[Q] Conversion/flashing CM9 using Racks dualboot for SD - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here's my issue. I was using the latest racks prepared boot for CM9. The one dated 5/1 or so. I decided I wanted to try my hand at converting a nightly and flashing it on my own. I've been having nothing but trouble with the conversion process and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
And I've tried a few different ones of Eyeballers nightlies, but I'm always getting the same error. I just tried it using the Android script and the windows script and I'm getting different issues in each.. When I try to convert in dos, i'm getting really tiny files and most of the time it gives me a bunch of lines with items not found.
I'm really new at this but I've looked and was unable to find any answer to why this wouldnt be working or even what i could be doing wrong. I can get into the recovery, I install the converted nightly and when I try to boot into it I just get a black screen, I waited a few minutes to make sure it wasnt just something with the the device or just a first time thing but nothing happened.
on the android version I get the error attached. Im not sure how else to say whats going wrong but if someone has some suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

You might get a better response if you post this question in Racks conversion thread. Here:

unfortunately I am not able to until I reach the 10 post threshold. but rather than spam to hit that. I figured I'd try this first. Thanks though. Hopefully he'll still see this.

1.Are you using latest version of script 1.3?
2.Did you try the terminal emulator for running script?
3.Did you try to delete and extract again the folders of the c2dsd in case something went wrong during first extraction?

thanks for posting there for me.

1. I updated both scripts and was still getting issues.
2. if you mean the one on android then yes, thats what I was using. I also tried it using the cmd on windows.
3. I've tried that at least two times with each including redownloading all aspects of it to make sure that wasn't the case.

Not sure about the windows issue. I'll have DizzyDen take a look at that. But with the Android version, i'll take a look at that in a little while. Looks like it's another mistake on my end. Mkimage is dependent on 'libmusl.so' which I did not include in the tools folder. I overlooked this tidbit because I had "BOTBREW" installed on my system so it never complained about linking to it.
Sorry for all the problems. I'll try and have a fix ASAP. Your feedback is much appreciated. Can't fix things if I don't know if their broken or not.
Thanks,
Racks
EDIT: Fixed I believe. Please try the v1.3a for the Android script.

I'm looking into the DOS version as we speak....

You guys are all really amazing for helping me out.
And as probably mentioned before by rasta Im not sure what the issue is but theres still something not quite gelling for the version. I took another screen to hopefully help you identify where its going weird. It is a little different but its still that crc cd issue. Im not going to try to flash it to see if it works, only because Im pretty certain that won't do it. But I really appreciate you looking into it.
and for clarity I also get a very similar if not exactly the same message when It trys to do the gapps as well. (using the 4/29 signed gapps)
And I decided now to try flashing the rom. it worked. Fantastically! though the boot animation is freezing. I dont even care about that since its actually working again. Awesome. But.. now im having those same issues as Rasta with the gapps. I flashed them and when I went to reboot it brought me to stock. When I converted them, i converted them with the rom. That rom worked. the gapps did not. if theres anything else I can help just ask and Ill try to do. Im just so happy to have a bootable CM9 again. Thank you so much

Thanks for the feedback... looking into gapps issue now... is this for primary or alternate?

Everything I'm referring to is for the alternate. Also not sure if this has anything to do with it but the calendar is broken with the gapps back from the novemeber or whenever dual boot apps. But flashing the fix doesnt fix it anymore, and then a reboot after that brings me to stock.
Also, im having issues doing a factory reset on stock when i take the SD card out.. is there something that clockwork did when it was trying to flash an incorrect rom?

If you want to return to stock situation, you probably should wipe everything and find stock image to flash.

I think I'm going to start using a rar format - might be a way to differentiate between the actual release and the update.zip inside. Not sure why I didn't think of that, before.
Still not that simple for me, since even a "Gtablet Vet" like myself tried the OP method and failed. My second out of box new Gtablet went in perma-loop when simply installing straight to 2.0, via recovery folder & update.zip. Ended up having to get CW on the device by putting on the sd card, remapping command and stopping the loop with power + volume to get CW installed. I then had to install TnT 1.02 and then finally got 2.0 installed after that (cache and data wipe of course).
Cleanest way seems install 1.02 via recovery folder / update.zip method and then install 2.0 the same way. Thats is unless I just had bad luck with second Gtablet. VERY possible.
added:
Frankly, we seem at the stage now where CW seems a survival requirement- IF you want to keep trying new roms & updates.

u didn't think of it because it was only a problem to ppl that half read the instructions, downloaded the zips and just tried to install as-is...
Also don't understand why ppl want to keep standard recovery, clockwork is made to install custom roms so its easier for these task

The only issue with cwm is that it's not easy to remove it, once you have it. I think you need to use nvflash to get rid of it. I love cwm but I can't assume that everyone uses it.
And trust me, not everyone does. I sees posts here and I get PM's as well, and many people are still using standard recovery.

I have found that you can put the stock recovery img (let's call it recovery-stock.img) on the sdcard and get an adb shell while booted into cw recovery. Then it's just a
Code:
flash_image recovery recovery-stock.img
That should get you back to stock recovery.

I had to go back to stock at first because I kept getting status 7 errors with CW. Roebeet's suggestion to partition sdcard with CWR seems to have solved that.

Flashed 2.0.0
I liked TnT 2.0.0 and it really helped performance but the gtab is still full of issues....
Out of the box my Gtab's proprietary email and photo app forced closed before ever loading. the viewsonic update didn't fix it and so I flashed it with TnT 2.0.0.
I got a System UID's warning while I did it and I guess that was the cause of those apps not working. I then did a system reset to factory default or whatever its called and lost everything but after flashing TnT 2.0.0 again it worked a lot better and the email app worked great, photo app still doesn't work. My new problems are that the sound and and flash don't work anymore. I reinstalled flash and the browser just crashes whenever flash is involved with a site. Sound will sometimes work when I first boot up but it quits after a while, especially after waking from sleep. A lot of the time I get crackles and pops when I first boot up or wake it from sleep.
I am returning this Gtab and I am going to buy another one from somewhere else in hopes that I don't get these issues out of the box.....I haven't read anywhere that anyone has experienced these specific problems other than the sound; as this is a TnT error; so I warn all, DON'T BUY FROM STAPLES!!!

[Q] Error formatting /data!

Self-dangerous noob here. NC 1.2, theoretically returned to stock
History:
Got NC 1.2
Rooted w/ManualNooter 4.5.25. Everything seemed to go great. So...
Downloaded, backed up, and flashed CM7 in ROM Manager
Wouldn't boot...hung on n COLOR screen
Same results w/ Phirerom (CM7 based - doh)
Able to restore MN4.5.25 from CWM - BUT noticed "Error formatting /data!" during nandroid restore. Didn't seem to matter...restore successful
Get "Error formatting /data!" no matter what
Able to boot into CM7 from SD, but it has "problems". For instance, there are no "back" or "return" softkeys. So there is no way to navigate around any app! Only the hard "n" home key works
Reflashed stock 1.2
Seemed to work, began to ask me to reregister. BUT, it won't display the keyboard, so I'm stuck at the "Login with your existing B&N...." screen! Keyboard flashes up and then immediately disappears!
As an noob, it occurs to me that all my problems are related to my inability to format the /data partition (if it's even called a partition).
Can any of you awesome people help me? And, if I'm in the wrong forum, any directions would also help. Thanks.
Same error here
If anyone can help with this it would be much appreciated.
have you tried removing CWR then do the 8-boot reset?
No, every time I've done it, it boots into CWR. Maybe REMOVING it will help. lol. Sorry to be so inept. I can flash the 1.2 stock that will remove CWR. Is that the way to do it?
Worked like a charm
Removing CWR and 8-boot-interrupts did the trick. I'm now back to a fully stock NC 1.2.0. Ready to roll up my sleeves and re-brick!
This is the most amazing community. The closest thing I have to any technical knowledge is speaking a little Klingon. VERY little. But, I have learned more here by reading these threads for a couple hours...OK, several hours... than my wife has learned in a dozen trips to the apple store. I feel more empowered every day. You are all great. Can't thank you enough.
Goldie, I wasted a bunch of time on this last night. I'm guessing you have a new nook. If you do, slap cwr on your SD (3.0.2.8 or something) and look for the thread that tells you how to repartition your nook. Follow instructions to set it to the old way. After that run manualroot zip through cwr. Reboot to cwr and wipe data, system, cache. Finally install your rom of choice from your SD card through cwr. That's what I did to finally get it to work.
Thanks. I'll give this a try. As you probably guessed, I DO have a new NC, and while I was able to get it back to 100% stock, and easily reregister it, I had the same results. The ONLY way I can get CM7 running is off the SD card. So, I'll try the partitioning trick. Why do I get the feeling this is going to work? Unfortunately, I'm not on dev's time... I'm at work by 7:30am EDT, but in bed pretty early. I REALLY appreciate the response. Later this week I'll install SDK, and all my tools at home so I'll be able to stay up all night with you awesome folks.
still looking for the thread on re-partitioning. I found the thread on restoring, but I get the error every time I try to reformat the /data.
No luck. I can restore to stock 1.2, reregister, and MN 4.5.25, all easily. BUT, once I flash CM7 (or Phiremod 6.3, etc.) it hangs at the "n C O L O R" screen (C O L O R flashing at various speeds just to fool you into thinking it's actually going to work). Here's what I've noticed...after flashing CM7, the ADOBE screen no longer flashes up at boot. Once it fails to boot the Adobe software, it won't boot at all. So, for now, I guess I'm running CM off my SD unless anyone can suggest anything.
Goldie u have to repartition to get it working. Ill go look for the thread. Also maybe you should try out the cm7 mod over the phiremod Tom. I'm on phiremod now and the lag is killing me
Wow that was painful to find. Needs a sticky.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371
Edit: I take that back about the lag, set your cpu to 1200 in the ROM and change yourgovernator to interactive for an amazingly smooth experience
I've been going nuts trying to figure this out. I too ran into the "error format /data" message but I powered through it only to end up at at the Android logo--nothing. Out of frustration, I returned to CWR and wiped everything--like on my Evo (did not go through to mounts option). That seemed to go through /data but I don't know the difference between a wipe and a format (I'm looking...). Still got bootloops. I tried to return to stock but the 8 interrupts wouldn't work.
Pressing START and N worked though and that got through to CM7 and it's working great now but I'm afraid to do anything else because I still get the "error formatting /data" message.
I've heard horror stories (bricking beyond repair--if that's possible) of users repartitioning their drives though so... I hope there's another solution out there.
I love this community!!
Sys:
Thanks a million!! Everything perfect!! I just can't say enough about this awesome community, all the amazing devs.
heh you're more than welcome . i hope this helps anyone else that stumbles on your thread as well. Ive been having fun with my nook but i think its time to trade it out for something a little bigger. Maybe ill just wait till att gets its flavor of gs2 idk. So many choices out there!
thanks guys!
i just had the same problem and falshes all kinds
of zips until i found this post.now i've launched cm with status bar
really really thanks
this worked great for me too! i had a nookcolor bought in december and it had a messed up chargerand 6 really bright white spots that were really noticiable. went to b&n store and the guy just gave me a new one. it came with 1.2 and i had the cwm sd from the old one. so tried restoring my cm7 backup from the old one and error formatting data came up. flashed this zip, and im wondering, since these are too different nookcolors, should i restore the cm7 backup or flash it brand new. because i had a ton of stuff on the old one and i dont want to lose it. so can i ust do advanced restore and restore data, or can i restore the whole thing or just flash and slowly get my stuff back?
update cwm
ok not sure if you fixed it or not yet, but i had the same problem for awhile too until i found a post
your probably using cwm 3.0.0.28 just updated it to 3.2.0.1

i have tried 3.2.0.1 but get same error message
3.2.0.1 on the bootable card or already on the eMMC? It has to be on the bootable card.
Thanks
It works after getting my nook color around 2pm today and taking it home. I was working on this thing all day I tried several ways and this one worked!!! Having issues with wifi that's all

THATS IT! IVE HAD IT!! If I cant fix this error Im returning it

I posted this elsewhere with no replies yet
Im trying to install the newest CM7 on my NC and have spent the last 7 hours trying to diagnose how to get rid of the (android.process.media) unexpectedly stopped working, please try again error message. Nothing works. I've gone through the last few versions of CM7 and the gapps, I followed the instructions to the letter, it installs fine, wireless works,
When it loaded up, there was no google sign in screen, the process android.process.media error appears every few seconds or when i click on certain tabs, there is no backwards button enabled so i have to press the N to start over completely no matter where I go, the droid market works but again that error pops up and doesnt actually download anything, it just hangs on "downloading"
what the hell am i doing wrong and how can it mess up the same way on each version I have tried ? I went back a few versions and tried each one and each had their own crazy problems. What the hell, someone please help me so i dont have to return it
I don't know exactly what you are doing wrong, but I've found that following eyeballers tutorial of flashing cm7 to be pretty much foolproof
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
At any rate, make sure that you use a md5sum checker on the downloaded file. Maybe it got corrupted somehow. You never know.
Anyways, don't give up. The nook is awesome.
ive followed that guide, i dont know what else to do
how do i get flash video running?
Are you installing CM7 to a microSD card? I kept having this problem running CM7 from some a-data card, after putting a bunch of images on the nook. Eventually I installed CM7 to emmc and it's been perfect since.

Try again. Follow directions. If it still fails, try a different method. iirc there are a couple of ways to fix this issue.
btw: you might find more success if you approach this with a clear head; judging from your initial post, it might be a good time to take a break, have a snack, etc. good luck.

Having Real Problems.

I've been trying to make an SD card to run CM7 for my nephew using verygreen's instructions found here. When I try to boot the SD it runs up until I get a message telling me to find a missing file at nook.linuxhacker.ru. I've re-downloaded everything from the sites in the instructions several times and I keep getting the same message. What am I doing wrong?
Nook running 1.2.0
Sandisk 16GB class 4 card
Installer: h(t)tp://crimea.edu/~green/nook/generi...rd-v1.3.img.gz
Latest nightly build
Latest GAPPS file.
What am I doing Wrong? I can't post directly to the verygreen's thread so could someone alert someone about this? My sister bought my nephew the nook on my recommendation because I loved my rooted nook.
Yes, I've googled this and have yet to find an answer that works.
I assume you mean this thread. I've installed from it a dozen or more times with no problems.
If you're getting to the point of booting of SD and it's extracting files, the problem sounds like the CM image. Which are you downloading? Have you tried another? It could be gapps as well.
I can recommend the CM7.2 RC0 Mirage image you can find here on XDA.
Thanks a LOT. I'll try that in the AM. I appreciate any help.

Turns out this was really great advice. The problem was that, in Windows, when you download something more than once it gets a number in the name. I didn't see that and it screwed up the load. Me = Stupid Stupid Stupid. Got it working but now Dalingrin's overclock kernel is screwing things up and throwing it into a boot loop.

If you are installing a late nightly or MiRaGe then these include the Dalingrin overclock kernel as standard. The wording sort of suggests you might be trying to put a separate kernel zip on. If so then that might be causing incompatabilities.
That was exactly it. I just re-installed (updated to) the latest nightly and now everything is copacetic. Thank you everyone.
Good to hear it sounds OK now.
I'd also repeat the advice about seriously considering using the MiRaGe version rather than latest nightly (253). Nightlies froze back in mid November due to build machine problems and then the work on ICS. MiRaGe has fixes for a few issues that were still outstanding in that latest nightly like a spurious phone signal icon and some later kernel fixes for SOD issues that some people experienced.

This is weird...

im trying to put a recovery on my vibrant that i have and i have root access but when i try to intall rom manager so i can get the recovery i do not find it in the app store. i still have the OLD app store that has lots of green borders. Not sure, but here is the direct downloaded ROM Manager (free)

Yes that is the best way as a matter of fact. Btw what ROM are you wanting to flash?
i want to get any form of ICS on the vibrant, if yo could also help me with that i would greatly appreciate it.
lol i just saw your sig, you are very prepared in helping noobs xD
WOW i have been trying to install CWM since thursday and with your method i did it within a matter of seconds! Thanks!!
Again see link in my signature for ICS install instruction. I suggest you play with a 2.2 like Fishman 's Bionix and familiarize yourself with handling functions like flashing, restoring, ram tweaks, ....otherwise you might get into more than you can handle. ICS is a pretty advanced flash and could potentially brick your device if something goes wrong. Not as easy as just flashing update.zip, hence my guide. Also see warning at the top of the guide. Very important and the cause/solution is still WIP.
Also you are on your own for finding the needed files. Sorry but my dropbox acct has been getting flexed lately so i am giving it a break. Good luck and make sure you hit Xrider's thanks for posting in two separate threads to helps you with the .apk.
Going to bed. Good luck.
