I flashed gbhil's Gumbo 1.5C after being on stock 1.5 for a few days after receiving my phone..normal phone usage, I'd drain in about ~14 hours or so..I charged it all through the night..woke up this morning at about 8 and had to put it back on the charger at about 1pm at 25%..charged it to full and now at 10:55 my phone sits at 25% once again...
Anyone have this issue? gbhil, please don't take this the wrong way at all, your rom is beautiful and so freakin' fast..I LOVE it..just wondering if anyone else is seeing the drain that i'm seeing!
when i ran his rom my battery life was super

Can we get a list of your apps? It sounds like you have something running in the background continously. Do you have the proximity sensor app? Did you make sure to hit back when you tested it?
i'm constantly closing my apps with Advanced Task Killer...
Apps installed after flash - Myspace, Facebook, Beautiful Widgets, Barcode Scanner, Speedtest.net app, craigsphone, Pkt Auctions, Bubble, Compass, Palringo (just installed, haven't even entered my login info) Backgrounds, Last.fm, Pandora, iheartradio, Dolphin Browser, Ringdroid, HTC's Battery Widget, ASTRO File Manager

Well, even if you close your apps all the time with the task killer (which you really shouldn't do) -- some of the services for certain applications will continue to run (e.g. FB, Myspace, Battery Widget) -- because they have check for any new updates on your phone. I currently use 1.5c and I haven't had any problems.
Gbhil's 1.5c is built on his custom kernal he made, which has a memory killer itself, so you shouldn't really have to do any extra closing of apps.
I'm afraid I have to echo the OP's battery experience. I'm about as minor as it comes in regards to apps. I don't Eff-Book, no Twitter, no stocks. 15-20 mins on Sprint Navigator (GPS / Location only on for Nav, off when done), 45 mins-ish on the phone, a few texts via HandCent. I wasn't even CLOSE to making it a full day on Gumbo 1.5c, whereas I can usually make it through 2 days on any other ROM. Even Modaco 2.2 with the performance governor outlasted G1.5c by a substantial amount of time.
I trust I've been on these boards long enough and contributed enough that I've shown I know what I'm talking about. And on my phone, default G1.5c is the hands-down winner in sucking my battery dry the quickest.
As for the GCK, I've found similar performance and nearly 3x the battery life by using SetCPU and setting the governor to MSM7K, sliding the min to 480 and max to 524. Then enable profiles > sleep > min 160 max 245
Well, as always -- YYMV.
I've got two HTC Evo's. One lasts for 24+ hours on a single charge, the other lasts 3-4 hours tops. They are both have been running Fresh 0.3 until yesterday. I upgraded one to 0.5 and the other will remain at 0.3 until today. The one still running 0.3 has terrible battery life. I've been running system panel on both and saw that Android.process.acore has kept the CPU ramped up for hours on end, the battery is always 40C+ and when I checked on it this morning it had been streaming 200kbps of data nonstop through the night. There are no market apps installed on this phone except for Advanced Task Killer, GScript Lite, and System Panel. There are no apps installed from untrusted sources.
Anyone know what Android.process.acore does exactly, and why it would be streaming data all night long? System and System Processes also have much higher CPU utilization on this phone as well. I've tried reinstalling Fresh, rebooting the phone, killing absolutely every task ATK will let me, etc and nothing seems to stop the flow of current. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This happened with the stock software as well. One phone always lasted longer than the other. However, I'll let you know if Fresh 0.5 changes anything.
Thanks everyone.
I upgraded 2 days ago. My phone was always stock. Yesterday I took lots of video, like 15 mins or more, and battery, and GPS, and Google sky. A friend of mine invited me to his boat and we were on the river for almost an hour. The battery was still on the green side. I definitely noticed some battery improvement after the software upgrade. When I watched the video on the computer I learned the hard way that there are not vertical HDTVs.
Streaming data all night?
We may just have the first Android Trojan lol.
Sent from my Evo 4G
ejittles I think what you're seeing is a sync-loop, likely with facebook or exchange. This was supposedly one of the things addressed in the recent OTA update.
Try removing and re-adding any accounts you're synced with, disabling background data, etc.

Brilliant Scriptx, I'll bet that is exactly what it is. I'm guessing its the exchange server. I will give that a try when I get access to that phone tonight. Will keep you posted. Thanks a ton.

im with Him i also use shortcuts to turn on and off the internet (mobile) and i also use airplane mode when i don't what any one to call me my battery lasted MORE than 19hr and 31 min and i was using it downloding app, giving files, i saw some videos well you know the thing that you do when you brag about your phone. i am in the ARMY, so alot of people were looking at my iphonekiller (EVO) and wile some friends with evo battery already gone.... mine lasted 19:31 y lasted 24 before some sleep XD ( i have no ATK not needed for battery life)
Do you have a lot of contacts? On my Evo I have my personal gmail which only has a few hundred. On my Hero I have my developer account linked up which has thousands. During sync it isn't uncommon to see:
Code:
SyncManager(): canceling and rescheduling sync because it ran too long.
It will do this over and over and over again non-stop until it finally goes through. Secondly as was already mentioned is something like Facebook/Twitter/Friendstream. I personally only have twitter setup (and I use the official Twitter app for that) but again while testing on the Hero I found that the way Friendstream (and possibly facebook overall, and peep too but I'm not sure) gets updates is it checks the current status on EVERY SINGLE contact of yours. This of course is a huge battery drain.
The reason that I make the comparison with the Hero by the way is the software is basically identical. They are definitely forked off the same branch at HTC. So any problems on the Hero are likely the same on the Evo. The reason I don't have answers for you from the Evo side is because I use it as my personal phone and I don't have much on it.
You may also want to see this post: http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
There is a chance that your phone keeps killing off background processes while they are trying to do stuff, so then they turn around and run again, then get killed again, and again. Automated task killers are the devil. The only way I recommend using a task killer is the same way you would use task manager or top in linux. Just to kill off the random zombie process that may be causing you issues.

Flipz,
First of all thanks for the great work on Fresh Evo. Secondly, I only use ATK at startup to kill any processes that are set to start on boot that I don't care about. It's not set to autokill or to start automatically. I kill ATK when I kill everything else.
I think it has to be friendstream because I only have a handful of facebook contacts and the other phone has over 300 facebook contacts to deal with. Thanks for pointing me in this direction. I'll have facebook turned off on that phone and see if that makes the difference.
That particular phone is only set to receive email via exchange while mine syncs all of my work stuff via exchange so I don't think that is the problem. That just makes me suspect friendstream even more.
*EDIT* Also, I hope that ATK sends a sigterm to these processes and not a sigkill? Or is that not an option w/ the VM? I'm not too familiar with the internals on android atm. Haven't had time to play with anything due to work.

Do yourself a favor and go grab Autostarts (autostarts not autostart) from the market instead. It will be the best $0.85 you've ever spent on an app. It lets you control every single onEvent trigger in Android, preventing the applications from starting in the first place.

haha did you do that conversion for me from EUR to $ or is there a way to set a currency in the market app? Downloading it now. Thank you sir! The Evo has a great community here on XDA and I look forward to contributing when things settle down at work in the next few months.

I'm just smart. haha j/p. When you actually click on buy in the app it will show you the USD price. That's where I grabbed it from. I did buy it for my Hero over 6 months ago just so I could deconstruct it though and I knew it was under $1. lol
Fresh 0.5.3 and the disabling of friendstream has the second phone performing great. Battery lasts 24+ hours now. I suspect it was friendstream. Thanks for the help.
I had this exact same issue and with system panel's help I was able to determine that Facebook for Sense was causing the problem. I turned off FB's auto-update and the problem went away completely. After the OTA, I am able to turn auto-update back on without issue.
I have deleted these apps with Titanium Backup (phone works fine for now):

and some things you listed already
Did make backups of most of it with titanium backup though.
Don't delete sony ericson home , it's the standard launcher fixed this by holding the search button, voice searche for android market, entered the android market from the browser and instaleld launcherpro. anyone got a backup of the standard SE launcher for me?
Got 110MB ram used after start-up now. Seems nice to me (used to be around 170-180 if I recall correctly).
PS I advice against removing office suite as it is used for viewing documents (like word documents, pdf files and those things), unless you got some replacement offcourse.

which version of titanium did you use the free version or the pro and is it easy to get to the apps to be uninstalled.
I used the free version of titanium. It's quite easy. You got a list of all apps that are installed, they are color coded (red=standard phone files, green=standard files with cache you can clear and white is user installed files). Just tab the app and select uninstall. Selecting back-up will only back-up data like preferences and saves I think.
Wornining, don't freeze or un-install SE Home, because it is your home screen and your phone will never unlock the screen. I had to go to titaniam backup and defrost it.
ok just a few questions before I jump in, what does the freezing option actually do?. And also if I was to backup an application first then unistall it, can I then restore it.?

I'm not sure but I think it's like a uninstall that you can put back. You freeze it, rest of the system think it's gone, you unfreeze, and it's back as it was before. Could be used as a test before uninstalling.
OK so by freezing it this actually creates more memory?

I think more ram but not more storage space, uninstalling should safe storage space.
ok froze a couple of apps, but no difference on ram, so do i actually have to unistall the app, after backup, ?so that i can restore it should i want to use it?
if you un-installed any stock apps and you want them back, you propebly can get them here:

My device survived around 60 hours, including 1.5 hours of gaming (super mario kart to be ecaxt), the occasional whatsapp/skype/texting, around 20MB of downloads and some surfing + playing music on my earplugs for a few hours. Still got 15% left (dimmed the screen brightnes when I was around 50%). Deleting bloatware really seems to help.
Hey all,
I have also uninstalled a pile of bloatware, mostly covered by what has been mentioned already. Some of the names I don't remember but I will write what is on my list via Titanium:
iPlayer, magicsmoke, protips, stk, touchpal, thesims3, facebook, twitter, geniewidget, talk, music, timescape, support, digitalclock, owstore, retaildemo, setupwizard, touchnote, vodafoneshop, vodafoneupdates, whatsapp.
From the earlier list, I don't recommend anyone remove the Get Games unless they are sure they don't want any from the "more games" when you slide open your phone. I had thought I could still get the full list of games via market, but games like Backstab aren't. You can't get these games via emulators either.
My phone has went from booting in around 5 minutes to less than 1 minute & I had initially freed RAM up to the point where I was >200Mb.
The phone flies now, you can really see the difference. I'm also keeping widgets to a minimum & I highly recommend no-one puts on the useless task managers to kill processes (which themselves drain the battery). Simply use Running Services within settings. Oh, and I now only have 13 running services
My battery life I haven't noticed yet because the phone is stuck to my hand
Good luck all,
Rixter
Battery life is much better! Charged my phone 5 days ago. Made some calls, played games and it is still 50% charged

Lol, I hear ya. I'm only starting out with Android so the curve is still upward. From what I read from other sources, task killers are only useful if you have them set to automatically kill because the offending services continually restart. Then it's a looping killing field, as you say chicken & egg time. The way forward is to root & remove the apps
I'm trying to be good by using the inbuilt OS to find out status rather than add more hoggers such as battery widgets, task killers etc. Gotta stretch that battery to it's max.
I still haven't had time to play many games yet!!

boot time is faster & phone overall is smoother.
but battery is the same.
4.5 hrs of usage (push mail, whatsapp, sms, a few phone calls) with only 55%.
Update 2:
In the 2nd post you can see an update on some apps I restored with no impact on battery.
Original Post :
So it's been some time since I actually posted something useful on XDA,
I wasn't really doing much in the Android world. I was just using my Note II
and everything was ok.
Until, one day, I updated to a newer firmware, and Battery went to crap.
I don't really remember from which build to which build things went to crap,
But it doesn't really matter for the real purpose of this post.
What was bothering me?
I was not using the phone that much, around 3 hours of screen time,
and 1 hour of talk. Always on 3g or wifi with BT on, sometimes connected.
2 Gmail account syncing, and What'sapp.
I was getting around 20% at the evening, which was not as good as it was when I bought the phone.
Installing Kernels, Factory resets, etc, didn't work.
Nothing helped. BetterBatteryStats and logcatting didn't help as well.
Undervolting, etc, also didn't work.
Until a few days ago, I decided to very aggressively remove bloat from my Stock, Odexed, Xposed Rom. I used titanium backup to remove, but seriously remove a lot of crap.
Also, I am using Greenify to prevent anything that should run in the background from running.
FYI, Before my steps, I had no problems with deep sleep. My phone was sleeping, and CPU was spending most time at deep sleep or 200MHz, but it didn't help.
So, After removing all the bloat, and Greenifying everything, My battery suddenly came around! Android OS is no longer on the top of the list, The phone is generally a lot cooler (temp) and faster.
It's been unplugged for 2 hours and 15 minutes, Screen time is 20 minutes on Full brightness, 10 minutes of phone calls, and my battery is at 95%.
My wifi is connected, and BT is on. (but not connected).
To summarize, I think this is going to be a very good battery day.
Later today, I will update + screenshots, and elaborate on what I have deleted.
Cya for now.
Removed apps list
Update 2:
I have restored some apps, with no impact on battery.
I will color those apps in GREEN.

Interesting thread, please keep us updated on your battery life and usage patterns.
Also, what ROM and kernel are you running? Any particular configurations?
Well, The Note II in general is awesome, I don't feel the need to mess/hack around with it. I was missing Call recording via dialer, and root for some apps that need root.
Was also missing the option to run ANY app with mutliview. So fixed that too.
So I am not in a hurry to upgrade versions/builds when Samsung releases them.
I did instantly replace the Kernel when an SDS Safe kernel came out, I was still on 4.1.1 and things were awesome.
Then I upgraded to LL4, I am running Preseus kernel 3.0.36, with 64GB ext exFat microsd card. I know there are newer roms, I just don't care.

As long as you're satisfied with performance, battery life and features, there's no rule that forces you to upgrade
Aside from the SDS fiasco, which forced me to upgrade.
The easiest is just to run 4.1.1
Easier for me was to remove those apps

Thanks for sharing!
You can simply deactivate most of the apps.
I deactivated all I could and will post if battery life also improves.

For some reason, logical or not, I don't believe in deactivating.
Nor do I believe in freezing. ( I do have the pro titanium version. )
I just don't know how they work, so I don't believe they do.
Uninstall is uninstall.

That's a strange thing to say. You don't know how they work, so, you don't believe they work at all!
Freezing an app is like uninstalling it, without the uninstall part. Simple as that.
I get 35-40 hours of juice without any mods with moderate usage.

Well, I'm a very technical person, I like to know how things work deep under.
I do own and use, a playstation 3, even though I don't exactly know how it works.
So please don't take my words out of context, I do use stuff without understanding specifically how they work.
In the Freeze/Deactivate case - I tried them once, They didn't quite work, in other words. I'm used to uninstalling,
And don't feel that freezing is any better, I prefer apk's are just removed.
An update of my battery status today :
13.3 Hours from charging time.
3 hours and 20 minutes with almost max brightness.
1 hour of Waze (GPS/Screen on)
15 minutes of Fun Run (internet+GPU+Screen)
42 minutes of talking (3g only)
Some browsing, some emailing, some photo taking.
I still have 30% battery. This is a very impressive improvement over what I had before removing all those apps.
Another update :
My phone ran out of juice today in the morning. So that was around 25 hours without a charger, with the stats elaborated in the previous post + reach 4 hours of almost full brightness screen time.
I consider this to be heavy usage, 1 hour of driving with GPS, lots of talking, gaming, high brightness, wifi + 3g + bt, also I am OCed to 1.8GHz and have touch responsiveness at 1GHz, So the phone really flies.

Will do in the next charge cycle.
I charged the phone not to 100% today so it's not been reset. I will fully charge, and then wait for it to deplete and post screenshots and stats.
Good Day all,
I have benefitted greatly from Google and XDA. So I thought I would provide a consolidated way of saving our battery's grace from Android System demonic drain.
I am running Euphoria with Furnace, and I had loads of Gapps installed.
I tried multiple attempts over a 3 days period and did many researches back and forth. And it came down to these few main culprits:
1. Android Location Services
2. Google Play Services
3. Qualcomm Location Services
4. Google Now Launcher
5. Unwanted Sync
Tools I have used to assist in this matter.
1. Disable Service - here
2. Greenify
3. Privacy Guard (should be in built in most custom roms)
4. Titanium Backup
Basically the highest causing drain came from Google Play Services and Qualcomm Location Services. These items persistently wakes the phone up and runs on the background. Using greenify on there further cause issues as greenify tries to hibernate these services over and over again, making this a self-made draining routine.
I followed this thread on Google Play Services drain fix and used the Privacy Guard to perform those tricks. I ran through ALL Google Related Apps and as long as "Keep Awake", "Wake up" or "Auto Start" is enabled, I disabled them. I also look through apps I suspect were waking phone up by looking at the last activation of those events (Keep Awake, Wake Up, Auto Start).
Next I followed this thread on Guide to disable google play internal services using Disable Service app. I also took the opportunity to look at both 3rd party apps and system apps to see if there are services that could be disabled. I disabled Apex Notifier as I realize I didn't needed its service.
Then the next sneaky culprit was the Qualcomm Location Services. Even though I froze them with Titanium Backup, they persist in the system. So making a backup of them, I uninstalled them completely. Hasn't caused me any issue with GPS or Maps. They are namely, com.qualcomm.location and com.qualcomm.services.location. Both appeared as LocationServices 1.0 on Titanium Backup.
I went ahead to Greenify many Google Apps, namely Google App, Google Play Store, Google Services Framework, Google+. I also Greenify many apps that Greenify suggested would slow system down or appear to run in the background which I have no use for.
Lastly I uninstalled Google Now Launcher as it was persistently coming up as alternative home launcher even though I froze it. And I also went through settings of apps to make sure sync were turn off. I only kept Calender and Contacts and Gmail Sync on.
Now I have reduced Android System from 34% to 2% and increased my SOT from 2++ hours to 4++ hours at least. Not an out of earth SOT, but I believe that's decent.
Hope I helped and I wish you all the best in your endeavour to reduce Android System Drain. Cheers.
Thanks bro
Will try and give feedback asap
Suscribed, Rated, and Thanked.
I didn't had time to do any research on this, and this thread appeared on the right time.
Thanks

It should be found in settings page, "Privacy".
I know that this guide is meant for CM based ROMs but I said to myself "ehh, what the hell" and I tried it on my Cloudy 2.2 and the results were horrible. Had to fully charge my device twice in order to go through 22 hours and a total of 2h of screen on time which consisted mostly of browsing and messaging. Wakelock Detector told me that the device was mostly asleep and everything was normal in the Batter Usage menu. Usually I get around 18-20h on a full charge with 2,5-3h SoT. Maybe the locations tweeks were not liked by my Tasker app and caused a huge battery drain, although it didn't appear that much as a wakelock trigger.
I am wondering if the problem was caused by Tasker or the stock ROM itself, but badly I do not have the time now to tweak around and I am reverting back to my previous configuration.

Try using GSam battery monitor to find out the real culprit. I used that to boil down to the final two irritants - Qualcomm LocationServices.
Really enjoying the app.
