ICS panic thread - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Personally I feel there's much too much new threads either complaining on the new stock ICS ROM, or spreading panic/FUD.
Wouldn't it be much easier for everybody to have all non-essential posts in one thread?
If so please post it all here, leaving remaining Note fora relatively clean.
Please.

yep, i think we need official guides:
1) if the ICS roms are safe
2) the safest way to get from GB to ICS
3) the safest way to get back from ICS to GB

yup,
some sticky PSA and a guide by dr ketan would also be nice...

It links to several other threads on the same topic, we don't need any more.

I know <sigh>.
Probably my command of English is insufficient to express my intentions in clearer way, but I wish - so hard it almost hurts - that the flood of ICS related rubbish would stop. All the whining and moaning and especially boasting of those who did not follow flashing instruction and survived.
There is a few well documented informative threads on the subject, which contain all there is to know, but the valuable information gets flooded by all the rubbish, increasing confusion of those who need to know, and frustration of those who do. I know it's impossible to make the rubbish disappear, so - I thought - let's channel the waste to one sewer, errm, thread.
Yeah I know, not gonna happen...

I don't know if I should interpret this post as sarcasm or as flame bait. All he did was ask you if you were still confused on the directions, yet you come out flaming him. Maybe tell us what part of flashing the bootloader you are confused on? We can't read your mind...

My question was in no way meant to be sarcastic or demeaning.
It was meant to get two questions answered. A) if you had seen the thread and/or at least glimpsed the thread and b) if you had attempted to understand the topic at hand or just take a shortcut and have people do the legwork for you.
That is all I was trying to find out, and depending on the answer to my post, then decide on where to start you off at.

[21 Nov 2011][Video Tutorial]HTC HD2: How To Install Ice Cream Sandwich - Android 4.0

Hey guys, made a video tutorial on how to install ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich)
In the video i show you how to install tytungs NexusHD2 ICS ROM. I know other roms may use slightly different methods but you can modify my tutorial to work on your rom e.g. if the rom your installing tells you that you need a 250mb partition, then flash a 250mb partition instead of the 200mb one that i use in the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpuuwvZQRPI
also made a walkthrough/demo of tytungs rom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcdeaWB-lWM
No offense, but is this really necessary? And in the development subforum? After this long in the HD2's lifecycle im sure just about everyone knows how to flash a rom, as this isn't any different to install than any other android rom. Regardless, props for trying to help people out.
video tutorials are the pits... pictorials are where it's at.
reasoning? You can't update a video, you just have to post a brand new one, and either delete the old one or put a link for the new one in the old one, this is not conducent to clear understanding.

Agreed. This is pretty pointless.
There are plenty of guides already and this isnt really specific to ICS anyway, The steps are basically same for all roms.

the thing is some people actually don't know how to do it, i agree that most people should, but i get messaged all the time on my youtube channel asking how to flash stuff or asking me to help them with problems they are having flashing roms. and it may be pointless to you but if it helps a few people then its not pointless.

Problem is people don't search anymore.
Everything about flashing can be found at the right places, shouldn't be so hard!
If you can't find it, then you're not smart enough to flash it anyway.....
It's no rocket science!
Hmmm. I think this thread although made with good intentions is unnecessary and confusing. The tiltle suggests that there's some special method of flashing ics. Clearly there isn't and there are guides tutorials all over the place (including stickies) for flashing everything.

But if these "few" don't have the mental capacity to look at sticky topics or use search then they shouldn't be attempted to flash their phone in first place.
Thans for trying to be helpfull. But really this topic is pointless.
Its standard procedure not different from any other rom. And there is no point in making tutorial for every ROM. Only difference is in recovery size, cache...etc.
This is way backward and redundant, shouldn't be in dev thread, better place is in Q&A.
No offense but pls close this thread...

Agreed, not sure what the OP was thinking tbh. Is he/she/somebody else going to create a video guide for every rom even though steps are same?
Well at least, tytung's work has been featured on many websites, partially thanks to that video (it's a known fact that blogs prefer to add a video to a post).

Yes but that has got nothing to do with posting the said video in a dev thread. This rom does not need any special installation and is no different any other install and does not need to be in a dev forum.

IMO the only thing wrong with this thread is that it could cause some confusion as people may think that ICS uses a different flashing method. The thread placement is, as far as I'm concerned, fine

How To Update From GB to ICS For Noobs

There are some people here who need to manually update their Note from GB to ICS and need a simple guide suitable for noobs. Here is a link to a site which has simple guides for doing that using PC Odin and Mobile Odin.

We won't use the thanks button this time round.
Oh dear, it seems I have boobed in my attempt to be helpful. If so then I ask for my thread to be closed.

I understand the PSA is warning against flashing with the official LPY update from Samsung. I don't think Samsung have withdrawn the update or acknowledged any risk.
If your kid gets hit by a ferrari i am sure that ferrari will not withdraw their car, nor admit that they are dangerous..
But just ignore all the warnings and be a happy camper
The battery savings are worth the risk for me. But that's just me.

It would appear that the advice from xda-developers is that it is safe to flash the official Samsung German LPY update and a guide is provided here:
http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-note/
Perhaps someone could explain why there appears to be a conflict between the PSA and the xda-developers.
Maybe because that article is ten days old ???
And considering all the work done this week,
10 days is like a man's life....
I recommend the ParanoidAndroid because it's on a safe kernel. I found a guide on the same website you provided.

How the hell do you translate that into "safe to flash" - Both of the last two articles make references to the dangers of Samsung ICS kernels.

Guys, are u aware of buggy samsung kernels

only for leaked firmware and we have official roms from sammy
Sounds like the Siyah RC6 kernel.
Then again, leaked kernels are leaked kernels. Responsibility is to those who flashes them. The problem is that plenty of people dont seem to understand that flashing anything is a risk that they choose to take.

I truly believe so, I remember in one of the discussions that the developer used some sources from the korean version kernel.

I bricked my device while fixing permission in recovery. Sent it to maintenance got it back 10 days later, they had to do a board swap. Didn't tell them anything about flashing or what just told them it went off and didn't switch on again . I m from Belgium

[MINI GUIDE] Phone Vocabulary - x8 Specific

This thread is being created to explain, in short, a few common phone 'terms.' Now although there are many threads explaining the same thing they are 'thicker' and written differently. A different guide will help a different person. I think it is valid that there is more than one explanation of the same thing. If you have ANY suggestions, please leave them in post form below. I have explained this relative to the Xperia x8 and this is why it is in our territory.
Remember that this is a MINI guide. So not every term in the android language will be explained. For a more complicated guide see HERE or on the everything x8 w8 thread here. Both guides are different.
Anyway Here is a mini guide about phone terms:
A ROM stands for Read Only Memory, ususally on this site referring to the phone's internal memory where your apps are stored. It's like an operating system. (OS) When people say they're flashing a new ROM, it usually means they are installing a new 'operating system'. A custom rom may have new features different to the STOCK rom.
The term Stock usually means the version of something installed by the manufacturer. Or in other words, the stuff already on that thing.
An .APK is a Package on Android. Usually you will meet these when installing apps on your phone. This is, simply put, just a file extension, like .exe on windows.
Rooting is simply giving your phone administrators rights. No roms or anything. Once rooted you could install clockworkmod which would allow you to install a rom that would work on you STOCK kernel (the one that comes with xperia).
A kernel is a set of instructions to a phone. different kernels or custom kernels (not stock) enable you to flash some more advanced roms as not all roms will work on STOCK kernel.
Also, in most cases, different kernels allow overclock and undervolt. These things allow you to make your device run faster.
Unlocking your BootLoader is required to install a custom kernel. Unlocking a bootloader can be difficult and if done wrong, can brick your device completely.(make it useless like a brick) This is why I did not do it until a few weeks ago - because I was scared. If you do however find yourself bricked, look to my guide no further than HERE.
You flash kernels with Flashtool. But you MUST have an unlocked BootLoader to do this.
If I was to recommend a rom, I would say MiniCyanogenmod (CM for short). The developer, nAa, focuses on getting the galaxy nexus android - pure version. Check out my review on the stable ever wonderful MiniCM9 HERE.
Links to Flashtool, ROMS and other things mentioned will be in my other guides hyperlinked in the article.
Please be generous with the 'Thanks' if you appreciate my effort.
Special Thanks to I Am Nice for his consistent helpful feedback
