Coating on front screen fault - Galaxy S III General

Had my s3 for ONE day. Noticed that the olephobic or similar coating on it is wearing off. Under my breath it looks like a million scratches the screen. Was really nice to start with. Now it has the feeling of a dirty screen protector on there now. Really not happy. Going to return tomorrow hoping it's just my model

Hmmmm havent heard that also samsung never make defective products it probably just yours good luck

Just to be safe suggest you first confirm it's not some soiling residue. Try this: put a few drops of water onto screen and a minuscule amount of dishwashing detergent onto your finger, then use finger to spread around until water beads evenly across whole screen. Wipe off with paper towel. Repeat as needed. Fingers crossed ...

No was definatly a bad one, it had the same sort of feel as a non apple replacement screen i had on my iphone. Under my breath was horrible scratch mark like lines after a lot of cleaning. Almost like i took the coating off is the only waybi can explain! Two days after use of my replacent s3 and still like new and silky smooth touch wood

weird scuff or something under glass?

I've noticed 4 distinct 'scuffs' or 'stains' that appear to be under my glass. I don't know how else to describe them. I didn't notice them when I first got the phone, but you can only see them at a good angle where there's no glare, so the may have always been there. Now I can't *not* notice them. I'll try to post a picture tonight, it's a bit hard to photograph. I think if someone has it they would know what I'm talking about...
Does it kind of look like a gel substance underneath the glass?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Hmmm maybe.. if I took a micro-drop of gel or glue and pressed it.... i'll try to post a pic later tonight.
its the oleophobic coating peeling off i think
Okay here are two pics of two of these things. I have four of them. I scratch and rub them and nothing, as if they are just beneath the surface...
From what I'm seeing it just looks like a scuff or scratch. I had a palm pixie before and it had the same markings on it.. Idk what it is.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I had something similar on my previous Nexus S. I think it's made from steam settling under glass.
I am on my second handset (Sprint) San Antonio, TX and both have had screen issues... I did notice something quite similar to your issue on my current handset but mine resides closer to the ear piece and camera... besides that I'm also experiencing the keyboard ghosting issue very visible when I open my notification menu.... I'm kinda hesitant to get a replacement since thus far my screens issues have only doubled ...

He is correct, mine is doing the same thing. Look at it this way, at least the top of your screen isn't separating, mine flexes'and'goes up and down under minimal pressure and makes all kinds of noise, its weird.

I think this seems to be the most likely scenario from my google research and comparison of other pics. Ugh. Hopefully it won't get worse. What's the replacement/repair policy? Call Samsung or take it to Best Buy ? It's been over 30 days.
Definitely not scuff marks, I keep the thing in a sock and treat it like gold.
I am currently on hold waiting for a rep at Samsung.....it has been 1 hour and 45 minutes and I have not talked to anyone... so if calling Samsung is what you opt to do ... get yourself a samwich and a six pack before hand!!
So I finally got through to a rep.... and they said...
JK... I gave up after 5 hour hold.(seriously) ...and decided the issue was minimal at this point

I have similar problems, except it'll only show if I breath moist air on to it. If you cover it up with a decent screen protector, it should go away unless the mark is really deep.

SGS3 not so fragile

Just wanted to say that I've noticed a lot of posts saying how fragile the SGS3 is, now I don't know if I'm lucky or if those who's s3s have broken are just unlucky but I've had an awful lot of accidents with mine the past few weeks, including dropping it on hard concrete from my ear (about 5 foot 9 inches) a few times, dropping it down the stairs, dropping it onto a bedside lamp that I'd places in the floor during a sort out (my S3 actually smashed the lamp stand lol).
The only problem with my S3 is 2 small scratches on the bezel.
So is the S3 so fragile afterall or am I just lucky?

I agree, this thing is hardcore. I went to sit in my friends car, as I was sitting I was closing the door and my phone fell out of my pocket and shut the phone in the door. I was wtf just happened. Then the phone fell to the ground when I opened the door. The stock battery got twisted and battery cover was scratched. I turned it on everything worked, no scratches on the screen. Two hours later my case came in the mail. I ended up buying two qcell batteries from Amazon.com. I was able to straighten the battery out a bit. That thing still works...
I don't think you're lucky, just a really nice device...

I don't see any posts about how sturdy it is so I assumed it was extremely fragile

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823328
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704533
I have never thought a mobile phone may survive from several feet falling, but I would not expect my phone cover material crack after several months usage. I have noticed that these posts have been started a month ago, and not seen so much post complaint the same issue. Just hope it is only some sort of manufacture defect batch, otherwise this is major headache for Samsung according to the production size of Galaxy S3.
Well I am liable for a direct exchange via courier anytime I want as long as I only do it once, so I'm waiting until I find the right case and screen protector for me then I'll do the exchange and have a scratch-free phone.
I also have a few small scratches on the screen that were caused by sand when I was on holiday.

After seeing how much Apple are paying for witnesses, I wouldn't be surprised if they pay people to make the GS3 look bad in forums. Or I wouldn't put it past HTC One X fans doing it voluntarily for free.

why am I seeing so many cracked screens on ebay and among friends?
I'm just curious, because I am considering getting a GS3 and I have seen firsthand quite a few with cracked up screens, not quite as bad and the iphone folks, but I don't want to get another phone that is going to break on me without even dropping it.
I was walking out to roll up my windows and went to put my phone, without the case on it, in my shirt pocket and I missed the pocket and there it went.. smacked the concrete landing on I believe the top right corner and mostly the back side.. The back battery cover is all scratched up but no big deal.. I immediately put my otterbox commuter case on it like I should have had on anyways.. now believe it or not, I used it the rest of that day and till about 3pm the next day and I was just scrolling down my Facebook news feed when I felt my phone click.. I started looking at it like whaattt? Well, whataya know? My screen I guess finally gave in and a crack formed across the upper right quarter of the screen. From the LED Indicator to the Power Button.. The Digitiser and LED seem ok though. Just seemed odd to crack like that kind of outta nowhere like it did. Maybe my case caused some pressure on my weakened screen after dropping it and the screen just gave up? I've seen things like that happen before but not like this.

I guess you've all been kinda lucky by now...
I've dropped mine 4 times from my pocket onto concrete and can't count the times I've fell asleep and dropped it out my hand and all I've got is a few scratches on the $4 TPU case.
I'm not sure if anyone else does this, but if you're agile enough, try to get your foot under the phone before it hits the ground to cushion the blow... I know I've saved the phone on quite a few occasions by doing this!

Lost some repect for my GN10.1

I dropped my tabby lightly today (something that Doesn't happen). despite it being in a case, I managed to scratch the corner up pretty nasty and unclip the clips holding the back plate in the corner. Wow.
A few minutes later totally unrelated (I hope), I felt that the center of my screen very warm. I took off the case to check the temperature in the back, behind the case where it cant ventilate and Wow! it's running hot! mostly Under the ffc and close to the left side of the tablet holding it landscape. I wasn't even doing anything heavy.
So yeah. I love this thing but I gotta say. I hate the choice of materials here Samsung, Plastic just isn't right for a 500 $ flagship. I gotta say, I'm pretty amazed with the gps on this thing though. .. I know it wouldn't be possible without the plastic construction. I gotta wonder why the compass is so bad though.
Anyway, thats my rant for the day. enjoy.

If it were a metal back that's tightly bonded to the frame your post would be about how easily the screen cracks. My OG G-Tab 10.1 got run over by an "excuse the cart" after it fell out of my briefcase at DFW airport. It survived unscathed. You spin the wheel and take your chances.

I wouldn't have another metal one. They don't give for the screen and moreover, just check how poor wifi and gps signals are on tablets that are made of all metal... such as the TF201... or even more famous tablets...
Well how about wood? Jk idk.. maybe thicker plastic, or a metal structure/bezel with plastic for the back. The iPad feels pretty solid though so idk if metal is always bad.

Well from what I understand though I am not an expert on this the plastic material is better then metals on Ipad as it can absorb most of the shock bot none the less because of the weight of the tablet you will damage it no matter how lightly it is dropped but that said I have a micromax tablet which has been droped kicked around by my sisters kids to an extent where the casing has cracked but tablet is still running
I sugguest you look at rubber casing because they have the tendency to absorb shock more then anything else only draw back they do not look fancy

once and forever: Samsung devices are cased in polycarbonate and not plastic !!!!!! And this material is used in aircraft and space engineering, it is light and robust and exceeds cheap aluminum in most parameters !!!!!!

I do not know how you define plastic, but that sounds like plastic. It is the other way around. We are flying in plastic planes . And I do not think that planes are built out of the same polycarbonates than this tablet. That is far too simplistic.

For sure the note 10.1 feels like the cheapest device I have ever got , (in materials and build quality) specially the back blue plastic cover, but if it wasn't made like this it would have been allot heavier and very expensive so get a silicon case or something for it, forget about its build quality and enjoy the real power underhood

This phone can take abuse!!

I did it, I confess. I've cracked my rear glass panel on my Z.
I was taking a picture out of my bedroom window of the sunset the other night, I have these door style windows that open on hinges sideways, well, it suddenly blew shut and dropped the phone.
It bounced down the sloping bit of roof, hit the patio and bounced around 4ft high before planting itself into the bird feeder at high speed.
All I can say is my heart literally stopped. I expected nothing left of it. BUT the screen isn't even scratched, theres barely a mark on the body and the crack on the back is about 5 or 6mm long running around the corner on the bottom left.

He would disagree but the amount of times he says 'against the Samsung--' goes to show... Although he has made fun of the Samsung before, at least.
I think he was surprised by the Beer Boot Test, going on to recommend it.
My friend has dropped his a couple of times onto a thin carpet (sitting on tiles) and it hasn't cracked, but he did get a rubberized case for it.
Dropped mine on ceramic tiles, a thin mat on ceramic tiles and onto ceramic tiles bouncing out the door onto concrete steps...No scratches on the glass or the side strips...the housing on the other hand a few chips and scratches at 2 of the corners...nothing to complain about.
Dropped it twice from a pretty high table. No cracks, no scratches nothing. Sony is incredible in manufacturing their devices, but their software is still wacky.

The loss of the sony logo is OK looks better... I tried SPG glas-t and after i cut myself with it i removed... now i have Screen Knight film. Don't want to make advert but is good, feels a bit rubbery and flexible. It gives a good protection due its flexibility. Top of that is adds a bit of thickness to the back so your phone no longer sits on its edges rather sits on its back. LESS SLIPPY :victory:

Though the iPhone 5S is not that bad still it'snote 3 we trust! Strong, beautiful, durable, functional, feature-packed, fun, more than a companion, affordable and above all, the hope to smart phone evolution especially the note series.

The 5S is laughable at best. "In Note we Trust".; I dropped mine corner first. Pretty nasty fall and was expecting a shattered screen but ended up with a bent bezel and that's it.

it seems to scratch very easily though in my opinion, already have some little scuff up marks from being in my pocket.

and ......... the oleophobic coating wears off too.
I couldn't even think of using my $750 device without a screen protector. insane!
I got the 9H, it's like a second screen. I can take it off in two years and my flawless OE screen will command high $$$

What baffles me about this new glass as it seems to scratch very easily though in my opinion, already have some little scuff up marks from being in my pocket.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Seems like only yesterday, everyone blindly thought iPhone was the best thing since color screens. Now I think more and more people are realizing that premium materials do not always equal the highest durability. Note 3 FTW!!!!!
No I'm not happy to see you, it's just a Note 3 in my pocket....
I slipped in the snow and my note 3 went flying.Funny but it didn't break I thought for sure I'd have cracked screen, the back for scraps on it and the corner. But wow my heart stopped for a second

You know what..your exactly right.....So strange you say that..I Actually have a small section on my screen where it looks like a scuff mark..I took a magnifying glass and looked more closely and it looks like the coating is gone?? Wth lol...Called at&t and getting a replacement and ordered a tempered glass .3 thick one iff ebay..ordered 2 incase I mess it up..they were 15 a piece putting them my replacement phone soon as it arrives..
I'm glad that the phone is holding up pretty well in tests, but I'm still definitely not taking the risk of not having a case on it. My note 2 dropped from below pocket height onto asphalt for me, not even face first, and spiderwebbed completely, even taking away lots of touch sensitivity. Not risking that again!
Reminds me of the old yellow and black Nextel we used to dent the walls with to show how tough it was, One of the techs actually heaved it through 2 thickness of 5/8" sheet rock. The battery cover popped off and the battery fell out. But as John Cameron Swayze used to say, it kept on ticking.
Dropped mine one foot. Hairline crack. I am now a gorilla glass non-believer.

They could say the freakin screen is made of highly reflective aircraft aluminum. Don't make a difference to me! I'm still putting a case and screen protector on it! I'm using the moshi visor xt. It was what the att store had the morning it came out. It's a nice screen protector but it itself scratches and scuffs. However when the screen is on you can't see any of them. I love my big HD display! Until the time comes that the screens are indestructible I will be protecting mine!

I agree....Like I said above for some reason these screens scuff so easy it's almost like a coating comes off (happened to me) I ended up sending it back for another one and soon as it came I instantly threw on a Tempered Glass off ebay for 16 bucks....and put it on in a steamed room like they say...And sure enough its dust free..and the glass protector feels so smooth and no loss in touch responsiness even with spen, Good idea to grab a Tempered Glass protector...helps alot
I've broken both the Note 2 and Note 3! Guess I'm just unlucky.
