Another (LPY-related ?) crash - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

What a scare.
This morning when I took my Note, apps, including system apps, kept force closing.
I had installed LPY, through Mobile Odin, the moment it was available, and before I could take notice of its i/o bug, I had already wiped dalvik and cache, restored a gingerbread nandroid backup, and reinstalled LPY without bricking (luckily). Thereafter, LPY had been running more or less graciously, even if with the deep sleep problem which the turning off in offline mode and pulling out battery trick managed to cure only for few hours each time.
Well so I was looking at my apps and services crashing, and I turned my Note off. I also pulled battery out, then turned on again.
Result: stuck in first logo, N-7000.
Off and on again: starts in download mode.
Then I think: the OS must be kaputt... But I have my latest nandroid backup in gingerbread, made immediately before flashing LPY. Flashing it is a risk since I'm with the faulty LPY kernel and CWM. But I am far from any Odin installation, I have no computer with Samsung Kies and drivers, and the first time I was lucky... Why not again?
So this time I boot in CWM recovery and start restore. Restore stops saying "error on /system".
I think "good, so I have destroyed my /system partition, so next time I turn off and on I get a superbrick, fine!". I have nothing to lose now, so try again turning off and rebooting in recovery.
In recovery I try again restoring my nandroid. And this time it completes the restore process (which subjectively lasted for hours, believe me).
Reboot in gingerbread. Get gingerbread. Bootlooping three or four times, then stable.
I'm writing this with my Note with LC1 and Cfroot, and I'm a happy guy.
But what a scare.

You probably need to install abyss4.2 kernel, flash it thru cwm, reboot in recovery then only you can do your nandroid, as i know, this is the safest way to do nandroid from ICS back to GB

lasted for hours??
i think patience is also a part of playing with LPY...
but for me, LPY is a NO-GO, so i flashed GB nonwipe on PC Odin and wiped on stock recovery..

Maybe I wasn't clear... It's A-OK now, even after all those wipes under LPY. So thanks for your advice, I might need in the future, but luckily not now.

I also had error on /system/ used redpill to restore a fresh ICS backup, although I am unable to remount /system with rw now, but that could be if the commands have changed for ICS or kernel 3.0
It does freak you out when you see error on /system/

Brick (I guess)

I just bricked my device I guess.
First off flashed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162302
TouchWiz UX for 10.1
- Cleared all (factory reset)
Which was working nicely, but then I needed some extra kernel modules, so I installed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175299
3.1 Galaxy Tab Wifi OC1.6
- Cleared all (factory reset)
It booted at first, but then rebooted and eventually went to black screen. Now powering up won't work.
So yes it really won't come to life out of it's own.
-------------
My first step: Hang it to a PC
Well it recognized the tab, and was asking for the APX driver, which I found over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11901016&postcount=75
Which installed correctly, and is recognizing my device (for now).
Who can help me further (it is possible to backup and restore using nvflash)
-- Update 0x4 error...
NVFlash seems to be a dead end. You can't use it without sbk, which we don't have. Any more suggestions?
Use Odin to flash CWM recovery (if you haven't already), then reinstall a ROM using Clockwork Mod.

Could be "sleep of death" there are other threads on here about it. There are various ideas about waking it up, but just letting the battery discharge and then charging it worked for my (unmodded) tab. Admittedly that is a little tricky when you can't power it on in the first place!

Been there, done that... I've flashed all through CWM recovery, always made a backup, but it doesn't go through the bootloader anymore, so I can't access the recovery, nor the download mode (for Odin flashing).
The only thing I can access at the moment is that stupid NVFlash, and since my device is I/O locked, I can't flash anything.

I will check on this. It's the only way to fully reset my device. Since it is I/O locked, it can't have harmed my bootloader or CWM recovery.
I made sure before flashing that the MD5 checksum was right (which it was). The only thing it flashed was a kernel. Well I will drain my battery and check if it is possible to boot it up after that. Else I buy a new one
Exact same thing happened to me.. ran poitee kernel over OTA update.. killed everything but nvflash + all black screen.
Cannot get it to flash w/ bootloader.. Have 2 days to RMA and I really don't want my data out there in the event this thing comes back up after the battery dies.
PS- My unit was bootloader unlocked and rooted.

Random reboots/shutdowns with Aura and Atrix?

I've re-installed Atrix 4 times on my phone, each time doing a factory reset, clearing cache, and Dalvik cache. I've had random reboots/shutdowns on every install of Alien Build #4 and Aura 1.1.3.8. One running Atrix stock kernal, 2 using faux's kernal 0.1.6 (one non-oc, one oc), and one using faux's OC 0.1.7. Now I'm running Aura 1.1.3 Build #8 Deblurred. All with random reboots and shutdowns.
I've noticed I never get a random reboot while I'm charging, only while on battery. I've calibrated my battery several times so it's not lack of juice. Sometimes it just reboots, other times it shuts down and doesn't reboot so I have to turn on the phone, though most of the time the screen won't turn on and the phone won't shut off so I have to take out the battery to turn on the phone. I've tried uninstalling SetCPU, disabling profiles, and setting the max clock to 1000mhz. None of this helped.
On the last Alien install (now I'm running Aura) I was having even more problems but they only happened on that install:
1. I got an error when trying to boot in red: "Unrecoverable Bootloader error (0x00000004)" though I was able to turn the phone off and reboot normally.
2. I got an error about 5 times in a row while trying to boot, I forgot the exact text but something along the lines of "Unable to load radio module (0)". I had to take out the battery and try about 5 times till it would boot properly.
3. After this, I was unable to boot into Recovery through the volume buttons, I'd press down till I got the Android Recovery, then press up and it'd hang there. It works now for some reason.
I installed Alien right when I got my phone so I'm unsure if random reboots happen stock. Also my phone gets really warm when I'm using it, I look in SetCPU and the CPU temp is anywhere from 42 to 57 C. Does anyone else's phone get this hot?
I would just take it back to Best Buy and get a new one cause I have a protection plan with them, but my phone is unlocked which voids the warranty.
Does anyone know what could be causing all of these issues and how to fix them?
Thanks for the help, XDA is great!
Im by no means a expert...but I'm currently running AURA 1.1.3#8 debloat and all is well on my phone....I would recommend performing a Ti backup on ur aps and doing a factory reset to see if the problem persists....if it does I would take it back...if not reinstall through CWM wiping devalk cache then a full data wipe then install AURA and reboot all in CWM ....btw I'm running Rom Racers CWM also. Hope you can get it figured out!

I would have just taken it in but my phone is unlocked, rooted, and using Romracers CWM so I doubt Best But will accept it. I've tried all of this. I'm going to try CM7 Beta2, if the problem still persists I don't know what to do cause Best Buy won't accept it when they see the Unlocked at the top of the bootloader. It works fine when it's charging but so far no matter what I've tried I always got reboots. Does your phone get hot? Can you check what temps you get in SetCPU? Thanks for the suggestions btw.
My phone has never gotten over 33*....Try going back to stock gingerbread and see if the problems persist there and if not then u can proceed forward.....that way you can rule out if the problem is the phone or a certain build and a bug you have picked up
Sorry I meant 39* on phone temp
I went into my settings>widow and turned it off then rebooted, seemed to work, I also would get random reboots after a fresh install. Like at least 20x. But try that. Worked for me.

33? Wow, my phone never goes below 42C, it's usually around 49-50C. How do you return to stock gingerbread like the phone came with? All I've found was flashing the SBF through RDA, is there any way to do it with CWM so it's safer? Sorry for the noobiness, I'm new to the Atrix, is there a way to completely restore the phone to stock (stock gingerbread, locked bootloader, no CWM)?
Edit: I just flashed CM7 pre-beta 2, going to see how this works, hopefully it fixes my problems.
performing a data wipe/factory reset in CWM should put you completely back to stock. It wont matter that you have a UL bootloader or rooted.

Are you doing a factory data/reset wipe cache and wipe dalvik step after you install a new rom? Do the same wipe steps before and after rom flash. If you are doing this then it sounds like a hardware problem or your bl got thrashed unlocking it.

It will only reset to the current rom defaults. If you have cm7 or alien flashed, It will revert back cm7 or alien. Doesn't effect root or bootloader. If the rom is pre rooted it stays rooted even after a full wipe.

That sounds highly possible as it happens with each install and I am doing a factory reset, cache wipe, and dalvik cache wipe with each install. If ran the unlocking script again would it erase the bootloader and re-install it to fix that?
Edit: I just got another "Unrecoverable Bootloader error (0x00000004)" error, I'm going to re-run the script.

No don't. The script doesn't update the boitloader I don't think. Did you use the ota to get gingerbread?
If the bl is fubared and your not on the legit ota you can rsd to 1.83 and start over. If you are on the ota update then all you can use is cwm(safely)

My phone came shipped with 2.3.4 Gingerbread, I never used the OTA update. I re-ran the script and got another random reboot.
Edit: I'm flashing the official 2.3.4 SBF from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944
I'll let you all know how things went.
From what I understand ...once u are on 2.3.4 if u try to flashback to. 83 it will hard brick you...definitely flash back to stock gingerbread 2.3.4 and hopefully that will solve your problems ....good luck
I installed Aura 1.1.3 Debloat #7 two days ago and my phone rebooted by itself today. I had it in my pocket, then I took it out and it was loading. I thought I might have pushed something when moving, but maybe it is related to the rom.
Okay, I flashed 2.3.4 with pudding boot loader unlocked and Romracer CWM Recovery. I'm going to install Alien and faux's kernal, hope flashing 2.3.4 fixed this and it's not a hardware issue.
Did you experience any problems while you were on 2.3.4 or did you flash straight to alien afterwards ...hope you get your problems figured out! Make a backup of the 2.3.4 flash also so if you do experience any problems you can always flash back

I flashed straight to Alien when I got the phone so I'm not sure it stock Gingerbread had problems. I just flashed 2.3.4 with pudding unlocked bootloader, Romracer's CWM, and finished installing Atrix Build 4 and faux's kernal 0.1.7. I'm going to take the phone off the charger (I only get reboots and shutdowns while on battery), and start installing my apps, restoring contacts, messages, and see if I have any problems. I'm not going to install SetCPU and mess with profiles and undervolting till I know I'm good.
I'll report how it's going tomorrow morning (usually by that time I get at least 5 to 10 random reboots/shutdowns). If this doesn't fix it then I'm going to flash the stock 2.3.4 SBF so they don't know I messed around with the device and take it back to Best Buy to get a replacement.

Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Recovery Post Mortem

A story you might find some useful morsels in . If you are impatient, yes, a happy ending.
Monday night I opened the case on my tablet and it was booting. I figured that was strange and after a few minutes realized it was just stuck booting. So I rebooted it. Came up... and then suddenly during the everything loading up phase, rebooted. This repeated several more times.
Uh oh. Working quickly between boots I unset the default on Apex launcher (since it updates frequently) and turned off the live wallpaper. I also shut off Wifi. No effect.
Next stop recovery. Cleared caches, etc. Nope. I had a fairly recent backup but took another one and it worked (whew). Decided that I would do a data wipe from recovery. Uh oh. Any attempt to format /data causes a crash.
I go to Odin to see if I can repartition flash. I can't find a PIT file for the P5113 but did find one for a 16K 7 inch model. Odin repartitioned it but still no joy. Wiping data causes a reboot. So does trying to restore a backup to /data.
Next stop Kies. You can tell it to reload firmware but you need your serial number which is written on the back of your tab (yes it is, it is about the height of a carbon atom). However, it asks you to enter "recovery" mode by pressing buttons that aren't on the tablet. I tried Odin mode but it couldn't connect. Using CWM recovery didn't work either.
So I decided I needed stock recovery. I could not find a P5113 stock recovery that wasn't bundled with an entire update package. So I unpacked an update package to get recovery.img. Flash_image didn't work (seems like it never works on this tablet, and now that I think about it, I think I wrote a thread on how to do it with dd that I forgot about last night! Duh: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31293383&postcount=32). Instead, I repacked just recovery.img with tar. Odin was able to flash this and I was back in the ugly stock recovery.
I never did try Kies though because I asked the stock recovery to reformat /data and it worked! Back to Odin to reflash CWM and then the backup I made Monday night rolled back on and I was back in business.
Restore my screen saver, redefault (is that a word?) Apex, and turn Wifi back on. Oh yeah, and run Triangle Away
So I'm not sure what to make of all this. Open questions:
1) Did I need to repartition? What's the right PIT file to use? I sure wish Odin could dump a clean image, but if it can, I don't know how.
2) What mode does Kies want? This could have been a VirtualBox problem but I got it to work before I got Kies installed on my wife's real Windows box (man Kies is slow!).
3) Why could stock recovery reformat /data but CWM could not?
4) Would it have been sufficient to just reflash the stock recovery, do the data wipe? I suspect so, but don't know.
Anyway.... things are back to normal. Love the tab, but sure wish these big companies wouldn't assume we don't know how to fix our own stuff and muck things up with "simplified" tools. By the way, this is the "touch" CWM that seemed to fail to fix /data. I did not try the normal one.

Here we go again. Same problem but I'm not even getting into the boot. Does anyone know how to actually reformat and rescan flash for bad blocks? I have a feeling I have a bad flash block that is doing something evil.
Sigh.
Tried a different approach this time.
Booted to recovery and did an fsck on /data since it seemed to have the problem.
It did a lot of clean up and now I'm back up. Not sure what got damaged if anything though. Time will tell.
Good to hear that it is a happy ending, bro!

[Q] Wiping didn't work, messed up restore - now can't boot into TWRP

First time flashing CM, and I may have messed up.
I rooted, installed TWRP, everything went perfect. I made a backup, and then tried to do a factory wipe. The wipe ended with the messages "unable to mount /system", "... /cache" and another one. I still tried to flash, and it just immediately got stuck, nothing happened. I rebooted, and everything worked fine. It was the Samsung stock image and all my apps were still there. I'm assuming it just didn't wipe at all.
I then went full retard mode, and tried to do a restore. I wanted to be sure my phone wouldn't fail on me in the recent future because some random stuff may have been partially wiped or something. Feel free to tell me I have the IQ of a chimp.
This completely messed things up, as it just got stuck at "Restoring System...". Eventually I restarted it with the power button. Now it can't boot normally, it can't boot into recovery mode, which just leaves download mode.
Any way I can fix this and subsequently install CM properly? I'm using TWRP 2.6.3.0. I've been told it's recommended to use 2.5, as the other version may have some issues (including not being able to recognize partitions). Only download mode still seems to work, so maybe there's a way to flash my phone back into the living world?
Versions:
Team Win Recovery Project 2.6.3.0
CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (RC2 jfltexx)
Thanks!
No idea really but maybe try to flash default rom/recovery etc with odin?
I've had this problem. Seeing as you only have download mode you have to flash a stock Rom and start again. Recoveries for our phone are still I development. Use official CMW to install CM, using links in Op.

I got the Samsung stock ROM of july, flashed it using download mode, and everything was back! I then rooted it again, and installed CMW (see versions below). I went into recovery, and tried to do a backup. It told me it failed: "Error while making a backup image of /data!". I then wondered if it may have been due to a lack of storage (which could very well be, as that was the issue before and the old backup by Teamwin was probably still on it somewhere), so I rebooted my phone. That's when it just failed and kept showing the Samsung logo at boot. I tried flashing my ROM again, again the logo. Then I did a factory reset using the regular recovery (cache and data reset), which fixed it. Now all my apps and data are gone, but that's no problem.
I'm back at the unrooted Samsung stock image now. Any ideas what I did wrong? These were the versions I used:
CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505
i9505-cwm-recovery-6.0.3.2(0611)
Odin3 v3.07
I did nothing more than root, install CMW, try a backup and then it all went to ****. I'm surprised a backup can even do that.
Mmm I'm not too familiar with the internal workings of backups. Perhaps something was corrupted during flashing? Glad to hear that you have got your phone working again. There is an updated version of CMW somewhere in the original development thread.

i've had the exact same issue.
I did go back to stock firmware and recovery, rerooted(chainfire) and installed the latest CWM 6.0.3.6.
Then, i did download Jamals Google play 4.3 rom, placed it on my SDcard and did follow the instructions. Works like a charm, and i've got noe clue what happened to my phone. however, it works now.

I tried CMW 6.0.3.6 and the Google Play 4.3 ROM as you said, and it works perfectly! I didn't try a backup this time, as it didn't exactly have anything to back up anymore.
Finally my precious vanilla Android again, I missed it since I switched from my Galaxy Nexus to my S4. Thanks a lot guys!
Edit: I do seem to be having one issue. Quite frequently after it's booted, and I enter the SIM pin, the message "Unlocking SIM card..." stays there indefinitely. I can use the phone but the message covers everything up. This doesn't always happen, but quite often. I've read some ROMs can't handle SIM lock, like CM. This is a Google Play edition, however. Is it normal that this doesn't work?
I can seem to fix it by holding the power button, and choosing "Unlock SIM" from the menu. I guess it's not that bad as I don't often reboot my phone.

Need help, please!

Hi all,
Recently I've had a few troubles with flashing ROMS, to the point where I cant start my phone without it rebooting. I've been using CWM PhilZ 6.0.4.4, GT-I9505 and I did a full wipe everytime.
Originally I was on Omega 10 and decided to try out a new ROM (phone kept dying at 15% for some reason as well). Flashed PACman ROMs latest nightly and had some troubles getting past the set up as it froze every time, and when I tried rebooting it, it would simply not start. It was suggested to upgrade my recovery, so I did so from PhilZ CWM 3.0.3.3 to 3.0.4.4. Tried it again and it worked fine, but due to my own clumsiness I accidentally restored system data from Omega to PACman. Obviously it wouldn't start properly after that, reflashed again and was very careful to only restore apps (restored SMS as well as .xml). Everything was fine except a few bugs here and there, but then I rebooted it and it just wouldn't start.
After that I tried cyanogenmod, as I thought it would be more stable. Pretty much same thing happened, less bugs but when I tried rebooting it just wouldn't start.
Given up by this point, I tried reflashing Omega v10. It worked perfectly for a few hours, flashed the latest 3minit framework and ausdim kernel. The next day, my phone suddenly died at 42% and when I try to start it up it gets stuck at the Omega logo. Went into recovery, tried doing full wipe again and cant get past setup without it turning off. Furthermore, when I try to reflash, it just unpacks the zip but turns off randomly.
I'm not quite sure what to do next, I'm thinking it's my recovery not doing wipes properly since when I try to wipe dalvik it says "path not found", and if I try to reboot with recovery it says "root may have been lost, would you like to root?"
Sorry for the whole wall of text, just thought all the information would be better than not enough! If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated as I cant even access my phone currently

Hi all,
Recently I've had a few troubles with flashing ROMS, to the point where I cant start my phone without it rebooting. I've been using CWM PhilZ 6.0.4.4, GT-I9505 and I did a full wipe everytime.

Seems to me that you are having battery issues. You might need to get a replacement. If that doesn't work you could try flashing a pre-knox ROM though ODIN 3.04. This would mean starting from scratch, but it could be your solution.
Quick question. Are you downloading the ROMs with your phone or downloading them with your computer then moving them to your phone via usb? because it might be your pc's/usb fault.
I also think there's a problem with your battery, it might need to be replaced.

Thanks for the quick reply! Would the battery explain why my ROMS wouldn't start though? Such as how Omega got stuck at the logo. I will try using my friend's battery, or just keeping the phone on charge whilst doing it and see how that works.
Im sending them through Usb currently, is there any other way to get it on my phone as I can't turn it on to send it over wifi :/

Whenever you flash stock tar through Odin, the phone will restart by itself and wipe cache. After it does this, you should factory wipe and no more bootloop, or soft bricks. I would start from scratch if i were you. If you have working custom recovery installed., I would go in and do a format, not a wipe, but format the sdcard and restart into download mode and flash stock tar, cf auto root, and then flash a custom recovery. And then decide what rom to flash.

Thank you for the reply i just got home so I'll try this soon, would it be risky though since my battery and/or cable may be damaged, meaning if it turns off during flashing stock, I'll get a hard brick?
Update: just reflashed Omega whilst it was on a charger and it actually worked.
Does this suggest that the battery is damaged?
Sounds to me like a definite battery problem.
Samsung recalled batteries with a serial number starting with BD. have a look and check your battery mate.
Also check it's not swollen

I just checked my battery, it does start with BD, and it does appear to be somewhat swollen.. I haven't noticed it before :l Could I just return it to Samsung for a replacement, without going back to stock ROM? I'm currently in Australia, haven't really seen a Samsung support center anywhere nearby.
Update: got my hands on a new battery, everything seems to be working great now. Flashed paranoid android, no reboots or any other problems.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped
