My path to hard bricking DO NOT FOLLOW THESE STEPS
Step 1 : updated to ICS(4.0.3 LP8) OTA
Step 2 : Rooted with the help of Dr_Ketans guide (worked perfectly fine - no issues so far)
Step 3 : even after rooting, while entering recovery i used to get, what I feel, was the stock recovery and not CWM (as in drketans guide), so I flashed CWM.zip from stock recovery and from CWM recovery I performed a nandroid backup - till now all izz well.
Step 4 : (It gets bad here)
Now from the CWM recovery i flash asylum rom - and its over. Hard bricked.
Not able to go to recovery
Not able to switch it on normally (duh...)
Not able to enter download mode, not even the blind download mode where nothing is visible on the screen but ODIN detects it....
this is not a complain thread, just wanted to share this so that others do not commit the same mistake
If mods feel this is unnecessary please remove it and add this info to pre-existing threads.

So you actually didn't read this part from the asylum thread about installation:
-be on a proper working recovery, (DAFUQ, CM9 or a GB recovery ONLY)
-DO NOT FLASH FROM I9220 LEAK REPACK ROMS
-DO NOT FLASH FROM LPY BASED ICS ROMS,
-IF YOU ARE UNSURE PLEASE POST A SCREENSHOT AND ASK.
Too bad that you bricked your note though.
If im not mistaken, Asylum is a CM9 based rom and it should not be flashed on a Samsung Based ICS. This would eventually result to Brick. Any CM9 based rom should only be flashed on a GB based rom or another CM9 based. Just my 2 cents on this issue.
jeez thats right he flashed it on an ics based rom.

Even the new Poland/Turkey LPF ?
So which one is safe for now, is it LP9 ?
No stock samsung kernel is safe to wipe in. Latest Cf-kernel, franco and speedmod might be safe. But its not yet 100% guaranteed.
Other than that its just the cm9 kernels that are completely safe.

The issue is w/ the kernel of the stock ICS and has nothing to do w/ CM9 being flashed over the stock ICS. In fact, installation instructions for the rest of the ICS based custom ROMs are now similar to CM9. As mentioned by the devs, it's not safe to wipe or flash another ROM when on an ICS stock kernel.
Gotta love it that people dont read the first post or even a thread
You should be warning people to read to not make same mistake

Its not safe to flash any CM9 based roms on samsung based ICS. If you are willing to read more its indicated in most of the CM9 based roms threads even the CM9 nightlies thread it indicates that its not safe flashing on any samsung ics roms. Its only safe to flash a cm9 based rom on a gb rom or a cm9 rom.
But if your convinced on what you just have said then try flash any cm9 based rom on a samsung based ICS.

Bricked mine nearly the same way yesterday. no recovery, no download mode. phone goes to samsung for warranty. After the eMMC file structure is corrupt, is there any possibilities for samsung to see what rom caused the brick?!

I know that but it's not just CM9. It's also not safe to flash other custom roms on top of a samsung based ICS. Regardless on what you flash (CM9 or other ROM) you could brick your device. And why would i flash cm9 on a samsung based rom when i just said in my previous post that "As mentioned by the devs, it's not safe to wipe or flash another ROM when on an ICS stock kernel."

From memory the CWM is not permanent and goes after a reboot, it is purely used to install busybox and su.

The latest Gingerbread is XXLC2. Yes, you can flash an ICS Rom, but I'd wait a bit if I were you. You need to learn quite a bit before being able to cope with Beta ICS Roms.

First you need to flash an older Rom so you can successfully root it. THis is how it's done:

There are ways to improve your Note's performance without root, yes. But you won't be able to significantly improve it. Too much bloatware in stock Roms that you cannot successfully remove.
Thanks
Thanks so much for the reply, but i m on 2.36 already, do i need to flash?
I suggest you to stay on LB3 and wait for Official ICS to release. however ICS AOSP ROMs are available Here . Before you flash any AOSP ICS ROM you need to root your device and other all details are available on above linked Development page.
But my phone's model is N7000B, will that affect?
Well, I think flashing ROMs these days is pretty easy. I am no expert but I've had no problems with flashing different ROMs as such and I flash new ROM every week or two. I am currently using Imilka's AOSP, which is generally pure ICS Android. Before this I was using CheckROM HD, great battery life and performance, based on GB.
GB ROMs are a bit easier to flash and have better performance and stability than all these ICS ROMs (apart from Imilka's AOSP, I find it just too good).
Open up the Android Development section for Note, read a few threads thoroughly, decide your ROM and go for it.
Rooting instructions are very well explained by Dr Ketan in his threads. You can't go wrong about it.
To summarize:
1. Flash an older rootable GB ROM through PC Odin.
2. Install ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM). See Dr Ketan's guide.
3. (OPTIONAL) Install Titanium Backup and backup all your apps and their data. (Use batch operations)
4. Boot up into CWM, scroll to backup/restore and create a backup of your current ROM. This is a VERY VERY IMPORTANT step. Just in case anything goes wrong or you're not happy with your new ROM, you can go back to your older, original GB ROM with all your data and settings intact.
5. Choose your ROM.
6. Read it's thread thoroughly, especially the installation instructions. Do just like the creator says. If there's a video, follow it!
7. (OPTIONAL) Restore your data through TB.
8. Enjoy your new ROM.
I've the CriskeloROM ICS ZCLP6 and I'm afraid of brick my phone. So I want to go back to GB but I don't know if I'm with i9220 kernel or not or one safe way to go back to GB.
A good tutorial will be good to me and to the others. I know that anything is safe because we don't know the real cause of this, but...

you're wrong, CWM problem is for offical LPY ICS rom germany not for the Leaked rom ICS ZCLP6. You can still use CWM to flash kernel, but DON'T WIPE ANYTHING.
Both of this rom are dangerous, and my advise to you is to revert back to GB rom.

is not really necessary to flash kernel cleaner but many of us using it before flashing other kernel
Hi. I've done this and I'm on GB now. But now I have a new question. Because I flash the LP1 ROM, when I go to download mode, it says "Binary: Custom". I supose that was because I flash the I9220 Bootloader.
If I want to reset the flash counter with a Jig to sent the phone to warranty (if I need), probably I need to flash the "samsung oficial" bootloader.
Anyone can explay this better ou help me flashing the original bootloader and leave the phone in warranty again, please?
EDIT: If helps, I have a ROM that I copy from Kies when I upgrade the first time the note with a oficial ROM. If when I flash that, it will install the original bootloader, say the ODIN options and I will flash it.
THanks for any help.

Simple, Downgrade to a older GB using PC odinthe rom must be one of the 'root able' roms found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Then once you have downgraded use this method to gain root and cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 (scroll to the bottom of the op)
Thanks man, But on another thread (CleaNote ROM) it says this:
Flash STOCK ICS with PC odin
boot the rom
reboot to dowload mode
flash CF kernel
reboot rom
copy CleaNote ROM zip to phone
reboot to CWM
install zip

Do i have to do that ^^ Or can i just root my current stock GB ROM + Add CWM, Then flash Abyss Kernel, Then flash the ROM of my choice ?

If you are looking to flash a rom that has step by step instructions on how to install it then follow those, as some roms require different instructions.
But if you want to gain root and CWM and are not sure on what rom you want first what I have said is the easiest way to go
Well that was just what i read on one of the posts, In the OP it just says flash from CWM, Providing you have a safe kernel and root.
My current ROM is LC1 which is one of the unrootable ROMs, and my DLoad for ICS is almost complete !
I think i will just flash ICS then a safe kernel, Then the CleaNote ROM. Im just so scared about the brickbug lol. I will wipe before i update, As GB is safe right ?

ICS flashed fine
Got root and CWM, Just installed Abyss kernel. Now doing a nandroid, Then Im gonna flash CleaNote,
Will avoid the wipe option even tho it says its safe in this kernel, Just not ready to take the risk yet.
Thanks for the advice, Been debating whether to take the plunge all day.
EDIT: spoke to soon, Now Im stuck on Splash screen, Dunno why, The nandroid was successful, But i cannot boot back into recovery now.
Looks like I'll have to flash the ICS again.
Abyss kernel is for gb not for ics. When cleanote said a safe kernel it is speedmod k3-3 or franco r3,r4,r5& r6. They use abyss kernel in wiping data in ics recovery just to be safe and the right step are 1. Flash the abyss kernel 4.2( after that do not wipe or flash your custom rom yet, very important to remember it will superbreak your phone), 2. Go to advanced and find reboot to recovery and click it and do the wiping their, its safe 3. and then you can flash the custom rom. In the case of cleanote theirs no need use abyss if you already flash speedmod or franco kernel in your ics before flashing the cleanote rom because cleanote 1.02 will automatically wipe your data.
Thanks man !! I'll get the hang of this one day
Im on rooted stock ICS now, With CF Kernel, So I just need to flash speedmod kernel( I loved their kernels & ROMs on the SGS1) reboot recovery, Then install CleaNote ?
I almost got it right lol
After flashing speedmod k3-3 click REBOOT SYSTEM NOW(get out of the recovery first) then check in the setting if you really have the speedmod kernel in your system running to be sure and enter recovery again and flash the cleanote rom, thats it.
[UPdated]4.04 LPM danger -> move to LQ5 Kernel [info]& How to screen capture in 4.04
Update: Please install a custom recovery if you are running any of the 4.04 kernels. LPM KERNELS ARE MORE AT RISK!!!
I reverted back to LQ5 yesterday because of the issue with Youtube HD not functioning unless I roll back the Youtube version or swap kernels. Aside from that Chainfire has warned me that he will not be releasing and CF-root for LPM because it has an underlying Kernel *possible* brick problem that cannot be alleviated with just updating to custom recovery via CF-Root.
Custom recovery DOES implement a different means of running the wipe factory data reset that *shouldn't* cause a brick. But as per Chainfire's PM we may still be at risk?
http://download.chainfire.eu/202/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LQ5-v5.6-CWM5.zip
To check if you are one of these people that may have the eMMC corruption and possible bricking of your S2....check for Chainfires app called Gotbrickbug. Also by chainfire.
Gotbrickbug thread

Screen capture method for 4.04 ICS Samsung is now long press button then long press home button; and in that order too. Not power and volume down like on 4.03.
Either use these and or wait for my ROM to be released via Darky if you are not confident.
Please give all credits to Chainfire for this, without him XDA would not have Root, so be thankful this guy continues to support us all.

You're on LQ5, you may want to ditch the kernel and run with LPM man. Its the wipe script that is in the recovery that will corrupt your eMMC. Not just the stupid .PIT file that it came with + stupid people trying to restore from a custom kernel after the repartition. Both are issues with LQ5.
Attached is the LPM ZImage + CWM apk. Use CWM apk by chainfire to flash the zImage. Then flash this
http://download.chainfire.eu/202/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LQ5-v5.6-CWM5.zip
That will give you root and recovery too DO NOT WIPE ON THE CURRENT LQ5 KERNEL!!
Attachments now removed as per Chainfires instructions. For future reference please don't redistribute his CWM app, it gets installed with the CF-root flash anyway.
You seem to be saying that LPM has a safe kernel, while in fact it hasn't. There are even reports of people bricking their s2 by using the official recovery (not cwm) under stock lpm kernel.
Any of the newer firmwares than LQ5 seems to be very dangerous! Russian forums reported many people to have hard bricked their devices also whilst wiping data partition on lwm kernel...
So be aware of any leaked firmwares and only use official ones or those confirmed by chain fire for be working...

Hmmm I may have to look into branching siyah sooner than i expected. He has a lot on his plate atm, so will look into this. I have never built a kernel but afaik its relatively simple. Its the extra features that people want that is the time consumer. Well I would recommend that users flash the recovery that I have given the link to and utilise that.
If that is the case they should be able to run the LQ5 kernel and flash that recovery? I have just contacted chainfire first to give cred which I think a lot of us forget that he is a dev and we all use his work on this forum. Well get off the stock recovery is what I am saying!!! Get off it now!! Your at risk right now. Just cause you flashed it and didn't get the brick doesn't mean you won't. It is when you do a factory data reset that you **could** get a corrupted eMMC. Doesn't mean you will...just means that at the moment you are at risk if you ever do a reset on your phone in recovery.
see the link in my second post to chainfires website. Download that LQ5 CF-root and flash that via Odin.
This adds a custom recovery 5.x to your phone and it should by pass the stock kernel 3e recovery when you boot into it via the CWManager app (this is in the attachment) I will put it in there sepperated now for users like your self that already have LQ5. If you want to boot into recovery you do so via this app only. It will take you to the clockwork recovery console not the standard 3e one that comes with the kernel and firmware.
I hope this all makes sense now?

It was more a note for those that are looking how the standard kernel runs. I know custom kernels run a heap better. I would be on siyah kernel if I could run it but I can't. If you compare kernels custom 4.03 to stock 4.04 you aint really comparing apples with apples are you? I hate apples now so I should change my lingo
But you get the jist.
How did I know this was going to turn into critics paradise as per usual? This forum is full of em. I hate CRITICS MORE THAN APPLE!
@ Jarmezrocks
Which modem are you using dear?
Is CWManager App really needed when cfroot 5.6 has already been flashed via odin?
Below is the procedure I think maybe correct:
I) Flash CF-Root LQ5 5.6 via odin in download mode.
II) Flash LPM Kernel via odin in download mode.
No wipe or factory reset shall be done anywhere.
Is it correct?

Thats good :good:
3 hours screen on at 30-50 brightness can last a full day for me on my current firmware (no wifi, no BT, no gaming).
I have rooted the LQ5 with CF-Root LQ5 v5.6 via odin & flashed the attached LPM kernel through CWM Manager. It's working fine.
One thing is that when i opened cwm manager after reboot, it says this version should be used with cf-root 5.0. Some features will be disabled.
I don't think it is going to affect anything as it is about the software features.

Hi,
I know there are dozens of threads around about flashing Custom ROMS on the Note, but I have specific requirements to be met before attempting to flash a ROM on my Note. Its not that I'm new to flashing ROMS, its just that since I know that the Note is the "most vulnerable" device when it comes to the emmc bug, I want to be on the safer side. My Note is just around a month old and I dont want to brick it due to any foolishness from my side warranty in India sucks, In simple words, even if I'm eligible for warranty, I would receive my Note in a scratched, scuffed and abused manner though in a "working" condition, God knows for how long after a freaking month or two. Well, thats warranty here in India. So, as my loss is my loss alone, I created this thread to be safe.
Coming back to the topic, I'm running Stock ICS DDLPA on Speedmod Kernel K3-7 and want to move to Paranoid Android 0.5 which I believe is a CM9 based ROM.
1) As I am on ICS (speedmod kernel k3-7), is it safe to flash a Gingerbread ROM via PC ODIN?
2) If the 1st one is a go, I do not want to increase my binary counter while rooting gingerbread or installing Paranoid. I know about TriangleAway but since it requires the CF Kernel, flashing many kernels(on the NOTE) freaks me out at the moment. So I just want to flash the ROM without any increase in binary counter.
3) In the video guide on installing Paranoid Android, I see that the person goes into CWM recovery in the Gingerbread Kernel and flashes the Paranoid ZIP file and GAPPS and then proceeds to Wipe Data\Factory Reset. But once the paranoid android ZIP file is flashed, isnt he on an ICS kernel? Correct me if I'm wrong.
4) I see that Paranoid Android uses the CM9 kernel. Is it guaranteed Safe to Wipe using this kernel? Does it have the MMC_CAP_ERASE disabled like the speedmod kernels?
5) Last, incase if I ever want to revert back to Stock ICS for any reason, is it safe to flash back to Stock ICS using PC Odin while still on the CM9 Kernel or do I need to flash the Stock Gingerbread first over the existing CM9 kernel?
It would be really helpful if my queries are answered in the same manner as I have asked above.
I have gone through all the warnings and guides here in the forum but none of them seems to specifically satisfy my needs. I would have just flashed away but since its a "NOTE" again, I really want to be on the safer side.
Thanks in advance.
Flash Abyss Kernel.
Reboot in Recovery (under advanced) <= important
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps
Full wipe (factory reset, cache + dalvik cache)
Reboot and enjoy.
To come back to Sammy ICS => PC ODIN

You're the first guy on this forum wanting to flash something with "specific needs". I wish you all the best. Good luck!

I'm sorry, all the issues which popped up lately regarding the emmc bug as kept me on stock till now. If that nasty bug wasn't there, this thread wouldn't be there in the first place. I've never run on stock on any of my phones and this is the first time that I've stayed this long on stock. Its not that I'm new to flashing or anything. I've been doing that since the Symbian and WinMo 6.5days. Its just that its a "Note" and I wish to avoid a brick anytime soon.
But why not just ask in the ROM thread. I am sorry, but every day someone opens a thread which could - looking at the very specific needs of everyone - just be handled as a post (in your case in PA by imilka) instead of its own thread.
Nevertheless I am glad to see that you informed yourself.
If you felt better, then install one of the per rooted GB Roms.

1.flashing stock rom with pc odin is safe. Irrespective of rom you are having.
2.flashing stock rom.doesn't raise flash counter.
3. B'coz it now running on cm9 kernel which is safe.
4.yes emmc erase cap driver is.diabled, but.if you talking in terms of 'guaranteed' then even developers also not using this term still on ics
5. my answer 1 hav already answered this.

Trust me I was just as cautious as you are. But as long as you use a safe kernel, reboot recovery and then perform 3 wipes you will be fine.
I'm pretty sure speedmod is a safe kernel. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Good luck!! I go through more roms on my phone then I do underwear haha

If I flash Abyss Kernel using MobileODIN, I wont be able to boot into my existing ICS ROM as it is a gingerbread based kernel, am I right? Then, how do I confirm I'm on Abyss Kernel while in recovery?

Thanks for your quick reply. To be frank, I wanted to hear from you as I've seen all your guides.
My question no2 is not about flashing stock rom but will rooting the stock gingerbread with custom recovery raise counter? I do not want to increase the binary count. Would flashing the above mentioned AbyssKernel also do the job?
If you follow my guides to root gingerbread it won't raise counter. In my guide i have never mentioned any procedure which can raise counter.
Just one suggetion, if you want to flash gingerbread as only for switching purpose, then go with prerooted rom(find from my signature) and flash using pc odin. After flashing you will have gb rom +root+cwm

I used this guide, it's so simple and there are all of the steps including rootable GB rom.

Is there any complications flashing the AbyssKernel instead? Is it safe to flash with MobileODIN? Would it increase binary counter as I'm moving to a Gingerbread based custom kernel from ICS?

If it's completely stock, it won't increase your binary counter, also flashing kernels is 100% safe, even with the emmc bug.

No, unless you reboot right after flashing the rom, you're still on whatever kernel you used to flash, also CM9 kernels are safe.

Yes, but keep in mind stock ICS has the bug, so unless you're using a different kernel on it (SpeedMod, etc), you're not safe.

There's a galaxy note website, not sure I should mention it or not, where the guy uses abyss 4.2 all the time to "safely" flash new ICS roms. He flashes this kernel in recovery and then advance reboots into abyss recovery. Once in recovery he does the dalvik/cache wipes and factory resets before installing an ICS rom. I guess he uses this method as a way to avoid using pc odin to save time.

Yes you can use it, abyss kernel is GB kernel.
To test if I had the EMMC bricking bug I just flashed a rom. Hahaha.

Thanks a lot for all your support guys. I'm running Paranoid 0.5. The black clipping\crush is worst on the CM9 kernel and its everywhere. even in the UI. It really bothers me.
Could anyone suggest me a Good kernel with the least clipping and also any "Visually Pleasing" ROM (like MIUI) for the note? Paranoid looks mostly stock as its CM9 based but the tablet mode is just brilliant.on the Note. Its like the best of both worlds.
