[Q] Is there a way to make the ticker work? - Continuum General

With the original tw launcher whenever you're using an app or game *for example Angry Birds* and you receive a call it shows up on the ticker. But when I use another Launcher *for example Go Launcher* and I play Angry Birds and I receive a call not only does it not show up in the ticker but it stops the game and the screen changes and shows me who's calling. is there a way to make the calls be show on the ticker while on Go launcher and using an app?

I've been looking at that, off and on,
For the last three months, with no headway. Trailblazer looked, and says its hard baked into tw. If it can be ported to go, I haven't figured it out, yet.

Hmm.. Well whenever you have two themes installed *For example Launcher 7 and TwLauncher and you haven't yet decided which to choose as default* the apps show the call in the ticker. But then let's just say I decide to use Launcher 7 as my default, then it stops working and the screen changes to the call. That confuses me.

I've posted on this topic before somewhere on this forum, but don't remember where.
The Touchwiz launcher has to be running for incoming calls to come to the ticker. I, too, find this feature indispensable on our phones.
I use LauncherPro. I have created an invisible shortcut to an "activity" that launchers Touchwiz launcher after I've rebooted my phone. Touchwiz comes up, I hit my home button and LauncherPro comes right back up. I never see Touchwiz again, but the service necessary to send incoming calls to the Ticker continues to run until I restart my phone again.
I tried GoLauncher but went back to LauncherPro. I can't remember why I did, but it might have been because I was unable to make a shortcut to launch Touchwiz. I don't remember.
So, I just have to remember to launch the shortcut anytime I've restarted my phone, and I'm good.
Touchwiz doesn't show up in the normal app list, so I needed the more granular set of options that "Activities" in LauncherPro provided.

I recall that work around. For me, it made the phone sluggish. But, that was also on a 07, which was a leak. Maybe it would work better with 09. I might give that a try again, and see what happens. I'd still like to come up with something that is more native, if I can eventually figure it out. But, for now, that is probably the best we have.

Yeah, I have no doubt that the majority of my complaints about Trailblazer101's mods making my homescreen respawn all the time were related to running two launchers simultaneously....although I'm fairly sure I tried NOT loading up TW and I still had incessant homescreen respawns.
It was your suggestion, that finally solved all of my life's problems. Using Rom Toolbox to cut out all kind of unnecessary crap running virtually eliminated my respawn issue altogether.
I think my phone runs excellently now...even with TW running in the background.
But don't let that deter you. I'd LOVE to find a way to launch minimal software for the ticker-incoming call feature as opposed to running TW fully.

Stock / ADW or Helix

Ok so I am a great fiddler and pusher of buttons but I am not good on the techy side so I am asking...
1) Which one is best - ADW or Helix
2) Does your phone have to be rooted
3) If I don't like it, can I switch back to the SE stock one
4) Is it easy.... can I mess it up!?!
I have looked around at various threads but they mostly seem to be on rooted phones. I have watched Youtube videos demonstrating them both and they look pretty cool. So basically I just wanted some reassurance before I go off and jump into something a bit out of my depth.
Thanks!!
I prefer Helix, your phone doesn't have to be rooted for either, you can install it side by side with the stock launcher and switch between them and they're installed just like anything else so you can't really screw it up.
ADW has more features and is generally better but it force closes too much and tends to stuff up the quick settings widget after watching a divx movie - I have to reboot phone to get it to function again.
Helix is good but when you enter the app drawer you have to press the home button if you want to exit the app drawer as it doesn't have a virtual home key.
I use the stock home launcher as its the smoothest and least bug ridden.
Both Helix and ADW allow you to select the number of homescreens from 2 - 7, the stock one only has 3.
ADW for me. Give all 3 a try, but it's really down to personal preference. Install all 3 along with Home Switcher and try them out to see what suits you best.
ADW as it's better than Helix. But then again it's a personal preference

I prefer ADW. I used to use helix but swapped. I went to go back to the stock home but then I remembered that there is no option to have five rows instead of four. I find five rows better because I can fit everything I need onto the screen
I have no idea if helix can do that though.
That is also personal preference though as not everyone would want that extra row
Thanks for the replies guys. Think I will be doing some downloading tomorrow and playing around - I don't think my head is in the right place tonight. Thanks for the info on the Home Switcher too.
Basically I was looking for the extra number of screens so I can sort out my apps/widgets rather than just having it all in the app drawer and having to scroll thru. Does that sound lame!? Or maybe just a bit OCD.
I like the ability to view all your screens in miniature then quick select which one you want (its one of the things I liked about the HTC Desire when I was trying to choose but it was brown and ugly so X10 won).
Edit... OMG there are loads of different themes for ADW too. Choices, choices!
I used ADW for week then switched to Stock SE. I had issue with ADW it is not that smooth while scrolling program. I have swipe couple of time to get page swipe
Ok so I had a glass of wine, cleared my head and bit the bullet and downloaded ADW and Home Switcher.
Can't get the sense ui thing to work. Don't know what I am doing wrong... any clues?
You need to go into system preferences and bind the home button to previews.
Also, make sure sense previews are active under previews settings.

Oh for goodness sake, its sooo simple when you know how! I had the Ui sense ticked but hadn't done the home button thing.
Thank you so much for the quick response.
No problem my friend.
Swyped from my rooted X10i using Tapatalk.
Just discovered another way... just long press the little desktop dots and it gives you the preview screens. So now I can have my home button set to my default screen.
I think I need to get a life... been playing with this since I got home from work (altho I did manage to heat a ready meal up for the hubby!!) but I am loving it so far.
Just got Beautiful Widget too and skinned that.... well actually I've done about 6 different permutations of clock and weather but I am now happy.
Thanks for the support today, I wouldn't have taken the plunge without you!
ADW all the way - tried Helix - and it was good - went for ADW - which I didn't like at first - but that was because I didn't know what I was doing... once I'd switch the Samsung app drawer off and sussed out the settings I needed then I quickly reaslised that ADW is in fact the dogs b011ocks!!..
Adw does rock.
Swyped from my rooted X10i using Tapatalk.
And everyone complains abouit ADW force closing yet I have never had it force close on me...and I have never had any problems with the widgets either.
is it me, but i cant find helix on the market, or do you hav the be rooted ?
You are not wrong... I couldn't find it either. Glad I plumped for ADW first then!
Edit.... try herehttp://helixproject.ruqqq.sg/

Me too, until I disabled the "Horizontal Drawer" setting, never had an issue since.
ive tried all of them. if you want to switch between the ones you have all you have to do is not select "use by default" and when you press the home button it will let you choose between them. thats what i did until i figured out that i liked ADW more.
like everyone says just take off the horizontal scrolling for apps and you will be fine.
i also like you you can have 2 apps next to home that are always on the screen and i like you you can customize them to what ever apps you want by dragging the apps there.
as for the force close thing, its only happened to me once but it went away after a newer version of it came out.

changing the bottom dock

ok, i have an evo now, LOVVEE IT, but also looking at picking up an epic and giving evo to gf. but the one biggest thing thats killing me on the epic is not being able to customize the bottom dock, i dont use messaging, i use google voice and would need that at the bottom.
is their any way to change those icons? (WITHOUT USING ANOTHER LAUNCHER, I like the touchwiz UI, and dont wanna use adw or launcherpro etc...)
I heard this feature was removed from the current UI. Apparently there were some problems with touchwiz 3.0, and they removed a few features to get rid of a few of the bugs..
Touchwiz on the epic is essentially stripped down compared to the Vibrant and captivate... although this may change with the 2.2 update..
so it doesnt have ANY way? not even with root? ah. that kills it for me, i dont even touch the messaging app, idk the last time i did...
I'm just curious why not use the messaging app las time i tried google voice it was too slow.
well i have multiple phones and GV is PERFECT for it, and yeah GV used to be HORRIBLE, but now they have push sms, so its pretty instant, and i cant text from my pc etc... the ONLY downside to gv is no mms yet. idk i just REALLY dont want a app on a dock that im never gonna touch..
I love my evo very good, no problems, honestly the draw to the epic for me is the touchwiz fetures, not so much the UI itsself, but the unique features. the speed and the screen.
just not sure if its worth going from an evo to epic
Touchwiz 3.0 does not support landscape thats why they used 2.5. You may be able to change this later on if a developer can port touchwiz 3.0 but then you would not have landscape support in touchwiz.
This is the 4th thread about this exact issue
Solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770529
Just download Handcent. When you hit the messaging icon at the bottom it will ask you if you want to use the stock app or Handcent (then you can check - remember this choice). Now whenever you hit the SMS icon (it will still appear to be the same...). It will open Handcent.
Click to collapse
This might work for the other buttons as well, if you clear the defaults in said applications. That is done under the Settings > Applications, find the app and hit the "Clear Defaults" button.
How does using Handcent fix anything for those of us that want the bottom dock button to launch Google Voice?
Did you read the question?
Use launcher pro, u can add and remove icons/programs from the dock

[Q] First time using EB01 SC 2.4 and have some questions

Just flashed SC 2.4 voodoo rom and have some questions about it.
1. how do you delete the home screen? (I have 7 home screens now.. which is too many for me)
2. When I turn on Camera, it says update firmware. do I have to update firmware?
3. how can you customize shortcut on the bottom (a grey box that have call, app list, browser icon)? sry its kinda similar question as #1.
4. What kind of launcher does Superclean rom use? when i see task manager, icon looks like Touchwiz.. but overall interface and app list look like ADW.. but doesnt have ADW options though.. I'm confused.
I thought I had more questions but I forgot
I will edit this post if I think of more.

1,3, 4: its pretty much the stock aosp launcher, so any kind of home screen customization is out of the question unless you get something else like launcher pro/adw. Its called launcher2, I believe, taken straight from aosp source. So, if you want to change stuff, you're going to have to look at other launchers.
2. Yes.
And if you're looking for alot of customiziation options along with neat transitions built in...try launcher pro. I've been using it for years on different androids and love it.

you mean I can't even set numbers of home screen with 'launcher2'?? thats not good..
what does aosp stand for?
If I use launcher pro or adw, stock launcher will be running in background? running 2 launchers will consume more battery and RAM?
2 launchers won't affect you that much. I used to run LPro and Twiz back on DI01 and could get 24-48 hours of bat life.
From what I have read on other posts just make sure that there are no widgets running on the unused launcher, as they might sitll be using the data connection to update.
AOSP is android open source project.

Personally I recommend Lancher Pro over ADW, but I'm sure others will tell you differently. Free versions of both exists so just try em both out.
Full Battery Popup
I didn't know where to post this but I downloaded the new superclean 2.4, and despite it including a program that should have disabled it, I still got a pop-up notifying me of my full battery in the middle of the night. Does anyone know why I got this or does the full battery popup disable not work for all phones?
If you don't like having two launchers and want more customization options, install Launcher pro and uninstall Launcher ebproductions. I use nothing but LP, none of the other launchers can cut it for me.

Did you wipe prior flashing?
And launcher pro is imho the best hands down. Try the trial and if you like it pay for the full. The twitter and facebook widgets are the best of any out there...bar none.
go launcher
re jenisiz - I used rom manager and always back up previous rom and wipe data but i did not try to do it myself in cwm but now that you mention it I will give it a shot
re triple486 - Launchers make all the difference. I have tried just about everything I could find and I personally liked Go Launcher. Launcher Pro is cool but i would say it is 100 times better for the pay version. You can resize widgets to your liking and there is a lot of support for theming the Launcher Pro widgets. Overall, any launcher seems like it offers more flexibility and features than the stock or aosp launcher. Try the free versions and see what you like.
Battery pop up still there
I cleared all data and the cache twice but the full battery popup is still there.
I did not mention this but i installed the Revolution theme over superclean 2.4. Will that prevent the battery popup from being disabled?

Yeah, the only cool thing about the stock AOSP launcher is the 3D app drawer, LauncherPro does this as well but it's not quite as good.
Once LauncherPro/ADW is installed and running, you can use the task manager to kill the other launcher so it's not running in the background.
Press your home key and set the default to LauncherPro/ADW and it will use these by default from then on and the other launchers will not run.
I personally use Launcher Pro on all my android devices and I always recommend it over ADW but they're both good and its just a matter of personal preference, you can install both and try them - it wont hurt anything and they hardly take up any space.
If you set one as a default and want to change the default again go to settings > applications > manage applications - find the launcher you set as a default, and click "Clear Defaults".

Touchwiz

I will probably have posters coming after me with torches & pitchforks for this. I keep seeing all these negative posts about touchwiz. I guess I'm too much of a noob to see why. I've tried other launchers like Launcher Pro, GoLauncher and even the stock froyo launcher and I keep going back to TW. Mainly it's because I miss some of the widgets that only work on TW. Can anyone give me some examples of things to look for that can show why it's so disliked?
Also if I do switch launchers, the one I'm running always shows up as a running program in Task Manager. Is there a way to get TM to ignore what launcher is set as your default?

The reason I abandoned Touchwiz is not because I disliked the UI design (I really like it in fact...very clean), but rather the background scrolling was acting up. In other words, unless I had a particular Samsung widget on one of my screens, the background wallpaper would not scroll back to the correct position when pressed the home button. It would snap back only after I touched the screen again. Even when it did scroll back when it was supposed to, it was sort of laggy. This was happening right out of the box. Anyway, I switched to Launcher Pro and and homescreen scrolling is as smooth as can be with no lag at all.
There is nothing inherently "wrong" with TouchWiz, and there are in fact a good number of people who like it and continue to use it. I'm not one of them, simply because I feel my phone runs faster -- and I prefer the widgets -- with LauncherPro.
But that's just my opinion. This same sort of thread gets re-created every couple of weeks, and the bottom line continues to be this: if you like TouchWiz, use it. If you don't like it, don't use it.
That's why Android's so great -- you can make that choice for yourself.
I actually think TW is really nice and clean looking, and would probably have stuck with it if it offered slightly more comparability.
For me, the 4 icon dock is just too big, and I like to have 5 icons down there (phone, contacts, app drawer, e-mail, web). That and you can't do custom shortcuts on the home screens. ADW was free, and offered solutions to these issues, plus, with ADW you can backup your home screen and UI settings, so whenever I flash a new rom, I just install ADW, restore my settings and I'm back to how I like it.
But every time I reflash a stock rom, I do miss how clean TW is.

Launcher Crash

I've been having problems for a while now, but the issue is that all the apps and widgets disappear from my home screen. It happens when I go to my screen with my email, browser, and calendar widgets on it. If I try to swipe to another screen, the widgets stay where they are and flash, but nothing from the next screen appears. The problem persists when I lock and unlock the tablet. If I rotate the screen, the apps and widgets go away, but my wallpaper remains. I can still press the buttons on the status bar and switch to different apps, but can't open new ones unless I open acer ring and search for them, or open them through settings. I did a bit of poking around and all I've determined the issue is a result of the Launcher crashing. If I do a force stop in settings and then return home, everything is back to normal, unless I go to the page with the widgets on it then i'm screwed again.
Any help?
Running RE-FLEXxx Rev 4 and V8 BL, but I noticed problems after updating to the ICS bootloader.
Have you tried other launchers? Nova is a good option. I use GoLauncherHD for tabs. Try a different launcher and see if it makes a difference.
Went with GoLauncher. I tried it a while ago and liked it, but reverted once I started using more roms. Seems to be working well so far, but I'd still like to know what the original issue was. Or a solution.
Welcome to the club.
Well, you're not the only one. It seems to be an issue with the ICS bootloader (Any flavor. Modified or stock.). If it gets too annoying you can remove scrollable widgets like the gmail and browser widget from your home and that will help. It's quite rare from what I understand. Not many people are having the problem besides a few of us. I think the solution will have to come from Acer... if it comes at all. What would be nice is if there was a searchable term for this. It really needs an acronym... SOF (screen of flashiness) maybe??? Anybody?
Problem persists with go launcher, although the flashiness is much more... interesting. Is FOD taken? Gotta have death in there somewhere.
I like "LOD"... Launcher of Death.
Welcome to third party launchers for tablets
Do you have any idea where the issue is? Is it in the launcher, or is it just the one that gets screwed up? And how does the boot loader effect the way it runs?
That's a very good question. How the hell can a bootloader affect a rom? I've read in several places that the trebuchet launcher had the bug...but since you're saying it happened on GoLauncher, then that throws that out the window. I'm running the JB rom and it works great. It's my DD now. Some games don't work, but who cares...lol.
Is there an easy way to make an widget that will force stop launcher? That'd be less annoying than opening settings and doing the whole process there.
Haha just realized when the launcher doesn't work, a widget is useless...
I wish that I had answers. Here is what I know about this. Launchers don't matter much. Every rom that I've tried when used with an ICS bootloader does this regardless of launcher. Every rom that uses the HC bootloader does not. Even the Flexreaper versions of ICS on the HC bootloader do not have this. It is very likely that I am just missing something more practical and am off base by pointing at the bootloader. But so far it has been the only switch that has worked for me. It does seem like 3d apps and advanced rendered widgets are part of the blame. I took a few logcats when this happened. I think I see where the errors happen, but I don't know enough to say for sure, let alone try to fix whatever it is.
My Gmail app does a similar flashing thing then crashes, but launcher still works. Play Music will also go blank/black. Anyone else having this problem or know if they're related?
(I know, 2012.... but nobody posted a solution and I found it.)
Solution was pretty simple. Go to Launcher in App settings, and wipe stored data,. You will lose some setup stuff but in least it won't crash anymore.
