[Q] Microphone not working? (no sound) - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi, I just stumbled upon an HD2 on Sunday. Very nice phone!
Unfortunately, it seems the microphone isn't working. I have no sound on video recordings and people can't hear me on phone calls unless I use a headset.
I checked it with a phone call when the phone was on stock WinMo and the issue is the same now after I've hacked it and put Typhoon_CM7 on it (nand).
Is there anything I can try to test if this is hardware related? Is it hard to replace the mic if that is necessary?
I searched the forums as well as google but didn't find anything that helped. I'd really like the phone to be fully functional so any help or suggestions are welcome.
TIA

You can assume with confidence that the issue is hardware related if the same thing happens regardless of what you flash or install on to it.

It probably is
If u are not getting sound on the stock windows mobile 6.5 and not even on the android, it is sure that the problem is hardware related. You should go to a HTC center to get it fixed.
Hope it helps.
Give me a thanks if you found this post useful

Thanks for your replies. Any idea how hard it is to replace the mic?

Broken Vibrate?

I got my blackstone yesterday. Excitedly opened it up, fiddled with it a while, and flashed a new rom. It was a while before i realised that the phone woudlnt vibrate. Im pretty sure its a hardware fault, but just wanted to check here to make sure I havent missed something.
The phone wont vibrate, even when being called / txted with vibrate mode on. I also understand the hardware buttons are sposed to have some kind of haptic feedback or minivibrate, but this doesent work either.
I searched through all the settings, and couldnt find any magical turn on vibrate feature buttton. Vibrate notification is definately turned on, and so is the vibrate profile. I inittialy installed Panoshas Black Pearl rom. I tried a hard reset, and then also flashed the Dutty rom, and finally the original rom to see if it that worked.
Can anyone point out an obvious mistake ive made? Or am I gonna have to send my lovely blackstone back?
Thnx in advance.
Hmmm...you've already tried flashing a new rom and if you still have the same problem, send it in. It's still spanking new, shouldn't be a problem getting it rectified....or better yet ....replaced!
Was it vibrating when you recieve it, on it's original ROM ?

I only noticed that it wasnt after I flashed the rom, so altho im fairly certain i dont remember it ever vibrating, i cant be absolutely certain.

thnx for your response, i think ill probably do that.
its pretty annoying to have to send it back already lol, but its worth it to have a working vibrate.
A Second Opinion
Yep, I got my Blackstone a week ago today and it vibrated just fine out the box. I have not flashed any new ROMs, but I have installed plenty of programs including .net 3.5 and mobilmagic button stuff and hd tweak, installed and uninstalled advanced config and a few keyboards, the list goes on. Long story short, my vibrate doesn't work either! I think this is due to my tampering with it though, I really do. Also, I saw another post where someone had the same problem, he ended up getting his to work after playing with .net 3.5, hard resetting more than once and soft resetting too. So try that, let me know what you find out! I plan to hard reset and flash new ROMs soon, so I figured maybe these problems would go away then. Oh and, anybody else have a problem where their end key doesn't end the call, ? This is such a tinkerer's toy, lol!
Probably a good warning about flashing ROMs! Did you backup your original ROM? I think you will need to restore your original ROM before you send it back for "repair". (Otherwise it is likely you will be charged for any work/replacement - justifiably!)
Before you despair, what ROM did you flash it with? Have you contacted the developer about it? It may be a setting in a tweak you don't know you've installed. Have you tried playing Tweeter (the vibration feedback when the ball collides with a wall will indicate a working/non-working vibrator).
Rather than just offer bad news to you and tell you it's your own fault, here is a helpful tut on How to backup ROM, albeit a little late maybe. It may not be all doom and gloom - some kind soul may be able to offer you their backup ROM (particular to your mobile provider) which you can use to restore it to factory default before testing for the vibrate and/or sending it back for a fix. Who is your provider and what original ROM do you need?

thanks for the tip. i fiddled with .net framework 3.5 and more hard resets, and altho i have installed hdtweak and advconfig a couple times, ive done multiple clean flashes without them and it still dont work. in fact - as i said above, im 90% sure it never did work, so im convinced its a hardware fault.
i hope yours wroks after a rom flash, but i think mine is gonna have to go back...

yeah - i definately played tweeter even before flashing any roms, and there was no vibrate - so i guess that proves it really is the hardware.
i bought my phone from mobilephonesdirect, but have my rom backed up, so should be ok.
ta for the offer tho.
Mine was the opposite, it wouldn't stop vibrating, even when switched off.
You had to take the battery out to get it to stop.

You could try and use TouchResponse. That program gives a vibration response with every touch on the screen. If not, indeed send it in.

Thanks

havent been able to get throught them on the phone yet.
ill keep you updated if you want.
I appreciate that
yes I would love for you to keep me updated, I purchased mine through ebay from addictedtophones.com, which is out of California. They seemed like nice people but they sure aren't wanting to help my broken vibrate after only 8 days! That is just sad my friend. I have also contacted UK and US support and HTC global repair service. They have indicated that they are looking in to it. Apparently the US section may not have the resources to work on the device. I requested that they replace the phone, if they couldn't work on it ASAP, the person seemed to agree and put the request forward. I hope that helps your situation. I spent too much for a broken stone!

I received my new replacement Touch HD in the mail a little bit ago, it vibrates. It must have been a hardware issue best I can tell. I just about had to send it off to HTC, but I finally got the retailer to replace it. It actually took a lot of crap just to get HTC USA GLOBAL repair center to want to accept the idea but, I called UK HTC and they called HQ in Taiwan or somewhere and got something done. So if you need some help, Ive got a few contacts that can help, anyone can just let me know. I hope this doesn't become a widespread infection.

I'd say it's probably a hardware issue. My first HD also didn't vibrate, and had to exchange for a new one. Probably some issues with one of the batches.

Mic not working on phone, but does work on other functions

Hello - I've been searching these forums and the wiki and Google too looking for a solution to this but so far, can't find a solution so hope members here can help:
I recently got another XDA Exec and a week ago, the phone mic stopped working. I know its not a hardware problem as the phone can record my voice for notes.
I've done a few hard resets and each time, nothing changes, so am truly baffled.
I'd be very grateful for any answers to this, and apologise in advance if I have missed an answer that has already been posted - I have tried searching, honest!
Cheers,
JB

Try another ROM...perhaps?
I could do, but before I attempt anything like that - something I've not done before - I wanted to figure out how to remedy it with the existing ROM, which is the O2 one installed without all of O2's own stuff.
It was working perfectly well with this ROM before....in fact the only thing I can think of that might somehow have caused this was me pairing the XDA with a bluetooth handsfree set the same day. It might just be coincidence, it might not - I can't tell.
I suppose what I'm hoping for is some guidance re any settings on the device that I don't know about that have caused this, or the necessary registry edit to remedy the problem. Its odd that the phone mic worked before then stopped working, despite hard resets with the same ROM. Forgive my naivety, but I thought ordinary user-level tweaks didn't affect the core settings of the ROM....or am I wrong?
Cheers,
JB
PS - Lower Hutt! I remember seeing it through the mist one day after catching the ferry from the South Island before heading off to Cuba Street for a boozy afternoon...
Yup, got exactly the same problem before buying my HD.
I thinked that my micro was dead and didn't try to fix it before.
Just now i got here to search another rom to test and i saw this thread highlighted
The rom on my universal is TOMAL 8.0 or more i don't exactly remember the version, what's yours ?
I will download another version to check if the micro will be alright and give some feedback

Could be a range of reasons, from some program install or addition to the software set to files going missing. Trying a new ROM or reflashing with the original (but believe me, once you try new WM6.1 You'll probably never go back) might be one of the solutions. Flashing of ROM is a piece of cake, however, I recommend reading as much as possible on the procedure and ways to remedy the unexpected situations before you begin. Everything you may possibly need and answers to all your questions is contained in a Wiki - have a look and ask questions if you cannot find answers and are completely stuck.
Heh, Lower Hutt is on the opposite side of the harbour, coming from SI.
I reflashed with TOMAL 8.9 and micro works very well now
i readed too fast yesterday and didn't see that you're using the original rom, like enigma1nz suggest you, i suggest you too to try a 6.1 rom, it's really great and improve a lot the speed/touch felling/etc for the universal.
Plus it's really easy to flash a rom, it's not necessery to read a lot of documentation,
you just need to connect your universal to pc with activesync (4.5)
and launch the exe file from the rom

Microphone on HD2 stopped working

During a phone call today the microphone on my HTC HD2 stopped working - I can hear conversations fine but callers cannot hear me anymore - or only very faint. It works fine if I use a Bluetooth headset. By now I tried soft resets as well as also a hardware reset back to factory defaults with no success...I don't have a functional microphone on the unit itself. Anyone experienced this? Any ideas? Emailed HTC support with no response yet...
Thanks. TC

Try testing it with the voice recoder program, just to confirm its definately the mic..
Same thing - it does not record anything. What a a bummer...TC
speakers falling apart, mic's falling apart....
Seems alot of problems with this phone
Yeah, it is a great phone and I love the screen and resolution and responsiveness. But being able to make a phone call is still kind of important on a phone...
Now I get to ship this thing around the globe and hope to get something which last more then 10 days the next go around :-(
Hi i am also facing same problem from this morning any solution...i just bought it one week back...dont know what to do...

If you are in the USA there is usually a 14 day period (30 days in California). I highly suggest you run down to a tmobile store and have it replaced.
Tried rebooting (or even hard resetting) your device? Maybe its a driver or radio problem...
i heared installing fring or skype gives problem like this...is there any fix for that..

I used to have this problem with my Hermes when I installed WOW HD settings... try a hard reset and/or Task 29 and then use the same stock ROM or a cooked one... (do a backup first)
Did someone solve this problem and how?I`ve sent my phone 3 times for guaratntee repair and nothing.
I`m wondering if only people in this post had this problem?!?
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone found a solution for this problem? My problems started yesterday, the person on the other side can't hear me, while i'm still able to hear them. It started outta the blue, it was fine and just stopped working, without any changes at all.
I have tried 4 different radios and 3 different roms and still the same. Also tried using voice recorder with every change made and nothing happened.
i Bought the phone while on a trip and do not have any warranty or proof of purchase.
Getting desperate!
EDITED:
Hey Everyone,
I think i have just found a solution (kinda).
As is said i was getting desperate, so i got a toothpick and stuck into the microphone hole and voila, it worked!!!! well i don't know if i might have damaged anything or this probably won't do any good for the phone or the microphone but it worked for me. please try at your own risk.
Thanks alot, bro, it helped me!

Speaker on the HD

Hi,
I have a problem with my HD. When I call someone people complain they can't hear me very well. I didn't had this problem with my old Touch Dual.
Can anyone help me to find a solution for this small but annoying problem.

Hi Manuel,
it sounds like a problem with your built-in mircophone so it could be a hardware related problem. Have you tried answering calls through a headset with microphone? Have you tried upgrading the firmware on your PDA, this may eradicate the problem.
Best Regards.

Yes mate that's precisely what I meant. The official HTC ROM upgrade you had performed was released in July last year. You could try unlocking your phone (via Hard-SPL or USPL) and then flashing to a custom ROM (6.1/6.5.x) as this will allow you to unleash the true potential of your HD. If you were to try this, I'm hoping one of the cookers ROMs may contain a fix in relation to your problem?
For more information on the latest builds, click here.
For information on unlocking your phone and flashing to a custom ROM, click here.
Note: under the assumption that it may also be a hardware issue, possibly with the microphone, have you considered maybe sending your phone for repair if it's under warranty? (if it is and you decide to return the phone, then avoid unlocking and flashing the phone before you send it back as it will not honour the warranty, and HTC will charge you).
I have not yet being able to locate a Registry fix for this but i think there may be one to adjust the sensitivity of the microphone... i shall keep looking for you.
Regards.

Thank you very much for keep looking for a fix. In fact, my phone is still under warranty and therefore I didn't want to install a new ROM because I'm afraid to loose the warranty. I was trying to avoid sending it to HTC because... this phone is almost a part of me can't imagine myself without it and its contacts, e-mails, web, etc... For work and personal use.

I had SRS WOW but I also have it on my second HD2. Worked fine for me.
Don't have nanogoove
But after a hard reset I should not matter at all
Really don't know whats going on, very strange
To be honest, if you have hard reset the device (as opposed to soft reset) and you have this problem immediately after the hard reset but BEFORE you start to load any applications on then you have to start thinking that you may have a faulty device.
If things are as I describe above you should be thinking about obtaining an exchange under warranty.
