Get the Galaxy Note or wait for Note 2? - Galaxy Note II General

Hi folks,
My contract expires this month and I'm thinking the Galaxy Note is for me. However, I noticed recently that Samsung are hinting at a possible october (EU) release date for the Note 2. I also noticed that there is a good chance it will look similar to the S3, a design which I really do detest, it reminds me of a bar of soap, not to mention it will mean a fair amount of waiting time. But is it really that much different to the original note in terms of power?
I've probably already answered my question here, but what are your thoughts? Anyone else thinking the same?

Seeing there are no specs for a note 2 only assumptions based on the s3 at a larger size how can anyone answer your question.

that we don't know really what the Note 2 will look like or anything else until samsung leaks some infos. Your decision is one of the most easy - if you are eager to get a large screen phone and don't want to wait, go for the Note but if you want the most powerful phone in the Samsung lineup, go for the S3. Personally, the large screen of the Note is worth every money especially if you browse the internet a lot but the design of the S3 is also appealing and you will certainly look cool if you own a recently released device - people will think that this person has a lot of cash to be able to afford such expensive device...haha...lol

I recommend you to hold on, don't buy any Note and keep waiting for Note 4S+.
That will definitely far more advance than the GT-N7000 Note!

Ditto
The Note is last year's tech. Hold off especially if you are getting locked in for 2 years.

Wait for it, use a dumb phone in the meantime.
The GNote is not maintained by Samsung anymore (LPY bug and Screen Issues).

Wow are we getting GN2?
When?
What is the spec?
However, if you want to wait for GN2 you might need to wait more than a year

I heard Oct 2012. Sorry to be lazy to quote any source, but try googling and see.
I vote to get the S3 Korean version which is Quad Core +2GB of RAM.
Anyway, I think you can sell the S3 without much loss. The resale value should be quite strong?

in your place i would take note and later get note 2, sell note 1 ;D

If they would bring out a note 2 that had the exact same design I'd do it, I really can't get on board with the S3 design though, hate those curves. It really is as if it was designed by their team of lawyers despite what they might say!

I'd get one if i were you. We don't even know for sure that there will be Note 2 - not to mention when.
Not to mention the fact that Note 2 - obviously - will be better, but Note 1 already has everything you would possibly need at the moment.
About Samsung not supporting Note anymore - no offense but that's quite "curious" opinion. We just had 4.0 update, how is that not supporting ? Ok, there are bugs and serious problems but give them time to fix them, don't expect updates after 2 weeks - this is not Apple ( 1 good thing about them i guess ).
Anyway, who cares about Samsung's support if there's CM9
"If they would bring out a note 2 that had the exact same design I'd do it, I really can't get on board with the S3 design though, hate those curves. It really is as if it was designed by their team of lawyers despite what they might say!"
I'm afraid Note 2 might share the "nature-pebblish" design of the S3...

Second good this about apple, and second reason why you OP should wait for GNote 2: http://techpp.com/2011/10/27/sorry-state-of-android-updates-support-infographic/

It's not for everyone but what I usually do (because I am an update freak) is to buy a second hand phone for a good price. Use it until the launch of the new note. And then sell it back for about the same price.
If you do it right you can always have the last technology without spending that much money. The secret is to sell before the new model comes. And to buy after all the first hype is over. It works...

I think if I would personally get the S3 then sells it when the Note2 is out. The S3 resale value will be much higher than the Note 1.

IMO go for the note. You can always trade it in for note 2 when it comes.. S3 isnt worth it. I prefer note to s3 anyday!!!
but if you have a lock in.. then better to wait it out!!

The Note is the most useful/useable phone right now, the Note2 is just an idea still. Get a Note and swap to Note2 later.

If you are in US then you have a good 7 to 8 months with Anerican Note..Go for it...
I think I am the only one who likes the new s3 design...it feels so nice & rounded in the hand...

What about buying second-hand Note and resell it when Note2 out? That way you won't lose much money and by the mean time you'll know if the note fit you or not.

I'm gonna buy the phone outright from Amazon, so if I change my mind 4 months down the line, I could just return it for the full price I paid (say it's faulty or something, or I don't like it)and then put the rest towards a note 2, couldn't I?

I think Amazon does that just for 30 days .
It would be cool though, as I did buy mine from Amazon, as the price of it new was almost the same as the second hand devices were selling on eBay (crazy).
The price of a Note now is about 430 euros, and the new Note II should start at 650-750 euros, so maybe even if the Note II was out you would have to spend almost 50% more to get one.
If you are getting it for free by staying in a contract, than it might be worth the wait, but otherwise you need to do the calculations.
For me, after I got my Note, and I am with it for just a few weeks I can say that all the news about the bricks, horrible ICS update (slow and without some nice features like the widget preview) and the lack of Samsung to acknowledge that there is a problem and that they are working on it, is making me seriously consider the return of my new toy.
The screen and size are OK for me, but the fact that SG3 is all smooth and nice and G.Note users are left with a buggy and slow OS, when most of us spent way over 450 euros (over 560 USD) on it, is making me mad. Now with the new tool from Chainfire I have discovered that my eMMC chip has the bug that Samsung doesn't want to acknowledge.
Finally the bug that prevents my Note to go into deepsleep, and consumes the battery incredibly fast for idle (about 6%/h) is just unbelievable.
Well I'm sorry for this feedback, but if Samsung does not do something soon, I'll might be searching for a cheap 2nd hand smartphone to let me by until I make my mind on what to buy.

i got a nexus s Is the galaxy nexus worth the upgrade

I'm really tempted to buy the galaxy nexus but I got a nexus s and
This phone still on some boss **** ice cream sandwich just turned this to a
new Phone so the question is should i upgrade and import my unlocked
Nexus for 700$ and just keep my nexus s in my collection or just stick with what I got and
Wait for the next one that will most likely be 1080p screen quote me on that .
.....check me out @[email protected] leave comments
At this point I would say save your money. Use what u have for a few months. The galaxy nexus is nice...but there are more powerful phones out currently. I'm losing all my concern for ics.
My vote, save your money.
I was in same boat. But now that I see how well ICS runs on the NS, it is like having a new phone. Just gonna hold onto it. Maybe get the next Nexus while all my friends are one year into their Galaxy Nexus contracts and can't upgrade
I don't think Galaxy Nexus is that much better than the Nexus S, especially considering the price tag. If you're going to upgrade go with Galaxy S II, its cheaper and has a better screen. Once rooted, its the same as GN
I was also tempted to upgrade to the GNexus, but after ICS I am not that tempted anymore. I am considering wait for the next Nexus (after having two non-Nexus phones I refuse to buy anything that is not a Nexus).
Keep the good feed back coming!!!
There's no real benefit upgrading imho. Especially if it's a 2y contract. Right now I'd take a payout instead of a new phone if it was my turn to prolong the contract.
No new OS, no new uberly good hardware. At the end the price is also a deciding factor. For a small upgrade, not worth it imho.
But in the end this is the Nexus S forums, some bias has to be expected
if you already own the i9020, i can say it's not worth the upgrade to i9250
wait for something better
if you read over the GN i9250 forum a lot of people have mixed feeling about that phone
or at least wait until the price drop do like $200~$300 before getting it
by then most of the bugs and problems should have either been fixed by Google or by the XDA community
IMHO, it's worth the upgrade.
Out of the box, the Galaxy Nexus is speedier and has a more beautiful screen than Nexus.
Not worth it right now. Wait a couple of months and the price on the GN is going to drop like a rock. Just like did with the NS.

I bought my nexus s unlocked so I ain't got no contract
But I feel they could of done better with the galaxy nexus
Nexus s still go hard
I think most people agree that it's an incredibly warranted update.
It's bigger and badder in every way.
Whether or not it's $700 worth it is another store though.
The NS still holds it own when it comes to mobile phones.
I'd say it's not quite there yet to the point where you NEED to get one.
Maybe in a year when Samsung releases the Galaxy III S it'll be a good time to upgrade.

Better screen? How so, because its samoled + vs samoled? In person and go the naked eye the screen on the gn is far better than the sgs2.
tapa tapa tapa
Ive just received my GN!!! Its incredible. For me, its worth the change. Awesome screen, awesome power inside. I've ICS on my NS since Saturday, and its more-less the same. However, I can say that the FEEL of it is NOT the same.
I would say, just go to a shop and see the screen. Put your NS beside, and then decide.
Have fun!
Wouldn't trade my NS for any other phone on the market right now. Have read way to many mixed reviews about the GN to even consider that thing.

I got my GN for over a week. It's true that it's not a huge upgrade from NS, especially now it also has ICS. Screen is bigger and it's quite faster though. My only gripe is the screen is not as good as NS.
If you want the best and have money to blow, go for it, otherwise wait a while till you can get it cheap. If you are tight on money, definitely are smarter things to spend your money on.

For not that big of an improvement, I would hold off. As usual things are changing quick, use your upgrade for the one after!

yeah $700~$800 for a minor upgrade... it's a very expensive decision if you ask me
do you feel like spending that much money for an extra core in the CPU and a 720 resolution screen
which by the way is causing many Apps incompatibilities until the Apps developers releases a newer version of their Apps to support 720
that's another thing to consider
but like other have said, if money rains from the sky for you, then go get it

i9300 is now obsolete!

Note: thread title is not exactly true but to some extent.
I'm angered by Samsung release S3 LTE i9305 which made my current i9300 seem old and less advanced. I don't want to argue if 2GB RAM or LTE is necessary but it's obvious that i9305 is better version. Even the upcoming Note2 comes with 2GB RAM and better software (new gallery, etc) than S3. It's now a fact that S3 i9300 no longer the best phone of samsung after less than 4months...
One of the reason why I'm so angry is due to their sale tactics. I think samsung tactics and marketing are dirty. They seem to be very well planned and executed. Here's what they do in these few months in Singapore...
30 May: S3 16GB (White, Blue) launched at SGD$998.
28 July: This is when I got my S3
25 Aug: S3 32GB (White, Blue) launched at SGD$998. 16GB version reduced to SGD$898.
Why reduce the price of 16GB version?
1 Sept: S3 (Red) launched.
13 Sept: S3 LTE 16GB (White, Grey) announced with JB preloaded, coming end of Sept at SGD$998. JB coming to i9300 in Oct.
It's the same day as iPhone 5 keynote here in Singapore, samsung must have planned and decided to announce on this day. The price is same as i9300 first launch?! and we only getting JB in Oct, way after S3 LTE released?!
20 Sept: Market price check on S3 16GB, SGD$790. Resale value is pathetic
22 Sept: S3 (Brown) launch.
I felt that...
Samsung tricked us buying their best smartphone and then trolled us by releasing better variant/version.
They just to want get more sales without caring and benefiting us the early i9300 adopters.
What do you think?
My phone still works so I don't care.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
You better be trolling, please tell me you are. Do you really think that any phone will stay number 1 of the production line for even a year these days? 6 months today and a phone is considered "old" by some people's standards.
There's no denying the i9300 is still an awesome phone, though!
There is always a new phone, why bother. If I wanted an iPhone Ive bouth an iPhone. Read as a new release twise a year...

I hate threads like this. Are you saying Samsung should sit on this new phone so you feel better? Technology moves along just below the speed of light and it can make your stomach queezy! If you can't handle it, don't play the game! Your phone still works exactley the same as the day you bought it!
Someone doesn't know how fast technology moves, if you want a phone, that will be the best the company has made for at least 1 year, buy an iPhone, things in the Android world move fast, and always will.
There has to be reason they decided to have 2GB RAM in the 4g enabled S3, I would expect it will be using over 1GB RAM out of the box, then you install things and it will go up fast.
4g and 2GB of RAM is all that makes it better than the I9300, yes its more technologically advanced because of the 4g, however when the I9300 was released it was still up in the air as to whether 4g (at least in UK) would be rolled out by EE, one complaint could have pushed it back so Samsung's this was Samsung's only option, I for one would hate them making a phone with a 4g chip in if EE's rollout was slowed down, it pushes the price up for no reason.
You wanted the latest and greatest as soon as it came out it's not Samsung's fault it's yours... get over it.
OP is a spoiled self entitled idiot. Technology advances quickly. Wake up. End of story.
What's stopping you from selling your sgs3 and buying the updated one? If you're locked into a 2 year contract then that's your own fault. When you signed that contract you will have already known you wouldn't upgrade for 2 years. Did you expect time to stand still for the next 24 months too?
I'm planning to sell my sgs3 and replace it with the note 2 unless something better is coming out soon. I'm not angry. I'm not even slightly annoyed. Get over it.
Of course they care about sales! They are a business!

I'm not stupid, I knew better phones were gonna come along while I own my i9300 but nothing's gonna be that much better in the space of 4 months.
So I'm not gonna be one of those who's obsessed with making sure people know I have the best phone all the time and buying something new every few months simply because it's better.
And I honestly think the S3 is so good that the S4 really is only gonna be a tiny step up and I'll be keeping this until 4G comes out on Three Mobile UK.

In 6 months, the OP'd be talking about the 2GB SIII like he's talking about this one now. Technology doesn't stop because you can't or refuse to keep up.

To buy or not to buy?

I'm in this boat as well. It's a hard decision a the moment because every phone has a down side! Manufacturers could make perfect phones but then they wouldn't be able to sell new ones! I'm stuck between this and the One X. The one x has a better camera, screen and audio and 32gb storage the only thing that puts me off is the tegra 3 not thinking it's that great. On the other hand the nexus 4 has lots of problems and those stupid on screen soft keys would drive me nuts especially considering they don't go away in any games. Man it's a hard decision. May I add that the One X is only £80 more expensive and it seems to be getting better with every update.
I'm sure if you took the time to read through the countless decent threads, you'd find your answer.
As you guys are in Europe please don't buy it. Hopefully Google will send the stock of your countries to Spain so I finally will be able to get a N4. xD
I have had mine since last Thursday, and if I dropped it today and it exploded in to a pile of dust and my insurance gave me enough money to buy any phone I wanted... I'd still pick another Nexus 4.
The S3 it replaced on Jelly Bean was fast, but the Nexus 4 put's it to shame, the only thing it doesn't do as well is the camera, but that's about the least important thing on my list of things I look for, and the Nexus 4 ticks everything else.
Phil
I'll guess I need some hands on experience with the N4
I think its worth the buy and this is my own personal reason why (already bought it and owned it). If you go with either HTC One X or Samsung SIII you have the benefit of having the abundant of offline storage, their own personalize software (Sense or Touchwiz), and all the little feature that google cut out to maintain cost. If you go with the Nexus 4 you get teh benefit of having google support the software/update on your phone until it can't run it no more. You don't get that from HTC or Samsung. Even their flagship phones support and updates cut off ater 1 years MAX. Sometimes its even less than one year as they are already prepare to lauch a new flagship device. Seeing as how the One X and the S III already been out for a while now I think they will probably cut off in about 5 months or so. If you order it directly from google then its even better cause its almost 1/2 the price.
You should try it out before you buy, when you get the chance that is. I upgraded from a Samsung Vibrant, so this new phone was like an epiphany. It's very fast, smooth, and a nice device. It's also my first official Google Nexus device and I'm loving having JB 4.2. In the end it's you that's going to purchase the device. Make a list of what features you want and need, and then go down the list or let others know. Otherwise, everybody can say whatever they want about buying or not buying a device.
In my case BUY BUY BUY!
Very awesome phone. I upgraded from an S3 and couldn't be happier. However, good luck getting it before Christmas.
Thanks for your answers! Helped me a lot... I think I will go with the Nexus. I never had a Nexus device and even though I love the features of the GNote and all the other phones, I always complain about how long Samsung needs to update unfortunately for now there's no chance for me to try it out, but I think my Stores should get it on December 15th.

Have note 2 but love htc one. Good or bad decision

When htc was produced good handsets I loved them and always bought htc but unfortunately I then discovered Samsung .
I have a note 2 which is awesome . Battery is fantastic and the screen is excellent but I've seen a few reviews on you tube for the htc one and am so tempted but I don't know if it will be a bad decision.
Will the one hand anything my note 2 won't ?
I love the 5.5" display on my note but am ok about going down 0.8" as we all know size isn't important
I can get £250 recycle for my note 2 which means I lose just over the same amount as ive had my note 2 since launch. I can get a payg on three for £475 and the launch models are usually unlocked and unbranded or £520 off amazon but don't know if it's with the extra dosh.
Oh help me please my wife thinks I'm daft wanting the latest thing but the htc one looks awesome I just don't want to regret the decision if I get one
Thanks

im a note 2 users as well and im bored and want the latest and greatest.. but i suggest just wait to see what Samsung announces next week.
HTC done the same thing last year and Samsung ended up topping them. so we would have to see what happens this time, its just best to wait for a few more days.. you'll still have time to sell your note 2 regardless since the HTC One doesn't release till the 22nd people are saying.
im getting the HTC One but i am not selling my Note 2 for it.. not worth it.. no matter how old it is.. might consider selling it for the Galaxy S4 or Note 3
I'm in the same position. I could hold on to my Note 2 and get the One on upgrade in a couple of months, sell the note 2 for about €450 and cover the extra €150 to buy the one on release then save my upgrade for later.
Regarding the Samsung updates, my girlfriends Vodafone branded SGS3 updated to JB ages ago. I got sick of waiting for my Vodafone branded one x to update to JB so I just sold it.

Btw mancuk29, why not sell your note 2 instead of recycling. You can get more than 250 for selling it.
The Note II is practically flawless, so don't jump for the One's looks and HW just yet, wait for the first few weeks of user feedback to see it's issues. I'd only switch for practical reasons say you want a smaller phone, don't care about the sylus, plastic is falling apart etc., but do not jump for style over substance reasons, make sure you'd be better off with the One and the investment it worth it. There are few perfect devices on the market, the Note II is one of them.

I 'm sure after getting hands on real device you love it more than N2 and P4u update their recent review in which they mention that battery life is really good but I personally think N2' battery life is bit better but more or less H one's bettery life will not be disappointing, you have to compare and choose between three major factor large vs 4.7 screen , plastic vs metallic body, standard audio/video vs better audio/video shooting

Guys, i agree the htc one is very beautiful, all metal and all, but seriously how many of us carry their mobiles without a case/cover? If i were u, and the size and weight of note 2 were not an issue for me, i dont think i would have let go of the n2 for one. N2 screen does look amazing. For me its just too big.
I love the one, specially the looks, but i guess i will keep my hox for atleast a few months, till proper user feedbacks and comparisons with hox are available. Again, i have kept my hox protected in a cover since day one, and it has helped tremendously in surviving a few falls.

I wish I bought all my phones from you (the OP). £250 for a Note 2 is a bargain.
I personally think you'll be in for a shock when you see how much smaller the screen is. I think the drop in battery life will put you off too.
But at the rate you buy phones it's not a problem I suppose. If you decide you don't like it you can always upgrade to the Note 3 when it's out.

You'll pick-up:
A brighter, higher res display (LCD = more realistic colors and less contrast [greyer blacks])
HTC's new camera approach (4MP vs. 8MP on the Note and 13MP on new high-end phones)
Zoe to capture and manipulate images in a new way
Dual amplified front facing speakers
BlinkFeed to view news and social sources on the lock screen
A more premium feeling device made from metal vs. plastic
A faster SoC/GPU
An IR port to control your media devices
Sense which has a more modern and integrated "feel" than TW
You'll lose:
S Note, S Pen, airview, multiview
A 5.5" SAMOLED (more vivid colors, better outdoor visibility, blacks=black) display and return to a 4.7" display that was last year's standard
Some app compatibility until developers modify their programs to support 1080P displays
All the non-S Pen related TW features like motion and voice controls and Smart Stay/Rotation
A huge swappable battery
Cheap expandable and swappable storage up to 80GB
The ability to update to the latest official ROMs using Odin without voiding your warranty
Wireless charging (if you're even using it)
AVRCP 1.3 to show title/track/artist when using A2DP and possibly the ability to direct dial calls via BT (you still couldn't in Sense 4+)
For people that bought the N2 without planning to use its expanded features it was probably not the greatest choice in the first place. I replaced my Teg3 One X with it solely for those additional features. Otherwise, a 5.5" phone is a pain in the ass to use. If people bought it for the larger display then, unless they've changed their mind, the One and SGS4 aren't really equivalent. Since you didn't mention features and did mention you don't care about a smaller display than any of the "newer and shinier" devices coming out will fit the bill. And at 12" away you won't notice the difference between 1080P and 720P because the human eye with 20/20 vision can't resolve the additional detail at that distance and beyond no matter how much everyone swears they see a difference.

[Q] S4 $200 or S3 for $10? beating a dead horse

Sorry all for brining it up again. I've got a dual core Evo 3D that's struggling along and finally can upgrade. Can people comment on the real world difference between the S3 and S4? I figured many S4 owners are previous S3 owners. I can get the S3 for $10 or S4 for $200, both under contract. Just trying to justify the price difference really. I consider resale on the device too, but figured I wouldn't get an additional $190 in resale when my next upgrade is available, pointing me back at the S3.
I don't play any performance intensive games, mostly use mapping and web browsing. I might actually watch videos now that I might have some reliable 4G LTE performance where I am. So far with Wimax 4G it was pointless to try and my 3G failed me as it does with most.
Thanks.

S4 has a newer processor and better gpu and some more features that I think will be ported to s3 too. If you are not a gameplayer I would recommend you s3 as its still a good device.
On the other hand if you want a good device with plenty of updates take a look also for HTC one and Sony xperia z as they are great devices and much better from s4 or s3.
The S4 will definitely have more resale value than the S3 down the line. As far as making a choice between the two, its either you want the newest and better or the older and still good. I recommend checking out some YouTube videos comparing the two.

I will take a look at youtube, thanks. In 2 years time, do you really think the S4 would get $190 more than the S3? I thought even the S2 gets reasonable resale still.

I'm not a fan on HTC at the moment so I'll pass on that. My wife has the S3 so I want to stick with a Galaxy of some sort.
The only thing about the S3 is that in two years when your contract is up it will be a 3 year old device. That's a long time in tech. The S4 is essentially twice the processing as the S3 and a bigger battery with a Hd screen etc. I would save money and get the better phone. Also I've seen the S4 on wirefly.com and amazon for $150. Just shop around. Sprint will be the most expensive. Prices change daily so keep your eye out.

I'm doing an upgrade and haven't seen anything under $188. At $150 I'd start leaning for S4. I have the money to spend on the S4, but just trying to get someone to really justify to be why it's worth an extra $190 at this point and time. Will the S3 really be so bad in 2 years time? I did think the same thing for my last phone, that'd it'd be fine, dual core 1.2GHz, 1 GB ram, but now it's a slow snail.
For ebay, just did a quick search. Used S3s are selling at maybe $225-$250 and used S2s are going for about $100 less. By that comparison, in 2 years, I'd hope to get something in the $150 range for a used S3 vs maybe $250 for an S4. Does that seem reasonable? With that, I feel better off for the S3 now since it'd almost $200 cheaper for me. All of this is pointless if the S3 will really struggle to meet my needs in 2 years.

I have owned the S2, Galaxy Nexus, S3 and now the S4. I bought the S4 off contract after trading in my S3 to Best Buy for $262.50, I paid $385 out of pocket. The main reason why I love the S4 is the hardware. The battery is phenomenal, the screen is beautiful and it's light and looks better. Also better antennas etc. Not to mention it's a beast on the inside so I know whatever new apps or whatever Android 5.0 brings this phone will handle no problem. It's got a whole year of innovation and technological advances behind it. Idk, I would just wait a little bit and you will see the S4 for $150 sometime soon.

Think about it like this. App developers are developing to support faster hardware. Who knows what you're favorite app will be in a year & if the S3 will support it?
The S4 is packed with more goodies in nearly the same size container as the S3, including larger screen, processor, battery, and RAM.
The S4 is entirely worth it. I was the first in my office to get one, now 3-4 others have it after seeing it.

That depends on where you sell it and your area. Condition it's in etc. No resale value is ever set in stone.

It's $150 at bestbuy. You think your current phone is slow? Add 1GB of ram to it and you have an s3. Then think two more years down the road. It would be better to get the S4 yes. But is it better for the money? That is a question only you can answer for yourself since its your money.

I got the S4 at release date, and I definitely go with the S4. You'll definitely get your money back with the S4, I sold my S3 on Craigslist for 315 cash the day after the S4 came out and actually made money with my upgrade.
If you get the S3, it'll hardly be worth anything with a resale as it'll be two gens behind when you try to sell it one or two year in the future. Plus you'll have a much much easier time selling the S4 then you will the S3 then. I can honestly say the S4 is a huge upgrade, it's just simply better in every category even if it's not visibly evident.
