Question here folks whats the best rom and kernal have you used? I use the latest Miui rom, but get random reboots and freezes and crashes. WTF stuff is this? I love the fact of the devs helping out, but, its almost like the MT4G is still releasing new roms and people aren't staying with it. Don't get me wrong, but i'm constantly having issues with roms anymore than what it has been for some time now. I will however be upgrading to the SGIII when it comes out, but for the time being. I just want something more stable than what it was using. I don't hin the EXT 4 is good for MT4G. Its much more than what the hardware has than what EXT 3 had. Anyone feel the same? Let me know thanks
Doesn't exist. A simple search would have told you that there is no "best" rom/kernel. Its all personal preference.
We already have that annoying thread "[What's the best custom ROM for mt4g]"...about 10 pages of answers. Guy didn't respond once. Seriously, there is no "BEST" ROM. A feature may not be working that someone can't live without meanwhile you don't ever use.

I am looking for a stable rom with the least problems that can utilize the MyTouch 3G's speed, social networking applications, google apps (not really important), & T-mobile apps.
Can anyone tell me a good rom for these features along with a rating from your point of view?
THANKS IN ADVANCE... I am receiving my MyTouch3G tomorrow so thanx alot

hmmm your main concern when it comes to a rom is the speed of your is social network apps? Ill just let that one speak for itself... but to anwser your question (which has been asked 100's of times(search buttons are cool))
take a look at the threads that start with [ROM] I'm willing to bet somewhere in each of those threads you'll find more than one post saying "This is the [best/fastest/most stable] rom out" and if you look at who said it they most likely said it on a few other roms too thats because each person uses their phone differently and each rom can either be good or not for that specific person.
then theres also the style if your a fan of hero then hero roms are gonna be the best, you also have the live/die for Cyanoden people... can you guess what they consider to be the best rom??? and now theirs tattoo, blur and pulse style roms coming out so that just adds to the pile.
The only thing you can really do is flash until your happy, which its a good thing that it takes 30sec to flash a new rom, to tell you the truth i flashed a good 20 roms before I stuck with the one I use now and I bet someone would disagree that its the best rom but from all the ones ive used for what i do on my phone its the best for me
so instead of asking people that most likely use their phone for completely opposite things you do, I suggest you just flash a few and figure out whats best for what you use if its not better then the last one you flashed then restore [thats what the backups for ] and so on...
Sorry I am new to the whole Phone based world as last phone I had was a Moto Razor as a *nix dev I like things compiled in simple tree. So I was wondering is there a place where I can view the top cooked ROMs with its pro/con's comparing it to others? Searching is pointless as I have no idea what it means and I see so many same posts.
ATM I am using the TmoHD2 with standard ROM. Its tweaked to the max but I hit the limitation of it as most things I want to remove is stored in ROM and can't delete it. So looking for a clean ROM if anyone have suggestion as I am sure many have tried other ROMs please name few for example like linux distro, thanks.
Your really not going to find anything like that. You can find plenty of threads where somebody asks for " what is the best ROM " or something along those lines and you will find that they are all filled with the same type of post. Everybody has a different idea as to what is the best ROM o the cleanest ROM.
Your best bet would be to start reading learning the flash process and start flashing till you find what you like. Or you could start reading on how to cook a ROM and make your own using somebodies kitchen.
For now I am still a virgin in the Phone world it won't take me long before I jump in this bandwagon if I have the time that is, ATM I am busy with our own CVS only reason I got the HD2 is to view source code for our current project as it would be accessible from any where. Also my own P2P client has me pined down thats another convo for another forum, so ya.
I understand as I seen for myself the mess in Rom Dev thread there is so many I was just hopping few people here has at least tried few and can agree on. I don't have the time to play with HD2 ATM as this is the only WinOS I used let it be WinMO 6.5 if it was up to me I would already went on and deployed a linux distro on it but ATM I am not up for that as its a new world for me.
i use energy as there loaded with loads of tweaks programs i like and setup nicley, there is Duttys his are pretty stock, ligh and fast, Miri are good, it depends what you want really there all built up for specific reasons, so take ya pic
Oh I understand the whole to busy thing. I currently use NRG's ROM as well , always seems to do what I want with no issues.
As for linux on the HD2 good luck with that one. There are several Devs currently working on getting Android running on the HD2's hardware. Since Android is based on linux you would run into the same issues they are having, getting the software to run on the new SnapDragon processor.
I appreciate it is a pretty hefty time commitment but for the uninitiated (holds up his hand) it would be really useful to have a list of the main custom roms with a few lines giving a very brief summary of the selling points of that Cooked ROM.
This would allow us to scan down for the things that might interest us and go to the appropriate threads to read further to decide.
As it is, it is rather overwhelming to try to plow through all the threads in the cooked rom section.
For example some might want a similar-to-stock but with better radio functions, faster and stable.
Others whilst prefer ones with lots of flashy things cooked in etc
Well you can feel free to start this thread you so desperately need. As well as keep up on it. The thing is that new ROMs are coming out daily and trying to keep an on going list of these new ROMs would get old fast. Usually each ROM builder will ist what he was trying to accomplish inside of his thread with in the first post. Most will same the same thing. They were going for a fast and stable build.
Like I said before about the only thing you can really do is look over the ROM choose whether you think it is right for you and flash it. Give it a test drive, if it works for what you want great if not onto the next one. Sorry this is not the answer your looking for but unless you want to step up and start making the list then it's not going to happen.
i was after something similar.
I am in need of a cooked rom as i have less than 2mb spare on my phone so need one. However, i have no idea which one to pick.
So if there was a thread with a real brief description of the pro's-cons of each cooked rom that would be a god send.
Please?

There was surely no need to be so arsey about this matter was there?
Ya well sorry if I offended anybody but I'm sure most here would agree with me. It's not hard to read the first few lines of a ROM thread to see if it's right for you. If it's not after you flash it move on to the next one. Ya it sucks having to flash a couple to find the right one but that's the way it is. Keeping up on a list would be a pain in the ass. I also see no point to a list of pro's or cons of any particular ROM as most are built for the same thing, speed and stability. The only real differences you are going to see are what programs the person has loaded.

tbh mate maybe this is my noobish? But for me it is the fear factor of having never done it before and the fear of 'will i brick the phone'. So the thought of having to do it several times is not something i am keen to do. Maybe after i have done one i will be more laissez faire about the whole idea? but atm i want to do it once and once only.
i dont know the real differences between the roms? Is it really just programmes loaded on them? If it is then what is the quickest and stablest rom?
From what I see most all cook from the same files. Sure some tweak the reg settings a bit here and there while some might not. But for the most part they all do their little thing to make it theirs in some way. Themes that are load, programs that are loaded, and different sms clients. But like I said they pretty much all list their little tweaks in the first few posts, what they have preloaded,etc,etc......
As long as you follow the guides flashing is a simple affair and trust me you will have to reflash several times since going to a custom ROM will usually bring it's own set of problems. And because of this the ROM builders are always updating the builds. Whether it be because a new build version of Windows came out, or they feel some reg edits really make no difference, to change up the preloaded apps to newer build versions. It's on going. Welcome to the world of windows and the ever changing progress.
Now are you starting to understand why a list would be of no use. It would only link to a ROM that would most likely not even be close to what was originally posted upon. Things are always changing and to keep up with that would just be to much. So you flash till you find what you like and you stick with him for awhile or if the ROM works for you maybe you leave it for a bit. But at some point you will come back full circle and you will be looking for something better.
Like most I run NRG roms and have for some time. Sometimes I'll go a month or so with the same build while the ROMs build might have been updated once or twice. So you roll the dice back up the stuff you need and flash to the newest one it could be faster it could have more bugs. You will never know till you try it. If it doesn't work out try another ROM from another builder. No that wasn't it either ok flash back to the last ROM that served you well restore the file you need. Stick with it again for awhile till the urge hits you to try something new.
Ok guys we all knew this was gonna happen j\k
"Best Rom" Threads never last long So it is time to close this one as well.
Here is the best advise I can give you. It envolves alot of reading, Most roms have a list of issues if any in the first few posts. So read over them and then find one that sounds good and give it a go. As far a bricking your device, yes the chance is there but they are slim as long as you read. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.
No, this is not one of the usual 'What's the best ROM out there' threads.
I am looking for something specific and hoping all you people can be of help.
I have been using a MIUI NAND ROM for some time now and been very happy with it but am now looking for a change with all the new stuff I see out there.
However, one of the reasons I am using the MIUI ROM is that it was one of the few at the time that supported WiFi Hotspot. The Gingerbread ROMs at the time didn't work.
Do any of the newer ICS ROM's support Hotspot working? If so, which ones have people used. I would perhaps like a move back to a Sense ROM if there is one our there to recommend, but this isn't a prime requirement.
Before you all shout at me, I have looked through the current threads on ROM's, but the issue of working Hotspot is not one that crops up very often, hence this question.
Thanks for reading, and looking forward to all your recommendations
If you read carefully you'll find that in most cases its NATIVE Wi-Fi hotspot that doesn't work, whilst third party hotspot apps do. No I can't recommend one, never used it.
+1 really wanna push this thread....
I basically got stuck with 2 (/3)
NexusHD2-JellyBean-4.1.2-CM10 V1.1 tytung <--my old favourite, had this installed for 2 days (until I broke my "new" phone - but will work again this week)
PACman HD2 v1.1 [PA/AOKP/CM10] Xylo <--my new favourite, from what I read
(EvoHD2v10 ICS 4.0.4-full HWA "Fastest ICS ever" ) <--whats with good old ICS?
convince me. I want a stable running daily use OS. shouldnt have major bugs (like reboots/having to restart/phone etc.), like in tytungs ROM, I once answered a call and there was just a "brrrrrrrrrrrrrr" <--"phone" not responding do you want to close it, pretty bad
If its very customizable/technical (like xylo) - fine, I love to be able to engineer my own things (I dont care if minor bugs)
so what do you guys think? which one do you enjoy the most and why
EDIT: MODS don't take this as a best thread ROM please, im not willing to ask this due to everyone having his own experience and preferences, im asking for STABLE thank you hope you understand and if you are going to delete pm me on what is wrong so I can change it
Hello, I've just read the Best ROM post it, but I think im not asking the same as the best ROM
I actually want a ROM which is stable for my girlfriend, I have tested loads of roms out there, and in my opinion latest rom are the best because of new features but they can have problems in speed or bugs (which is obvious ^^ now its to your choice if you want to keep updating your rom or stick for a stable one some time)
Everyone has his favourite rom and for X reasons, I'm not asking this...
I want a stable rom for someone who doesn't want problems with his phone (sometimes I think to only reflash and leave it like that so she doesnt wine)
Im actually thinking about few roms..
1. MSGINGER4.0 (I used this rom for about a month and I didn't find any bugs and excellent battery +720p, just the problem about 2g/3g toogle which in gingerbread is impossible to make it work + cm7 settings not working make it very little customizable - for ex. disabling in notifications the bluetooth which some people never use)
2. CM7 ROM: I know there are many out there, I've tried skanwich ones and Quarx on the good old days, I think its very stable but it has a higher battery drain than the msginger4.0 but maybe its worth it for the customization
about POINT 2 I would like to get some feedback, I've been reading WhiteRabbit 1.8 edition and maniacs build, I find them very interesting but I would like to know your views after testing them, some people report bugs and this is the last thing my gf wants XD ¿could you guys tell me more about these 2 roms and why they are more stable or less than cm7 skanky?
3. MIUI? Good interface 0 bugs from my experience BUT highest battery drain out there
I know I should test myself and see, but I did that with cm10 2nd boot last quarx build (tested for 4 days).. It was the most stable rom + the best features (since it was latest build) and I decide it to put it on my GF defy... after 1 week I got the ext4 bug (didn't boot, my fault for formatting to ext4 since it was a experimental feature) so I went back to another rom but now my GF has commonly force close, freezes and data connectivity drops
SO... Don't take this a thread of what is the best build out there please, since I'm not asking for this.. Im asking for a stable rom for someone who doesn't like playing with this kind of stuff
P.D: Don't take anything I've said about all the roms badly please, I love them all and it has been my experience with them and I know maybe you have different views due to different experiences.. (I didn't believe 2 exact phones could give different bugs since I had 2 but this actually happen)
so, what is the most stable ROM out there? (thinking also about battery performance + features (this last one must be the least important when telling me your opinion ^^ thank you!))
30 views and nobody could give a short awnser
I have tried a lot of roms (CM,MIUI..etc)on my phone and there is always that one moment in the day when i feel like having the stock rom back . Unfortunately i cannot go back to the stock rom even if i wished too since i blindly flashed defy+ rom on my defy and there is no way to downgrade from BL7. Mobile companies spend a lot of money in R&D while preparing the stock rom keeping in mind a variety of users . Believe me a lot of people i know give me confused looks when i ask them if their phones are "rooted.". Thus mobile companies try to strike a balance between noob and the tech savy users and by no means are stock roms useless (yes some find them bloated) . I respect all developers for their knowledge and work and it is only because of communities like XDA can i run a JB based rom on my defy ( almost a dream) . If you are looking for a bug free rom with a good battery life i would suggest sticking to the rom that came along with the phone .
mariosanoguera, I read your assertion that this is not a "best ROM" thread, but the fact is it's close enough. The point behind that rule is to avoid debate about which ROM is good at anything....whether than be "most stable", "best for messaging", or whatever. What you're asking will cause a variety of responses, then one poster will disagree with another, then controversy starts, then arguments, and on and on. The admins of XDA have been doing this a long time, and you're not the first person to start a "best ROM" thread while trying their hardest to make it sound like it's not a "best ROM" thread. They will always be closed and always have been, and for good reason.
So please don't take this personally. This is a development-oriented site and we do whatever we can to foster an environment that promotes development. Threads which try to determine which developer's work is better than another's never turn out well, and therefore are never allowed, without exception.
So there's a myriad of ROMs out there for the SM-G900F. So far I've tried only CM13, and while I love the looks and feels of it I feel it isn't stable enough. I want a ROM that is small/clean, stable and fast with as few apps as possible (just enough for it to run properly). I don't want to flash every single ROM available (as I'm really bad at this and might destroy my phone in the process) just to test them out.
So I am asking on here, do you know of any ROM that is minimalistic, clean, fast and stable that would suit my needs? First and foremost I want my phone to work as a phone, but I want most features to work properly. Preferably recently updated too Fast and stable being priorities.
I am thankful for any advice I can get. Currently running my stock rom, but it's freaking 3.8gb big... O_O
Also; I am sorry if this is against the Forum Rules. I skimmed through them before posting and it does not seem to be a conflicting question and the search function will not answer my question as all threads with similar questions are personalized and outdated.
XtreStoLite although it is a bit old, it's still great. (All GS5 apps flawless and lite )
CM12 AOSP, lite (near stock but high customization )
Blisspop Have not tried it but heard it was great.
Galaxy Project, I am going to be flashing to this soon.
These are just a few off the top of my head, as always there are amazing people and rom makers on this form,
so just look around.
Try new kernels to get different functions (double tap to wake) or just for better battery (handle wakelocks...etc better) or faster (overclock gpu and cpu)
I'm also looking for some info on this because the Samsung Galaxy S 5 forums are a complete mess and very difficult to find info relating to ALL aspects of flashing, including rooting and recoveries! It never used to be like this.
So far I have tried these two roms and I'm now tired of the issues, lack of updates and fixes:
- Galaxy Project
- PhoenixROM
Both of the above are nice but the galaxy project has a known bug where you can't send SMS to legitimate international phone numbers such as +61xxxxxx using the default messaging app. So this was a waste of time for me
Phoenix ROM I've found that facebook integration with the phone has restricted contacts sync to the phone. I think this FB sync issue is due to the custom rom but repeated posts asking for comments / help has got nowhere.
Both of the above ROMs are laggy and slow down. There's no comment on this either. Pheonix ROM also doesn't continue playing music where it left off like the stock rom did. To explain further, I have the phone bluetooth with the car. I play music through the car from the phone. I stop the car / exit eg going to a shop. When I get back in the car, the music starts from the beginning of the 2 hour mp3. Pain in the bum. Phones shouldn't be a pain in the bum.
I don't want a ROM where I have to spend weeks customising it. This is boring.
I was going to check out Shohat ROM but reading the comments there's a bug with bluetooth audio streaming.
I'm too looking for a minimalistic (no bloatware!), clean, fast and stable ROM. Bonus would be extra enhancements to fix current problems. Not an easy task.
Just the fact that there's no response to my previous post shows the forums for the s5 is dead. Time to buy a new phone i think.
Shame really since htc development continued well after the phones were outdated.

Well this is a reply.... The S5 is still a great phone tho, but its your wallet.
And yea, some people make those question threads, but never reply unless they need help, or they screwed something up.
Either way, this is still a supported phone by many developers and staff. Enjoy your life.
As for a recommended ROM try Blisspop, if you want stock TW you could always go back to TGP.

Thanks for your help. The frustration is the lack of updates to ROMs when there's bugs. Lack of information. And difficulty in finding ROMs suitable.
I'll look up Blisspop, thanks.
Don't know what TW or TGP means. I'll google it.

TW == TouchWiz
TGP == The galaxy project.
Of course there are many Roms that I have not mentioned, also if you really want barebones android try cm 12, it's the closest to stock (AOSP) AFAIK. Just browse the forms.

Ah ok thanks. TGP is too buggy and laggy for me, similar to PhoenixROM. I do prefer touchwhiz though.
Currently using OmegaROM. It's fast and smooth. little customisations so thats good. I thought NFC was not working, but it turns out bluetooth being on and connected to my smartwatch was causing NFC not to work.
Facebook contacts sync still not working in this ROM though. Contacts sync works with Stock Samsung roms, but no others apparently. . Facebook has blocked contacts sync, not sure why.
