..and....DONE ! :) - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

My OTG Connector (SD/USB) arrived this morning (from China...3.65 USD !!!).
It works great. The 7.7 is fully recognizing the SanDisk Cruzer 64Gb flash drive I bought specifically to work with this tab, as a "on the road" photo bank.
I am now declaring officially ended the "breaking-in", testing and set-up phase on my incredible SGT-P6800, with what, I fear, will be a permanent satisfaction grin stuck to my face...
Everything I planned for it is working exactly as I need it to
(Attached see a screen capture on how RawVision was able to locate and display the embedded jpegs contained in a couple of RAW CR2 files copied into the flash drive)
Remaining minor issues:
(1) DoggCatcher feeds into SD.
(2) Wi-Fi uneven performance, depending on network.
(3) Strange problem with Co-Pilot Live 8, whereas the screen appears messed up with a slant image in landscape orientation (being investigated by ALK).
Still to be tested:
(1) MoPhoto app update to version 1.6, when it comes out (to allow sending the from my camera, via Eye-Fi card RAWs into external storage)...no rush, as my camera is in the shop, anyway...
I am happy

I'm sorry but what are you using this for? And where did you get it from, thanks

I am wondering, when I boughy my 6810, shipped from france, inside the box, it came with the usb on the go adapter, is this supplied with all the 7.7 tabs or did I just get lucky? works like a charm, had to order the adapter for my GS2 though.

I think that's what he means: 30-pin to USB OTG adapter cable (?).

It replaces the Samsung EPL-1PLRBEGSTA.
Not only is it WAY cheaper but it is more practical, as a single piece doubles as a SD and USB OTG reader (...it has a tiny switch in it to transfer btw the SD and USB slots)

I think you were lucky...to my knowledge, 7.7s sold in Europe do not usually come with the OTG reader. It is a stand-alone accessory.

I got a question, i have a Nikon D3000 and ordered the adaptor and if i understand correctly i could view the pics taken with the camera using the adaptor by inserting the sd card into it. Also noticed you mentioned RawVision app, now i dont take pics in Raw just regular jpegs, will RawVision allow me to view my pics in full or just as thumbnails? Was reading reviews on the market and they kept mentioning thumbnails, just wanted to get your insight since you already use the app. Thanks.

RawVision is both convenient and inconvenient.
Convenient, because it will show you both the jpegs and the RAWs contained in the card (...actually, it will show the embedded Jpges contained in the RAW files, also, so it only be showing Jpegs, although it will still display the .NEF extension on those extracted ones).
Inconvenient, because it initially shows everything as thumbnails (...hence the continuous mention of thumbnails in the material you read...).
...but, you can long-press any thumbnails and, from the context menu, request it to be shown in full display.
Once one of the photos is displayed in full size you can then advance/move back through the photos, still in full display.
A bit strange, the implementation...
Hope this helps!

Cool thanks, doesnt seem that bad. Another question is regarding the eye-fi cards. Would i need the adaptor if i purchace an eye-fi card? And if i do get one would it be seemless wireless transfer from the eye-fi to the tab? (I assume i would need the tab to be in tether mode, or will it not work)
EDIT: just looked over the eye-fi website and found out i can transfers pics from camera to tab without wifi connection, so i actually did not need the connector, will keepit as a back up just in case.
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda premium

The whole purpose of the Eye-Fi is to not need the card to physically touch the tab (...including the OTG adapter/reader...) to transfer the photos.
You can transfer them, through a wireless connection, with 2 options:
1. Using the Eye-Fi Android app. This approach turns the card into a Wi-Fi hotspot and all you'll have to do then is connect the 7.7 to the card, as per Eye-Fi instructions, in much the same way as you would connect to any other Wi-Fi network.
2. For portable Wi-Fi hotspot enabled devices, like our excellent 7.7, we can use the awesome Kevin Tambascio app, MoPhoto, which works in an exact opposite approach.
The card is left to operate in is original intended mode (itself searching and connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network) and we just make sure the hotspot functionally is enabled in the tab, for the card to be able to "see" it.
I much rather prefer the second approach, as the Eye-Fi is (was?) much less "user-friendly".
(NOTE: I understand some US service providers de-activate the portable hotspot feature in their branded devices offering...If so, you might consider flashing an international ROM to regain the function, although I do not know how that would then affect is usage with the service provider. Alternatively, you might want to stick to the Eye-Fi app solution)
Love it!...but, things are in a pause, as far as I am concerned as:
1. My 1DMKIV is in the shop (in Germany! ) at the moment and I can't try the Eye-Fi card with this new tab.
2. I won't to be able to send the photos to the external SD as Kevin is still finishing that feature, to be included in the upcoming 1.6 version of MoPhoto.
Hope this helps!
XK

Thanks for the insight, this is why i love the xda forums, not only do we get help witn our devices but also learn about other technology and apps that can be used to take full advantage of our devices. I went ahead and ordered the eye-fi 4gb sd and might end up going with mophoto app as everyone seems to rave about it over the eye-fi app. Ill keep the adaptor ax a back up if the eye-fi sd ever fails. Cant wait to get it :-D

Just recieved the eye-fi 4g sd card and i tried it on my Nikon D3000 using both the eye-fi app and mophoto (market) and i have to say the mophoto app is the better one, faster transfer from my camera to the tab. Now i can get a better view of my pics on the tabs brilliant screen compared to the cameras small screen

Just received the OTG connector and it works as a charm, i have only used it to see pics from Nikon sd camera. Now having both the OTG connector and eye-fi sd card i can see all my pics when using my Nikon camera. Everyday i find new things take full advantage of my tab.

What I like about the OTG connector is that I can pop the TF card from my dashboard camera in, use the Samsung video editor to clip a video file of something interesting seen on the roadways, and then upload it to YouTube right there in the car. Pretty slick.

RawVision
Hi guys,
just to let you know that RawVision also supports Eye-Fi.
XDAKhan: the reason you need to make a long-press for accessing the contextual menu, is that the single press is used to select photos to make batch actions: jpeg extractions, import, delete, share with other apps ...
I know not everyone sees it at first glance, but hey, the dev is always available for some explanations.
But definitly, I need to make a help page

Any direct links on ebay to purchase this item?
The ones I see are usually for the other tablets by Samsung. Not sure of the compatibility.

Sure, there you go...

Forget SD Card Slots, Ports, and Adapters! Its all about wireless drives!

I was back at Best Buy today to Lon at accessories for my Tab10.1. I was considering the USB host adapter, but then the helpful employee showed me this little gem. It is a mobile drive with battery and wifi wrapped in with a light 500gb drive. Although a bit pricy for a 500gb drive, it comes with wall and car chargers as well as built in wifi mini router. Up to 3 devices can connect and use at once.
When you consider a 32gb SD card is $100, this would seem to be worth the leap. No more eject and insert to share data, or sync between computer and mobile. Just push from computer to drive, and then the mobile device uses.
The only downside I can see is stream music via wifi means no multi tasking to the internet. Maybe that has been taken care of but to me this seems to be much better than cards and ports. It certainly means larger mobile storage!

Some of the class 10 ones are around 100 or close to just depends on what brand they look at.

Any more than that, I can't help you as I don't have the dslr controller app, Nexus 7, or the cables.

This apparently is not accurate. There is a Mic, but the right speaker/mic combination needs to be used and a lot of apps don't apparently work while a few do.
Chances are, there will need to be some updates on this, most likely on the app side to get this to work properly. One would think that the credit card swipe devices would test it and tweak their apps to work. Think that using a smart phone might be a better choice since it has 3G/4G data and the Nexus 7 doesn't and would require a network connection to transmit the data though. Dont need a lot of size to do a credit card transaction.
So not to dis on the Nexus 7 at all but as a Photographer myself I would think you'd be better off with one of the Transformers for something like this. I just have a TF101 but its got a nice big screen and probably more than enough battery power with the keyboard dock for you to play with for a full day. Something like the higher resolution models out now would be even better.
The way I shoot weddings or even in the studio, it would be insanely cumbersome to move the subject, adjust the tripod and go to the tablet to take the pictures. I would end up using it mostly for previews. If you just want previews, since you have a camera with an SD slot, I'm pretty sure you're life would be MUCH easier just using a Eye-Fi card that syncs with the Nexus / Tablet by dropping JPG's into the gallery for you as you shoot (keeping the RAW's on the actual card assuming you shoot RAW).
The other thing to keep in mind with the Nexus 7 in your grand scheme of things is it is a really bad choice for displaying your portfolio due to the lack of on board storage and screen size. On a 10 inch table a landscape image looks small but barely passable in portrait and visa versa, on a 7 inch I wouldn't even consider it passable and would need to format portrait or landscape portfolios = more work for me!
Last but not least, just use your phone for CC transactions, it's always with you and always has a network connection and stuff like Square should just work without having to Jerry Rig anything.
Not trying to change your mind on anything, just some insight form a like minded photographer. Honestly with the exception of the Eye-Fi for previews by the time you mash together a workable solution you'll probably hate having to set everything up and find yourself working around a new set of self imposed limitations rather then doing what photographers like to do, taking good pictures.

Getting lrg hard drive support on Note 10.1

I contacted Samsung on Twitter about getting TB or lrg storage support on our device, stating Surface Pro does and that some work done on this tablet requires direct and larger storage capacity. They were open and receptive to exploring the option of making that happen. So if anyone else wants to make the request to them go right ahead. Can't hurt right and it may happen faster. I described my working process using Note for illustration. I like the product.

This is fine for light usage, however I use Note 10 as a production device. I need to cut out the middle device and plug directly in I am producing that much work. There is a reason why Microsoft included the capability with Surface Pro some people actually use tablets to produce work. I will get this although but if Samsung comes through I'm happy with the ability to plug in a TB plus HD even better.

I use my note for multiple productivity tools when I don't want to tote my laptop, incuding working on large word documents. I will be able to plug external hard drives upto 2T as well as flash drives and SD cards into the RavPower WIFI unit and acess the data wirelessly. Although they're expensive, Kingston's WiDrives offer wireless access to upto 128 GB of data without the need for a power cord (on board battery power is rated for 4 hours).

Once I get the RavPower unit and have had a chance to use it, I'll post a review in the accessories section. The note's a more than adequate substitute for my laptop on many occassions so l decided the RavPower purchase along with a better BT keyboard and mouse was warranted. I find myself using Kingsoft Office quite a bit.
Large drive support would be very nice indeed. I too use my GN for work, and in fact have moved exclusively to using it while out of the office. I don't find myself wanting for my laptop except in a few situations. Though i find a 64GB SD card handles my documents just fine since i am not working with super large files basically financial forcasting excel spreadsheets large word docs etc.
Just curious what types of files you all are working with that require that much space? Curious as maybe i am missing the boat on a usage for my Tablet.

I work on legal briefs and documents as well as detailed analyses of proposed legislation and regulations. I'm most looking forward to getting a new BT with standard keyboard layout.

Didn't get the 32GB Model? This is better!

If you're like me, you decided that the 32GB model was too much for so small extra storage. I decided to go this route instead.
First, you pick up one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151083670634
Then you get one of these or use one you have laying around from a previous phone (I have several):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007XZM6VG
Then you root and install "StickMount" from the market for free. You end up with a 48GB or larger model. It's also great for accessing photos I've saved on my Galaxy Note 2 (saved to SD) and viewing them on the bigger screen.
I do my Titanium and Nandroid backups to this device and then I'm not carrying them around on the device all the time taking up space. Yes, this even works with TWRP Recovery, as you go to the "Mount" menu and set it to look to your OTG device instead of onboard storage.
If I need to load up some movies for a trip, I put them on the SD and pop them in when I want to watch. Really works great.
I still like having the extra internal storage. I do plan on storing Nandroid and Titanium Backups backups on a flash drive using this method.

Games, ROMs, and movies are what kill me. I like to store a few different ROMs, I have a bunch of large games (Grand Theft Auto, Bard's Tale), and I usually keep about 3-5 movies until I watch them.
At only 40 bucks difference in price, not getting the 32 seems silly.
Just so others know there are other flavors of usb otg devices out there. Just get the otg cable and connect an external drive or any usb stick. Or mouse/keyboard.
I got the 16gb model because they were out of the 32s where I picked up mine. Still thinking if I should go back and get the 32 but may give the cloud/lan a try and see how I do. I use tasker and a couple programs to auto upload files when I'm home, so really the only thing on my storage is apps. Media is all pretty easy to stream where ever I use a tablet.
I would rather have more internal storage then external storage. The fragile micro USB port is the weak point of the tablet so I want to use that as little as possible. Besides using it for fastboot and ADB while in recovery, I do everything else wirelessly including wireless charging, ADB over Wifi and transfer over WiFi. It is much more convenient to torrent straight onto the tablet then transferring from the PC via external storage or be dependent on the OTG adapter always plugged in for downloading onto. A single TV episode is 1 - 1.3 GB and a movie is 2 - 5GB so the ~11.5 GB of useable internal storage is really not enough.
I just use my router+external hard drive as an ftp server as backup. Also use it as a dlna server. No need to store anything locally. As long as I'm on my lan...

I was going to point that out too.
In case anyone is curious, there is a video describing the product here:

I got the 16gb model because they were out of the 32s where I picked up mine. Still thinking if I should go back and get the 32 but may give the cloud/lan a try and see how I do.

Exactly my situation... amazon was sold out on the 32. I actually think it is a good exercise to try using the smaller version with cloud services. I have plenty of Dropbox storage and have Dropsync Pro purchased. Also have box.com and Asus' storage solution. Must have 200gb total! File Expert cloud services works great and is quite fun.
This approach is just right for me. Not for everybody, of course.

Roms kill me. Start crack flashing and next thing you know you're out of storage. I also like games and when playing BardsTale on my 16gb, I hit the wall. My 16gb got stolen the same day OfficeDepot started leaking the 32gbs early. I literally came home with 16gb, read XDA on PC and immediately left again.
OTG is handy but I wouldn't want to be reliant on it. I use it mostly for grabbing files off USB disks.

By the end of August they will be available, I've one ordered.
32GB is the best for me. Road trips and shorter car trips, I don't have access to cloud services, and I don't trust my young'uns to not break the micro USB connector with a cable and USB drive dangling from it. It's nice to have it locally and not be at the mercy of Internet speeds wherever I happen to be. Is there anything more annoying than stuttering youtube?
Not recommanding
TF card have very slow random I/O, it's better not to use TF card.
Low random I/O means slow game loading.
And don't think class 10 TF cards would be better at random I/O than class 2 ones because they are not.
Use small USB flash instead would be better, if possible.:cyclops:
I bought a 16 GB then I used the office max coupon and got the 32 GB f bout $15 cheaper then I paid for the 16

Yeah, yeah. Goody for you. The point is if you didn't get the 32gb, this is a solution that works. Not for all who need the 32, but they wouldn't make a 16 if it wasn't good enough for many (like me).

I like that one, too. However, mine was cheap and the fact that the other one isn't available seems to weigh pretty heavily toward the one I selected, right?

REVIEW: Fire 7 as a Photographers Companion

I am a photojournalist by trade and my sole purpose with the Fire 7 was to use it as a companion when working away from home. I have wrote a small review on my online magazine:

Very good review, I'm a lazy reader a and I still finished most of it, you didn't mentioned you ScreenOn Time? Did you? I would like to know what tour SOT is with your usage pattern, and just one thing, I would seriously try to get a sd reader to microusb otg, they exist, this would allow you to use sd cards when needed and get a little more speed, I suspect microsd is always slower than full size sds.

Thank you glad you liked the review - I completely forgot about the screen on time I'll will add it to the article when I get the chance. I prefer the dedicated canon camera cables via OTG USB when connecting as opposed to using external card readers. When working away it is a lot easier to lose the card readers as they are smaller than the cables themselves and also easier to find on my bag. Just a personal preference

I had no idea your cameras had a way to directly connect OTG, I kept thinking you were removing microsd cards and putting them inside the Fire, so you actual solution is a million times better than my sugestion.
Yeah the review is very good, I mean for $50 the tablet is the best bang for the buck as we say in the US..
