My battery has been great for the majority of the life of my XPLay until recently.
Installed better battery stats and found that the office software that comes pre-installed with the device (and has been recently updated) was preventing my phone from sleeping. Uninstalled it using titanium backup and now my battery is back to its best with the phone sleeping when it should.
In short if your battery life is not good on stock rom find out which apps are misbehaving and keeping the phone from entering deep sleep as they will probably be causing excessive battery drain. The phone should use very little battery whilst asleep.
Does keeping auto-brightness on help with the battery ?

depends on the level of brightness you use when not using auto-brightness. SO it's abit of a how long is a piece of string question. If you whack up the brightness to 100% it will use more battery than auto-brightness, if you use minimum settings all the time it will use less. The piece of string is as long as you cut it....

Too many factors determining battery life like leaving your 3g on, gps, etc,.or apps constanly updating through your network, like background sync and stuff. Even low signal drains battery

Have you been running the same setup, and the problem randomly popped up? Or is it just after flashing your main setup? Also, a lot of apps/settings will drain your battery. First step is to wipe your battery stats, etc. and then check your apps and settings.
I have changed nothing, but going to the ed04 radio. Ed01 was only getting me 5 hours max on a full battery. I have checked everything else.

Use spare parts from the market and also check battery use in about phone under settings. Best way to fix your problem is knowing whats causing it, recalibrating battery helps a lot too. Oh almost forgot , download cpu spy from market,best way to see if your phone is sleeping properly,it should be in deep sleep almost the whole time when phone is not in use.
I know people are always complaining about battery performance, or see stories of how someones phone will go from 100-40 in an hour and half to two hours. I think I've found a solution (notice how I said I THINK). I've seen random battery fluctuations on my device for months now, some days it lasts longer than others (obviously data off, wifi off, and all that good stuff) but the battery life would still be eaten away like crazy. Here's what I noticed a few days ago: I went to sleep and when I woke up the next day my battery life had dropped 20 percent overnight, and everything that sucks battery was off. It confused me because that doesn't happen unless I leave data or wifi on. So I looked through the phone and I turned off "Standalone GPS services" one night and went to bed again. The next morning, the phone battery had only dropped 2 percent!
tl;dr turn off Standalone GPS under Location and security settings. IT may help your phones battery life significantly

a good tip is
use wifi instead of data when a wifi network is available but keep wifi off when not in use.
too many people either leave wifi on all the time which wastes alot of battery or never use wifi as there confused and always use data connections even when at home (major battery killer)
What happens with my battery is that if I leave the phone on standby overnight it'll gain about 10% and that's not even in airplane mode.
But as usual my battery does drain quite a lot when playing games using wifi and all that. Using EDGE drains more than using wifi.
I always charge my phone every night so would turning off the gps help much during the day?

Each has its own pro's and cons. Here is a list:
Lithium ion:
-The lightest of all metals
-The greatest electrochemical potential
-The largest energy density for weight.
-The load characteristics are reasonably good in terms of discharge.
-The high cell voltage of 3.6 volts allows battery pack designs with only one cell versus three.
-It is is a low maintenance battery.
-No memory and no scheduled cycling is required to prolong the battery's life.
-Lithium-ion cells cause little harm when disposed.
-It is fragile and requires a protection circuit to maintain safe operation.
-Cell temperature is monitored to prevent temperature extremes.
-Capacity deterioration is noticeable after one year (whether the battery is in use or not).
Lithium Polymer:
-Lithium polymer chemistry differentiates itself from Lithium Ion in the type of electrolyte used (a plastic-like film that does not conduct electricity but allows ion exchange - electrically charged atoms or groups of atoms).
-The polymer electrolyte replaces the traditional porous separator, which is soaked with electrolyte.

You could try out apps like juice defender. It disables your data connection and enables it every 30 minutes for example, to update whatsapp etc. When I am at home, I use our WiFi network. My play has the best battery life of all my friends phones and I'm a heavy user, playing a lot of games and using the internet too.

Juice defender is a great app, but unfortunately it was interfering with my Words With Friends notifications too frequently lol.
For some reason, I'm kinda adamant that juice defender doesn't really help but I've done no test to prove that. I just kinda feel that way.

It really does! It turns on my data every 30 minutes and I really got an improvement of my batterylife. Why would I need data, when listening to music for example? Just try it out

You need to try the ultimate version. You can select what happens on specific apps. So apps that dont use the internet, the data will be disabled whilst playing them
Also, you can set it to automatically turn data on/off depending on your location so you connect to wifi at home ect
I find it very useful

I'm running stock and I'm using mkernel. What's the operating system doing when my device is idle to consume all that battery life?

No, and it's not recommended for this kernel. You probably have some application using the CPU. And keep in mind, that's over 3.5 days, so it's not too be worried about.

Not really sure what you are looking for.
Your tablet is configured differently (read: installed apps & their settings, never mind ROM & kernel differences) than the next person's, and those configuration changes alter the activity on the device and therefore the amount of power it consumes vs time. If what you observe is unacceptable to you, you need to drill down into the details to try and optimize things. But it really is impossible for anybody to guess (from a completely blind position on the other side of the internet) what might be the cause; if that is indeed anomalous consumption compared to some benchmark (pure stock, no market apps installed & a dormant gmail account?), the cause could be due to an unlimited number of different causes.
Perhaps you want to use that app BetterBatteryStats ($2.89) to find out about wake lock usage.
FWIW, my rooted stock 4.2.2 N7 grouper tab seems to discharge about 4% "overnight". Call that 10 hrs or so, so maybe I should expect 10% discharge per day while idle and unplugged. Your result seems to suggest 16%/day; but I've made no effort to dig in to things on my end of things - and besides: my results are irrelevant to yours as I no doubt use a different collection of apps than you and possibly different settings for the stock apps, too.
In my case the idle drain rate isn't a very compelling use case - I use the tablet every day, and when it is idle it is plugged into its' charger. If it should happen that it sat idle for a couple days, it's gonna be at 100% when I decide to use it.

Around 6 days of standby, and you want to improve that?
If you want to improve that, turn off your tablet. I'm sure u can spare those 60 sec two times a day you turn on your tablet to check mail.
Keep WiFi off when not in use and you should see a great improvement. I use stock kernel and over that same time period my battery is about the same with about 3 hours screen on time. I only turn WiFi on when I'm actually using it as anything I need synced goes to my phone.

Try better battery stats and see what keeps your cpu from going to sleep state..With this way you can examine what drains your battery my friend.,.
Try turning off auto-sync. (Data usage settings)
Never keep wifi on when sleep (you will lose notification to chat programs, social network app notifications when sleeping)
Use wifi powersafe mode.(Wifi advance settings)
Turn off/disable unneeded background update/apps/extensions/services and flash a rom with minimal google stock apps)
Of course, check for apps that are currently consuming power if any. (App settings, internal application setting)
M kernel also defaults cpu max to 1500Mhz ; stock is 1200. M kernel also sets gpu to 446Mhz ; stock 416Mhz. Altho this numbers might seem minimal, it can affect your battery life considerably shall there be background processing or even right after you start using your device again despite minimally in your case. (Use n download trickstermod)
These might or might not help you in getting more standby time, try and experiment =>
If you are also looking for more screen on time and if you know and accept the risks, you can try undervolting the cpu, gpu and ram in trickstermod, you can also use rootdim to go lower the screen backlight further, but do not go lower than value 4/255 as that is 'off'. thankfully you can set it to not go below 4 in the in app settings before you play with it. My configuration pushed to 8hrs+ screen time without any gaming =>
Do note that li-ion/poly batteries need to drain over time for batt health reasons. They generally last longer if kept in the 20-80% range. Room temp can also affevt battery drain significantly, cold < 26C room drains the batt real fast; and so does hot rooms >34c due to temp & conductivity relationships (batt needs to suply more due to less conductivity in the circuits when hot)
I used juice defender free, and got 1.9x savings. Bought the premium, and it worked for a while, now I get consistent battery drain, worse than before, it seems to have discharged idle down to 16% today.

Juice Defender uses up far more battery than it "saves" and creates a ridiculous amount of instability on your phone. A guaranteed way to achieve significant improvement in your phone's battery life & stability is to uninstall Juice Defender, along with any task-killer apps you are running.
It's bad enough you got gypped into paying for it--but you may as well cut your losses here.

They haven't updated the app for years! I think they pretty much abandoned the project. So there's no support for newer devices. All they do is cut off connections when you don't need it. You can do that yourself.

Yeah the app used to be good but it's rubbish now. Using it would actually drain more battery than it saves. You can see from the battery usage graph that every time the app turns on your data connection, it forces your phone into the awake state which wastes a lot of battery. You are better off leaving data on all the time.

IMO it was never any good--it interrupts system apps repeatedly which only caused them to "attempt" to start up over and over thereby consuming more battery than if Juice Def were never installed on the phone. It was like a task-killer on steroids; a pricey example of the placebo effect that does way more harm than good.

after I overclocked my device and used custom ROM to reduce lag the battery was drains fast and overheat and I used the factory image(in android 4.3) to get the stock kernel and stock ROM my device not overheat anymore but still drains fast and the charger sometimes when my device is on charges slooowly and sometimes while it plugged in it don't charge it decrease 1 percent and stop charging while playing any game and the charger smell like burnt and it charge first while my device is off but that didn't happen to me before the overclock,
I want to know I there are way to increase battery life and fix the charger problem,

A Few Apps For Battery Life
There are a couple things I would do, first is you need to monitor what is draining the battery. One thing to note though is your OC is obviously going to drain the battery quicker than stock and your governor setting could also affect this a lot. I am guessing your custom ROM has a non-stock kernel with it, if not I would recommend Franco's Kernel (r75 is the latest) and he even has an app that will keep you updated and flash for you (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franco.kernel&hl=en) there is also a free version of that. Franco's paid app has a built in power settings option that lets you adjust power usage per app that could be extremely useful in your case. However I would do some monitoring first and make sure a live wallpaper or a hardware monitor is not draining more battery than you think it is.
I've used these two apps and both do a great job of letting you know what is using the battery most during load/idle/sleep:
