S-Memo's Best Alternative for CM9 based ROMS - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hello everyone, I've seen a lot of CM9 or NON-SMSNG based roms users asking about S-Memo all over. But just to make it short, I think Catch Sketch is the best Alternative that I found for S-Memo and works exactly as same. ( You have to install Catch app first, then the Catch Samsung Add-on all free from the market ).
Replace the S-Planner simply with the ICS Calendar, use Writepad ( Paid app ) as a replacement for the S-Pen writing keyboard, and there you go ! It just feels like running the stock samsung apps. And if you want a perfect note taker on the go is Handwriting ( Free ).
Simply just use :
1 - Catch & Catch Sketch
2- ICS Calendar
3 - Writepad
4 - Handwriting
Cheers

Good job...

I use Jotter for the SMemo replacement. Works very well!

Jotter is great! But I thought that a free app would be more on the go for others, and for me lol ! Catch Sketching is awesome! exactly like S-Memos!

I thought the handwriting recognition of Writepad was good, definitely better than the Samsung one, but then I tried 7 notes. I don't use the notepad app, but the mazec handwriting input method has much better handwriting recognition in my opinion,
I have pretty poor writing and I'm amazed at how well it gets the correct words first me.

Any better suggestion would be welcome! Just trying to help the people around that want the best Alternative! I think when reaching the best collection, no one is gonna get worried about Samsungs Stock ROM !

Try Autodesk SketchBook, many different brushes, pens, pencils, fineliners ...
its more like a drawing app rather than a "taking notes" app though

Wait for sometime and we will soon have odMemo which is being built by xplodwild and amazing devs

My favorite is BugMe! stickies Pro. It has alarm and reminder support too along with notes taking feature.

Thumbs Keyboard App - Good keyboard for the Tab

I found this is the best keyboard out in the market right now.... It works like a champ on the Tab 10.1. It makes typing a lot more natural and gives you a natural hold without moving your hands all over the place.
I saw this keyboard in the Xoom thread and decided to try it on the Tab.
I wanted to share with you guys...
Here is the market link.

and a quick video to check out.

Yesvi agree, I've been using it since my original Galaxy tab 7". Its s must have for any tablet.
SGT 10.1 uplink initiative
I agree... this is my first tablet and it was a great first purchase.
I prefer hacker's keyboard code.google.com/p/hackerskeyboard/
Not thumb based but free and proper keyboard

WOW! That is awesome! Installing.
Thumb keyboard is good, but try Swiftkey Tablet X as well. Neither are as good with autocompletes and learning than Smart Keyboard Pro, but if you like to split style, Swiftkey is better IMO.
Lots of comments about why this app needs internet access, I agree but still would like to buy this app.

Best tablet keyboard I've tried. Really comfortable layout and lots of customization available.
Though I prefer Hackers Keyboard for apps like Connect Bot.

Alternative Keyboards To Stock Samsung

Hi guys,
So if you've used the Stock Samsung Keyboard, I'm guessing you have worked out it's even worse than the iOS keyboard, actually no it's not that bad, but still. It's missing key features and for some reason on each reboot of the phone it seems to forget words I've told it to remember. Coming from a One X, this keyboard is extremely hard to adopt, as the Sense keyboard is absolutely beautiful.
Does anyone know any good, free, alternative keyboards that I could use, maybe even a Sense keyboard? To date I have used the following keyboards, and hate them!:
AOSP Gingerbread
AOSP Ice Cream Sandwich
GO Keyboard (HATED THIS!!)
I can't think of any alternative, however if you guys take the time to make some suggestions I would really really appreciate it! I don't mind installing applications that aren't in the Play Store, I just reeaaaaaly want something better than this!
Thanks guys, you da bomb
I use Ice Cream Sandwich Keyboard by johntanmi
I used to use Smart Keyboard PRO when I was on my GS2 with Gingerbread.
I actually found the Sense keyboard very hard to use and have always been a fan of the iOS keyboard. I really wish there was a ripoff for it for Android that came close. I can use an iOS keyboard on a 3.5" screen as well as I use the ICS keyboard on my 4.8" GS3 screen.
I highly recommend SwiftKey X. It's excellent.
There is a free version of SwiftKeyX, though I would honestly suggest buying it, and eventually Swiftkey3 when it comes out of beta. I don't have an S3 (yet), so I don't know the compatibility it'll have with the phone, but unless you're looking for something similar to Swype, Swiftkey is the way to go.

Or even better, the SwiftKey 3 beta.
Was using ics keyboard donation version for a while but siwftkey keyboard blows it out of the water.
《tapatalked from galaxy s3》
I'm also a +1 for Swiftkey 3 beta (using it now on my Galaxy Nexus)
here's the link (download at bottom of the page):
http://www.swiftkey.net/swiftkey-3-beta-smart-space-ui-themes
I've used SwiftkeyX before (and personally wasnt a huge fan), but I find the changes in Swiftkey 3 have been amazing so far. Especially the new themes, Swiftkey 3 makes the whole thing look much more professional.
Tinker around with the Swiftkey3 settings (I like setting the spacebar action to complete the current word)
I only have a few issues (which im sure they'll work out in the future) - such as their voice input (its not like ICS keyboard where it will dynamically populate your words as you speak , but instead will LIST out options of what it thinks you said)
anyways - Swiftkey3 ! DO IT
I have tried over 10 different keyboards and I keep coming back to Swiftkey. The auto-correction and prediction algorithm is second-to-none. It also handles up to 3 languages simultaneously, so it makes it simple to type in multiple languages (in my case, English and Portuguese). The beta also looks very promising, so it will keep getting better.
Thanks for the replies guys! I'm going to try SwiftKey X and SwiftKey 3, means a lot to me the replies I have had. Support on this seems to be buzzing a hella lot more than over on the One X forums
+ 1000 with SwiftKey... it's just the best! You won't be disappointed of wasting some bucks on it!

What i really love about Swiftkey X is that this keyboard learns my "typing habits" from my SMS, gmail, facebook or twitter. The text prediction become almost perfect.
On the GS3 (coming from a HTC Desire), i tried the samsung keyboard, and installed Swiftkey again after 5 minutes of hating this stock keyboard.
Yeah, I must recommend SwiftKey also, the beta is amazing, I type almost as fast as I do on my desktop... Sometimes it feels impossible to mistype lol. It reads my mind :s

I've tried just about everything but I keep coming back to FlexT9. I wish I didn't as it's uglier than everything else IMO, but in terms of functionality and usability I can't find anything that beats it.
You might try out Thumb Keyboard. I wrote this especially for devices with large screens. Besides a standard layout it has split layouts for landscape and portrait. Although I'm pretty objective when it comes to keyboards, I still find myself typing the most fast on this one.
+ for the SwiftKey. Really really nice, both in visual terms and functionality.
swiftkey X (first app i bought ^^) very nice and useful keyboard
Better keyboard 8. On the S2 gingerbread keyboard.

S-Pen Apps are missing.

Hello. Today I flashed a rom, and there are no S-Pen applications. Is there a possibility to install them afterwards?
You have posted in the wrong forum.
But to answer your question: no I'm sorry. The s pen apps from samsung need samsungs touchwiz to work. You have to find alternatives. I miss them too :/ but with that said some of the alternatives are quite ok.
Next time search before posting.

It really depends on what ROM you flashed. S-Pen apps are not supported with cm9 or any cm based rom. You can search about it.

It may be semantics, but cm9 does not make the s-pen useless. Sure you can't run Samsung's s-pen applications, but there are applications that seem to use at least some of the s-pen features. I recently downloaded "Papyrus". You can write easily with the pen and it knows the difference between the pen and your finger. (You can write with the pen and erase with your finger). I found this quite effective. The pen button is functional as well. I was so impressed I assigned Papyrus to my "Home, Back" key combination. (I haven't used s-note long enough to know where Papyrus falls short however).

S-pen apps, please re-read my statement. I'm on cm9 nightlies right now and I have tried that. The pen was not taken for granted and I have been using it. Thus, you are stating what I've stated, just made it brief.
What S-Pen apps are there that are not done better with 3rd party apps. I am using Clean Note 3 at the moment but have remaoved all Samsung apps including S-Note. Papyrus is just better than S-Note. In fact I can't remember when I last used the S-Pen as I have terrible hand writing and can't draw so it is wasted on me.
No it cant be. I'd try that also when im on Paranoid android rom.
First. I backup s memo when im on stock ICS.
And try to restore when im on paranoid android.
It says "Application not installed" And it stay in it.
I recommend to use MIUI beta 6 or Criskelo v7 rom.
It has a S memo and S note
I only need the calender. is there a good alternative?
No, and frankly you should have read up better before flashing - it is pretty common knowledge that Samsung exclusive apps aren't going to work on a non-Samsung OS. It is like having Internet Explorer on Linux!

SwiftKey + Flow + S-Pen = AWESOME!!!

So, I don't know if anyone else has yet tried the SwiftKey Flow public beta yet, but when paired up with the S-Pen, it's freaking amazing!! "Flow through space" is particularly useful for the S-Pen as well. That's where you don't have to lift from the screen between each word; you just slide down to the spacebar, and carry on with the next word.
Has anyone else tried?
P.S. OK, so we all know that this is still a product in Beta, so it's not finished yet; don't judge it as such. Also, for any of you commenting things like "Flow sucks compared to _______" or whatever, that's fine. However, try to be a little more specific about WHY it sucks etc. The whole idea of a Beta test is to receive feedback from users in order to iron out issues and fix things so that they work properly/better etc. If you're not being specific, you're not helping.
I think the flow still has lots of improvements required. Swype is definitely better there.

Not that I disagree, but then again, that's why it's still a beta. Now is the time to give SwiftKey your personal feedback! If you don't tell them what improvements you think should be made, then they'll never get done...

I like Swiftkey but Swiftkey flow sucks big time. Swype works way better and recognizes a lot of words correctly. I really hope Swiftkey fixes this. I think the Google 4.2 keyboard which I have on my nexus 7 kills them all including Swype the flow works so well on 4.2 keyboard.

For one thing it works in all applications. For another it's more accurate. For a third thing it's much easier to correct a wrong word with it. With flow you have to press backspace to correct the word. Having said that, normal swift key (not flow) is still the best keyboard.
Well Swype Beta 1.3.5 is 'definitely' still better than SK Flow. I don't give a damn about some themes or else, I'm solely talking about word input, and that's what matters to a keyboard!
SK Flow can't save a custom word. SK Flow can't type 'it's', and some more words as reported in their VIP forum. And now I am seeing that it doesn't work in some apps. Well, can't live a minute without Swype. And I had high expectations with Flow. I'm not disappointed but I'm obviously back to Swype, until the bugs are fixed. But one thing for sure, with the bugs fixed, and as SK is known for their awesome prediction, well, it'll be time for me to beat myself with my Keyboard typing rate.
Sent from my GT-N7100
To be honest, vs. the stock note 2 keyboard, Swiftkey flow is garbage.
No clipboard, only 3 predictions, no photo to text mode, no handwriting recognition and "flow"seems to miss a lot of words -I'm constantly correcting it.
If swiftkey believes that adding swyping is the only thing they need to do to stay competitive, they are wrong. Even Touchpal offers more and it's free.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
I quite Like flow., I've installed the tablet version but miss a row of number keys on the stock samsung keyboard. Predictions seem good and swiping is accurate.
I'll give it go for 24hrs before judging it
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda premium
I can't get flow to work with either Boat browser or Google search. Other than that, it's pretty damn awesome.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Flow still needs to improve on their word detection. When I try to "flow" the word "three", it keeps giving me "the". Swype is way more advanced in that aspect, not to mention how Swype handles punctuation and capital letters.
But knowing Swiftkey, they will fix it and all they need is more time.
I have tried this on my note. 10.1 but flow isn't working on landscape. Can you confirm if it is working on the note 2?

just installed the beta.. and IT IS SO AWESOME!!!
Awesome, but a huge battery drain though....they need to get that worked out.
I like all of them for different reasons, too bad one of them doesn't have ALL the features:
- swype great esp when you don't look at your message until after, when you can go back to wrong words, highlight them, and just choose from the available words in the correction bar; new beta really good, adds one-key language switch for those of us using 2 or more langs frequently
- JB 4.2 native keyboard awesome except doesn't have the above option, it only corrects the last word
- new Samsung kybd great as well, I really like the numbers row above the qwerty, plus personal dictionary that pops up long strings like email addresses
- haven't tried swiftkey yet

Galaxy Note II AOSP roms and S-pen functionality

I'm sure some people have figured this out and there might even be a post about it, but I just wanted discuss what I've done to get some S-pen functionality back and to hear about what you've done. I just flashed ParanoidAndroid 3.1 and it's absolutely awesome. I didn't think I'd like not having the Samsung apps but I'm easily getting over that. I'm an avid pen user so naturally I'm doing everything I can to continue using. (Yeah it's like a drug to me.)
So, here's what I have going on:
I use GMD Spen control (found on the market for $$) to retain some gestures and add a few of my own. Unfortunately the frequently used screenshot tap is Samsung only so I'm at a loss there. It works excellent tho.
I use Catch Sketch to replace S-note. So far this app works great. The pen selector seems has a bug on the last pen and looks a lil goofy but it's basically the same as S-note. It seems to lack the color copy feature but it might show up when your coloring on a photo or something.
I use Swype that I downloaded from their actual website to retain the write to text feature.
So that's what I'm working with. If anyone has suggestions or things you've found work better please let me know!

The only thing missing for me is the ability to take snap shots of certain parts of the screen. With the Samsung stock rom I like to be able to circle parts of the screen and cut them out. I have not found any AOSP alternative to this yet. So for now I just take a full screen shot and then crop out the bits I need. Only an extra step but hey ho.
Yeah I completely forgot about that feature. Hopefully someone will be able to make similar applications soon. But they'll probably end up replaced and obsolete soon anyways lol

Hey guys I have an question to you.
Does it happen to you when you write on the screen with the S-Pen and you put it away, that for one to two seconds your screen doesn't react to fingerinput? No matter what app I use this happens but not in Samsung roms.
I don't generally use the s-pen, except to show off the bigger Note's flagship features to awestruck noobs. I moved to 4.2.2 but came back to a Sammy firmware based ROM yesterday, due to some issues. I used to play with the S-pen a lot when I bought the phone. There's one great s-pen app that I like, though - Scribble Racer.

Yep. S-Note isn't the best for anything really. I was a fan of Lecture Notes for quite a time, now I'm using Papyrus which isn't quite as customisable but makes up by being lighter and faster. It's quite adequate for my humble needs.

Awesome Note is great, and doesn't work as seamlessly on AOSP as it does with TW, but the size is too tiny for my liking anyways, on Note II since it's optimized for Note 8.
