On the hunt for new ATT device - Networking

So my atrix is having some problems so i decided now would be a good time to get a new device. Im on AT&T and still have 1 year on the contract so i cant just upgrade. I want a device with a strong rom community as that is what i enjoyed about my old G1 trying roms. I was kinda looking at the galaxy note but don't know anyone with one that could comment on it. Any Ideas what i should look at?

I would go for a nexus device as it always receives the latest updates. The regular GSII has good development. The Note is another strong choice.

I have the Galaxy SII Skyrocket. which is same specs as the note... works great. i'd wait for the GS3 if i were you though.

HTC one X or S3

we have rumors if our tech support office that there will be a 3 new devices by the end of august (not sure which brand though but 1 is SGS3)
just tested the SGS3 on our product training, it is fking awesome, but the device is somewhat bulky and i think Galaxy Nexus looked better

What's your next phone going to be? It's been a good run EVO.

I'm a couple weeks away from being eligible for an upgrade with Sprint. I'm sure a lot of you guys are in the same boat as me. What phone are you looking to get next?
The EVO was as easy choice when it came out. There wasn't anything to compete with it other than the iPhone. I don't try to keep up with all the new phones until I am close to an upgrade. There is just too much out there to possibly keep up with.

The HTC Jewel, or what likely will be called the EVOx when it comes to Sprint

I upgraded to the et4g was gonna wait for the gnex but got the et4g free without using my upgrade and after playing with both side by side found the et4g to actually be nicer than the gnex
Edit: still got my evo too its active on my second line got to double upgrade from an evo and intercept to an epic touch 4g and evo
We are legion, for we are many

Probably going HTC arrive. It will be nothing on upgrade next month and want to tinker with a windows phone 7 for a while. Evo will go to my oldest who is running a HTC hero.
If I don't like that then my wife's phone is due in May. I'll swap it out for something else.
Current Android family
HTC evo 4g x 2
HTC evo shift
HTC hero
Motorola Xoom
Viewsonic G-tablet
HP Touchpad (running classic nerd)
So yeah just want to tinker with something new for a while
My upgrade is coming up next month as well. (I suppose a lot of us who got the EVO on/near launch day are)
I've put a lot of thought into it and I think I'm going for the GNex. Unless I find out the GS3 devices are coming soon.
My wife got the white Evo when that launched (about a month after the original Evo) and she's waiting for the Galaxy Journal.
I would like to see Sprint carry the Xperia line, particularly the S model. Looks pretty sweet. Otherwise I would go with another HTC flagship device. I might also consider the Galaxy Nexus.
My upgrade is also in April (another day 1 adopter) I'm waiting for either the Galaxy Journal or the S3 (depending on release date) Definitely want an LTE capable device. Not sure if the Journal is going to fall in that category or not.
I'm eligible in June but I'll wait for the first Sprint LTE phone at the end of this year, so long as the suck-factor is low for it.
Sprint is aware that a lot of the Evo owners are coming off contract. I am betting the Galaxy Nexus will be coming out before we fall off contract to entice renewal.
That's what I will be going with.
whatever the next LTE sprint phone with huge screen+lots of features.. will be.
june, i'll be eligible for an upgrade, so hopefully we get something good by then
Upgrade next month here as well. Currently there is nothing worth upgrading too.
I'm hoping it won't be too long until we see some LTE devices.

Couldn't agree more. The Et4g is nice, but I prefer HTC, and et4g has already been out for a bit now. I don't mind waiting to see what comes at all. Satisfied with my Evo.

Not due til the end of the year, so I'm going for the galaxy S III.
Not eligible till Feb. 2013 there should be plenty of devices to choose from by then.

I'm in the same boat but will wait and see what comes down the line. I got two E4GT phones for my kids and they are incredible. They lay waste to my EVO. Samsung really stepped up their game. I don't know if HTC will be able to compete from here on out since Sammy has fully commited to Android. I've used the Gnex and don't like it as much as the GSII. I really want a phone that has built in image stabilization for video. Other than that the GSII camera kills! Way better than my little Canon P/S.
I'm waiting for the GNex. I don't have choice since it's my dad's lines, but I think ICS is where it's at.

I am considering moving to Verizon for better LTE coverage.
OG EVO
I don't think I will be upgrading next month when my time comes. There is really nothing out IMHO that can still compete with the OG EVO. Meaning the custom roms, tweeks, etc that you can do to the phone. HTC makes a good solid phone and I would definetly have to stay with a HTC line
Not due till July so ill wait it out for the EVOX/jewel haven't heard to many good things from gnex owners
Pleasantly Mad.
I wanted to wait for the Gnex as well, but that 16gb non-expandable storage limitation is killing me. I want to be able to use my 32gb class 10 with my next phone.

Best AT&T Smart Phone (Lumia 900, HTC One X, Galaxy 3, etc)?

Signing up for a new contract in August which means I get a new phone to play with. Can't seem to make up my mind between these 3 phones at the moment. Was helping you guys could shed some light on which is the best. Thx!
Based on my experience with a Samsung Galaxy S2 I would definitely say go with the S3. There is a huge factor though in my opinion... size. It will all depend on how it feels to you.
meessage
gaalaxy 3 will be the besst option.
Definitely the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Galaxy 3 is best
Gotta say the s3.
But the one x is a close second in my opinion.
If you don't want problems, get an iPhone.

If you like WP7 I would say the 900 but really though wait until august to make up your mind

Nexus S: Still worth getting?

HTC Thunderbolt user here. I have an upgrade with Verizon in the coming month, but I'm considering leaving my line on the family plan to a sibling and getting a GSM phone with tmobile bands. Would you guys say a used Nexus S is still a good buy, or should I just jumo to the Galaxy Nexus? Can't convince myself that both extending my contract and getting the gimped VZW GNex right now though. Anyway, if you could share your opinions, I'd appriciate it. Thank you.

Unless Google offers it at $350 also, probably priced out of what I can really afford. Though maybe it'd bring the GNex price down. Good advice. Oct/Nov is when my upgrade is anyway so I can decide then.
My 2 cents
The Nexus S is a fine phone, depending what you planning on doing with it. I would not recommend purchasing on a contract, but as an interim phone it should work great.
I personally found that I rarely used my phone as, you know, a phone and began resenting paying a high price for talk time I was barely using (Sprint). So I purchased a Nexus S off of ebay and use it strictly as a voip sourced phone using VOX over wifi.
To fill my need for a larger screen I picked up a Galaxy Tab (only $50) and use a 2 gig data plan with Verizon for $30/mo for when wifi not available as it comes with built in tethering. Though as an after thought I am wishing I went with the T Mobile 100/min and 5gig for $30/mo. The size of the Nexus S works in my particular case and easily upgrades to even JB so I am a happy flasher.
The Nexus S works great for a phone to have some fun while waiting for that next great thing, but might disappoint over the long haul against some of the current and upcoming monster phones.
If you're buying 2nd hand, I'd say GN is worth the extra 100$(€) difference.
Hi,
I had a Nexus S for years and, this phone ils absolutely perfect except two things.
No MHL compatibility: You can't put your screen phone on a TV or anything else..
No notification LED: I couldn't live without it after switching from x10 mini pro to Nexus S.
Last advice, if you get Nexus S, try installing SlimICS + Holo Launcher HD for a 2/3 day battery life by enabling the phone to only receive calls when the screen is off. (You can add things like sync every hours or such).
If you also want MHL, check for Samqung Galaxy S II.
It all depends on what you want. I like the size of the Nexus S. Its bigger than an iPhone, but way more portable than a Galaxy S3. The hardware is still decent. It runs JB just fine. Battery life is very good too.

Tmobile has been cheap and a definite carrier upgrade to ATT in my area.
I want real carrier and phone upgrades instead of incremental ones.
In your situation I'd wait for the Oct/Nov release to make the switch.
My Nexus S has been a 99.99% solid companion since it's release in 2010.
I've had power button issues randomly for the past week but the JRO03L update seems to have fixed it.
I've enjoyed carrier and handset stability that's noticeable compared to my friends.
I've watched my Verizon buddies complain about "normal" use killing charge ad nauseum.
I've listened to my Sprint buddies complain about absent ROM support for phones that drove them nuts.
My ATT buddies, well the service still seems to have the same call quality issues I had years ago.
Hopefully my next upgrade will serve me as long and as well until the next jump in carrier bandwidth becomes a must-have.
Mine is a champ. No plan to upgrade when my contract is up.

Not my plan to derail the thread, but you can use BLN technology to make the softkeys at the bottom flash or light up whenever you get a notification. Acts pretty much the same as a notification LED. Been available for over a year too.
It's okay unless you play vidya a lot on your phone.
No it's not worth getting now. It's a 2 year old phone and as good as it has been it's showing its age. It's struggling with the latest roms, very laggy and slow and battery performance isn't good. I'm rooted, running a nightly cache cleaner and occasional wipes and its still slow. Contract is up this week and its a toss up between the sgs3 and hox. Favoring the sgs3 on performance but the hox it's 5 quid cheaper every month. Not considering the nexus as I frankly find the nexus line boring.

wait a bit
I'm in the same boat as you and advise waiting a bit till this winter or spring to see how all the new hardware and prices shake out. quad core is the ideal android environment.
No. Ex-Nexus S user here. Just broke my phone a month ago and switched to a 2nd hand Galaxy Nexus. GNex is so much better, and it's not expensive either
Same here.. been using Nexus S.. and still going strong.. I just don't find it economical to change my phone every year or two.. Since I've bought my Nexus S.. it has been a good experience.. plus with all this mods.. I feel like my phone runs faster and smoother.. So I think still good for another year or so.. So if you can get Nexus S cheap.. get it! hehe
I would get a newer phone. The nexus s is outdated man; and plus google is going to release a new phone soon. We're going to be waay behind and things are just gonna get slower for us I think. No matter how many roms we flash to see if we can speed stuff up; its gonna get slower and slower. That's just how technology is; it gets faster and faster and if the older stuff cant keep up, it dies out
If you can find one under $100 get it now jelly bean really makes it fly

Nexus 4/Keep samsung s2/wait for new phone

I am thinking about getting the nexus 4, I have a samsugn galaxy s2 right now. My contract gets renewed in december for tmobile, you guys think any new amazing phones will be out by then? if so which? Maybe the s4?
December?? Defff newer and better phones will be out by then that's almost a year...
The s4 will be out by summer and possibly the nexus five by end of year??
But whose gonna wait that long and be stuck with an s2 lol
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
^Nothing's wrong with the S2. It's still more than adequate for all daily tasks and handles gaming fairly well.
I for one will be keeping to the nexus brand from now on. Coming from Samsung's and HTCs which have all had there faults, I've yet to find one with this device.
But I suppose it all comes down to what you prefer in device.
Personally if I was you I'd wait till the end of the year because newer phones will definitely be out. But if you can't wait, get the Nexus 4!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I had a Skyrocket prior to my Nexus 4 and I thought it was a good phone, then I when I got the Nexus 4 I was blasted with the speed and response but also because it had JB installed. After I installed JB on the Skyrocket I thought it was pretty snappy as well. That being said a dual core phone should still suffice your needs for now.
Q2/Q3 and after Google IO you will start seeing lotta phones coming out, based on Snapdragon 800, Tegra 4 and Exynos 5 Octa etc... There may be a Google X phone and then theres also the S4.
But even if you go ahead with the Nexus 4 its still a fast phone that will last you a while, when Key Lime Pie gets out it'll be even better. :good:
I had a Galaxy S2 before my Nexus 4, but by December the new Nexus will be out. I also saw that there are already a couple 4.2.2 roms for that phone! Developer support still seems pretty strong, and it's still a high end phone. If you can I would try to wait and just keep a good rom on it.

Coming from the sg2 as well, and have the death of the at&t weird sleep mode of death and just ordered the Nexus 4 last night contract is up in May/June but just going to switch sim card out and use the nexus 4 till something better comes along, if you have $300+ I feel that it is a big jump from the sg2 to the nexus 4, plus you will always have the latest android version, unlike the super delayed updates from att and samsung

Is the N4 worth buying at this time?

Hey all, been rocking a Galaxy Note for about six months or so after unloading an iphone. Very pleased with my Note...love the screen size...but have to admit it's large size can be a bit of a hindrance at times. Have been seriously considering switching to a Nexus 4 which is what I originally wanted but was back ordered for too long. Problem is I'm torn on picking up what I believe is a great phone versus waiting another 6 months for the Nexus 5. I know the SG4 and HTC One are coming soon, but I have to admit, I really want stock Android without all the extra features which I find useless. Basically, is the N4 still worth purchasing? Or is it a foolish move this late in the cycle?
Thanks!
Htc One, not a major inovation.
Galaxy S4- they ran out of ideas.
I think the Nexus is still worth it, especially now, when its price went down a bit.
I was actually in a close situation about 2 weeks ago. I was basically up to get a new phone and was looking around for what to get. I wanted the Nexus 4 since launch, but my impressions of AT&T (the only provider in my area that is GSM) weren't good and I wanted to stick with Verizon. After months of waiting, I finally narrowed it down to waiting for the Galaxy S4 and signing a contract with the (again, opinion) superior service provider Verizon or switching to AT&T and staying off-contract with the cheaper phone with comparable specs. There was also the possibility of waiting for the next Nexus to come out (Nexus 5?) when it does.
Well, I decided on the Nexus 4 on AT&T and haven't looked back. I couldn't be happier. As far as Nexus 4 vs Galaxy S4 and HTC One is concerned, I am more than happy with my decision. The hardware is amazing, but the main reasons I'm so happy is the vanilla Android and the community. I love how Google really doesn't care about rooting and modding (it's like 1 or 2 commands in a command window to unlock the bootloader, that's awesome). Then there are forums like this that help you with stuff. Yeah, there are Galaxy S3 sections and they are helpful, but I just feel that the Nexus 4 forums are....I dunno...more friendly? more helpful? I don't know how to put it, but I just like the community better.
Now on the debate of getting a Nexus 4 now or waiting for the next one to come out. I actually liked being 6 months into the release. That way, you avoid back-order issues, and everyone has had time to develop and fix issues with ROMs and whatnot. 6 months in, all you have to do is read a "Nexus 4 101" sticky thread and they have step by step instructions for completely customizing/flashing/etc. it. I will probably continue waiting 6 months after release to buy a new Nexus phone for those two reasons.
Well there's my two cents. Feel free to consider it.
Thanks guys. Appreciate the insights.
Johmama, sounds like we're in very similar situations. After giving up on the N4 and going with the Note a few months ago, I made the switch from Verizon to Straight Talk. While it's not perfect service, it's 1/3 the monthly bill which allows me to forgive the occasional issue. That also is why I'm strictly debating N4 vs. N5 now. The purchase price of the Nexus line makes it very affordable compared to $650+ for the other options. Basically, by the time I unload my Note and accessories, it should be a pretty even swap, so cost isn't an issue. Just wanted to know if the device is still considered a smart buy. Seems like most are more than happy with it, so I think I'll make the jump.
Again, thanks for the help.
I came from the DNA, and was planning on just keeping this till ONE is released, but I'm keeping it. Sure I miss the screen size a bit, but I love this phone and am thinking I'm only gonna be a Nexus guy from now on. Its worth it. Also having good dev support is way cool
