official rom for this phone? Doesn't it therefore mean that we can root this without any bugs? I remember the Note 2 dual sim custom rom had bugs on the map and caller id.
Can someone verify that once using the official rom, play store and Google apps will be available?

Looks like there is one out there

The only way to install Play Store and Google apps is to root the phone. Unfortunately, there's no available rooting method yet for Galaxy I9502. But I'm hopeful that it will be available in the future. Like the Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7102 Dual Sim variant, a working rooting procedure was eventually made available.
I have ordered my Galaxy I9502 and can't wait to get my hands on it.

I ordered from taobao.com thru an agent in my country. Just need to choose a trustworthy seller. Or you can order from etotalk.com but the price is a little higher and payment method is not safe.

So you're gonna live with the fact that you don't have Play Store? Or do you have a work around?

No, I'm optimistic a rooting tool will be available once this phone is released.

Based on offical specs, I'm very sure an unlocked SGS4 I9502 will work in my country and Europe too.
Here's why:
SGS4 I9502 Supported Network Frequency:
WCDMA 850/900/1,900/2100MHz
GSM 850/900/1,800/1900MHz
GSM Coverage:
GSM 900 / GSM 1800 MHz are used in most parts of the world: Europe, Asia, Australia, Middle East, Africa.

3G Coverage:
In general, the various UMTS bands are deployed as follows:
Band I (W-CDMA 2100) in Europe, India, Africa, Israel (Cellcom, Orange, Pelephone[4]) Asia, Australia (metropolitan Optus and Vodafone), New Zealand (ITU Region 1, 2degrees Vodafone NZ), Thailand (TOT (Thailand)), and Brazil (part of ITU Region 2)
Band II (W-CDMA 1900) in North America and South America (ITU Region 2).
Band IV (W-CDMA 1700 or Advanced Wireless Services) in the United States (T-Mobile USA), Canada (WIND Mobile, Mobilicity, SaskTel, Vidéotron) and Chile (VTR Movil, Nextel Chile)
Band V (W-CDMA 850) in Australia (Telstra NextG, Vodafone), Hong Kong (SmarTone), Thailand (True move and DTAC), New Zealand (XT Mobile Network), Brazil, Canada, the USA, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic (Claro),Venezuela, other parts of South America, Israel (Pelephone,[4] Cellcom[5]), parts of Asia (ITU Region 2 and ITU Region 3), Poland (Sferia)

I bought mine in China and used it with China Mobile and my US T-Mobile SIM cards installed at the same time. When I landed back on US soil, it automatically switched to use my T-Mobile SIM. I haven't had any problems so far.
Does that mean you have Google apps and play store?
