Dev emulator?

Anyone know if there is a dev emulator(software type) for windows that I could use to test an tweak with, as I like the stability of my phone. I am just trying to start doing some work myself, so if I'm totally off as far as this even being an option let me know(nicely please ))

Closest thing you'll find is AVD which is android virtual device that we use to debug programs we write. Its part of the android sdk and gets integrated Eclipse when you set up your environment. Personally, I doubt it would be worth a damn for ROM making or tweaking. I am not sure how you would load any software on it other than vanilla android. Also its painfully ef'ing slow. I can't believe with my i7 and 16 gigs of ram it still takes 3 minutes to boot, and on my old laptop it takes 7 minutes. I really think big G could have done better with it, and its due for an over haul.

There is also the route of being able to run in vbox that I have heard, but my guess is that you would need an intel x86 kernel compiled for it....just a guess though.

Mac connectivity on osx Lion

Anyone else having trouble mounting their Epic to the Mac running Lion? I just recently upgraded and am no longer to connect. Wondering if its just me.

Same here. Cannot make any connection after upgrade to Lion with epic 4g.

Is lion the new update that just came out. What version is it?

Oh great...I haven't tried this yet, but I upgraded to OS X Lion, so most likely it won't work for me...
Damn, now I have to use SSH/FTP if I want to transfer files from Comp to Phone...

Nah, you have to buy the new OS on the Mac App Store for $30. Great deal in my opinion compared to Windows 7 Prices ($200+ jeezus!)

I'll start by saying I've been Snow Leopard as long as I've had the Epic.
You trying to connect through a Cinema Display? When I connect my Epic to the monitor (24 inch with 3 usb ports) it never mounts, but if I connect it straight to the MacPro it does. Never been able to figure that one out, but I've found that to be the case. Real PITA because all of the USB ports on the MacPro and both Cinema Displays are used - although one of the ports on the display is used on a handy charging cable for the phone.
That said I've never had trouble mounting on Windows, straight to my PC or through a hub.
I think it's just a problem between Macs and our phone.
Sidenote - sometimes when I connect my Epic to the Cinema Display it causes a freak out and the Mac says a device was trying to draw too much current so it disconnects the hub inside the Cinema display which disconnects all connected peripherals, the webcam, and the speakers until I disconnect the screen's USB cable from the back of the tower and reconnect. Anyone have a clue how to prevent this?

I don't mean an upgrade. I mean the full thing. Yeah some are cheaper, but I mean ones like W7 Ultimate is very pricey

You guys had any luck getting this working? I have the same issue ... Running Cyanogenmod 7 on my HTC Desire.

Same here as well. although. I noticed the my Mac Book pro that gave with 10.7 doesn't read my epic as a mass storage device. But when I plug it into a friends mac book pro that was upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7 detects mass storage just fine.
I downloaded, and installed a update for Kies, but that didn't seem to do anything either ( i have rebooted yet, will up date this post if it works after a reboot.).
If anyone figures this out please update this thread.

Fix
Shutdown you Mac, boot into safe mode. Press and hold shift key after the chime when you power on your mac. You will know that you're in safe mode because only programs that came with Lion will boot. Fully boot into Lion, then restart back into regular mode. Connect your phone, turn on USB mass storage mode. Should be working now. Apparently the issue has to do with corrupt driver cache.

$30 every year vs. $250 every 5 years, both companies are about the same just one releases quicker and gets ya for small chunks when your not looking

Windows 8

I tried to install the Samsung drivers under windows 8 without success. I ended up installing it on a virtual windowsXP machine running under VirtualBox on the win8 machine and it works fine.
I put the phone in download mode and fired up Odin and it recognize the phone.

been on 8 primarily since the dev preview, never had issues. I use the google USB drivers since I'm on ics.

I'm still on Windows XP haha, I meant to upgrade to Win 7 but never did since I can't afford to upgrade my motherboard/cpu/ram/etc. Windows 8 looks promising... but I don't really know how I feel about it looking/feeling like a mobile platform rather than a more 'traditional' desktop feel. Do they let you change it to look like traditional Windows or not?

yes it has both, you can default it back to the classic windows style desktop.

I tried to install the sdk but it's complaining that it can't find java.exe or the java sdk even though it's installed and jave.exe is right where it says it can't find it. Did you run into anything like that?
EDIT: never mind. I was installing the 64 bit version. the sdk wants to see the 32 bit version.

OK, got the sdk installed and now adb works but but the phone still does not show up in odin. Any ideas why?

not sure.. it should be using the same drivers. make sure you have those along with the Samsung ones, and I think I have the nexus cm7 drivers installed from somewhere.

Questions about windows 8

Okay, I'm using windows 8 release preview x64 on my gateway desktop, and I need some help with a couple things.
First of all, metro apps will not load. I have tried several tweaks around xda and other sites and cannot get anything more than the app preview screen coming up for just a second, then closing. I have an ATI Radeon 5450HD graphics card, running proper amd catalyst drivers for windows 8, and all settings are correct.
Second, has anyone been able to get dfs tool working on windows 8? I've tried installing it in compatibility mode for windows XP, Vista, and 7, all with no luck.
Any help with either issue would be greatly appreciated... And sorry this isn't in a Q&A section, but I couldn't find Q&A forum for windows 8. TIA...

I have my Win 8 running in a VMware virtual machine. I noticed that Metro apps will timeout loading if it is taking too long.
The app eventually loads but does so minimized. Check your left side to see if it is running.
If you are seeing a lot of your apps doing this, you may need to upgrade your computer to something faster.

I understand that... But not a single one of the metro apps will start. They just bring up an app preview screen, then it drops to the background, and the app never actually opens.

I'd just reinstall. You have something wrong. Did it ever work? Maybe go back to a better point in time with System Restore.
You are logged in with a Live account, right? You can't load Metro apps with a local account (to my knowledge). You have to log on with a Live account.

It's a fresh install, I've tried on two different machines, neither of which have ever had metro apps work... And yes, I'm using a live account...

Yes, every metro app has 15 seconds to load, if it doesn't, them it will end.

Theyve never worked, even on my laptop, which has Intel integrated graphics. But, I've not tried the guide you linked... I'll try that and report back sometime today...

The guide is for and graphics only.... go to Intel driver utility And install the latest driver then try.... I had the same problem it has something to do with hardware acceleration.

Windows 8 didn't run properly on my laptop too, had some papercuts as well. The specification requirements for Windows 8 are equal to those of Windows 7. If you can run Windows 7, you can run Windows 8. So, it's all just a bit of patience before RTM and the final release become available.

Windows 8 Reset

Oh boy... haha. So my Windows 8 pro disk arrived today and I installed it and everything and told it to keep NOTHING, but it insisted on keeping shizz anyways, so then I decided it'd be a good idea to hit to hit the RESET button in the Control Panel since I had my shiz backed up anyways and WOW... I have some of the BEST PC specs out there and this thing is taking it's sweet ass time. Lol. It's been 12 hours and it's nearly 22%....
So my question to you guys is... Have any of you ever tried this? How long did it take you? What's your PCs specs? Did you wipe all drives? Any coolio info for me on Windows 8 before I switch back to Mint Linux?

Installing Windows within Windows

In all seriousness, Microsoft has had a problem "upgrading" since it started trying.

Took me about 6 hours to upgrade. Chose the option to keep everything.

Clean install from boot took maximum 1 to 1.5 hour to install...

I've had the same issue. I chose to do a full clean on the main partition and after 8 hours, I'm at 54%. Hopefully when I'm off work it will be done but that's not a good sign.
When it's done, I'm going to also be performing another reset but not the full clean. I would truly like to know the real differences between the 2 reset options. Does one delete the partition and format and the other doesn't?

The reset option formats and defrags along with segment checks for errors I believe.

I "Refreshed" Windows 8 once during RTM but before 10/26 and it took forever on my SS7S with SSD and then I had a ton of software glitch problems afterwards. I don't personally believe the "Refresh" works.

Imo, you're better off just backing your stuff up and formating your stuff from the bios / booting from the Windows 8 disk.

sounds a bit dodgy to me, it shouldn't have taken that long at all
oh an just a quick word to all the "updating is bad" folk out there, its been a long time since Windows actually did a proper "update" updates now consist in dumping all your old crap in a separate folder and installing windows to a new folder. Its very clean and no worse then a fresh install, infact I now recommend updating as all the old crap which users inevitably forget to backup is still there for the taking, I updated this system im typing on from Win 7 to 8 in a little over 30 min, start to finish, virtual drived the ISO, and let it fly like poo of a shovel is it some uber fast system?
well its a quad core AMD 905e 4GB of RAM and a good old WD 1TB 7200 HDD, not too shabby but pretty slow by todays standards
