I am one of those idiots that upgraded to 2.3.4 but I had my firmware nandroid and I had created a fixed sbf incase I needed to downgrade. But I formatted my laptop so i dont have a nandroid anymore. I'm in the UK on vodafone but the phone was retail has anybody got a nandroid for this I can't remember the proper name of the sbf. It is just named firmware.sbf now due to fixing it.
Reason I need it is when my phone is ended on contract (which is soon) I'm giving my phone to my sister.
Edit: my phone was a present and my family doesn't know I modded it that's why I'm asking for a proper version as opposed to that CEE

I tried to unpack a British retail sbf. Extract CG39.smg. then repack it as system.img. I then ran md5 sum. I restore the system.img and then flash the sbf but it doesn't work. I'm no Linux expert or anything but will this method not ever work or am I doing something wrong

ok, so i have a defy i rooted it and tried to change boot logo and i misplaced the file and it wouldnt turn on or boot.
so i plug it into my pc and it is recognised by rsd lite and a white led shows up on my defy.
i go to flash a rom and it doesnt work.
it turns the little green picture red and then fails.
Any chance of me being able to actually getting it to work.
i have resarched loads of ways and nothing seems to help, hence why i posted here. thankyou
ROM (in a zip file) or SBF file? RSD Lite will only accept SBF files!
If you are using a SBF file, is the CG version greater than or equal to what you had before? For example you can't flash a Froyo SBF after flashing Gingerbread.
i used the .SBF
i was on froyo trying to flas another version of it, so i need flash a gingerbread rom?
can anyone else give me a hand?
Does it have clock work mod recovery installed
no it doesn't, im guessing its screwed?
no your not, just flash the stock froyo image (.sbf file) with rsd lite and then erase data trough stock recovery and it should start normally
ps: i used this one

If all depends on the kind of SBF that you flashed. If you have flashed a FULL sbf then you can't downgrade most likely. If you flashed a FIXED sbf then downgrading shouldn't be a problem.
I made the same mistake in the beginning but luckily I only flashed a FULL 2.2 sbf which is stable. For now I always start from this rom, get root on my phone using superoneclick, install 2ndinit, reboot into 2ndinit recovery (volume down when led turns blue) and I install the nandroid backup that I placed on My SD card using "install from zip".
It would help if you gave some more info on which sbf you flashed?

Silly me. I know exactly what I did, though. Maybe someone can help me out, please? This is my boss' phone! (no joke.. .although I did tell him stuff could happen).
Here's what happened, step by step.
1) The Atrix is from Telcel, and it was on 2.2. He told me the phone was rooted and unlocked.
2) So, I downloaded the .img files for the Orange FR version of Ginberbread (ORFR234-system.img, webtop.img, ORFR234-tegrapart-1100100.boot.img), and tried to use moto-fastboot.exe to flash them.
3) I could flash system.img and webtop.img. Tegrapart.1100100 gave me an error. So, the phone isn't unlocked.
4) I did a moto-fastboot reboot and used RSD to flash the .sbf unlocker (intl-fix-try1.sbf). Success.
5) I tried to go back to Flashboot on the phone, and I got an error message. Basically, I can only go into RSD now.
Which would be OK, I know I need to flash the original .sbf file.
The problem is - there's NO .sbf file I can go back to. Telcel's SBF is not available for download. And since I flashed the Orange France 2.3.4 system file, I'm not even sure I could go back, anyway.
So, what can I do? Can I go ahead and flash the Orange FR .sbf Gingerbread file using RSDLite? Should I do something else? At this point I don't know if the phone is unlocked (please, let it be so).
I suppose I only get one shot at fixing this issue, so I'll need any help I can get. Thanks!
Yes you can. I have flashed versions from other carriers before without problem. I would stay away from the AT&T version though. However, do not flash any froyo SBF, you will brick your (boss) phone. If after flashing the phone, you do not have internet access, check the apn settings. If you flash the unlock SBF than flash a stock SBF, the phone will be 'relocked'. Not in an actual sense, just that the unlocked text is gone, and fastboot will not accept any unsigned files for flashing. Why did you even unlock the phone for? Flashing SBF files do not require a unlocked phone. If after flashing the SBF file, you decide you need a unlocked bootloader, just re-flash the unlocking SBF file. Hope this helps!

Thank you! I used a Brazil .sbf file and the phone is back! I'll unlock and upgrade now
I recently bought Defy+ with 2.3.5. and i want to install ICS but i don't understand a thing about SBF files, Nandroid stuff. Rooting and installing custom ROM-s doesn't seem to be a problem only this thing about upgrading and downgrading SBF is what I dont understand.
Can anybody explain me in simplest way what are SBF files and how to put ICS on my phone.
This is what SBF's are all about.
And this is how to flash CM9 ICS.
Ok, but would i be able to put my stock ROM back after i install that ICS?
Just stay away from flashing SBF files and you'll be fine and will always be able to go back to stock.
NB! The only SBF you should ever flash, is your STOCK SBF! If you obey this rule, you'll be just fine
P.S. This post was written in font size 7 for a reason and the reason is not that I'm yelling. It's just because many people here listen to other newby's, advising them to flash this or that SBF and then can't go back. It's for your own good, guys
First go and find your stock(faktory)rom then look if you have red(bayer) or green (SOC) camera lens
root your phone
install 2nd init or use twrp from goo-inside or goomanager app
Boot into cwm recovery
Make a backup of your stock rom
Now you can go back via recovery system to your own setup whenever you want to
Just wipe data , look for the right kernel and restore your backup
You can flash your orginal sbf with rsd lite whenever you want and your phone is nearley like a new one.
Maybe some infos are stored on phone what you have flashed on

So I do this:
1. Root phone
2. Install 2nd init
3.Backup of my stock ROM
And than install ICS like it is explained here.
And if I want to return stock ROM I just find backup file on my computer and install it with rsd lite.
No need to backup your original ROM - that's what your stock SBF is for By flashing it, you will return your original system, that was installed by Motorola and will remove 2nd init, root and all traces of ever manipulating your phone

That's the safest way! However, you can't always find your original SBF (e.g. my original rom is 45.0.74.MB526.Retail.en.DE, 4.5.1-134 DFP-74).
You can download the available SBF for defy+ here: h**p://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordanplus/list.php
So if i want to take my phone to service i just download 2.3.5 Motorola Stock ROM and flash it like normal.
What is difference between flashing ROM and SBF files?
And you told me that only SBF i should flash is my stock SBF but want i change my SBF files when i flash ICS?
I have a nandroid of the stock rom that came with my phone.. how do I see what build version it is? Im on cm7.2. I cant restore it because of hash errors. So if i find out build info i can flash that particular sbf

If you flash just the ROM, the kernel and the other files will be the same and most important you won't burn eFuses, so you'll be able to come back to older version.

Auris 1.6 vvt-i told you to flash your stock SBF to avoid burning eFuses and because in this way you will never have problems with warranty (some versions could be not available in your country). You don't need to flash full SBF before upgrading to ICS, just check the kernel and flash the right version.
My question is simple: Can I restore only the 2.3.5 System nandroid backup (BL5) over a Defy+ width a 2.3.6 full SBF (BL7)?
No you cannot downgrade..

Even if just select the system partition to restore?
My problem is that the Defy's USB port is broken. As the phone is still under warranty and I got it from an operator (Movistar Spain) I want sent for repair with an official ROM but I have only 2 backups:
A backup of the original ROM (2.3.5 BL5 Movistar Spain)
A backup of the current ROM (2.3.6 BL7 EU Retail - NOT Movistar Spain)
I've searched for a Movistar Spain 2.3.6 BL7 nandroid backup, but I can´t find any.
Do I have any other alternative to leave it as close as "official"?

I think you're stuck in your current ROM, the BL7 leaves you with no choices to back to your branded ROM, and did you searched if your brand releases a BL7 sbf?

Yes, Movistar Spain released a BL7 SBF, but as the Defy usb port is broken, I can´t flash it.
I think the only option I have is to get a Movistar Spain BL7 nandroid backup... but I can´t find it.

Well, that leaves with chances then, i think you can make a nandroid from the sbf, at least you can restore the system, CG39 file from the sbf... here is a post about that, maybe can help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1031194

Uhmmm, it can be an option. I believe I can mount CG39 file as an ext2 loop file system in Linux and then package it in tar format and generate the MD5 sums so I can restore it with CWM.
I´ll try it tomorrow and I´ll write here the results.
Thanks for the idea.
It works!!!!!!!
Finally I created a nandroid backup from a SBF and restored it with CWM. The steps I did was:
Depack SBF with Motorola Android Firmware (De)packer by Skrilax_CZ 1.3
In linux, mount CG39.smb as ext3 loop file system over a folder named "system"
Package "system" folder in tar format (system.ext3.tar)
Rename CG35.smg as boot.img
Rename CG47.smg as recovery.img
Rename CG61.smg as devtree.img
Calculate MD5 sums for the modified files (system.ext3.tar,boot.img,recovery.img and devtree.img)
Copy modified files over an existent CWM backup
update nandroid.md5 file with new calculated MD5s
Restore from Advance restore (I restored one by one and only system, boot, recovery and devtree)
Restart the phone
Now the Defy have the official version of the operator and without trace of sndinit or superuser (root), So I hope I will not have problems with warranty.
Thanks to all
