Hi there,
i m not yet a Iconia A500 owner but i m thinking about buying one. i read a lot of tests and iconia seems the right one for me and i think i would be happy with it for this pricelevel.
How ever, ... i read in different tests that this tab would be better if it would playback standard video formats.
What is the meaning with this ... ??
can´t believe that standard formats should not play. i mean there a tons of developers building their roms and in none of them i read about "added video codec pack" or something like that.
Would be fine to get a feedback with your experience about videoplayback on iconia.
One more question: is it possible to get android 2.1/2.2 Roms running on honeycomb 3.0... what i mean: Is the honeycomb system of iconia downwards compatible to "older" install files .apk ?? (Want to install few things what i ve on my android 2.2 phone)
best greets,.. hope you can help me
Psy
Video playback performance depends on the player app you are using. The best video player for the Iconia is the DicePlayer. You can get it from the Android Market for about 5 US-$. This player plays DivX and h.264 MKVs (up to 720p) flawlessly.
Best regards, maris
Not all old .apk's are compatible with Honeycomb. Some of them don't fill the whole screen. In 3.2 it's possible to make them fit but they look ugly.
The apps that doesn't work on Honeycomb are not in the tablet market. But you can try to load them with your phone and put it on the tablet sd card.
Then install it and see if they work, some of them do.
But you will find the most important apps on the tablet market and they work well.
Sorry for my bad english, i'm from Austria

Hi, several of we GT 10.1" tab owners over in the tab specific area are looking into adding a external micro SD to our tabs. I am hoping that we might find some more expertise and input in this section of the forum.
The ongoing thread we are discussing the mod in can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600661, but hopefully we can merge the threads, or somehow keep things straight, but it seems this may be the more appropriate forum section.
Brief recap is that it appears the early/pre-release GT-P7500 had an external SD card. My later model GT-P7510 has the associated area on the MOBO unpopulated. I found the connectors, the OP in the thread found the factory SD card holders. I used my tab for a test, soldered the the connector on, and early indications are it is not functioning. So far I haven't been able to dig back into it, but common consensus is that the unpopulated area near the SD reader connector is needed. I have a lot of experience with simpler analog electronics, and analog design, but to repopulate the needed components with no idea of where to start is beyond the scope of my abilities.
We have the GT-P7500 service manual, at least most of it I think. The MOBO photos in the manual show the area populated, but the photos are to low resolution to gain any useful data. I found some supposedly leaked FCC photos of the tab disassembled pre-release. It also shows the SD card area populated, and this one shows the SD card holder as well, but again low resolution.
Currently we are hoping that maybe the very early HW revisions of the 3g GT-p7500 may have had the SD card area populated, and possibly one of you owners could help us.
If anyone has any input, or can help build the circuit from the ground up I am happy to provide any testing/data/pinouts I can.
On a side note-- does anyone know how many times I can disassemble my tab without ruining the case?
Thanks in advance folks!
Jason Campbell
In addition to any missing components, you need to figure out which SDHCI interface of the CPU that is hung off of and add it to the platdata:
https://github.com/pershoot/galaxy-2636/blob/ics/arch/arm/mach-tegra/board-p4wifi-sdhci.c#L296
Looks like 3 is the internal eMMC, 0 is the wifi chip (BCM4329 and 4330 are SDIO wifi chipsets), 1 and 2 are not used.
I too have been toying around with this idea. Looks like I'm not alone in thinking this tab would rock with a microsd. Only you guys are way farther ahead than me! Also I know for a fact that the gtab 10.1 v2 that's coming out sometime this year will have an SD slot. And it looks like little else that's different. Maybe when one of us gets our hands on it we can see on the inside where things are populated or not.

Turns out that you're most likely wrong on this - all evidence (including the recent source release I believe) indicates the Tab2 10.1 will be OMAP4-based just like the Tab2 7.0 is.
interesting thanks
Looks like I will finally have some free time to open my tab up again. I plan to ring out the SD card holder to the connector, and then on out from there. I will go at least as far as the unpop area if that is indeed where it leads. While I have it open, do you folks have any suggestions as to other testing or mapping to do? I appreciate the input so far-- I don't really know much about the software side, but we can burn that bridge if/when we get there. Will keep you all posted.
Later,
Jason

Hi! Do you know that if you add a sd-card extension, you must develop new drivers and kernels? And this could probably make you lose your warranty...
SD card
why do manufactures insist on leaving sd card slots off the build? doesnt seem like it would cost to much include one.
thanks for this
Hi,
My friend has a 10.1 GT 7500,
He bought an external adapter for sdcard.
Perhaps you can use the layout schemas from such a device to discover what you need to make it work internally.
Its probaply the same "signal wires" but now abvailable on the external connector.
Hope this helps/.

Yes, thank you. The tab has been rooted and running experimental roms from ~6hrs after I bought it. Warranty has been void for quite a while...

I doubt so much that it is the hardware costs, although it would add up to a significant amount, but rather due to the desire to sell the more costly tabs with more internal memory. After all, why would the you buy a 64gb tab for $200 more than the 16gb one, when you could throw in a 32gb card for $30? It seems pretty clear in this case, Sammy had developed the tab with external SD. There are lots of photos floating around of the pre-release tabs with slots. There is some evidence that they planned this nearly to the last minute, as we are buying the factory holders which "don't exist" on ebay. Unless they could not get the SD reader working properly or had more issues than the time solving was worth, then I think all things point toward this being a plain and simple money move.

I appreciate the input, I have the Sammy autherized adapters. These all use the USB OTG protocol, and I think it is unlikely that the hardware will be the same. I will deffenitely investigate this though.
Thanks,
Jason
If you don't succeed with the adapters you could do what i'm trying to do with the Kindle Fire. I'm building in a microsd adapter for use with USB host.

I pre-ordered the 1GB version of the MK802 ICS thumbstick today from Amazon for $70, can't wait for it to arrive to start playing around with it.
As with any other device, a custom ROM may well bring out some even greater possibilities for this great little piece of kit.
Any of our ROM devs got their eye on this one?

I'd like to second this, Ive ordered the 1gb version as well, can't wait til it arrives and to start monkeying around with it.
I´ve also ordered one (already shipped ) and can´t wait to start messing it up
Having a working CWM Version would be a good start, so we can make backups ^^
Mine got here today! Playing with it hooked up to monitor at the moment. I can't wait to take it home and plug it in to TV.
I Think about order this too and I love to see custom rom on this, sound fun!!
I got mine yesterday, but I can't get it to recognize my xbox 360 controller through a wireless dongle, which works fine in Linux otherwise. Anyway, although I'm disappointed with it so far due to sluggishness, i can only hope it's a software issue and they update it soon. Someone has already got Ubuntu running on it.

what version did you get, the 512 or the 1gig?
I've got a pre order 1g version on order from amazon as well, so watching this thread too
Mine is running Ubuntu now so I think the whole rom thing is now settled and obsolete. More info here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/installing-linux-on-mk802-948695/
In short, dd image, do a depmod, update apt and install your favorite programs.
Mine is now running dropbear ssh and lighttpd www with a mediawiki install. Best thing is I had that running under android and it was slower then now under Ubuntu.

Sorry for slow response. I unfortunately got the 512MB version. I assume the 1GB version will be significantly better when running Ubuntu.

That pretty much depends on your memory consumption, I have a 512 and it is running smooth and noticable faster then Android. Just go for lightweight like dropbear instead of openssh or LDX instead of Gnome etc. Here is a nice link to create a fresh rootfs where you can built upon. http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/04...image-for-mele-a1000-allwinner-a10-based-stb/

I use my wireless logitech mouse and microsoft keyboard with a USB hub, works great!
There are 2 USB ports but one of them is a mini-usb , used for charging (unless you plug it in the wall outlet). It comes with a usb-mini to USB host too.
These things are going to be big. There is a kickstarter project running for a similar device with integrated HDMI plug, though only a 1ghz processor, rather than 1.5ghz. No 1gb ram option either.. Take a look on their site and search 'android', Pocket TV will come up.
I've gone for the MK802 1gb model on preorder. The interesting thing from the Kickstarter project (apart from that cool air mouse) is the use of the Google TV remote app to control it using another android device. I've grabbed the Google TV remote APK, however when testing it, I couldn't connect to another android device. I can only assume they have found a way to 'spoof' the mini ICS PC stick as a Google TV. How? Read something about the Anymote protocol?
I like the idea of my Nexus S working the pointer and pull up keyboard...
REQUEST: Lets get an MK802 or Mini PC section up on XDA!!
I got mine 1gb
This little thing is cool as hell, Runs everything. Lets talk more about custom ROMs and Ubuntu. What version of Ubuntu are you guys running? Also, any good ideas for apps if one would like to stay with Android?
I saw this device today and i am excited from the specification and the price its coming with.
Does anyone, who has already has it, can tell me his experience??
Can you browse in a decent way?2-3 tabs open maybe? If the page has flash the scrolling is smooth?
I want to buy it for a gift to my parents
mk802
I just got mine direct from China. Working great with fly mouse/keyboard except when you go into recovery. I could only scroll up and fown the 5 selections but could not find any key to select. I was going to install 4ext but backed off as it couldn't detect device. There is certainly a need for a new forum and a developer. These may be the forefront of pc's to come.
New recover img for MK802
http://db.tt/2VRoKtc1
So does anyone know how to use this file? It took 20 attempt to download and was really slow, but no instructions.
in a few days I get a mk802
we must compile and run the kernel module uinput.ko
this is necessary to start DroidMote Server inside it.
with DroidMote this device would be the maximum.
i have a working compiled uinput.ko for a10 allwinner 3.0.8 kernel, in the meantime if anyone wants to try to load with the command insmod, get the module at this post:

Does Galaxy tab 4 t231 have USB otg support? If not, can it be enabled by any method? Planning to buy this tablet. Please answer.. Thank you for your time

Would really love to know this too. It's my understanding previous versions of the Galaxy Tab support USB OTG, and would love to enable it on the Tab 4.
On my smartphone I have an option in settings to turn OTG on and off, unfortunately no option seems to exist on my Tab4. Assuming the Tab 4 has hardware support for it, how would I go about enabling OTG?
Bump...
Would LOVE a solution as well~!:good:
Ran USB Diagnostics. As of now there is no support whatsoever but a custom ROM or Kernel may be able to enable it. I suppose there is a slight chance since the larger variants have OTG support and the hardware is similar.
Edit: Playing around with some OTG apps, it appears that we do not have hardware support so there's about 70-90% chance the tablet will purely not support it and trying to do so would be impossible.

I ran that same app on my Tab4 as well, unfortunately I wasn't able to understand everything the app told me so I concluded OTG support on the Tab4 was inconclusive =P
Considering OTG is supported on the other Galaxy Tab devices, what reasoning would Samsung have to not enable this feature on the Tab4 7.0? Especially if the hardware is the same (or very similar) it just doesn't make any sense to me why they wouldn't give the Tab4 7.0 OTG support as well. It's actually very frustrating in 2014 that this Tab doesn't support OTG. I am almost considering returning it solely for this reason (I haven't yet, because I'm very pleased with everything else the Tab4 has to offer).
My cheap, Chinese sub $100 android ICS tablet I bought last year had OTG support! What gives Samsung? I sort of expect more from a major brand like Samsung.

So, I may be wrong but I believe the problem may be in chip set itself, since its Marvell CPU (I never heard of this company). However, the Tab 3 also carried an older Marvell CPU, which they were able to overcome this problem with a custom Kernel. So, may be this tablet has slight chance of having OTG support but Scumbag Samsung decided that they don't the cheaper tablet to sell.

Well I'll certainly be holding out on that slight chance for OTG support lol. I was really looking forward to using my tab 4 as a second display with DSLR Controller, so you can imagine my disappointment when it didn't work =/
Either way, if a dev ends up seeing this and wants to implement this feature, let me know if I can do anything help (beta testing custom kernels) or whatever, just let me know. I'm more than willing to help move this forward, even if it ends up not working.

Also, it also supports external dac (Tested with Fiio E17) and it works with spotfiy. I'm starting to like this tablet even more .
I would like to buy this cable in order to use my Tab 4 to charge my Nexus 4. (Only need this on the road charging done when I'm on vacation, which is every 2-3 years, making buying a battery bank not worth it)
Would this cable work fine?

Please note my main objective is not accessing USB keys or HDD's, but purely use the cable to charge my phone. Accessing a USB media storage would be a bonus.

hi , i have an advent tegra note 7 tablet ( tegranote-P1640). for some strange reason it wont even ask me to update to the lolipop. it has andriod 4.4.2 on it and it says that the system is up to date. but i see alot of guys saying that they received the 5.1 update. i think the tablet is from uk. i see that it has superu on it and i installed a root checker and it said that it was rooted. i was wondering if i could manually upgrade this to 5.1 and whats the process and where to get the rom files etc? thanks
I just got one of these. It was new in the box and being an Nvidia fan , I simply had to . I have read that Lollipop was really bad on this device . This thing has a better battery than my K1 Tablet and if I can get it up to Lollipop I can run Nvidia games on it and kinda have a shield tablet again . If anyone can help by providing TWRP and the OTA for the Advent Vega Note 7 it would be awesome !
Update :
I got this upgraded to 5.1 this evening lol . It was quite an undertaking as it's an old device now and most resources are dated. Big thanks to Root Junky ( if you are reading this ) I am going to play around with this some more , see if I can get it up to 6.0 Linenage or similar . It's a nice little tablet and a nice edition to my Nvidia collection .
Good tablet but held back by 1gb ram. If only it had 2gb ram this thing would still hold its own today

Was an ace tablet, not anymore. Have had a go at sorting it then tried factory reset. No luck, takes age to boot then again to open any app. Got hold of another tablet now & just cant be bothered to attempt to root it yet again.
In future will not update ANYTHING until I see on the forums its safe to do so.

Yeah , it's too bad that L runs so poorly on this . Nvidia is probably one of the best companies I've seen for legacy support - I'm suprised they did not resolve the issues like they did with the K1 , and portable . This tablet could be salvaged with a decent rom despite having 1 GB of ram . Today I actually started it up and nothing ran on KitKat . This tablet is easily as good as the Nexus 7 2013 - which despite it's still runs and looks beautiful!

It's now back to V4.2.2 and as fast as original, almost scared to log into my google account on it until I get a decent sized SD card in it in case it gets stuffed full & seizes up lol!

Glad to hear you were able to recover this. I would really like to see a Linenage build for these despite the low ram as the battery is still pretty good and the Tegra chip can still handle some older games. These devices also still have pretty good speakers. Google is still supporting KitKat but the clock is ticking. So many great Nvidia builds that are starting to become obsolete, I hope some developers can revisit some of these.
Talking of needing a decent size sd card, just discovered the 64Gb one in my 'Googlyfied' Amazon Fire 9 a dead'un.... so that'll be x2 I'll need. Wonder if SanDisk will make good on its warranty?
