Help flashing roms - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently rooted my Mytouch 4G using the Unlock Bootloader from Htcdev.com, i also flashed clockworkmod, busybox and superuser, The problem I'm having is when ever i try to flash a ROM i downloaded the phone just gets stuck at where you first boot it up at The "T Mobile MyTouch 4G" screen and just stays like that, i've tried it with a few different ROMs and it just stays like that, if anyone can help that'll be great and if you need more information then just ask please. i can also revert to the stock ROM fine but its the other ROMs that don't work
Thanks

You will need to revert down to 2.2.1 stock, then root. I did the same thing and found an issue with flashing roms. I do.t have the thread links with me right now but could help when I get home tonight.

This is no "issue". It's the intended behavior of HTCDev-unlocked bootloader. Kernel is to be flashed separately.
The only way to avoid it is to relock the bootloader and S-OFF with the old-fashioned downgrading method.

Ok so I used the wrong term when I said "issue". All I was getting at was s-off is the easier and preferred method.

Questions you're afraid to ask

So I installed the new Sense 3.0 Fusion ROM and it's awesome. I couldn't figure out how to edit the app shortcuts that appeared on the lockscreen, though, so I posted over on a different forum and the admin answered it for me. I felt dumb, however, that someone like me - and like all of us I'm sure - who consider themselves somewhat tech-savvy sometimes can't figure out the solution to seemingly easy questions. The answer, by the way, is to go into the personalize menu then choose lockscreen and hit settings -- I know it sounds dumb, and I thought I had already tried that. My point is, sometimes we're too afraid to ask questions that seem dumb so we never do. I'll do my best to answer your questions, and remember, Google and xda are your friends. Maybe you can even post fun tricks you've found and we can all help each other a little. If this is a stupid idea then I'll just let it fade off into oblivion...

I believe it originated due to a dev named KingKlick. He was notoriously called out for stealing other peoples work and naming it his, thus the CM team created the work "Kang" due to him.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's it.
Q: are there any dangers in using PD15IMG.zip?
Q2: I see people having issues where recovery won't mount system or cache partitions, which pretty much bricks their phone. Is there any indication to what causes this, and how can i avoid those issues?
I dont no of any danger flashing the PD15IMG.zip. I used it on a MT4G that I was selling (due to cheap silicone) and it put the phone to out of the box Stock. Good as New.

I used visionary 14 with Root.Rar file to acheive Perma-Root. I have also rooted using the g-free method (the semi-automated one) and have went back to stock using the PD15IMG.zip as well, with no problems.
You've used pd15img from both rooting methods? I only ask because I thought I read somewhere that pd15img can have issues with the rooting method that didn't use gfree. But if you've done it then no worries

PD15IMG.zip can be various things, I've seen it as taking you back to 100% stock and as flashing a new radio. Going back to stock with it I've read is easy enough (and I've done it once and I rooted with visionary/unlocker method), and I hear warnings all the time about just putting it on the sdcard and booting into bootloader to change the radio but it worked fine for me.
As with everything read the entire, or most of, forum before along anything you're not comfortable with.

I have used PD15IMG on a visionary root as well with no issues.
A question that I did have and felt like a goof asking it was not being able to get into my recovery by holding down volume down + power. The issue was that it would constantly load the PD15IMG when I tried this and would not allow me the option of booting into recovery because I kept that file on there anmed PD15IMG.
Once I took it off of the sd card, I was able to boot straight into recovery without issue. My workaround now, because I like to keep it on my sd card in case of emergency is simply keeping root explorer on there and it allows me to change the name of the file to whatever I want, allowing a boot into recovery by the v+p method and If I need it, I can just rename it through root explorer and it will load and put me back to stock!
And FWIW, I think this thread is a fantastic idea!
My noob question is I want to flash different roms but they say ext 3/4. Do I have to partition my sd card this way and can I do this with CW recovery? I don't want to lose info on my card. I am gfree rooted and running faux froyo kernal. Thx.

If you partition and SD card you will lose everything.
i also would advice against using ROM Manager for it. I'd use ADB if it were my phone...

I Will send you the logcat if needed.

If you are completely wiping when you install ROMs and don't use Titanium to restore backups I would try flashing the radio (at your own risk of course) or running the PD15IMG.zip and reverting to stock. If you aren't wiping completely do it, if you are using titanium know that it can cause errors when restoring data.
Thanks bro I'm going to try and flash the radio. I'm currently running the fusion ROM is there a particular radio u recommend or should o flash the one I'm using.

Flashing A New Radio
If I wanted to flash the latest radio for the mt4g, do I need adb to do so? Or could I just put it on the root of my sdcard and boot up to the hboot screen?

HTC Panache RUU on glacier rooted.

Ok after reading that I can go back to default RUU. I used the panache RUU, then tried visionary, didn't work.
Then I tried gingerbreak and it gave me error telling me to manualy reboot to check if SU is there. I rebooted removing battery..... And vola... super user was installed.I got rooted. Just installed Rom manager to flash recovery and all is fine.

Don't want to use custom as I'm very happy with stock . But as clockwork is installed, it should be fine. Using adfree, market access. Both needed root.

Could you please point me to the HTC Panache RUU file... I've searched all over, but cant seem to find it... My girls MT4G was stock, and got the TMO Gingerbread OTA. It soft bricked her phone (I can go into bootloader, fastboot, & when i attempt to power on, I get as far as the MyTouch 4G splash screen). Since it didn't have a custom recovery & was S-On, I'm pretty much stuck. I figure if at least this flashes, root, or no root, the phone will be functional again.. Please help...

So you are saying she had a stock unrooted MT4G, and the OTA bricked her phone? Strange.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16646127#post16646127
The RUU files for Mobilicity and Videotron are linked there. You might need a Gold Card to install, since the CID is different.
But overall, if the OTA bricked her S-ON device, I wonder if she just has the bad eMMC... and she was unlucky enough to discover that upon receiving an OTA.
The Dropbox link for Panache RUU doesn't work anymore. I've been looking for it but didn't find any.
How about the FileFactory link for the Mobilicity RUU?

i have searched and found that pd15img. zip flash i need to be s off and i am s on, im really trying to go back to stock everything!
Check the ultimate s= on/off thread? Haven't read it awhile but if I remember right down at the bottom of the first post, theres instructions for S= off.
Your post is kind of confusing. You want to go back to complete stock, but then want s off? S off isn't completely stock. But anyway that ultimate s off thread should get you where you want to be.

Downgrade and unlock sim

So I'm running vu 2.39 on my phone and I had rooted the phone using the root.sh/visionary method, not the gfree method. Now that I'm comfortable with it, I was trying to figure out how to unlock my phone. After backing up my phone, should I install the rooted stock rom, unroot using visionary, and then root using the gfree method OR install an unrooted stock rom (which I assume will restore everything back to factory) and then gfree OR something else??

I think gfree only works with froyo kernels. It wasn't working correctly for me on virtuous

You need to flash not only the stock 2.2.1 ROM but also the appropriate bootloader and possibly radio, to run Gfree. The easiest way to get all of that at once is to PD15IMG.zip or RUU back to that ROM after doing your nandroid backup. Then follow the full instructions for temp root and Gfree, and that's when you can enter the command that gets Gfree to SIM-unlock your phone. Once you've installed Clockwork again, revert to your nandroid backup.

great so i made an attempt to downgrade but i ran into a problem...i downloaded a stock rom, checked the md5 sum, and then tried to install following instructions but it turned s-on, reverted the h-boot version to 0.86.0000 and says main version is older, update fail!.... the rom is still rooted cause i used root checker to check and cwm 5+ is still installed so now i dunno what to do...
I followed this yesterday from stock 2.3.4 unrooted and it worked. Its rooted running Virtuous unity, and unlocked I tried my friends simple mobile sim and it worked.

Oh crap... I forgot that could happen after root.sh.
Check the downgrade guide - if you're rooted with S-ON the only step you should need to do is the misc version step, and then you should be able to flash the PD15IMG.ZIP again without getting the main version error.

Help get s-off after HTC unlocked bootloader

First I made the mistake of using the HTC method for unlocking my bootloader, I didnt come here 1st & getting my phone downgraded afterwards proved to be a difficult task, as I tried the simplest method many times, and I just couldnt get it to flash via hboot. But I finally got a stock rooted 2.2.1 rom on here, & I followed the Ultimate s-off guide, and everything appeared to go well, but s-on remained. Terminal said it applied everything without any errors. I have heard that it is difficult to remove the **UNLOCKED** and get s-off after doing things the HTC way. I am pretty good at following guides, but I am stuck at the moment. Any help would be appreciated. As I said the bootloader is unlocked and I have a 2.2.1 rooted rom on here. Whats the best way to go from here? Thanks

Man I am so excited! I sat back and read, I listened to others problems until I got a better understanding of what's going on. I managed to relock my bootloader, do a true root, s-off, & installed engineering hboot, and I feel lucky because I have the "bad chip" and I was so nervous, but I now have it done the right way! Thanks for any help that anyone has given.
