Flash back to ICS Stock Bootloader. Remove Superuser. Run a stock kernel. Looks like a good plan to me. Or just run a stock ICS.

I would probably root first. There is always a chance that the new updates will block root and it will take a long time to root again.
If you want the OTA you'll need to have a stock recovery and not be rooted.
If you don't care about the OTA and would rather flash something from one of the devs then go ahead and install CWM and root.
It's easy enough to go back to stock and all the tools and files you need are available in the dev forum.

Doubt it. There still isnt a complete guide to rooting/restoring the galaxy tab 10.1. The dev forum just has crude bits and pieces of the process layed out in a sloppy manner.

Oh hi troll.
Here is a quick guide for the OP:
CWM + Stock recovery images here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150732
Root here: http://droidbasement.com/galaxy/tools/su_busybox_misc-sam_tab_10.1-061611.zip
HC 3.1 OTA here: http://droidbasement.com/galaxy/sys-backup/hc_31/hc-3.1_ota-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip
To install a 3rd party rom flash CWM via Odin then flash the rom of your choice (all of them are pre-rooted except for the a couple of the older euro TW leaks).
To return to stock, flash the 3.1 OTA via CWM, then use Odin to flash the stock recovery.
Done.

Rooted ICS ROM RA or CWM Flashable ICS Posted!

Fully rooted ICS ROM, using Ra recovery or CWM flashable.
Rom is up, it's 3:44 am here (EST). Off to bed!
Thanks! I still wonder where that image comes from during boot up. It's like a snapshot of my home screen on the previous rom.

It's happening on all ICS ROMs using the newest modified stock kernel. Nothing to be alarmed about lol
Newb sorry, but let me get thist straight. If i flash this rom on stock 3.2.1, this will give me a rom and root? Or do i need to be rooted first? sorry for the newb question.
You need to be rooted first, then install a custom recovery (ClockworksMod [CWM] or RA).

Updated link!
File size?
Half a gig for this ROM? Is that going to be normal for ICS roms, or is there extra studff in here that won't be part of the official release (other than the images, and mentioned Polaris).
Just wondering...
Thanks for the ROM, though!

How to"re root" a500 after receiving ics ota from Acer

I did some searching and did not find a direct answer to this. Feel free to lock this thread if this has been answered.
I flashed back to my original stock ROM from when I rooted my device. I went through the series if updates, to this morning and and updated to ics. I have lost root access. So the question is.... Is there a way to root my device on ics without downgrading. I got to have my AD free and battery saving app

this worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546593
I saw this earlier. I guess the leak could be what I have? I will have to check the firmware and compare it to what is listed. Thanks btw I will try this later tonight and update if this worked.

I have same situation. I had rooted HC 3.2.1. Yesterday I made the update to stock ICS. I have to say that I am not happy with this new rom. It is not so smooth and fast that I expected. I am intrested to install some nice and fast custom rom. How to do it? What is need to be done to root and install the ClockworkMod??????
Worked perfectly and easily on mine. Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1
I used the method as above, coming from the stock ota. And it worked I was able to use the battery saver and TB. I don't have a custom recovery, in order to do a back up for the time being but that is okay for now.
Edit: I see there is a bunch more threads started with this same topic so feel free to shut this down.
Hey did you unroot before installing the OTA ICS update? Also, what about recovery?
Acer_A500_041.205.01_COM_GEN2
Just to clarify, the root method for the ICS leak works on the US ICS OTA? (Acer_A500_041.205.01_COM_GEN2)
I just want to make sure, as I am being offered the OTA update from stock rooted Acer_A500_7.014.02_COM_GEN2. I want to make sure I can re-root if I do the update. Otherwise, I'll just wait for a CWM-flashable rooted version. Or has someone already posted that that I've missed?
Yes I was rooted. Then went back to my original stock ROM and stock recovery then went through all the updates. I updated this morning to the stock ics from Acer. Then used the thread above to root again. However I do not have a custom recovery at the moment but root access apps are working just fine. Which is all I need for now.(I live in southern Michigan)
thanks. A question about your custom recovery...Does Acer Recovery Installer no longer work to install CWM again? Or have you just not attempted to re-install CWM?

okay cool thanks. What did you use to unroot? For flashing back to stock recovery I will use "Acer Recovery Installer".
I tried using iconiaroot which I used to root but it still won't unroot my tablet. I even tried restarting and still nothing.
I lost root when doing the updates to clarify. And no I do not have a recovery at the moment, which I don't need because I am running ics with rooted apps that is all I need. I have no reason to flash a custom ROM. I will let the developers work with this for a bit and I will probably check it or later

Okay great thanks. Glad to know it still worked, flashing the ota update with still having root. Only thing that worries me is I flashed back to stock recovery using that program an went I booted to recovery, it was exclamation point inside a triangle. Hope that doesn't affect my update process.

I hope a root option comes out that doesn't require a ROM like gingerbreak. Maybe it's not possible for ICS or there aren't any developers interested in working on it, I don't know, but I'll wait.
It shouldn't your stock recovery is different then a custom recovery ie cwm. You will have to find another thread or something to flash a custom recovery. If your wanting to have a custom ROM. I have no need for it. So to put this into a nut shell.
Flash back to stock ROM (honeycomb)
Flash stock recovery.
Except the ota.
Use the link in first post to"re root"your device.
You will have a stock ROM from Acer that has root access. No recovery.
I Hope this makes it clear as mud:sly:
Hit the thanks button if any of this helped you, good day.

Wouldn't Rootkeeper be able to restore root after the update? It worked when I updated my Razr to the leaked ICS.

okay. sorry for all the questions, but does it matter what version of HC I'm on? You say flash back to stock, is that just if I was running a custom rom? I can't find the sdcard I have my backups on but I'm running completely stock 3.2.1 HC. Just rooted and running CWM.
No ICS Update for me, Rooted 3.2, Need Help!
I thought having my tablet simply rooted wouldnt cause a big issue, i didnt flash it, im still running 3.2 gen 2 but no update for ics has appeared, when checking for update it says im up to date, ive checked several times, tried looking into it seeing if i had to unroot somehow which ive found no program that will unroot my tablet successfully i do not want to wipe because last time i rooted it wiped and i lost alot of important data i couldnt back up. Someone please advise me or send me the Canadian/USA Update Zip or other location for the official ics. Thanks!

flash rom with stock recovery?

simple question. can i flash flexreaper rom with stock ics 4.0.3 recovery? or do i have to unlock bootloader and install custom recovery first? i have limited access to a pc and just got rooted this morning
You should be able to. Be sure to flash the honeycomb kernel parts immediately after flashing the ROM.

simple answer: no you cannot flash much of anything with the stock recovery.
If you want flexreaper then yes its best to flash the patched bootloader. Have the rom on yr sdcard ready to install once you've flashed the bootloader/custom recovery.
You can use the locked bootloader (3.01) with some of the flexreaper roms but be warned, its not the optimal solution. If you go this route you will need acer recovery installer to flash a custom recovery first.

No I never had the Hc uid I updated to ota straight out of the box. I have my current uid tho. it's not that I'm against flashing I just have limited access to a PC and to install programs and go through the whole process with someone elses PC is basically unreasonable.

yeh fair enough. I ran stock OTA ics for a month or so and was reasonably happy with it...civato's stock ics rom was better though...and as far as his flex series of roms go they are the absolute best!!

Help with 4.1.2

Hi guys this is the first time i have rooted and flashed a device. I managed rooting my N7 and flashing PA Rom and Motley kernel. Now I want to flash back to stock rom and update to 4.1.2 via OTA or directly flash the official 4.1.2 pure stock. However I still want to maintain root and CWM. Is this possible? Can someone please help me out with details as kind of a noob. I even want to understand how Titanium Backup works. If i backup my apps and then do a factory reset while flashing a new rom how does the backup remain if everything is lost in factory reset. Thanks a lot for helping.

Do it manually like I did, its just as quick as the OTA, you keep all your files and I didn't loose root, was done in 5 mins.

The update can only be applied to a completely stock rom, if you have made any changes to the rom(build.prop edits, etc) the zip will fail to flash

You need a stock RUU, but I'm not sure where to find those. Once you have the stock RUU, adb push the update and your all strawberries and cream
The update will fail if build.prop is modifed and most custom roms modify that. So it would be safer to flash stock image and sideload the update.
Or else wait for the custom ROM developer to incorporate those changes.
