Decided to try a rooted NST again so I backed up my non-rooted image using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15115162&postcount=2.
Didn't like the rooted experience so I tried to restore using the instructions above, got as far as deleting all of the partitions. When I tried to restore the image using Win32diskimager I realised that my Win7 laptop was no longer reading the nook. I've tried other PCs but I've not had any look in getting any of them to recognise the NST.
So my NST is now stuck on Rooted Forever and is not recogised by my computer so I can't restore my backup. Any help would be appreciated.
Tried plugging it in to the laptop this morning and pressing the Power and n button together. The Rooted Forever went away, so the screen is now blank and the light that was previously showing only green turned to orange.
Continuous pressing of the Power button causes the light to turn green, screen to flash, then turn back orange. NST still not being recognised by the laptop however. Help?
I'm unclear on exactly what you did.
In any case, there is almost no reason to ever delete partitions on anything.
Put noogie on an SD. Insert SD. Boot. Connect on USB.
Use Win32DiskImager to write your backup onto the Nook.
Remove SD. Boot.
Thanks for your reply. I deleted the partitions because of
To restore your backup:
(Boot Nook with the noogie sd)
Run Partition Wizard and delete all partitions on your Nook. Careful in disk selection here, wiping the wrong drive could be catastrophic! This is required, because DiskImager won't write to a partitioned drive.
Okay I tried what you said. I'm seeing Removable Disk in My Computer but clicking it gives me Please insert a disk into Removable Disk. Win32diskimager is showing no devices.
Win32diskimager doesn't care at all what partitions are on your device.
It writes physical data onto a device.
How is it that the Window (File) Explorer is showing a drive letter and W32DI can't see it?
Is the Nook showing "Rooted Forever"?
I believe noogie does two mounts but the second one is inactive.
Check your desktop for all drive letters. Use "Disk Management".
Yes nook is showing Rooted Forever.
In Disk Management, I'm seeing 'Disk 1 Removable 1.83 Online' and it shows 1.83 Unallocated. And 'Disk 2 Removable (F No Media'. (F is the letter drive I'm seeing in Windows File Explorer.
Well, that's your problem, deleting the partitions stops Windows from recognizing it enough to give it a letter.
In disk management see if you can assign it a drive letter (on Disk1)
If you can't, do a quick format in disk management.
It doesn't matter what kind or how as long as you can assign a drive letter when you are done.
Yes, that was exactly the problem. Restored backup and it's up and running now.
Thanks for all the help, now I know what not to do lol.

I have built an SD bootable CM7 card as described by verygreen, but when I try to create folders on that drive from my PC (filled with APK files) I can't see them on the Nook. I have no problem doing this on my rooted emmc Nook, but when I boot to an SD card (that I am setting up for my daughter's Nook) I can't access any other folders/files.
What am I doing wrong? (The box is checked allowing Unknown Sources and I am currently running 177).
Are you connecting the nook via USB or putting the SD card in your computer directly?
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
The card is placed in a usb card reader (or a usd card reader), either one sees the files on the PC, but it will not find it on the nook. Even when I create a folder on the nook and move the disk over and copy a file into the new folder I can't see it on the nook.
You need to connect through the nook

This is because the partition the computer sees is the boot partition... to access it in the nook... either in terminal or adb shell:
1. mkdir /sdcard/boot
2. mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /sdcard/boot/
the items on the boot partition of the SD (including the folders and apks you put there) will be visible as /sdcard/boot
Pretty sure you'd have found it in the VG SASD thread and a few others... since I have posted this several times.
Thanks for the response. I'm not real familiar with ADB so I tried it with terminal and was able to create a directory but mounting gave me a 'permission denied' message.
(Sorry if this is old info, I've spent the morning combing the SASD thread and haven't found it yet, just too much info, thanks for taking the time to help some of us who are slower learners!)
Edit: learning slowly, used su to get into superuser (#) and made directory, but when I try to mount it says not found.

If you asked this question 2 weeks ago, I might able to give you the exact answer but since I wiped out the uSD CM7, I can't remember correctly what would happen.
However, based on my experience (+/- my memory loss), what you describe is all correct and that's what it is. Odd? Maybe, but don't panic.
Let's go slowly
when I try to create folders on that drive from my PC

you meant you created a folder in the "boot" partition on the uSD card?
a. if so, it's not recommended. Using the left over FAT32 partition instead
b. if so, try to use Root Folder app (it's a paid app) to access root folder (boot partition) directly on the NOOK. If you see the folder you created earlier, move it to the eMMC storage.
c. if not, pls tell us more
Yes, the SD card was accessed on my PC thru a USB adapter and a folder called 'APKs' was created in the boot sector. (I have also tried just adding the files into one of the other folders, but anything I add is invisible to the Nook).
So if I need to create a folder in other than the boot sector, I would need to use something like Easeus Partition Master to make that sector active and then create the folder and add appropriate files? (When I rooted my Nook directly to emmc it sure seemed a lot easier to access folders created by my PC.)
(Thanks again for all your help.)
That's much clearer, m8
Now, I think it's easier to get straighten.
1. From PC, using SD slot or usb-sd adapter, move (remove) the "APKs" folder off your NC to your PC, save it there, then eject the uSD off PC.
2. Insert the uSD into the NC and turn it on, make sure it boots into CM7 properly.
3. Wait until it completely load. Now using usb cable to connect the NC and the PC.
4. Watch the notification status bar on the NC, tap on it then turn on usb mass storage.
5. PC should recognize the NC and ready for use.
6. Move your "APKs" folder from PC into your uSD (it would probably named as CM7SDCARD)
Update: on item 6, I prefer to move the folder to the eMMC storage. I'm not 110% sure if the NC see "it" (it means the left-over FAT32 partition on the uSD card) or not, but I do believe, 99% it will.
Deleted folder on SD card (from PC) and verified reboot ok.
Connected USB cable to PC then to Nook, no notification bar comes up, but battery icon shows charging as well as the lighted n on the cable.
Tried to use Nook Tweaks to begin USB connection (both boxes checked).
Still no recognition from the PC that anything is connected.
Edit: I am using my rooted Nook to build this SD card for my daughter's new unrooted Nook and when I plug the rooted Nook into the PC I don't get any verification from the PC on it either. No change on the Nook either, just the charging light and icon indicator.

I don't have the NC with me now so I don't know what "both boxes" are and need to be checked or not.
The USB Settings from Nook Tweaks has a "USB Host Mode" (to enable host mode to connect peripherals) and an "External VBus" (to allow charging and hosting).
Both boxes were checked.
I've read that some of these issues can be caused by a faulty cable. If so, are there other alternatives to connecting thru the cable to open this up.
I have also tried the MiniTool partition program but I have not been successful in getting the active partition to 'stick' . (It immediately reverts back to the root being active after I apply the changes.)
You definitely have to UNCHECK the "USB Host Mode".
I'm not so sure with the "External VBus" status but suggest leave it by default.
With nothing checked in the Nook Tweaks section, USB cable connected to the Nook and then the PC, there is no recognition or acknowledgment that the Nook is there from the PC. (This is true whether I use my rooted version or try after booting to the sd card.)
If it is a cable problem, I will need to replace that, but aren't there other ways to make the sd card usable?
I've tried making the 4th partition action using Minitool and also Easeus but it didn't work. (Minitool just reverts back to boot partition active immediately after I apply the changes.)
Slow down, MiniTool and partitioning have nothing to do with this. Don't make more mess.
a. when plugging NC to PC, do you see any indication on the NC's status bar? like usb debugging?
b. when plugging NC to PC, do you see any indication on the PC (running Windows)? like removable drive?
There is no indication on the PC of any new connection.
The only indication on the Nook is the lighted n at the end of the cable and the recharging icon in the status bar.
Edit: the reason I was providing info on the MiniTools experience I was having is because my original question was how to access a folder (and files) created on my sd-bootable disk on my PC but the Nook can't see it. One way to accomplish this is to write the folder/apks directly to the Nook thru the USB cable. Other alternatives are to use windows to access it on my PC but I need to be able to access the 4th partition (if my reading of the various posts is correct). MiniTools and Easeus are two options that allow you to activate the 4th partition but it has not worked for my yet.
The USB cable connection problem appears to be there whether I boot to emmc or to sd.
Edit: I was able to find a non-nook cable (for my Blackberry) and using it my Nook recognizes when I connect to the PC and executes the USB Mass Storage Utility which allows me to turn USB storage on/off. Unfortunately the PC doesn't add any new logical drives in My Computer. The device manager shows 2 B&N Ereader Disk USB devices but with the yellow ! by them.
The 4th partition you mentioned about should be taken care during the installation, using verygreen's instructions, if you do correctly. There is ABSOLUTELY no need to mess around with MiniTool or the a-like.
Another question, have you turn on the USB Debugging feature? (I don't remember where, NC not with me now). If it not, check it box, try to plug in PC using usb cable again. I expect at least the usb debugging indicator will lit up.
I checked the debug feature (part of settings/applications/development/) and it was not checked. I checked it and now I get the robot icon (USB debugging conntected) and the USB icon to toggle storage on/off. Still nothing in My Computer and the drives shown in device manager are still yellow ! .
The device manager says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
I know it would be too early to say but I gonna to say anyway "congratulation".
When you see those icons on the NC status bar, it's 99% that it would work.
Now, back to the reality.
1. Connect usb cable between NC and PC running Windows
2. As you can see those icons, tap on the status bar to bring up then tap on "USB Mass Storage" (or something like "connect to computer for file/folder transfer, NOT the debugging). Read the warning then tap to enable USB connection
3. Now, pay attention on the PC, if it goes smoothly as expect, by now, you now can access both storages (eMMC and left-over of the uSD card) from PC. If so, move your "APKs" folder over.
I wish you luck
1- cable connected, icons on nook show up
2- tapping on status bar gives access to USB Mass Storage utility and option to turn on/off USB storage - with USB storage set to 'on' there is no recognition on the PC
Device manager shows two entries under disk drives for B&N Ebook Disk USB device but both are tagged with yellow ! (which a right click shows "This device cannot start. Code 10")
Is there something I need to do to download a usable driver for this?
(OBTW thank you for your help and patience)
Edit: within device manager I uninstalled the two drives (while the nook was still connected and USB active) and then had it search for new hardware. This time it loaded the drivers and NO yellow ! . At that point the PC recognized the drives and I have been able to create a folder that is accessible by the Nook and the PC. Thank you for help in this.
I have also contacted B&N and have a replacement cable on the way (which seemed to be a large part of my problems). Thanks Votinh for sticking with me while I got this resolved.
I tried to root my nook touch with both methods in this forum, but now I have the device locked on the screen "rooted forever."
before rooting my nook I made a backup copy, which is coming of 1,962,934,272 bytes, also the backup files and folders are written in strange symbols, there are no letters.
Then I formatted the sdcard and also the internal memory to the nook, and now when I connect to the pc nothing happens, everything stopped, all dead! (on windows)
I also tried with the image "nookrestore.img" but nothing.
When I insert the memory with an image loaded with win32imager I hold down the power button, the screen refresh and then nothing happens, no microsd does not turn off either.
How can I reflash the internal memory of the nook?
Please help me, I would not throw it after about 1 week!
I used an 8GB Class 4 microSD card and a reader.

Write Noogie.img to a SD card and boot your NST with that.
Then use the instructions found here to write your backup back to the NST (second half of the post)
Read and understand that post before continuing, then make sure you have the correct tools (MiniTool Partition Wizard & Roadkil's free DiskImager)

uh-oh .. I missed this part!
What method did you use to backup your NST?
For the above method to work your backup needs to be a image created with DiskImager. If you used some other method you're most likely hosed!
Hello, thanks for the help.
I did follow up jokala's tutorial and I used Roadkil's DiskImage 1.6.
I restored the backup on the memory nook properly, always with Roadkil's DiskImage 1.6, now when I connect the device to my PC (Windows 7 64bit) I can see a partition with "miniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition", the file system is "fat32 "Capacity = 1.83gb, used = 1.62 gb 214.31 mb = unused, type = primary, status = active, but the name of the partition is" k! € ° Å ¡Ã Â ³ aS {"
Is normal to have this label? and fat32 partition?
ps.
apparently with Windows 7 64-bit there is a bug that prevents the writing of 'file.img on usb device, error 5 sector 0 and I solved with this program

I formatted the microSD format, the image I wrote "noogie.img on microSD with" win32diskimager "rather than" DiskImage 1.6 ", because I could not write on the memory cards for the problem that I wrote in my previous post (" error # 5 ") and then placed in the nook, I connected the device to the PC and turned it on.
I've seen "rooted forever" on the screen of the computer nook and I created the file "backup.img" with "DiskImage 1.6".
This is the procedure I did, maybe I was wrong to use two different programs?
I'm reading that i can rebuild the partition table, and can be modified to have more storage space link.
I'm thinking of this solution, recreate the partitions and copy files and folders manually by an original copy of the operating system of the Nook, but I do not know what are the data that must be unique.
What are the data that I need to recover?
Moved to General, didn't seem development related.
SOLVED
Ok I was able to solve the problem, with the help of the indispensable Ros87, who reconstructed the image of my backups corrupted, without him I threw my nook.
summary:
In practice I have formatted the partition of the nook and my backup was corrupted, so when the device connected to the PC with the microsd "Noogie" nothing happened.
Solution:
I opened the nook (it is very easy to open it) and I disconnected the battery to make sure it was off, then I connected to the PC a couple of hours to charge the battery is discharged during the night of all, I do not know but because the day after my nook had completely drained the battery!
just connected to the PC (Windows 7 64bit) I have heard the typical sound that windows makes when you connect an external device, but I did not see the device in the Device / storage devices, but with "MiniTool Partition wizard" I saw the partition of the nook, so I deleted (with "MiniTool Partition Wizard") and followed the guide to restore the backup image on windows, in the end it was fine!
I'm happy!

Where the heck is the thanks button :X
Ok everyone, I've tried to do it on my own a number of times and am failing, please help.
I just got a new nook simple touch and am looking to back it up.
Doing a google search lead me to the Backup/Restore N2E post.
The instructions say to:
1. Boot nook with noogie.img : (the "Rooted Forever" screen) and connect to your computer via USB.
2. Use DiskImager to copy your Nook partition to a file, being sure to select "Physical Disk" in the drop down list.
Step 1 seemed to work, I used winimage and wrote nookie.img onto a sd card
I put the sd card in the nook, let it reboot and was greeted with the "Rooted Forever" screen but it just sits there...not sure if that's the first problem.
Step 2, using DiskImager, I'm suppose to select Physical Disk. The challenge I'm having is there are 0-7 Physical Disks! My confusion is that none of the sizes are the 1.82 partition I'm reading about. I can see a 239.98 and 120.08 but no other physical drive besides my regular disk drive.
Please advise!
I have spent over 8 hours yesterday researching, reading posts, trying to partition my SD card for an A500 with:
1. 2 Partitions
2. FAT32
3. Primary
I don't have an andriod phone so it is not an option to format it by connecting the phone to the computer. I have rooted my tablet and installed Titanium backup, android assistant, superuser and link2sd. The problem that I am having is the tablet is not recognizing either the first or second partition because it does not have a drive letter. When I assisgn it a drive letter and set up all the specs listed above and click apply, the program tells me it has successfully completed but then immediately replaces the second primary partition drive letter with an *. From my hours of reading yesterday I understand that my computer does not recognize a second primary partition so therefore replaces the drive letter with an *. I have tried mini tool partition wizard and easeus and both produce the same results. PLEASE HELP. Thanks in advance
i'm fairly sure your card MUST be formatted using android....
u could try SDformatter but it didnt work for me,
not sure if it can be done thru linux, maybe someone who knows more about these things can advise you
what is it you are trying to achieve with the 2 partitions - there maybe other options available to you
I'm so desperate because I deleted the partitions from my nook with these instructions :
---you can google it and the first link it is--->> "how-to-backup-and-restore-nook-glow-and-nook-simple-touch"
So... I think my backup wasn't well written :S or something like that.
When I deleted the partitions, EVERYTHING went to hell... My nook is actually freeze, my computer doesn't recognize it at all when I plug the cable. My nook just turn the tiny light on, what means it is charging.
---------->Now, my doubt is: is there any hope to my case? how can I fix it? )= how can i make my lap recognizes the nook reader?
Is there any backup file to write on a sd card?
I press the button to turn it on but anything happens.
I've tried nookmanager(this one couldn't make a restore backup nor factory.zip) and the "alpha format touch" (this one tells there's a lack o "log", and a few more files.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
So if you followed those directions you should have ended up with a file on your desktop about 1.9 gigabytes, right?
(If you have a DVD burner, burn that to a DVD, it will make me feel better.)
Why, oh, why do people delete partitions?
You still have the SD card with the Noogie on it, right?
That will still boot up saying "Rooted Forever"?
Now use WinImage (or whatever you used) to write the image back to the Nook.

YES, I hvae the noogie in my sdcard
I also have my file with 1.8gb but i've tried to write it on the sd card but I don't know what happened, it seems like the file was empty :S because when I put the sd card into the nook and try to turn it on the screen still says:" Rooted for ever", even if I press the button a few seconds (maybe 30 seconds)
If I try to open the 1.8gb file with winimage, there's something like the image
it takes more?
You don't write your 1.9 GB file to an SD card, you write it to the Nook internal memory.
With the Nook booted up on the SD card with Noogie, connect USB and use your utility to copy the 1.9 GB to the Nook.
What you showed in your snapshot does not look promising.
You might have done the backup after the Nook was trashed or else corrupted the backup.
Be careful with that 1.9 GB file, you do not want to lose it.

Thank you for your advice.
Maybe you are right: I didn't create the backup img. as it should be.
Now, i'm wondering if there anybody who wants to share a backup image from a "good" nook and mail it me.
Do you know someone ? T___T Please!!, I'd really appreciate it!
You really don't want to use an image from another device as are there are device specific things on the image. Slow down and don't be in a hurry to find another image yet. You might not be in as bad of shape as you think. 1.8GB is the right size for a backup so you may be OK. As Renate said - DON'T LOSE IT.
Now a couple of things. You said you wrote the image to the SD card and rebooted the device with the SD card in the device. As Renate pointed out this isn't how you restore. And once you finish restoring you reboot without the SD card in the device - if you've got a Noogie card in the device it will always boot the Rooted Forever.
I question whether the WinImage screen shot you posted is actually from your backup. With the size partitions its showing a 1.8GB image file seems quite a bit on the small side. In any event it can't hurt at this point to try a proper restore to the Nook and see if it works. Have you followed the instructions on the page you poitned to to restore your backup:
3. Plug your Nook into your computer with the USB cable.
4. ... instructions on deleting partitions... You already did this, no need to do it again
5. To restore, open Roadkil’s DiskImage software. Use the “Write Image” tab this time and select the Nook Drive from the drop-down list. Select the source file, the backup image you created earlier, and hit start to restore.
6. When the restore is finished, you can disconnect your Nook from the computer and remove the noogie microSD card and reboot.
Try it and report back.
Actually I realy want a nook backup, another backup ( I think there's not another worst thing than this one =s ), because I've tried lots of times the steps you have described and dont work. Actualy my pc doesn't recognize when I plug the nook in.
**When I do the step #5 my nook doesn't response, just appears the well known image: "rooted for ever", but does not turn on, even if I press the button for a long time**
Please, I think I really need another backup image )=
Well, I hope your advice.
