What update, and what were you running before? Lots of update files.
HC? ICS? Version?
I was doing a HC one. I was going from HC 3.2 to HC 3.0.1 i used this update.zip "Acer_A500_1.104.05_COM_GEN1"

Can I ask why you were trying to downgrade? Were you trying to get root access?
Be careful when using update.zips. Not all will work depending on what you currently have installed. Which is why you got the error.
Try this...

I suppose, you never did a Recovery backup, or you don't know your UID number?
I was able to fix the Boot verified failed by putting a HC 3.2.1 update.zip on the sd card and doing a recovery and it booted! Now time to root

Word to the wise, make sure you get your CPUID or it may not work out so well next time... Save it someplace safe as it may help if you can't flash using CWM...

Well, since I have been customizing ROM & kernel for my Nexus one and archos tablet, I have experience in signing .zip files that could be flashed in recovery.
While this Acer machine provides a way for us to flash update.zip by pressing vol- during startup, but I fail to flash a testing update.zip file.
I have made a testing update.zip, sign it, place it in /mnt/external_sd/
But the update.zip seems fail to update due to 'incorrect signature'. Do we need a specific signature other than the normal testsign signature? Let's discuss.

We expect that an Acer specific signature will be needed to sign our updates.

That said the Acer is in the same Situation as the Motorola Milestone was after having root but not enabled to use custom kernels.
A few month later there were customs but they all are stuck to the original kernel with a few modules to optimize the situation.

Do you guys have the stock image for the iconia tab? I need to restore a device, if I restore it it's mine . I need to apply the update.zip from stock.
Thanks

I'm running into this too. If we're using clockworkmod recovery, shouldn't it skip the signature check?
It does skip it when flashing a rom when you select "Install zip from sdcard". But if the zip is called update.zip and you boot with vol-down+power, then you get the sig fail.
Seems like when it boots and trying to install a ROM specified with the /cache/recovery/command file, then it enforces a sig check. And signing with the test key doesn't work.
EDIT: Didn't notice this was an old thread.. but i guess it's still relevant.
Hi. sorry noob here. i have the us tf101 transformer and it is still on 8.4.4.5 rooted but there is no cwm. I tried RecoveryInstaller but i keep getting parse error. I want to upgrade to ICS and there is already the ota so should i unroot or install cwm and flash ics rooted rom? also, is there another way to install cwm? adb doesn't work on my computer anymore
thanks in advance
i Would use an NVFlash stock rom to get to .21 then install the 0ta from there
do you happen to have step-by-step instructions? and does it use adb? because adb mysteriously stopped working on my laptop.
thanks

Just an alternate suggestion, but I had no problem with Recoveryinstaller on ICS. You could just do the OTA, then use Vipermod to root and then use Recoveryinstaller.
yeah, but i'm still in rooted HC 3.1 so i cant do OTA upgrades.

ok. i nvflashed to the 8.4.4.5 version. can i upgrade directly to .21? it is now unrooted but it wont get any ota updates and the wifi bar is white, not blue even when it actually works. also, i checked when power+vol up and it shows WW even when it is supposed to be US since i bought it in the states. a few months back i brought it to the service center and i think they tried to tamper with the bootloader so now it shows ww. should i update .zip ww? i tried us and it gives me the android /!\ logo.
thanks again!
Try this, download the .21 from Asus
Extract the zip file from within
make a copy of it and rename it EP101_SDUPDATE.zip
Put both the original file and the renamed file on the root of the external sd card
Boot into stock recovery
Hi,
atm, I have an A501 with CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.x(thor2002ro rev1.7) and Android 3.2 (EMEA CUS7 - Germany).
My Tab tells me that there is an update, which I downloaded and tried to install. However, after a few seconds an Android with a red exclamation mark appears and the installation of the updates aborts.
So, I want to remove CWM Recovery and root and return to a stock rom. However, that seems impossible. I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer App but this one offers me a USA A500 stock rom - but I need an A501 rom because of 3g.
When I try to install this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234039) I decrypted before, CWM tells me
"Installating update...
Installation aborted"
So, this does not work either.
I am really desperate because I have to revert to a stock rom...
Can someone please, please, please help me out?

The update has overwritten yr custom recovery with the Acer stock recovery. It also checks yr system files if it ain't completely stock it will abort. being rooted can also affect the update.

Did u install cwm again from Acer recovery installer b4 flashing. the rom?
I'm unfamiliar with the 501 and what stock Roms are available for it
Search xda for vache full ota update packages and see if there's one that thread

Thank you a lot for your answer!
Yes, I did install cwm again from acer recovery installer, but that did not change anything.
Unfortunately none of the roms offered on xda work, they all abort in cwm and I don't know why.
I would prefer to go back to a stock rom with stock recovery because I want to give the tab to someone else.

Yeah, you may have difficulties flashing full packages via CWM. Especially if you didn't decrypt the rom first.
I've got a few 501 roms you can try. All HC 3.2.
One of them, is an ATT full package update which will probably work for you. Just pull the update.zip out of it. Put it on your Ext SD card, and boot holding PWR and Vol+. This will force it to install update.zip from the SD card.
Any rom you use, you have to decrypt it first. Some try renaming the rom to update.zip, and some have success using this method.
Like I say, it's an AT&T rom, but is probably really a ComGen 1. So it should have decent language support.
If you're interested, I can throw them up on a server tomorrow.
But I tell you this first, before you go messing around with these things. GET YOUR UID Number first, and write it down. You can get instructions on UID in the Development Forum, 1st page usually. It's easy.

No probs!!
U must use a "update.zip" , decrypted first as Moscow said, and booting into recovery via button combo may help too,
also remember to remove the zip file off the ext. sdcard when you are done!!
....good luck
I've got a couple ICS 8GB A500's I'm trying to flash so I can do the memory swap thing with 16gb microsd's. I'm stuck at the very beginning trying to get an unlocked bootloader and clockworkmod installed.
I've followed several of the guides and they all seem to be failing at the same spot. I've done blackthund3r and afterota and V8-UNL-ICS-HC-bootloader-MULTI-cwm script with no luck.
I'm pretty sure the problem is something to do with my BCT. Running afterota to flash or blackthund3r w/o custom BCT each puts the tablet into the recovery mode but nvflash errors on a bunch of partition commands and fails to upload the images (afterota sticks on 3/5 for instance or blackthund3r hangs uploading the bootloader).
My guess is that it's because my BCT is different from the majority of every elses because I'm using the little 8gb version.
I tried blackthund3r using the extract BCT, but it simply hangs immediately after loading the bct and never gets the tablet into recovery mode. I looked at the extracted bct.dec, and it looks like the same few bytes repeated over and over (nothing like the default bct's) so I'm pretty sure that blackthund3r is failing to extract my BCT properly.
Can anyone assist me in getting a valid bct.bct for my 8gb devices so I can make some forward progress? (calling Blackthund3r if you're out there...)
Version info according to afterota. I also have the serial, cpuid, and sbk according to afterota:
Android Build: Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1
Bootloader : 0.03.12-ICS
The only way to fix bct errors usually is to roll back to HC via timmydeans v4 or with srbeens direct nvflash command... if u have Ubuntu try nvflash with it
One thing tho is I don't know if the partitions, bct are the same for the 8gb - guess only one way to find out aye
U myt wanna look at jdgment3ls easy pass thread regarding reverting to stock
Let us know how u get on, good luck!

I tried using jdgment3ls method and that failed (I got the acer icon with the red letters about failed validation or something...can't remember).
I went with timmydeans v4 and boom...back on honeycomb. From there acer recovery got me clockwork. I also ran blackthund3r's upgrader with default bct and it worked perfectly this time so now I have a hacked ICS bootloader and clockwork recovery. As soon as the ICS rom finishes I should be back to ICS and can restore my data.
Thanks for the help.

Sure, I was just trying to figure out what did or didn't work after I used tdv4. It appears that it returned my system to "normal" so all the usual tools worked like acer recovery, blackthund3r, etc. I can only speculate that maybe the out-of-the-box 8gb had a different BCT and tdv4 has set it like everyone else's now.
Yes, I returned the system to ICS Stock after validating that blackthund3r worked (it of course overwrote the bootloader). From there I rerooted it with blackthund3r and removed the .sh script that deletes custom recoveries. I then reused blackthund3r to put a patched bootloader and recovery back on. I'll probably look at custom roms later, but for now I just wanted to get to stock w/ the custom bootloader & recovery and root and then use cwm to flash the memory swap mod.
For the record, I used Titanium backup. It failed to backup and restore the Minecraft maps, pictures/videos, and one or two game settings so I lost all of that. Is there a better backup program to use before tdv4? I usually just use the one built into CWM, but obviously I couldn't get to that one before tdv4 on this unit.
Since I keep getting PM's about the link for the zip, I have put it back up.

You can install via ADB. I think you jsut place it were adb is installed on your pc.
So usually platform-tools, I'm not sure.

Skip the irrelevant parts, lol. As you already have the zip.
I've got my card as Adoptable Storage so installing from sdcard didn't work. Tried installing from adb sideload and got "Footer is wrong. Signature verification failed."

When you did sideload did you rename it to ota.zip? What method did you try for sdcard install? Did you create a fota folder and place it in it as update.zip?
If no one gets this to work don't freak out. I'll contact someone who can give us hand. I still have the original in the /data/fota folder. The md5 checksum I posted was from the copy. As I couldn't get it for the original. I didn't install superuser, jsut the eng_boot
And failed again. Same errors. Confirmed md5sums again and same errors regarding footer and signature verification. This is also a total stock phone, never rooted or customized.
