yesterday i bought the motorola defy +, first thing i noticed is Wi-Fi problems when creating a motoblur account. i read that it's an incompatibility with some new routers or something, this morning went outside to find unsecure Wi-Fis and create that motoblur account, created it on the 3rd wifi i found and was finally able to access my phone.
but again when i came home, it showed i was connected but it couldn't actually use the internet (Market, Youtube, Browser).
it's a thing i'm concerned about but i think is fixable at the store or fixable when putting a new android version.
i want to upgrade my Defy+ to Android 4
questions:
1)how dangerous is this process?
2)i've read that if you change it from stock ROM, Motoblur bans your account, if so what are the consequences of it.
3) what is Motoblur good for besides the widgets and the social network updates on your home screen?
4)if motoblur doesn't ban the account when upgrading say to android 4. will it be problematic in that version and can i get rid of it?
5)from the store, i got the Defy+ on android 2.3.6, i've read somewhere that the android version you get when you buy it is 2.3.4, was the phone rooted or something? the phone is also set for my countries languages (English, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic) (btw, i'm still very confused about rooting and what it is)
6)i don't wanna ruin the warranty when i upgrade to android 4. I've read that you can just set to the original 2.3.4 and everything will be fine, thing is for me it's 2.3.6 and with different languages than some other places. will i still be fine?
7)if i upgrade to android 4, will i be able to download paid apps for free?
if so, is there anything i need to do extra? are there consequences?
if not, how do i do so? and again, what are the consequences?
8) what is cyanogenmod(CM x (x being a number))
9) is there anything else necessary for a person like me to know?
if i missed some detail please let me know, i tend to miss details or words for some reason.
Thanks a Head a Lot for the time and and answers!

Cm (cyanogenmod) is an after market customer support rom. It's build by developers in there spare time. It replaces your current rom. No blur, extra functions, fixes for bugs by Motorola...
There is no upgrade to ics (at least not by Motorola). Cm9 (ics) us not yet that stable.
If you want to improve your telephone experience you can look into cm7 (gb, they skipped 8 -> honeycomb) or miui(other look). They don't have blur. There are other apps in the market that do the same. And backup of your contacts is done best with Google.

1) Before you do anything read up on flashing sbfs. These are how motorola updates the phone. If you ever mess up or get stuck you can always flash an sbf and you'll be like new. So there is no real danger.
2)3)4) Most people hate motoblur, so I wouldn't worry about it, if you flash cm there will be no trace of it.
5)6) Sounds like your'e in Israel, they obviously installed their own version of the software to support their languages. Try searching for Israeli sbf.
7) If you mean apps you paid for yes you can redownload them.
9) look through the forums for tutorial and read everything first.
Enjoy youre phone.
Sent from my MB526 using XDA
It is not dangerous, the only dangerous part is flashing sbfs, because if u flash a newer version you can't be able to flash your previous sbf (downgrade). Just flash only the same sbf you have now. Your phone is not rooted, you have to root it. When you root it you will be able to use apps that require root, and to install a custom recovery (u need it to install custom roms). Obviously if it's a paid app you have to pay for it, even on ics. CM7 (gingerbread) is stable, and CM9 (ics) is not stable yet, it has some bugs, but it works really well. The only consequence is flashing a newer bootloader version, defy is hard to brick.
I've been reading a few threads here on XDA... still completely confused about everything...
I'm going to post the process i assume i need to do to get my phone to a nicer version.
and a question before that: will upgrading to a new version fix my Wi-FI problem?
1) rooting:
Get SuperOneClickRoot (can't download it from here: ht tp:// short fuse.org/?p=80 ) (will superoneclick 2.3.3 do the job?)
Get and Install Motorola Drivers [32bits] [64bits]
Reboot your PC
Turn USB Debugging ON (Settings -> Applications -> Development on your Defy)
Connect your Defy to the PC
Wait for the PC to install any missing Drivers
Click on Root
Let it work, then it will ask if you want to install BusyBox, hit YES
After it finished it will ask to make a test, click cancel and just Reboot your Defy
Done, Defy rooted
2) Flashing:
Get the SBF you want to flash
(cyanogenmod 7 or 9 or ICS (i don't mind some of the bugs since i don't use the apps related to them)
Get and Install RSD Lite v4.9 (do i install on PC or phone)
Open RSD Lite: Click on [ … ] Button and select your .SBF (Remember to rename to a short name and put it on root of your PC) and click Open.
Boot your phone into Bootloader Mode (check last section if you don’t know how to do it).
Now connect your Defy to your PC
The START button on RSD Lite should be available now, click and wait.
and to comeback to stock ROM i have no idea how to. something to do with CG versions and i have no idea what it means, do i have to find an ICS/cyanogenmod with the same CG?
again thank you for your replies and future replies!
WIUI
I Tried CM9 and WIUI i Think WIUI is much more stable and offer better perfomance, with a easier UI
On witch android version are you now? (In settings>about). Different defy+ sbf's need different methods. Read the defy beginners guide for info on sbf's etc...

i have android 2.3.6. i have read that guide and it confused me even more.... about CG. which 1 do i need? (if it makes a difference i have languages that appear most in my country; israel) again, many thanks!
Cyanogenmod is not a sbf. First you have to flash your sbf, and then root your phone. The sbf will be your stock rom, and cm your custom rom (it comes in a .zip flashable with recovery).
You're with 2.3.6.. Most probably CG version 7(Bootloader 7). Don't worry you're already on ' what I should say' Top of the tower right now. There's no jumping back.
For more info about rooting, flashing and SBF etc. go through the guides in the forum..

wow i just can't comprehend this process...
if i manage to do this process and some time later i might need the warranty, is there a way to unroot uneverything i've done in my phone assuming i can't get my hands on the sbf that i have on my phone? (or can i somehow save the 1 on my phone)
3 more unrelated questions:
1)i have some sort of scratch or erased part on my Defy+ (which is supposed to withstand almost all). it's on the left side of the screen and if u blow hot air on it (on the whole screen) then you can see borders of the screen and that scratched part, if u move ur finger from the right to the left u feel a bit of roughness on the bordered area.
this is weird, because i haven't even put my phone on the table on the screen, always on it's back. and i'm very paranoid about my phone even though it's supposed to withstand a lot. i have only once lost my phone out of sight through the 3 days i have it, i gave it to a tech guy in the store i bought it in for 5 minutes.
now, how the **** can something like that happen? isn't that gorilla glass? (it's not an even line/border if it matters) and i know it's not dirt because I've rubbed, I've sprayed some LCD cleaner spray, some Window Cleaner, Some alcohol (95%).
2) i heard of 2 ways to download paid apps for free, 4shared.com appplanet (or something) now the questions are: will i get banned on motoblur or android or something like that? will i be still able to use it (4shared/applanet) once i flash my Defy+?
what are the consequences of this?
3)my phone constantly opens apps for no reason! every 5 minutes i have to go into app killer or task killer (forgot the name) to kill all the running apps. if i don't do it every few minutes i will come to find a butt load of apps!!! is this a bug? will this be fixed if i flash my Defy+?
again, many thanks ahead.

1. To unroot it you'll need your stock SBF.Look for it, most probably you'll find in the SBF's thread.
2. Gorilla glass is scratch resistant not scratch proof so some minor scratches may appear, better find a good screen-guard.
3.When a developer ask users to pay for the apps, it is because he would've worked real hard for that and the app is worth paying for.I feel its not only illegal bt unethical as well to run pirated apps.
Still if you run any pirated apps, Google or Android or anything else won't block anything.
At most the app may stop wrking if it fails to verify the license.
4.There's a lot of stuff running in the background that invoke the apps you see running.
If you feel some of those are useless and killing those won't affect system working, use Auto-kill from your task manager..

about that rough area in the phone.
that screen is supposed to survive keys but can't survive my hand, pocket and shirt (only things the screen came in touch with)?(empty pocket)
and this morning i wake up after last night seeing the rough area one more time before bed. and see a New Rough area, it's a very thin line in the middle right of the screen. (i blew hot air to look at the rough area and saw this) and at night, NOBODY touched it! it's like the screen coating (not sure if it is coating, dunno what it is.) is degrading.
i will buy a screen guard but the thing is that untill then i'm afraid the screen won't be fully intact anymore. (not that it is now...)

The environment around you..Is it quite dusty or does the phone gets in contact with sand particles??
Coz it can survive keys but not sand..

i live in the city and i don't recall living in a very dusty house or going to one.
and isn't it dust resistant as well as waterproof?
EDIT:
back on topic of upgrading: i have some apps i cannot uninstall (they came with the phone) will i be able to uninstall them if i install WIUI?

Sand particles may cause scratches on the glass..however if you feel its serious, get it to the service center..
Some apps are the part of the ROM. If you flash another ROM, those apps won't be present unless they're included in the one you flash.

i have a question about DLNA.
i opened up DLNA while on wi-fi saw 2 computers (mine and bros)
i tried connecting to mine (every 1 of the 3 options failed) (share media is enabled)
so i googled how to my computer accesible to DLNA and followed a guide.
(basically enable media sharing...) once i've done that, i checked my Defy+ and my computer was gone from the list, i restored the setting so i will be able to see it again, but i can't! and i can't find anything anywhere about how to make it work.
is there a normal guide for this? has anyone encountered this issue?

Can't help you much with that.DLNA is stock rom feat and I've been using custom roms for quite a long now..
Though I'd suggest to clear app data from settings.

if i do a nandroid backup, will i be able to use that back up (i have no idea what nandroid back up does so...) to unroot, and return to original SBF? original Flash original everything? and have no warranty issues?
is this the process i need to go through to get WIUI?
Flashing:
1) Put the ROM i want in the SC card (zipped or unzipped?)
2)download and install motorola drivers
3) download and install RSDLite (4.9 if i'm not mistaken?)
4)open RSDLite
5)Enter Bootloader Mode on you phone (Power+VolUp)
6)Connect phone to you PC (USB)
7)Open RSD - Lite
8) Flash new SBF.
(where and when and how do i backup?)
rooting:
1.Download SuperOneClick (2.1.1-shortfuse)
2.Turn On usb debugging mode in your phone.Don't put phone USB mass storage mode.
3.Connect your phone to your pc.
4.Open SuperOneClick as Administrator.
5.Click ROOT and wait. If it asks whether you wish to install Busybox etc, give yes or ok.
6.Once root is complete you will get a pop up asking whether you wish to donate. Make a choice.
7.At last you will find a line on the right side pane saying to reboot. Reboot your phone.
Installing the rom:
1. Download 2ndinit 1.4.2
2. install 2ndinit (Important!:following the instructions)
3. Boot into bootmenu by pressing volume down when device flashes a blue led at bootup. Set default boot mode to 2nd init.
4. Select Recovery/Stable Recovery. Choose "Wipe Data/Cache" option. Let finish.
5. Choose Install zip from SD Card, select WajkIUI_multilang .zip and let it finish.
6. select "Wipe Cache" then go to Advanced and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache". Reboot Now!
7. After boot, set your prefered language in Settings menu
7. Done! Recommend: use Battery Calibration for maximum battery
questions:
1) where does the nandroid backup come in mind?
2) what about that CG stuff? and how do i know my CG and the WIUI CG and how do i know that if i need to unroot it's unrootable./return to stock SBF.
3) i've read somewhere that you need to change some file name to a very short one otherwise it will be brick, also it needs to be in a certain location on the pc/phone?
what file is that?
4) where does the clockwork Manager come in play?
unrelated:
Should i overclock my CPU? (i play games a lot, not sure if every game i plan on downloading will be able to run fluidly with 1 GHZ...)

Nandroid backup is done when you're flashing a New Custom ROM to your phone through Custom Recovery(Clockwork Mod is A custom Recovery).
The above steps are for flashing A New SBF..
What are SBF's? You'll find the answer here.

This is how you flash a Custom ROM, which is a flashable *.zip file
Only thing to add is when you enter stable Recovery(CWM), choose Backup/Restore> Full Backup before step 5.
This is your Nandroid backup
Now get the difference between two methods.
Code:
1.)Flashing A SBF
Flashing A SBF is done through RSDLite using your PC. This is where the CG versions are important. The file is with extension *.sbf placed on your pc at any location.
Code:
2.)Flashing A Custom ROM
Flashing A Custom ROM is done through your Recovery on the device itself. The ROM is a flashable zip placed on you SDcard.Custom ROM's DO NOT ALTER the CG version.
3) i've read somewhere that you need to change some file name to a very short one otherwise it will be brick, also it needs to be in a certain location on the pc/phone?

Its the SBF file when flashing through RSDLite.
Its ClockworkMod And it is your Custom/Stable Recovery.
I don't see a need to do so,unless you feel some lags using your phone. 1Ghz is quite high for a device, trust me.

The only way to unroot it is to flash you stock SBF through RSDLite. Thats the only way. nothing else.
PS: you should read the faq threads etc. Most of the stuff is already answered in detail.

Hello, im SO desperate...
I rooted my Droid X a while ago, and just decided to flash a custom ROM yesterday.
I tried ApeX; worked great. Buy it reminded me of my rooted CM'd G1, so i wanted something else. I decided to try a bunch of ROMs so i could make an educated desition.
Needless to say Bootstrapper worked great.
I tried Fission, then, DarkSlide; GummyJar, Liberty 1.5 & finally, Tranquility.
I must say, the latter one is a bit too buggy for me.. For one thing, lock screen.. doesnt shoe the lock button, so you kinda just have to trust it'll unlock when you swipe your finger, and in most cases, it does... But it aint what i was looking for.
Ive decided i liked Liberty, for its easy to use GUI for customization.
Heres where the problem starts...
My device will boot into Tranquility just fine, but if i try to run recovery thru bootstrapper... uh-uh. Nothing happens, I guet stuck in the Tranquility boot screen (tranquility replaced the default M screen, as well as the animation boot, just like liberty)....
I tried using clockworkmod rom manager and i got the EXACT same results.
I tried formatting my sd card; nuttin... i read somewhere, someone said that "charging the battery to a full 100% worked for him"... it doesnt make any sense, but ive tried it.
I dont know what to do... i mean, my phone works fine, but i dont wanna get stuck with TRANQUILITY!
ive also tried unrooting and rerooting... uninstalling and reinstalling both bootstrapper and clockwork...
If i shut down and boot with the home+power pressed buttons, the phone WILL enter its recovery mode, ive already tried a "factory reset", and all i get is... THE SAME THING! Itll reset my Tranquility as if it were the first time i flashed it.
How can i flash another rom?
I read something about an SPL, but ive no idea what that is nor what to do with it.
Id appreciate your help...
Paul Suquet
First of all it is an SBF, and will get to that in a second, first try booting while holding just the volume down button with the power button. If that does not work, you may want to SBF. This is a process that erases all the data and system files and takes you back to how the phone was when it came out of the box, or 100% stock. After doing this you could root again and then install liberty. If you want a guide on how to SBF, then just Google it. There are many guides available
There is a thread here called getting into clockwork mod the hard way. You could try it before doing an sbf.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
try turning ur phone off, plug it into ur charger let it do the charging animation and then turn it on, it should boot into recovery
Ok people, [SOLVED]
Good news people, i successfully recovered via Verizon's SPL.
Allow me to recap; i own a Mexican Droid X, known as Motoroi X. I rooted via one click root, and installed Fission ROM. Then i wanted to try ApeX, after that, i tried GummyJar, then Liberty, then DarkSlide, and finally Tranquility. I don't know if i did something wrong, of if this is a problem Tranquility has, but after Tranquility, bootstrapper woudn't boot to recovery... so, i wasnt able to switch roms. Tranquility booted just fine, but if i tried to boot to recovery (be it via Bootstrapper, or via ClockworkROM), i got stuck in the "tranquiliy boot screen" (not even making it into boot animation), so , i had to take the battery off, and boot regularly... Trouble is, I didnt lile Tranquilty (all my respect for all dva's but, Liberty 1.5 was my choice, and it is at the moment). I liked the easy customization it has. One of my friends decided on ApeX (he liked the idea of having a bit of Blur).
SO, what troubled me was:
(1) My phone aint from verizon. I live in Mexico City, and my carrier is called IUSACELL... my phone actually had a totally different version on it when i first got it. Ill give out the version it had from factory, to trigger search results towards this page; hence help the multiple people in mexico city who bought their Droid X device via this carrier... my Sistem Version was:
Version.3.0.15.MB810.Iusacell.en.MX
Ive attached a screenshot of what my "About Phone" looked like from stock.
Cant attach anything, due to being quite new to the forum, sorry about that.
So anyway, I, and one of my best friends (with the same phone and carrier... allow me to say, that in mexico, this phone is not commercially known as a DROID X, its called Motoroi X, buy as you can see by the version MB810, it is the exact same hardware you verizon users know).
Let me say that, my phone was able to keep all my carrier config (that is, PRL, VPNs and such). So, to all other Iusacell Motoroi X users; ROOT YOUR PHONE; AND RUN ANY ROM YOU LIKE!
(2) I heard so much about SPL, but no one could tell me what the heck that was... SO here it is, plain english; its just like doing a firmware update; or, like updating your bios... Let me call it "hardware formatting"... Just a way to get your phone TOTALLY back to stock... Now, this SPL i found, was for Verizons stock, (which had a lot more crap than Iusacell did...), but hell, it saved my @$$. Youll need an Ubuntu Live CD (i use Ubuntu as my daily OS, so... no need to do that), the SPL per se, your phone, and a micro usb cable (no, not a mini USB, we all know motorola did a trick on us and used this micro USB instead of the common mini usb... i suppose they saved some space).
Here are the complete instructions: (remember this will flash your phone, so, be sure to backup at least all the contents of your SD, and; even if there is a slight chance, remember that any of this thing COULD potentially brick your phone, i'm willing to help all i can; anyone out there, but dont hold me responsible, this worked GREAT for me, and it MIGHT not work for you).
Please note that most of these instructions are not authored by myself, i just made a few adjustments to thm and i wanted to make them publicly available to those out there who are in the same ordeal i was:
1: Download the Ubuntu image. It's an .iso file - this means it can be burned onto a cd/dvd. Do so.
2: Once the burn is complete, reboot your computer, set your bios to boot from cd/dvd if you have to.
3: Ubuntu's Menu will appear, select "Try" to boot into the OS without altering your current setup.
4: Download the .sbf_flash utility and the proper .sbf file (note that a file that starts with a period, means to linux, that it is a hidden file. The sbf_flash I got, dont remember where i got it from but it weighs exactly 24KBs. And the .sbf file i found is called "VRZ_MB810=_2.3.34_1FF_01.sbf" weighting 445,393KBs. Dont you dare change the name of these; as Linux doesn't recognise spaces as a character, so, if you changed all the underscores to spaces, Linux' console would not be able to "see" it. If you can't find it, post a reply in this forum, ill see the way of getting it to you.
5: Flash the image onto your phone:
Turn on hard recovery mode; turn phone off; press (and keep pressing): CAMERA + VOLUME DOWN + POWER. Until it comes on. You may have to release all three, and press again power (usually the screen is "blocked").
Now youre in hard recovery mode, and the phone will recognize the computer via USB; so... CONNECT YOUR PHONE VIA USB, duh!
Place the .sbf file to a directory (e.g. Documents)
Place the sbf_flash file into the same directory
Open up a terminal window
Change to the directory that the files are in. [cd] is the command you use; so if in Documents, type [cd Documents].
Ubuntu is caps sensitive, so you need to type the capital "D". If you type "ls" (the equivalent of typing "dir" on Windows Command, or DOS) it lists all the files in the current directory you're in, so type [ls], if you see the files, you're golden.
Type [chmod +x sbf_flash] (ignore brackets) – this command makes sbf_flash an executable. If you've been rooting your phone with ADB Tools you've seen this command before.
Type [sudo ./sbf_flash [name of sbf file, starts with 'VRZ_']] (once again ignore the brackets) – this command runs the sbf_flash file. 'sudo' is the linux-y way of 'running as administrator' in Windows.
It will prompt you for your password - enter it (if your in a Live CD; password is most likely "admin", with no quotes)
Your Ubuntu machine will hard format your phone. Youre probably used to seeing your phone itself perform the installation of a ROM, this is similar. But it aint your phone directly doing it; its Ubuntu... Glorious, faithful ubuntu.
Your phone will reboot, and youll be in a Verizon Stock Rom. You WONT be in the version i described before (but that version was lost since your first Rom...) Iusacell Mexico will work flawlessly... youll still have your telephone line working, and your data plan (if applies). All you have to do now, is run bootstrapper again (this time itll work), your phone is most likely still rooted. If its not, run one click root again; and run your favorite Rom.
Ive tried all roms and decided to keep Liberty 1.5, only downside ive found is; a) camera works, but stock software seems a bit buggy, and b) NO HDMI port. My friend kept ApeX, there IS an HDMI port on ApeX, but as far as I know, youll need to install Stock (Blurry) gallery.
It is a shame HDMI can only be used for picture and video taken from the phone, viewing... I trust sooner or later, there'll be a rom (or a paid app...) able to exploit the HDMI capabilities of the Droid X.

Great to hear its working
when i got my moto defy for xmas last year, i had my older brother root it for me. i really had no idea how to safely use root, but i liked being able to overclock and all the other features. the phone was a little buggy just because it was on 2.1 and no updates yet. once an update came out, i installed it and got a great performance increase. later, i realized that it was not working right. whenever i hold down an on-screen button, the touch sensitivity "timed out" after only about 1.5 seconds, unless i kept my finger moving around on the screen. and every few times i reboot the phone, this glitch goes away until i reboot again and then it is back. root was also taken away, and none of the one click roots work. also, when the 2.2 update came out, i got the error message when rebooting after installing the update and it did not work. i tried wiping the phone several times, no luck. i am now interested in fashing a custom rom and rerooting. would this fix it? there must be a special way to do it since my phone is so messed up. i would like 2.2 or 2.3, and 720p vid would be cool too. the version i have now is 2.1.1, so can anybody suggest a rom that is stable and will work ok?. one more question, when i flash a rom, will it leave my apps and settings alone or do i have to start over?
Have you tried using SuperOneClick to root the phone? (You'll need to install the Motorola drivers for it to work.)
In most cases, you will lose your apps and settings when you flash a new ROM. But, if you figure out a way to root it, you can back everything up in Titanium Backup first, and restore it afterward.
If you just want to start from scratch, try wiping everything in the stock recovery. To get into the stock recovery, power off the phone, hold in the volume- button then also press and hold the power button. After a few seconds you should see a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle, and a little green android guy below that. Then press the volume+ and volume- buttons at the same time, and a menu should appear. Use the volume buttons to navigate the menu, and the power button to select an option. Select "wipe data/factory reset" and also "wipe cache partition".
If that doesn't work, I'd recommend flashing a new Froyo sbf using RSD Lite. Here's a quick tutorial:
1) Install the Motorola drivers and RSD Lite on your computer. See this guide for installing Moto drivers and RSD Lite:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853674
2) Download the sbf file that you want to flash, and save it to your PC. Many sbf files can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537 WARNING: If you flash a full stock SBF file, in most cases you will lose the ability to downgrade to earlier firmware versions. NEVER flash a full stock SBF file with a higher Android version than 2.2 (Froyo). Any stock firmware with Android version 2.3 or higher is made for the DEFY+, which has different camera hardware than the DEFY. If you flash the stock DEFY+ firmware, your camera will be broken and you won’t be able to downgrade back to Froyo again.
3) Make sure the phone battery is fully charged. Power off your phone, then hold in the volume+ button and the power button at the same time. After about 5 seconds, release the buttons. The bootloader should display – it will show the version and a battery check. (If that doesn’t work, pull the battery, then put it back in while holding the volume+ and power buttons.)
4) Start RSD Lite on your computer, then connect the phone with a USB cable. In RSD Lite, the Status column should say “Connected…”. Click on that, and some information about your phone should show up under Device Properties. Next, click the “…” button and browse to select the SBF file that you want to install. After opening it, information about the file should show up under File Properties. Then click “Start” and wait for the flashing process to complete. Wait until the phone has fully rebooted and RSD Lite says “Pass” before closing RSD Lite and disconnecting the USB cable. As an extra precaution, I usually power off the phone before disconnecting the cable.
Then you should be able to root, install custom recovery, and flash custom ROMs to your heart's content.
Good luck!
Thanks! Sorry to be a noob, but how do I know if a rom /sbf will work? Doesn't it matter what android version I have now? 2.1.1 is it
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Most custom ROMs for the defy require that you upgrade to Android 2.2 (Froyo) first. I can explain how to do that, if you like. What country are you from, and what cellular service are you using?
Before doing anything to your phone, you should read this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
Take a backup using titanium backup. This takes Care of all app and games. Then flash froyo. Go hd to install a custom rom like cm7. Guides are there for this. Restore all app and games with data from titanium backup
all this stuff is like you are speaking french to me. could somebody link me a sbf that has 720p video capability, 2.2 of some sort, and that is going to work with my current version(2.1.1)? i am still confused if the glitch i described will be fixed, and if it matters that i installed an update from motorola after i rooted. i really hate to be such a noob, but i don't have time to read all the guides and stuff. thanks for all the help, i just need a little more detail as i am very new to all this. I have T-Mobile USA
and one more thing: i just looked at some of the sbf's in the guide you showed me, the only 2.2 US file was from Megaupload, and F***King SOPA shut it down. now we feel the effects of this horrible law.

If your DEFY has a greenish-yellow camera lense (as most do), you won't get 720p video capability no matter which sbf you use. (Unfortunately, it's a hardware limitation.) Most custom ROMs will enable you to take widescreen videos, though.
You don't need to use a T-Mobile USA sbf, by the way; you can use any Froyo (Android 2.2) sbf you want (except for Chinese ones, which will burn out your camera flash). You just have to change the cellular radio baseband afterward, to match the frequencies used by T-Mobile USA. That's easy to do; just use the "DEFY baseband switcher" app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 (Many custom ROMs, like CM7, already include the basebandswitcher app.)
Since you don't want to search through the forums for a guide on how to flash an SBF, here's one I wrote for a friend a while ago:
Flashing SBF firmware with RSD Lite
Follow this guide to flash firmware files (with .sbf filename extension) on the Motorola DEFY. This is useful for “de-bricking” a phone that won’t boot (provided the bootloader still works), or if you want to do a clean install of the Motorola stock firmware. I don’t recommend flashing SBF files unless absolutely necessary, however, since the process is dangerous: there is a slight possibility that your phone could become “hard-bricked” if something goes wrong. (A phone is hard-bricked when you can’t even access the bootloader to flash new firmware.) It is much safer to flash or modify firmware using ClockworkMod custom recovery, which doesn’t mess with the bootloader. (See step 3 for more info.)
Before flashing any new firmware on your phone, I strongly recommend reading this Beginners Guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
WARNINGS:
A corrupted SBF, power failure on a critical part of the formatting, or some weird issues while creating partitions can lead to a “hard-bricked” phone (i.e., a phone that can’t even be restored by flashing new firmware, because you can’t get into the bootloader). It is recommended that you flash your phone from a laptop with a fully charged battery, to reduce the risk of losing power while flashing. Use good cables, and be sure that the PC doesn’t go to sleep during the flashing process.
If you flash a full stock SBF file, in most cases you will lose the ability to downgrade to earlier firmware versions. (You can, however, install DEFY+ firmware without losing downgradeability, using the “fixed SBF” method. See this guide for more information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982 )
The Chinese version of the DEFY has a different kind of LED for the camera flash. Using the camera flash with that firmware can permanently damage the LED.
Before installing any new firmware on your phone, backup your stock firmware, so that you can return your phone to its original state in case you ever need to send it to Motorola for repair. The firmware for the US T-Mobile version of the DEFY was never released as an SBF file, so you won’t be able to restore the phone to its original state unless you have a full system backup of the stock firmware. (See note at step 3 of the guide below.)
1) Install the Motorola drivers and RSD Lite on your computer.
See these guides for installing Moto drivers and RSD Lite:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853674
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897445
2) Flashing new firmware using RSD Lite will erase everything on your phone’s internal memory (but not the SD card), so backup your contacts, settings, and any apps you’ve downloaded. I recommend using Titanium Backup, which is available free on the Android Market.
Note: your phone must be rooted before installing Titanium Backup. You can root the DEFY using SuperOneClick. Rooting the phone voids the warranty, but you can use SuperOneClick to un-root it if needed. See this guide: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...d-samsung-captivate-with-super-one-click-app/
As explained in the guide, you need to unmount the SD card and enable USB debugging before running SuperOneClick. The latest version of SuperOneClick can be downloaded here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
3) Download the sbf file that you want to flash, and save it to your PC. If you are doing a “clean install” of CyanogenMod 7, I recommend using the 3.4.2-179-2 CEE DEBLUR sbf. Links to download it can be found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
It would be a good idea to keep that file on your PC, in case you ever need to de-brick.
4) Optional step: before flashing an SBF file, it is a good idea to wipe data and cache in the stock recovery. (I usually forget to do that, though, and I haven’t had any problems.) To get into the stock recovery, power off the phone, hold in the volume- button then also press and hold the power button. (At least, that is the procedure on Android 2.2. If I remember correctly, on Android 2.1 you had to tap somewhere on the touchscreen to get the menu to display, and the touchscreen was also used to navigate the menu.)
5) Make sure the phone battery is fully charged. Power off your phone, then hold in the volume+ button and the power button at the same time. After about 5 seconds, release the buttons. The bootloader should display – it will show the version and a battery check. (If that doesn’t work, pull the battery, then put it back in while holding the volume+ and power buttons.)
6) Start RSD Lite on your computer, then connect the phone with a USB cable. In RSD Lite, the Status column should say “Connected…”. Click on that, and some information about your phone should show up under Device Properties. Next, click the “…” button and browse to select the SBF file that you want to install. (WARNING: read the above warnings about file versions and downgradeability.) After opening it, information about the file should show up under File Properties. Then click “Start” and wait for the flashing process to complete.
7) Wait until the phone has fully rebooted and RSD Lite says “Pass” before closing RSD Lite and disconnecting the USB cable. As an extra precaution, I usually power off the phone before disconnecting the cable.
8) Root the phone using SuperOneClick. See this guide: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...d-samsung-captivate-with-super-one-click-app/
As explained in the guide, you need to unmount the SD card and enable USB debugging before running SuperOneClick. The latest version of SuperOneClick can be downloaded here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
9) If you're not going to install a custom rom and you used an sbf that is not for T-Mo USA, you'll have to change the baseband frequencies. Install the baseband switcher app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 Open the app and click on the “Americas” tab, and select one of the “US T-Mobile” options. (The “US T-Mobile 3.4.2-107-9” option works well for me.) The phone will have to be rebooted again.
Hi
I am getting ready to update to ICS.
But I am worried it will go wrong, or I wont like the ICS or it may have bugs that i cant deal with.
How would i backup the original OS.
Is there one out there which i can just reinstall the original Motorola Android OS that it came with?
Which is the best ICS to go for? Quarx or Epsylon3
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100
Epsylon3 has the 2 bugs of
-In Epsilon's build microphone isn't recognized by apps
-In Epsilon's build theres a multitouch bug
where as Quarx does not...
What guide should i follow to install?

ok so i installted bootmenu 0.6.1
i hope that was the right one.
Its really confusing, last time i used bootloader was a year or more ago
and it was simple
now its strange
every time i started the phone it went into bootloader..
so i set the default to normal instead of bootloader
now there are these setting
Boot (I guess thats seletct which os u want to boot into)
System -
UnRooting (9 guess thats to unroot ur device....
Uninstall boot menu (does wat it says but i wonder if u uninstall it, would it go bak to the original one?)
Recovery -
Custom Recovery (... what is this?
Stock Recovery (.... this is?
Tools -
ADB Daemon ????
USB Mass Storage ????
where does one back up? and where is install update.zip from SD?
By clicking Custom Recovery I see that i can get to the old style update.zip from sd menu
Stock Recovery = Crash screen (triangle with ! and lil green android)
but how would i select which boot to install it on Normal or 2nd?
Questions go in the Q&A section.
Thread moved
In custom recovery there should be a "backup and restore" option. Use that to make a backup.

Hi,just saw your post.I have a defy.I am writing this based on my experiences with defy. There are a few changes to be made for defy plus, which i have mentioned at the appropriate parts. This guide should be useful for both defy and defy+ owners.I personally use quarx build.Don't know about the epsylon build, but i see people complaining about some bugs..Just my opinion.Anyway if you are going to go with quarx(assuming you have defy),i recommend u stay away from build of 8th march with the hardware acceleration.Frankly itz too buggy for everyday use.Too many force closes and restarts.Stick with the 5th march build.Which is great(nearly as good as a stable rom for both defy and defy +)
Find out which SBF your Motorola originally came with.Sbfs are the files with.sbf extension which is basically your stock(original) firmware.SBF files are only for original firmwares. No cm9 or cm7 files come with .sbf extension.Defy in different regions have different sbfs. You should find your appropriate SBF in Xda forums. If you need that and can't find it reply back.I will help you.Personally your Original Sbf is your starting point. In case you have a warranty claim and you are running in CM9,then flash your defy with the above mentioned sbf with RSD lite.I will go into flashing with rsd lite later.Voila!!Phone is good as new.No hint of ever running Cm9 or warranty voiding stuff.Personally i would ask you to keep this someplace safe. You can sleep peacefully!
Installing CM9 involves
1.Rooting your phone
2.Taking A titanium Backup(optional)
3.Installing 2ndinit
4.Rebooting into Clockwork Recovery
5.Taking a nandroid backup(optional but highly recommended)
6.Flashing CM9 files
7.Restart!
Root your Phone.
Now before proceeding let me remind you this will void your warranty.Of course you can flash your original sbf to revert back. But there is always a small risk(Personally i don't think there is,but i believe everyone should be aware of their options).
Root with superone click root. This is a windows app.Not sure about linux or mac.Search XDA for the latest.i think v2.2 is the latest.
The actual process of rooting.(whatever u do,have at least 70% battery)
Enable USB debugging in your phone. It should be in Settings->Applications->Development and enable “USB Debugging“.Then connect your phone via usb cable to your pc.Select Charging Only option(not the memory card access) in the usb connection mode notification that comes in your phone up when you plug in the usb.Make sure it is not mounted in mass storage mode(memory card access). For that check in My computer if your sd card is visible. And check your connected usb devices in the safely remove button at the right side of windows taskbar. That should cover it.Do not root with sd card mounted(memory card access).
Open the superoneclick.exe file in your pc(You should have downloaded this by now from http://shortfuse.org/ or from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682).if you are not using vista or 7 go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682.You will find information you need if you use mac,xp or linux.I rooted this on a windows 7 pc which was fine.Anyway after opeining the application click on root under the Universal tab.
For any confusion go to http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/root-android-phone-superoneclick-2/.they have screenshots. After rooting which will take like a min or less,(you might be asked to install busybox and to run a test.click yes for both)An app called superuser will be installed. This basically confirms you have superuser access. And the app basically monitors other apps that you have given superuser privileges. There is no way you can go wrong with superoneclick because itz that easy!!
Why Root?
Because Motorola doesn't want us to tinker with the original firmware files.Basically they do not want the additional burden of software troubleshooting in case of a warranty claim if the user messes up his phone.
But as a user it is sad.Basically think like this. You bought a new PC.You are free to install XP,7,vista ,Linux or anything(as long as you pay for it!)right??Well in case of phones you can't.For informed buyers, this is nuts. For me,if i use a device i want to stretch its capability.I don't want to be the idiot that uses a phone just for calling or for some apps.Cyanogen Mod is my place to go for my requirments.
Basically Rooting unlocks the superuser capabilities of the phones firmware.Superuser access means ability to tinker with your rom(Original SBF) which you were previously denied. In this case your original SBF will be modified to give you admin privileges. In CM7(gingerbread version ) and CM9(ICS version) you already have that capability in the firmware.
Anyway you have access to your rom now. With this (if you want!)you can use an app called SetVsel to overclock or undervolting your phone cpu.Be careful when you do that.Read about VSel values before you tinker.that is if you are interested in overclocking or undervolting on stock firmware.Otherwise we move on to titanium backup.
Next,if you want to have all your apps when you jump into CM9,take a Titanium Backup.Titanium Backup is an app in the Market(Play store). It requires root privileges. It keeps a backup of all apps you installed. You can do a lot of stuff with it other than just backup. But backup and restore is the core functionality of the app.Superuser might ask you to give it superuser access.Click yes.Anyway if you have money Go for Titanium Backup Pro.Best App money can buy.Totally worth every cent.Buy it.Run the batch restore option(This option is a little inside the menu options. You will find it.If not, tell me)Backup all user apps.leave out the system data.I haven't done otherwise, but somehow i am guesing motorola system settings and cm9 settings wont play nice.If you don't want to pay for titanium backup, use the free version (which does not have the batch backup option).Alternatively if you don't want anything to do with backup and just want a list of apps you have installed currently, then there is an option in titanium backup to export the list of installed apps as a text file.Which you can install manually later.Your call.Backup is done on your sd card. You will need free space.Somewhere around 300 mb or more.Actually keep at least 1 gb free. You will need it later on.
Now our next step is to install 2ndinit(i will explain what it is).But before that, you have to download a couple of things.
1.CM9 build(Quarx or epsylon,Your preference here)
2.Kernel file
3.Google Apps
Now if you have a defy, you will need the kernel file.If you have defy plus, skip over this part. You can find kernel files in the beginning of this post.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20097916&postcount=3 This is probably a very useful post..thanks to nogoodusername.Any doubts on what to download this should clear it up.If you still have any doubts tell me.
Now download your required cm9 build from here.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100
if you have a defy, download the cm7 kernel,if you have a defy running on a defy+ build(gingerbread)[Note:i am not talking about defy+ phone owners] download cm9 kernel. Both are available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20097916&postcount=3
Finally to Google Apps.Google had a run in with cyanogen community.Android as google sends out as opensource does not have gmail, gtalk and all google apps you usually find in a new phone. It means these apps are not opensource and you can't package it in any firmware without google's permission. So what the devs here in xda did is to provide cyanogenmod firmware files and google apps as seperate files.the google apps are what u find as gapps.zip or gapps-ics-20120304-signed.zip in forums.Download the file from here http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip Nearly 50 mb.
Now place all three files inside your sd card as such.Yes they are in zip files.Dont bother.Leave them as they are in zip formats.
Defy plus owners.Don't bother about kernel file.
Defy owners with defy and defy+ builds, place ur respective kernels in the sd card.
Now disconnect the usb if you haven't done so.
Now we move onto 2ndinit.
2ndinit is an app that requires superuser access privileges. This is one of the reasons why we root. Why it requires is this.Your defy Bootloader is locked. You can't touch it.But this isn't a bad thing. This is the reason why it is mightily difficult to brick your defy(bricking basically means screwing up your phone so much it wont start and essentially becomes nothing more than a paperweight, hence is as good as a brick)
What 2ndinit does is that it loads up right after the bootloader loads. And presents with you a new menu system(actually The Clockwork Recovery) which basically is your way to boot and install new roms such as cm7 and cm9.So if you screw up,since your bootloader is intact,if you have the original sbf(Original motorola firmware)you can simply use rsd lite to flash back to original condition.
How to install 2ndinit
The app was in the market. Not anymore.GO here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212. Download it.and place the apk file in your phone. For installing, make sure you have a file manager installed(such as es file manager or astro).Make sure you have enabled the installation of non market apps by Going to Settings > Applications 2) Check the box next to Unknown sources. Now with the file manager installed, browse to where you placed that 2ndinit apk file and install. Now open the app.It will ask you to install 2ndinit recovery.Chose the stable version stable with Cyanogen Builds(0.6.1).I have had no problems with that. Now it will start to download.Keep your wifi on or your data connection on.After that it will download. After download,Superuser will ask for access twice.Choose Yes for both. After installation,if everything goes well,u will have led light will be green. It will stay green till u reboot. This is fine and shows that upto now you are on right track. Before rebooting, disable usb debugging in Settings->Applications->Development and disable “USB Debugging“.Shut Down ur phone
Now start your phone. You should boot directly into Android Bootmenu. Here To move up and down the options, use volume up and volume down buttons.TO make a selection, press the power button(Don't press the power like u do it for shutdown.A small press will do).
Go to Backup and restore.Choose Backup.A Nandroid Backup will be created.Go back to root menu. The nandroid backup will be in a folder in your sd card.
Go to recovery. In recovery choose custom recovery.
If you are wondering what just happened,I will explain. As usual motorola bootloader loaded up as always, but this time, due to 2ndinit,we have a boot menu which kicks in right after the bootloader.Custom recovery is clockwork mod recovery which is the place where u do all ur installation of new roms and stuff.Boot option means you have option to boot into stock or cm9 firmware. You can tinker with this later.
On the other hand Nandroid Backup is something of a backup of your entire Rom and everything else.Just remember it is something you should fall back to in case you screw up.On the other hand Flashing original sbf is like the last option. If you flash Original Sbf,Then you have to go through the rooting thing and 2ndinit from scratch.A Nandroid Backup will save u from all that.It will restore ur rom just before u took backup. As good as new. Also Note Nandroid Backup is a lot different from titanium backup.titanium Backup is just user apps(and system settings if u choose it).Nandroid backup is a backup of your rom and therfore much more comprehensive.
Now back to the practical stuff.
When u choose custom recovery ,u enter Clockwork mod recovery.Choose to factory rest/wipe data option.Select Yes.After this.Select Wipe Cache Partition.Select Yes.
Now choose Install Zip from Sd card.
First choose your CM9 file.CONFIRM IT.
Next choose your Kernel file(if applicable).Confirm it.
Finally choose your google apps file.Confirm it.
All installations above are through the option "install zip from sd card".
Go to tools and delete dalvik cache.Dalvik Cache is a cache mechanism for your programs u previously installed. No need to go into the explanation here.
Thats it!!!!!!!!!!
Reboot.First time boot should take time.Time as in 2-3 min.Max 5min.
If you have screwed up,Your phone will not boot into ics and will stay at Motorola red logne way of screwing up is if you have flashed a defy+ build with a defy kernel. There are number of ways you could mess this up.Just follow this guide carefully.
Now if you screw up,you can boot into custom recovery and restore nandroid backup. For booting into custom recovery, shut down first. Then keeping the ‘Volume down’ key held, pressing the ‘Power’ key and then releasing the ‘Volume down’ key once you see the bootmenu screen, you will reach recovery. From there on,it is as i explained earlier.
Personally to tell u the truth,i have never restored a nandroid backup..Other forum members might help you if u have serious doubts.
Now if you are really really screwed,Flash your original sbf.
To do this first install motorola drivers
If you are using 32 bit version of windows
http://www.addictivetips.com/?attachment_id=44719
If you are using 64 bit
http://www.addictivetips.com/?attachment_id=44740
Next,Download RSD lite from here. This is a windows app.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348587.
Install and open in xp sp2 compatible mode.As your defy is bricked, the only thing u can do is to press volume up and press power button. This should bring it to bootloader mode. This is a black screen which says "bootloader mode" in the top and "ok to program" in the middle.
Connect your phone via usb.It should install some usb drivers.Browse to the sbf file you downloaded(the one i told in the beginning of this post.If the sbf file is in a zip, extract it.).And click Start. It will take about 5 min. After that your phone should reboot(that too will take time, fortunately look into the live logsheet in rsd lite.It should show a percentage completion).
Finally Your phone should be back as you bought it from the store.
A few words to everyone. What i wrote here is a bit of a layman's usage.I hope everyone who reads this guide gets an idea of what rooting and recovery and flashing is.I haven't gone into fixed sbfs, adb and the lot because the idea of this tutorial is to help others install cm9 and a backup plan if all hell breaks loose.Nothing more.if there are incorrect information in this i would be glad to hear and rectify.
please help

That's easy! You can find it here or here
You have the same SBF my phone came with! However I upgraded to 4.5.1-134-DFP-1321 . If you want that you can get it here but with that you won't be able to downgrade and will have to use Defy+ builds for everything (CM7 or CM9).

The ota to 1321 in India its known to fail! Check the official Moto users forum, u can see many people including me there asking for it!What I shared was original sbf dfp1321. Anyways there are only original sbf since it needs to be signed by Moto! And due to locked bootloader it is almost impossible to brick defy! Just keep flashing the correct sbf..

Yes you are doing it right however if you see any lags or booterrors(stuck in logo types) then do a data wipe from stock recovery... That's all.. Happy flashing

I am following this procedure.....
To Flash full SBFs,
here is the standard procedure:
Open RSD Lite:
1. Click on [ … ] Button and select your .SBF (Remember to rename to a short name and put it on root of your PC) and click Open.
2. Boot your phone into Bootloader Mode (How do I enter Bootloader Mode: With the Phone off press VOLUME UP, then while still pressed power up the phone. Keep the Vol key pressed until a black screen with some white letters appear. This is the Bootloader.).
3. Now connect your Defy to your PC
4. The START button on RSD Lite should be available now, click and wait.

Ok, here goes. First off, I searched. A lot. There is so much conflicting information and opinions out there. I hate to annoy you pros with noob-ness but I have to. Sorry!
Here is the quick version:
Friend gave me an Atrix 4G. He is big on experimenting, rooting, custom ROMs and all that. I am not. At all. I want to use it on t-mobile. I DO get a signal and can text. MMS doesn't work and motoblur wont let me set up an account. This results in no access to email other then Gmail. Basically, I want to bring the phone back to its original (or close as possible) state. Hopefully, that will solve some of my issues.
-Android Version
2.3.4
-Unlocked
-Rooted
-Build Number
olympus_hktw-userdebug 2.3.4 4.5.2A-5_OLH-3110614 test-keys
-Clockwork recovery mod installed (if that matters)
I am not THAT tech savvy but can follow instructions well. I've already been messing around but cant seem to get RSD Lite to actually flash properly. I dont care for customs ROMS, hacking and tinkering. I just want this phone to work as well as possible.
Can anyone give me some personal assistance? Please? Step by step would be great. I'll be refreshing this page often in hopes of responses.

It sounds like you need to set up a proper T-Mobile APN. (you have a T-Mobile SIM card currently installed?)
If you can get on Wifi, try to go the the Play store and download Tweakker or other APN utilities that enter the APN for your based on your carrier.

Yes. I have a t-mobile SIM card installed. My concern is what the previous owner may have done and whatever ROM is loaded on this phone. Can I somehow bring it back to stock or get a super stable, close to stock as possible ROM first and then start addressing the quirks I have?
Is this an AT&T branded phone? I'm not sure if getting back to stock is necessary, and if you do get back to stock, you might be SIM locked to AT&T (I could be wrong however). If you want to flash a fresh, stock ROM but still be rooted, SIM unlocked, etc., find a 2.3.6 Fruitcake in this forum or try NottachTrix 4G ROM.
however, I'd wait till others weighed in before doing anything. Honestly, I'd try getting your APN (download Tweakker app and walk through the steps) going now and if that solves your issue, your ROM might be working fine for you... my $0.02
oh, and welcome to XDA!

1. Download the fruitcake .zip you want (webtop also, if you want it)
2. Do a full wipe with fastboot (search if you're unsure how to)
3. Boot into recovery and flash the .zip you downloaded from step 1
4. Reboot and you're done
This will put you back to stock. I can't remember if fruitcakes are pre-rooted, but if not you can easily root again.
Alright, now we're getting somewhere.
co.ag
The phone itself says "unlocked" upon startup. I got the network unlock code direct from AT&T because at first the phone wouldn't even recognize my t-mo SIM. Phone is now network unlocked.
Ghost
gonna search now for fruitcake and see what thats all about. Do I need webtop?
Then going to get fastboot. Guess I dont need RSD Lite anymore?
Im doing this because I dont know what the previous owner has done and would like a clean slate. Kind of like changing the oil on a used car you buy, even if the PO says it was done.
Ok so,
I found fastboot with recovery tool and the .exe files within the ZIP dont do anything.
The fruitcake ZIP file I downloaded according to your link, I'm not sure what to do with that. lol
Help?
**am I supposed to be saving these files to the phone itself? If so, where? Internal storage? SD card?

that "unlocked" bit on start up means your bootloader is unlocked, doesn't have anything to do with the SIM card. All this means is that you can flash a ROM since the phone is "unlocked"

the fruitcake .zip goes on your internal sdcard. BUT, before you start doing anything, please go through the stickied threads in this section and read up on how to flash ROMs to your phone. This will include how to wipe your phone using the fastboot commands and how to flash the fruitcake .zip.
start here, read this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
then follow guides to
"HOW TO INSTALL FRUITCAKES ON 2.3.4 (GREAT SBF/RSD ALTERNATIVE!!!)"
and
"ROMs & Kernels:
FYI:
Before installing any ROM or Kernel I suggest you do the following to help prevent error, boot-loops, etc. Also, it's a good idea to flash a new ROM or Kernel on a fully charged device:
1) Download which ever ROM or Kernel you plan on flashing and have the .zip on your device ready to flash.
2) Backup your apps (not system data), contacts, etc. Also consider making a CWM backup of your device, just in case.
3) Boot into CWM Recovery
4) Wipe Dalvik Cache (under advanced in CWM)
5) Wipe Cache Partition
6) Wipe data/factory reset
6a) If you're using ROM Manager/CWM you will need to reboot the device after step 5, and upon reboot enter fastboot mode and enter the command: "fastboot -w" or "moto-fastboot -w" if you prefer using moto-fastboot. Then type "fastboot reboot" and upon reboot make sure to enter Android Recovery again, so that you can flash the ROM/Kernel.
7) Install .zip from SD Card (choose the .zip you wish to install)
8) If you installing a radio, theme, kernel, etc. on top of a ROM, I would suggest redoing the whole wipe process again between flashes.
9) Reboot the Device
- If you get a boot loop, try entering Android recovery and re-wiping the chace and data, and perhaps try reflashing the ROM/Kernel. Or if you made a CWM backup, you can always restore that."

Ok, sorry I wasn't that detailed in my other post and assumed you were on your phone (my bad). First things first, read the N00b guide.
1. Anytime you download CWM .zips, put them on the root of your phone's sdcard. You'll need them there in order access them from recovery. ( note: sdcard=internal sd card & sdcard-ext=external sd card for blur ROMS )
2. Fastboot commands are executed from the command line. Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory containing fastboot.exe in order to use it. The Noob guide should have links to all the fastboot commands you'll need.
3. With the Atrix's unlocked BL, holding Volume Down when turning the phone on will bring up a series of bootmodes to choose from. This is how you get into fastboot, recovery, RSD, etc. Navigate through the choices with Volume Down. Select one by pressing Volume Up. You should only ever really need Fastboot and Android Recovery.
4. CWM is used to flash .zips (ROMS, kernels, apps) while in recovery mode. Use romracer's to make things easier on yourself later.
Read through the N00b guide and this will all make perfect sense.
I have no idea what Im doing. I think because this phone has been tampered with so much already, it's making it extra tough to work with.
I managed to install CM7. Its the only ZIP file that actually seemed to take. I still dont understand fastboot , in the sense that I don;t know when Im supposed to see a command prompt. Also, now, CM7 is asking me to upgrade to premium and I have to pay for it. There doesnt seem to be a free way of installing it so that I can sync all my info through my google account. Ugh. Im not cut out for this but Ive been screwing with this literally since 730 this morning.
**CM7 with google apps packet installed. So far, so good. Im happy with this considering its pretty close to stock gingerbread, kinda like my G2. Now, Im hopefully done messing around. Would be nice if they release a solution for the fingerprint scanner or if I can get my gmail to auto sync but at least I can stop obsessing for the time being. Great help guys, thanks so much!!!!
Hello everybody I got brand new Motorola Defy+ and I want to have newest version of android on it. I am not familiar with rooting etc and unsure if this is possible theres instruction in videos description on youtube "How to Install Android Nougat on Motorola DEFY+ (Android 7.1.1/CM14.1)" ( I can not post links) If not I am curious what is the safest and easiest way to root the device and if theres available newer system than KitKat for my device
Moreover I wanted to install roehsoft ram expander as the phone got only 512 MB of RAM but test says it has to have compatible kernel from what I remember. Not sure if I have to install new operating system in the first place and then root the phone or the opposite and what kernel it has to have to work properly. As I said before I am not experienced android user its my first device with this system
Thank you in advance ppl peace!
Amazing, Motorola Defy+ is cool in its segment but can this slim hardware keep up with such a bulky Android version?
It's said in KittyKat threads here phone has a tendency to stutter with KK (as such a demanding OS), and how about Nougat?
Anyway it'd be nice if somebody adjust Nougat to work worth Defy+. Especially it is needed to optimize battery consumption in idle.
And about rooting, you can just run apk called FramaRoot and job is done
Afterwards run SndInitDefy_2.3 and you will have custom recovery installed (CWM), it is just as simple as it!
http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5965fe184202f/Framaroot-1.9.3.apk
http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5965fe43f2a32/SndInitDefy_2.3.apk
Afterwards, make a nandroid backup and, using already installed custom recovery CWM (which is clumsy, without touch support), you may want to flash TWRP. If so then flash defy_twrp_recovery_2.6.3.0.zip, e.g. from this link:
http://d-h.st/users/tejus.k.v
Although attention: this flashes recovery TWRP to the system partition (probably the phone's recovery partition is to small) overwriting the android system which is already there, so after doing this you must flash some ROM.
It is described in the second post of this KittyKat ROM thread: [ROM] [4.4.2] SlimKat (jordan) [STABLE 4.0] [Weekly 3.85] [Unofficial]
And see Installation Instructions section, good luck! ?

Thank you for your help! My phone dont want to turn on anymore. I've done everything carefully up to the following point"Wipe /data, /cache, and /system in TWRP or use defy_safewipe.zip" (after that I wanted to flash this: "Slim-mb526-4.4.2.build.4-UNOFFICIAL-20140407-2344.zip" cos its ROM right?), but and when it asked me to slide back to the right blue arrow to confirm, my phone booted up and then died after motorola logo. Green led lighted up before death. It seems that it wasnt safe thing despite the name. What to do now? Can I recovery it?
--
UPDATE: ok its working again , Ive tried combo "up volume" and "power" buton.
Now Ive got no idea what "Gapps" or "Slimroms addons you want" are, but after mad long startup (with SlimKAT logo on the screen), it seems that this system is working. Its much faster than befo I can see. It's RUNNING!
--
UPDATE 2: Play Store refuses to open on this new system after I installed it. "Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped."
I have just flashed this ROM:
[Kitkat][Nightlies] CM11 Android 4.4 for the Defy(+), it is the most advanced so far as I can see, the freshest release is cm-11-20161124-NIGHTLY-mb52x so half a year old.
If you read instructions on this thread you can see it's installation is somewhat tricky.
It includes rearranging partitions layout and sizes.
If you really want experimenting with flashing Nougat you will probably need the technique to change partitions sizes, and you may edit the values inside the resize.zip according to individual needs (post #5595)
And the half of the links from the first post are empty, however in the middle of the thread there are still working links.
After all it's better to follow this version of installing instructions (post #5584)
Also you can find some files here: http://defy.svolkov.name/quarx2k.ru/
I have done partitions resizing, bootstrap, and managed to flash the first ROM, version: cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip,
however wrongly have done cache & Dalvik reset just after resizing (and before ROM flashing): the result is ROM is working well but cannot boot into recovery anyway (and can't recreate recovery anyway either, even doing:
Code:
cat /sdcard/bootstrap_ext3.img > /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
as suggested in the post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57221743&postcount=6510)
And I'd like have the freshest version, the only way is to flash stock and do everything from a start again. Please if you can, how to flash stock? It is said elsewhere the most critical in it is choosing the right version of sbf file, choosing inappropriate would brick a phone irreversibly! And how to know which one to choose, tutorials here are so convoluted and discussions so chaotic! Afraid of touching anything though!
As far as the ROM itself, although it is the first only cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip it works amazingly well!
It boots quickly, is fast, RAM friendly, nice!
(It has little overclocked processor and this makes using the phone so comfortably, just little overclocked so hardware friendly too!)

Again I want to thank you for your response. On the verion of system Ive installed I cant use my camera for video recording because of lack of some codecs it says and I cant watch YouTube. 'Google Services' crashes. The only way I could download some decent apps was from 'Aptoide'. 'Roehsoft Ram Expander' needed Google services so it wont open (ive download 'Kernel audiutor' however I dont have class 10 card yet so I dont know if its good at all). I wont be fighting with this anymore, I am going to try mentioned 'CM11 Android 4.4 for the Defy(+)'.
So I have to go "Recovery" in this secret startup menu before I install it? I mean do I have downgrade my system before instalation of new one? Or just follow the instructions straight from the beggining I dunno. But I dont want any complicated things you know..
--
The links are dead, but Ive found them files:
defy.7z
Now, you metrioned two rom's but which one is less tricky, cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip or cm-11-20161124-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip?
You know, I have installed cm-11-20161124-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip at last, after exciting night of attempting flashing any stock ROM and then following the procedure exactly from the first post of "[Kitkat][Nightlies] CM11 Android 4.4 for the Defy(+)"
and the updated files: new_bootstrap and resize, found here
It costed many efforts of blindly "trial and error" flashing one by one stock ROMs, until found the one which turned on my phone with anything else than black screen!
And everything it was to have possibility of flashing cm-11-20161124-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip instead of already running cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip.
And you know what? The version cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip seemed running better than the freshest one!
It was, what is most important: faster!!!
And anything else seems the same (so far)!!!
Is the any rationale behind hustle and bustle of flashing the "NIGHTLY" and exactly for what?
Question of stability which user gets know only after some time?
Anyway the speed is everything in such thin hardware like Defy+ and i can't resist an impression cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip is way faster!
And what's more, you probably can flash cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip without the whole convoluted procedure of resizing partitions! (needs checking, if you want simplest way you had better resize partitions )
In fact this version of ROM is the same as:
Quarx said:
8. Install cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip (It's latest cm11 from 23sep with changes for new table)
Click to collapse
but cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip was to try if the only resizing procedure itself worked at all (and for users to send feedback).
In fact resizing partitions is needed only for the next ROM versions (of which the freshest is cm-11-20161124-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip):
"the nightlies AFTER 01 Oct are for the new partition table".
(Aha, cm-11-20161124-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip probably is odexed, while cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip is deodexed, it needs confirmation)
And if you needed flashing stock and had doubts how, then write, I'd gladly help and share the knowledge painstakingly acquired this night.
It is amazingly simple and safe, there're few simple basic things but if you needed found them by yourself in this forum you would probably get panicked
It is about how simple things people can mess up! ?

Thank you my friend. Ive installed cm11.0-defy-newlife.zip. Its fine because my camera can now record videos but still it cant play it. :crying:
YouTube videos also wont load, however internet is fast and so on.

Google Play still dont work, same error. I kinda came to terms with it as I have Aptoide, but I want to use YouTube..
And what do you use to watch YouTube videos? Advise third party apps, e.g. SnapTube etc, instead of YouTube application. In fact forgot installing gapps at all and it makes me happy You only now made me think about it In such thin hardware it is better to have microG (μG) (for apps refusing running without Google Services) and/or Yalp Store for Play Market access
If you insist using bulky Google then try opengapps.org

Ive read on some native forum that after codecs instalation he problem disappeared I try to find some
I have just recorded a video of my dog, sent it via email (AquaMail), received it in a mail to myself and played it with system player, pretty well!
It is possible freshest NIGHTLY ROM has issues solved, how to check it (without Google)?
And can you play videos self recorded with this phone?
OpenGapps.org provides you ability to choose what package, how complex (I always choose "pico"), and for what platform (yes, KittyKat is still supported) you download.

Yes, you can change for e.g.
"Installing the best ROM nowadays for Defy (+)"
And it is said Defy and Defy+ is the same hardware, just plus is rebranded and has overclocked processor (to 1GHz) and bit bigger battery, see section "Facts" in [GUIDE] All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide
or "Yielding Defy competitive nowadays"
It is still phone unique on the market, searched something for summer, a little waterresistant phone which could suit to any even tiniest pocket. And found Defy is just the only one in this kind, nowadays producers offer big smartphones and if you want something little & watertight then you can buy modern smartwatch - thanx, prefer Defy: bigger battery, faster, and of incomparable comfort of usage, for peanuts! Ive just followed the steps here did exactly what is written step by step from the beggining.
I think now the only is playing videos. Videos I have recorded (on the phone) can be played back only in vlc but still with lags. Same for vids online, however if I choose mobile version of YouTube and try to play stream in vlc it worx but very poor quality. I tried many things without any success, for eg. Flash Fox but the problem is rather in system files than settings and apps itself.
In my custom system I could playback any video.

It's irrelevant for video playing but I think it is better to follow the first post from the thread and use the files:
new_bootstrap & resize (instead of PrepareZip_1 & PrepareZip_2),
new_bootstrap has different size than PrepareZip_1 and is newer, something has been changed.

You see, I play with phone system player any videos recorded with phone system camera application without any problem.
Is the newest NIGHTLY ROM better in the sense the issues have been ultimately repaired?
If so, make android backup of data partition, reboot into TWRP, wipe cache, Dalvik, data (factory reset), and flash the newest NIGHTLY!
(Yet if you enjoy playing with comparing the two system you may wait )
And maybe before flashing next ROM do these newer new_bootstrap.zip & resize.zip flashing (just in case: of avoiding extra issues).

If so, make nandroid backup of data partition, reboot into TWRP, wipe cache, Dalvik, data (factory reset), and only then (but immediately without rebooting after wiping) do these newer new_bootstrap.zip & resize.zip flashing!
The files you can find here
After flashing NIGHTLY successfully, boot it, follow the initial wizard etc, check if it works ok, and if so reboot into TWRP again to restore your data nandroid backup.
If you don't care about previous data give in with it and configure your Android anew
