I just returned my N1 that i paid full price for.. my screen had 3 scratches as well as some on my camera lense
so i decided i would take the loss and later down the line maybe purchase the bravo or another N1 depending on how i like the bravo.. for now im stuck with my G1 with a cracked screen.. id use that any day over my iPhone 3g..
anyone else return theirs?
Huh? You returned it because you scratched the screen and camera lens? Why?
not just because of the scratches.. i had the 3g issue and a little dust.. i heard about many people having problems getting their warranty replacements, receiving phones in worse condition than the one they had and whatnot. so i just decided to return it . im kind of happy now because i can wait for the Bravo and maybe the HD2 hopefully without the strict subsidy policy
Ah, ok, the HD2 is a beast and should have a better subsidy policy since T-Mobile will be selling it directly, and they will be doing the same with the Bravo(if the rumors are true they are getting it).
(Sorry if anyone's heard me say this before)
If you read here, and a lot of support forums, you're going to hear mainly about people with faulty N1s. Many of us have phones that work perfectly. There was a poll up briefly about the dust and something like 31 had no problems, while 3 had clicking and 8 had dust (And this, given that the title of the poll probably attracted people with clicking or dust).
So, just a reminder that the majority of N1s are in great shape. Furthermore, this seems (to me) to be the most resilient piece of portable electonics since the Game Boy Color. I have never used a case, and only used a screen protector for the first few days, and the phone still looks like it just came out of the box. No smudges or scratches to be found.

Couldn't agree more.
Mine's in perfect condition too, or at least there isn't any fault that I can identify yet. Plus my phone held on to 3G signals better than my wife's iPhone 3GS (same starhub network).
Mine went from US to UK and from UK to Portugal and I don't have any problems with it, I'm loving the phone btw

You really need to take better care of your phones. 3 scratches on the gorilla glass in under 2 weeks? A cracked screen on the G1 I could understand after a year, accidents happen. Still I see a pattern here.

Hi
Can I ask where you bought it and if it was eBay who was the seller?

I'll admit that this also crossed my mind the first time I read this thread.
Did you return the phone because of the scratches or some other issue? Will they even take the phone back with scratches?
I will probably return my phone next week. I had it then for three weeks. I have the 3G issue and the touchscreen issue as well. I am really disappointed because of the lack of response from Google and HTC. I don't want a replacement because if you look at the poll 40% of the phones seemd to be broken. You get a refurbished one as a replacement so it is really likely that you get anoter lemon. How can they refurbish phones if they don't even know if it is a hardware or software problem?

i babied the phone, kept it in a separate pocket than my keys for the most part.. and 3 hairline scratches in 15 days was ridiculous .. no idea how it happened
i returned it partially how easily scratched, 3g issue, dust, warranty problem with unlocking the bootloader , and also the hopes of a better/cheaper phone coming out soon subsidized by T-Mobile.. the N1 is an amazing phone.. but because of how new it is i think it would be better if i just waited a little bit.. i am still waiting to get the conformation from HTC on if they will accept it in its current condition.. its really not that bad they probably wont even notice it
Just wondering, those of you planning on returning it after the 14 day return policy window, how are you going about that? Do you live in California or is HTC/Google cutting you slack because it has issues?

Has anyone confirmed that this has gorilla glass from an official source? I've seen a lot of conjecture - mostly from people referencing the "scratch test" video - but no official word from anyone involved in the manufacture or teardown of the phone confirming the gorilla glass part...
i dont think it's gorilla glass.. i had iphone 3g for 1 and half years and had no scratch at all.. my N1 i had taken good care and never dropped once! but somehow i got 1 hairline scratch.. don't really trust that video..
N1 screen will scratch and i am thinking of returning it too.. the build quality seems to be not good

how so? I have no complaints about my build quality.
Lol, people...
I have the 3G issues And touch screen issues.. I have a SMALL piece of lint that seems to have found it's way into the phone and is about to get onto the screen... for now it's just to the side of the screen but visible.
Coming from a iPhone 3G I simply can't type even near as close to as fast on this phone and my god does that annoy me! When I type fast the keyboard does all kinds of crazy **** and I get so frustrated... if I go slow and use a more pressure so more of my finger hits each key it's fine... but I'm typing way slow then and it's just not worth it.
Another thing, I require good Microsoft Exchange support... I can get around not having direct calendar support, but the fact that forwarded emails show up as attachments pisses me off to... I'm close to sending this sucker back (I'm in CA and have up to 30days)... soooo frustrating.

Check out TouchDown for you exchange support, it is brilliant! It is well worth the money, but if you really don't want to pay for it, it has a 5 day trial, and you can re-use that trial as many times as you want, you just have to set it back up again.
For texting, try out the voice-to-text software, really good! As well, if you keep it and root, you can get some much better keyboards really easily, and I want to say even without root you can get the some of them(not sure what is currently available for keyboards, haven't looked into it much yet).
Of course, if the phone isn't your cup of tea, it isn't your cup of tea.
Hi All,
I know this is a HD2 forum, but I was just looking for some opinions on the new Dell Streak now on o2.
I am pleased with o2's phone releases since losing exclusivity on the iphone, and this recent release is quite impressive (and huge!).
Anyway, thoughts please...comparisons etc.
Thanks.
i was looking at that today..
i was considering getting rid of my hd2 for it..but then again..my pockets arent big enough for that phone lol..
so i decided to jsut stick with the hd2 untill they can port android on it or tmobile gets another android device with a 1ghz processor
too big , low quality plastic easily scratches, lower ram ,only landscape
Dell are calling this a tablet to be in the same class as the iPad. So considering the streaks screen is only .7 inches bigger than a hd2's what does that class our device as? A mobile phone, a PDA or a tablet? By Dells reconing it would be a tablet but the streak is really nothing more than a PDA with a phone module. If you look at it this way i'd rather keep my HD2.
I would like to have a play with one to see what its like, but according to the specs, its is huuuge! Would dwarf my HD2.
My feelings are I have had my HD2 for about 8 months now and it is still top end smartphone on the market. Not many other phones I have owned I can say that about. Roll on the next 8 months!
Thanks for the comments so far. I do not think that the Streak's screen size is big enough to warrant calling it a tablet, also, the casing around the device just makes it bigger than it needs to be IMO.
IMHO, I feel that the HD2 is still the best device on the market simply because no two look alike once XDA possesses your soul, and I am still interested in it 8 months on.
Come on competitors, what else can you throw at us? Try harder!
This is exactly the sort of device that I'd replace my HD2 with IMO. Rather than trade down for something with a smaller screen, because lets face it, I don't think any HD2 owners would ever consider doing this after experiencing such ease and clarity with a bigger screen, so the only option is to upgrade in size, and this device certainly ticks the boxes for me.
I love my HD2 and everything that I've been able to do with it since reading & putting into practice all the tweaks that I've learnt of this site, but I'm now feeling like enough is enough as miss the android feeling as it's more 'with the times' than WM. Android itself is growing at an alarming rate and will no doubt be the number 1 mobile OS in a very short time, and the dell streak is the perfect device to complement it.
On a slightly lesser note, it's a shame the device didn't ship with 2.1 or 2.2 but I guess at the time of production, 1.6 was version on offer. I also think the price is good, so selling the HD2 and putting a few quid in seems well worth it.
Too big.
The step from HD2 with 4.3" and thin frame to 5" and thick border is the one that kills convenience and portability for not much. The HD2 is very comfortable yet just fits well in the pocket, but nothing bigger would, and on the other hand 0.7" don't change much in usability.
Android might be the (only?) interesting point.
Just played with 1 in store today for about 10'
It's really huge, not fit in pocket absolutely.
But the screen and colors somehow amazing. With TFT screen, the screen is like a bigger one of HD2.
At 1st, I like the way Dell skin the homescreen, smooth and fast. We can choose how many homescreen, and manage the background apps (somehow).
No double tap, just pinch to zoom when browsing, got flash too.
5mp camera seem not so good.
Looks good apart from it being landscape only. I prefer to hold devices in portrait unless viewing photos/movies, so this alone rules it out for me
Just done some more research and it appears that the Dell does have an accelerometer so should work in both landscape and portrait, can anyone confirm this? Can you type etc in portrait?
didnt know it was landscape only, I am sure this will change with an update though. I have to say I was tempted but I think android has a way to go yet, it hasnt even got a decent video player yet - coreplayer may change that soon though... (dont hold your breath though)
I want one. Hoped I could purchase one from the UK but I would have to move there to do so. Got to wait a month. I hate waiting for anything.
Diane
I'm really tempted by the Streak now. I love huge screen and rarely make phone calls, but I love Winmo too. It's hard to say goodbye with my HD2
I like big screens but the dell has a little too much unused extra dimension for me. I'll wait for the Sony Ericsson 5.5 inch android phone
Actually probably not, HTC will probably have a 5.5 inch out first with minimal bezel like the hd2, and I'd want to get that one.
I have been trying to replace my iphone for about one year. I haven't found anything where the plastic is as nice and I like the way everything looks on the the iphone screen. Tried a few WinMo phones, but everything always looked so TEENY on the screen. A few weeks ago I bought the Nexus One. For a day or two I considered selling it and moving on to the next device, but little by little I am liking it. [I wish the screen was bigger.] I was considering the Dell. I like the Android o/s - **LOVE** Swype. I am getting very good at it now. I had a tough time typing on the Nexus, but with Swype my 'Swypos' are minimal !!
I have Tmobile. Not sure what other phones I could use. Want to stick with Android though.

And to think that I was thinking of getting a screen protector for this bad boy.
I took my friend to go get one yesterday, well what a joke, the guys in O2 aren't allowed to sell it sim free (in my town anyway), they didn't have one on show and we wanted to see it and have a play we both had to put our HD2's behind the counter so they would let us play with it for 5 whole mins (WOW).
So car-phone whorehouse we went 6 of the guys in their didn't even no what it was, even though there was a big poster on the wall, the one guy in there that could help, said yes we sell it sim free £429 i thought thats not bad considering, so he go's in the back to get one, comes out all red faced I'm so sorry guys we haven't even got it in stock yet, were not getting it till next week when the Dell rep comes, (What a joke surely you should no if you have that brand new device in the store yet), so as we walked out laughing we though Phones4U, hahahahaha never had such fun in my life spoke to a girl in there she just look puzzled, then the manager came over, he asked what we wanted explained what it was showed him the leaflet and he said were not getting that phone mate tbh were a sh%t store and just laughed. So he didn't get one went home and ordered one on-line, morale of the story don't go shopping in a poxy town like mine.
After playing with the device got to say it is fun, but
Too Big to use as a phone
landscape only sucks edit(turns out Paul confirmed its not)
you're gonna have to use a headset of some form to take calls
screen is tuff as boots.
I'll stick to the HD2 thanks
The HD 2 was and IS the best Smartphone on the market TODAY, until the HD3 comes
HTC has the most experience in building WM-devices and Android ones and - except obviously raped and misprogrammed Network-Provider-ROMS such as O2, Vodafone, T-mobile - has the most stable performance. I bought mine with HTC-stock-rom, and since ROM 1.48 (and the great mods from the geniouses here at XDA) no freeze occured ever. It is serving me without any flaw all over the world, and this is exactly the same experience that I always had with my Touch HD.
@hoss_n2
You know what you really do post a lot of rubbish on this forum and seem to be seriously misinformed to so I'll answer you points.
too big,
Maybe for you it is but that's just your personal opinion after all for many others it's a great or even perfect size.
low quality plastic easily scratches
Really and you know this how? I played with one today and it's a great quality plastic and feels really good and it's to early to say if it scratches easily or not as no one has owned one long enough. If you mean the screen as well that's also wrong as that's made of Gorilla Glass and their was a video of someone attacking it with a ball point pen and no damage was done check YouTube or Engadget to see it.
Oh and that's not just MO either but that of others that have already got their Streak which includes Paul from MoDoCo. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive.
lower ram
Really as Paul has just been running some tests on it seeing as he has already Rooted it yup in under 1 day it's Rooted and it's showing 408mb of free Ram so where do you get this low Ram idea from then.
only landscape
LMAO just wrong nothing more needs to said here it works in landscape and Portrait modes don't believe me read this post by Paul on MoDoCo where he confirms for some one that the seesmic app goes full screen both in portrait and landscape ?
In fact read the whole thread for his first thoughts on the Streak.
http://android.modaco.com/content/d...-streak-thoughts-dump-got-questions-ask-here/
Having now seen one hands on as opposed to just pictures or videos it is not as big as i thought it was going to be, now if it's to big for you only you can decide but it has to be bigger then an HD2 to fit in a 5" screen.
Marc
I have had my Streak for a couple of months now and when i first got it the screen seemed HUGE.
Now whilst im still really enjoying it im wondering if i could cope with an even bigger screen................cough.....cough....Galaxy....cough...tab ....ahem
anyone else thinking along these lines?
I dont feel embarassed holding up the streak to my head on the phone and tbh no one has ever looked at me funny when i have done so.
I really dont use my phone much to talk so the size issue isnt that much of a big deal
i still love my streak and i dont fancy paying out £700 for a tab but 7 inches of froyo and flash goodness is tempting.
The Ipad IS TOO BIG!
You should try samsung galaxy tab and viewsonic viewpad 7 both of them is 7" screen and will be coming out soon.
Coming to the Streak from a 7" apad I'd say the 5" is better. The 7" screen is good but still just too big to be pocket portable. If you've a bag or a case to put it in then fine, it's a good working size. 2.2 Froyo might be a problem though if what I read is true. Froyo won't work well on tablets, it was designed for smart phones, even on the steak I see a lot of apps that just don't cope well with the extra screen acreage.
youve become desensitized. go hold an iphone for about 3 minutes. itll seem microscopic and then when you hold your streak again itll feel huge again. and youll be happy you got your streak.

funny you should say that but i compared my streak to a friends i phone yesterday and it did seem huge
we then drew up a template of a Galaxy tab using the measurements and that seemed very big.
Basically the whole streak is about the size of the Tabs screen!
im not un happy with my streak but as a rare talker on mobiles and i do put my streak in a bag it might be worth a thought esp with phone capability to consider the Tab.
when i want to carry a phone in my pocket i get out my old Hero i.e. in the evenings

i did just that when i was out shopping, popped into the apple store and compared iphone4 against the streak......i just couldnt put up with such a small screen..
It's never felt that big to me.
I was playing with my advantage the other day, 640x480 5" screen it's bigger than the streak.
How far ahead of the game HTC were with that device, pity they didn't go with Bluetooth keyboard for it, could happily use that and the case it came with the streak then.. except four the magnets everywhere. .
Anyway the steak it's prefect size to me sometimes I wish it were a bit taller in landscape orientation, so I could see a bit more, but otherwise it's fantastic!

Oh dear that doesn't sound good
dell's size is quite alright, it was not as monsterous as I have expected. i don't know about the 7 inch tab though, might be a bit too big for me
I held my old HD2 the other day and that seemed big at the time, but now it feels small! I remember when i got my HD2, I was playing with it for a few days and then played with my Xperia X1 again and I was like 'whoa this is TINY!' and when i got the X1I though it was big . Weird isn't it.
My sister called for my mum yesterday and I handed my mum the Streak, she didnt know what it was! I was like, its a phone mum, she just held it flat in her hands in front of her and was like 'Hello hello?!', as if she thought it was automatically on speaker phone or something, old people make me laugh!
i played with my touch pro today. ^_^ how did i survive? a two and a half in screen. and i used to watch videos on it! its smaller tall than my streak is wide. still, my streak doesnt feel as big as it did the first day i had it. i dont think i would like a phone that is bigger than the streak, but maybe a larger screen. there is alot of bezel on the streak.

So, I was one of the idiots who soft-bricked my phone by refusing to listen to common sense and have patience. I went ahead and installed various ROMs all while knowing that my Vibrant was hardware locked. Eventually, it caught up with me and I got in a situation I couldn't get out of. I had to get a new phone and got a loaner from T-mobile for a few dyas while I waited. Using that old, crappy phone really made me long for my Vibrant back.
Well, it just came yesterday (not hardware locked!) and I started trying a few of the different ROMs in this forum. Currently on Bionix 1.8. On my first Vibrant I had used one of those Invisible Shields, but as I look at my new one I'm thinking I may forego the shield and ride bare back (I am using a rubber case - still talking about phone here). I'm amazed at the how beautiful the display is on this phone and I think the shield actually cut down on how stunning this phone is. Plus, I've read how durable this gorilla glass is and it really doesn't smear. So, I may live to regret it, but I'm gonna give it a shot. This phone really is a work of art. Maybe it's all relative because i had to deal with that loaner, but I am so glad to have my Vibrant back.
I really like this phone too and it only seems to get better with time. We've got a fantastic dev community who consistently produce quality work, we've got great individuals in the forums who help others with questions, etcetera. Sure there are going to be bugs along the way but that happens...every major software/firmware producer put out patches for software (Just think of Apple & Microsoft).
I'm using a Realook SP on my Vibrant. It looks like nothing is there and many people don't even know I have a screen protector on my phone.

ive also heard that realook takes nothing away from the vibrant....as much as im obsessed with the screen quality of this phone, it just makes me feel very uneasy to think the screen is butt naked
Well this thing uses gorilla glass so its not really needed to have a screen protector. It will withstand a lot except for a hardcore hit and even a SP wont protect you from that.
Actually, I've heard people reporting that moderately sharp objects can scratch the Vibrant screen; the Gorilla Glass is more useful against impact/cracking than scratching.
Also, +1 on the Realook not taking away from screen quality. I got my Vibrant used and it had a SP on it that made it look sorta fuzzy; I finally decided to try a different SP and got a Realook, and WOW what a difference.
Steinheil Ultra Crystal is also pretty good. I am using it atm but I can't decide between that and the Realook. The Realook seems clearer when there are no smudges, and seems like it fits just a tiny bit better (it seems slightly bigger and thus seems to cover more exactly), but smudges easier than the Steinheil and the smudges are more noticeable.
Thanks for the suggestions. I may try one these other SP, but I still can't get over how great the screen is without one. And unlike my old SP, the gorilla glass does not smudge. What little it does, I can simply wipe on my shirt and it looks sparkling new. With my old SP, I had to use special lens or LCD glass cleaner.
This phone sure is beautiful, and I have had a really hard time trying to find a SP that doesnt distort the image quality but would hold up to the abuse I regularly subjected a phone to. ReaLook SP had my vote for the longest time, but one day out of curiosity I tried trimming down a SP intended for my TRIMBLE unit... and it has my vote... it is crystal clear, and made from some sort of window cling plastic that has yet to recieve damage from my haphazard phone manners. Just my .02, but dont be afraid to try out several different products, after all the 30-40 bucks you spend finding the right SP, is well worth it on a 500 dollar phone.
Thanks for the infomation
Thanks for the review/input on the SP's The original ones I got from TMO were about the worst I have ever used. I will try the ones all of you have mentioned
I would recommend a screen protector. I used mine completely bare for a few months, always being very careful only to put it into pockets with no other objects, and making sure that there was no grit on the screen before using it. It still started developing hairline scratches. You have to hold the phone to the right angle under a light to see them, but they are there. I've ordere a TPU case now, and I'm using one of those ultra cheap, 5 for $1 eBay screen protectors. It works fine, doesn't seem to detract from the screen, and feels smooth and pleasant like the original glass.

I hear you loud and clear.
Going through a near identical experience right now, except I will be without my phone for 2 weeks minimum (has to ship to US and back). I really can't believe how much I'm missing my phone. Really amazes me that there are so many complaints about the Vibrant. It's an absolutely fantastic device once you have it setup correctly. I wouldn't trade it for any other phone in the world.
2-3 days was the turn around time at T-mobile?
Yes, but I had to pay for expedited shipping $20 vs. $10 for 7 days,
I haven't gone through your experience, but one of my buddies was trying to sell me a his MyTouch slide for a good price and as soon as he turned it on I was like "ohhh.... is that what the screen looks like?" lol. For anyone who thinks this screen isn't all that great go play with another phone for a little hahaha

I originally wanted an Evo but got a Vibrant instead when the Evo was sold out everywhere. But I am loving it.
I was in a car with 2 Evo owners and we had our phones all running Google Navigation (whew.. one of the times my GPS worked before JI6 . My screen looked so much more colorful and crisper than theirs. It wasn't even close.
After numerous unwanted factory resets, a bundled app that doesnt work at all, the lettering on the back peeling away, random FCs, and now a completely dead streak, I've finally lost my patients. I think the internal sd's fried, but I dont give a sh*t any more. I loved the idea of the streak, but I just don't think its refined, or particularly well built. I don't expect Dell to upgrade from 2.2 ever, the customer service line in the UK is premium rate, and the US line (which is free) gets you (eventually) through to a girl that seems to take pleasure in making it glaringly obvious that she couldn't give a flying f*ck.
I tried to love my streak, but unfortunately, its been an epic fail from start to finish. I've only had it a month or two, and now i'm left with a black slab of glass and plastic (that i'm about to send back). Now considering getting a nexus s.
Sorry for the rant, like I said, I love the streak in theory, i'm just super disappointed with the build quality and lack of attention to detail.
I love mine too and so far I am being lucky (knock on wood) but I agree with you,it is a fragile product with "funny little things".I will keep it for a few more months, after that I will get rid of it.I do not see it as a solid product, this is just my point of view...I am sure some other people will see it as a rock solid device.
Totaly agree! Love my Streak as well but the quality is is wack as f*ck
Not sure what your all crying about. My streak is solid and built well. Sure go pick up a nexus s with its cheap rubber battery door.
Not sure what you guys are expecting... ever have a blackberry and see how poorly made those are?

Er...one of the few things RIM does well is hardware.
On the other hand, I constantly have to.reset my streak because the screen is unresponsive.
At least the Nexus S gets updated. His long did it take Dell to update the AT&T Streak?

What does that have to do with build quality? It's apples and oranges when you compare a Nexus and any other phone when it comes to how quick they are updated.
Whether you think that the Streak is well built or poorly built it is amazing. It is the only device at it's size in it's niche (both phone and tablet). The engineers had to try to make the phone as small as possible but still accommodate the 5 inch screen. The thinness of the Streak was probably intended to offset some of the size in the other dimensions. There is little protection on the long sides of the screen to make it as narrow as possible.
IMO they did well if you consider all of the factors that they had to work with. With most things after they are used in the real world it is much easier to see where they could have done better.
A larger device might have been a tougher device since the screen could have been thicker and more protection could have been added on the long sides of the phone. The logo coming off on some phones may be irritating but using the wrong glue or process to secure it doesn't cause the device to lose a lot of build points for me. As it is the Streak is the best cell phone I have ever owned.
i have my streak for 5 months now and the first thing i did was puchasing the hard plastic back cover from dell..it has a plastic screencover as well..a well spend investment cause big toys will break easely.
Last week, i had an iphone 4 in my hands and a samsung galaxy..and both guys were very impressed with the build quality of my dell. So impressed they want to puchase one.
a big glass bottle of coke will break easier then a small one if you drop it.
and god yeah after tweaking my streak..i think it's the best toy i bought after my htc artemis a few years ago
quality issue? I've dropped my streak naked twice about 4 feet high and still no scratches, no problems whatsover.. now I'm running dj steves rom, and its the best phone I've ever owned.. and I'm coming from blackberry 9700 then to iphone 4..

Due to issues with my O2 contract I sold my Streak and bought a Nexus S. I loved the Streak to bits but have a personal and strict no gadget twice policy, hence the Nexus S.
Firstly, I would still recommend the Streak to anyone who wanted something that bit bigger than the norm.
Secondly, I'll jump to defend the myth of the poor build of the Nexus S. The battery door certainly isn't rubber. Yeah it is light in the hand but so what, didn't a low weight once constitute a positive selling point?
