I have my third device and all had light bleeding
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium
After about 2 weeks:
Battery life: 4 - it lasts a day and change for my use. Sufficient but I would rather not charge nightly, especially since I cant change the battery.
Speed: 5 - all I could want and more
Software: 3 - this instead of performance. There are some major bugs left in the software that cause display issues, hangs, and crashes. Some of which are completely unacceptable since they are noted in early reviews, and are present and fixed in other devices.
Build quality: 5 - I rated this based soley upon my tablet. I have very acceptable light bleed (which even the best tablets have almost universally), great colors, and none of the other noted build issues. That said this is very much a ymmv situation since Asus's build quality appears to very wildly (either that or half the people here are delusional idiots which I strongly doubt.)
Overall: 5 - exactly what I wanted for less than I wanted to pay. With the right case it is perfect for my needs. A highly portable networking and note taking device.

I'm curious to know, how bad was this light bleeding? I hear a lot of people complain about it, but have never seen a tablet that light bleeding seemed to be a problem.
Same here my screen is good.

I have. Some of the early ipad 2 were real bad even when not on full brightness. It is definitely more noticeable the brighter it is. Mine has a little in the right hand corner but it is negligible and I can only see it when I'm looking at a picture of black.

Thats what I mean. Any light bleed that I have seen is only on a full black screen on full brightness. Are there really any tablets that have such bad light bleed that you can see it during regular use?
Yeah I've seen a couple (my brothers first ipad 2) and a couple other tablets. Nothing consistent enough to call a product line issue after the first run of ipad 2s

My first and second tf101 had light bleed...
Was annoying when watching videos which would have dark scenes and your vision goes directly to those spots... made the device feel like a cheap Chinese knock off...
Asus changed the screen and the mainboard as they noticed a random reboot and now it's perfect and confidence restored :-D

Speed: (5) No problem here and I have watched many Netflex movies with no problem or streaming music.
Performence : (5) No lags for me. I do clear caches each day, found this solves alot of problems.
Build quality: (5) I base this on my unit, have tablet and keyboard dock.
Overall: (5) After two weeks with tablet and a few days with keyboard dock, I have turned off my Nook Color. It is my back up system.

Cons: Would have liked no smooth finish on back of keyboard dock. But it works as designed. Also needed more front weight for keyboard so no tipping of screen.
Pros: see above.

affordable, even in EU the price is pretty sharp compared to competitors
screen, IPS screen is nice to work with
sd card slot, it's way easier to transfer large amounts of data by just swapping the sd card
back cover, I actually prefer the plastic back cover. All that aluminium is way too slippery and not good for WIFI
Cons
Google Play is ridiculously low on proper tablet apps. Looking at my mother's Ipad, I really get jealous
Battery endurance, why give up battery life for just another 0.5 mm thickness reduction.
The 40 pin connector, was it so hard to make micro USB connector for charging? Now I have to carry around that stupid extra cable
GPS, no matter what everybody says, I find the GPS too weak
Almost no accessoires available atm in EU. I had to order the sleeve from Amazon USA
And typically ASUS, I had to return two tablets because something was wrong. Nevertheless, when it works its a good bang for the buck.

I had a xoom family that had micro usb. The port is to fragile for a heavy largish size tablet. My port got hosed.
Most of what I'd say has already been listed. I'll just add something on the matter of the port: while I can fully understand that the port has many uses (dock-tablet interaction, fast charging, etc.), I would've liked it to keep USB compatibility. It would've been possible to make something akin to USB3 micro ports, where the special connector is larger than a USB port, but still "contains" the USB port. That would've given ideal flexibility.
Alternatively, I would've liked to at least be given a female USB adapter for it, so that you could directly plug USB devices into the tablet using an adapter. Having to pay for it on top feels a bit cheap.

The 40 pin connector is actually a really good idea. The tf300 charges off a lot higher voltage than phones do. If you were to plug your phone into the tf300 charger it would either not charge (voltage protection mode), or blow something in the phone up. If you plug your tf300 in to the phone charger, it will either not charge, or charge extremely slowly.
It's not just for charging. It's the port that connects to the dock. It has to not just charge but also send a constant stream of information between two devices. It has to have more bandwidth than micro-USB.

I posted this in the stock thread but feel it would be better placed in its own thread to help those who have a xoom and are considering making the jump to the Transformer.
Got my phone order in to TD yesterday and the transformer showed up today!
Screen: Simply looks better however my finger doesnt seem to "glide" as easy as the xoom. However on the flip side I have already noticed less fingerprints.
Audio: not sure where the speakers are but the sound seems more like its coming at you as opposed to the xoom where the speakers were in back facing away from you, much improved.
Responsiveness: Maybe im crazy but the overall response time seems improved, especially when switching orientation. I also especially notice this in angry birds, when I restarted a level on the Xoom there would be a half second pause while it reloaded the level. On the transformer it restarts the level RIGHT NOW. I thought the Xoom lagged a bit because of all the apps I had installed but I have all the same apps on the transformer and have not noticed any lag whatsoever.
Weight: I knew it was lighter but didnt think I would notice. I was wrong, I noticed the first moment I picked it up. Granted I had the 4G Xoom so maybe the cellular radio made it heavier however it is very refreshing to have a lighter tablet.
Camera: This is the one place where the xoom wins, well kind of. Low light enviroments make a low light shot. The Xooms ability to have flash give it the advantage here. However I will say when there is enough light the transformers pictures seem to be a bit more "crisp". Video is the one area where the transformer falls down. The video is laggy (choppy) and I have a feeling this may be something that firmware can fix (Im still on the original factory firmware).
Wi-Fi: I am in the same location as where I had my Xoom tied into my office wifi. The xoom always read 3 out of 4 bars where the Transformer gets 4 out of 4 bars all over the entire building. I really think the Transformer gets better wi-fi reception.
GPS: The GPS radio in the Transformer is just as good as the one in the Xoom. It pickes me up spot on in a building where we have two steel roofs.
On Screen keyboard: I love the transformers on screen keyboard. Its like they actually put some thought into it. Its button placement is much more refined then the xoom. At first I didnt think i would like it but after 20 minutes of use I found myself being much more productive with the new layout.
Market: Both Droid market and Amazon App store immediately downloaded all my old apps so making the switch was cake. I was concerned I would have to individually re-download all my old apps but both app stores did a fantastic job of getting all my old apps.
The basic feel and operation of Honeycomb seems to be exactly the same. I LOVE the floating ice cube wallpaper and noticed on the Xoom whenever I had an animated background it slowed down the tab. This is NOT the case with the transformer, everything still seems fluid even with the animated background. It is not my intent to bash the Xoom but I paid $800 for it and spent half on this device and it honestly feels like a step forward. Granted I dont have verizon access anymore but found I always used wifi regardless.
Add all of this up and then take into factor you can use a dock that will give you full size USB, keyboard, mouse, a Micro SD card slot that actually works right out of the package and you have a no brainer. Absolutely thrilled I made the switch!
EDIT: added info after one full night of playing with it;
Well after a full night of playing with the transformer (as well as doing the firmware upgrade) I did come up with some more input
Audio: As others have stated the overall sound quality from the Xoom speakers are superior. Yesterday when i was playing with the device I was at work and couldnt really turn it up all the way. When you do hit max volume it is not very loud and is very distorted. At normal volume levels I think it sounds better simply because the speakers arent facing away from you. Now since I rarely run the tablet at max volume this shouldnt be an issue
Video recording: Yes the firmware did help significantly but it did not cure the problem entirely. The video now only slightly studders, which is somewhat tolerable. However my Xoom from day 1 took stellar video and never had an issue. Hopefully future updates will eliminate all studdering but for now the Xoom has the clear advantage in this area.
Battery life: Keep in mind I dont have the dock yet but the battery life on the Xoom is definately better. Not by leaps and bounds but it is noticeable. I played on the TF for 4 hours last night doing everything from video to firmware updated and I dropped to 40%. I did this same process when I got my Xoom for approximately the same amount of time and only went down to 60%. Perhaps its the floating ice cube background? Who knows, but for now the Xoom definately has the edge for now.
On screen keyboard: Yes I like the layout better on the TF but the input is slightly slower then the Xoom. Overall the TF seems more responsive but in this department the Xoom wins out. Again, hopefully this is something that is fixed in future updates.
Im trying to be as fair and honest as possible here so that I can help people make wise decisions. From my original post im still sold on the transformer over the Xoom but there are definately things the Xoom does better and vice versa.
Happy Hunting!

Just FYI, this gets better. There appears to be a coating of something on the screen that disappears over time, or maybe the first time you vigorously wipe it down. I was worried because I found my finger skipping across the screen instead of gliding, but now it's normal. Maybe it's from the protective plastic the Transformer ships in.
i heard about that finger glide thing, take a micro fiber cloth make it very slightly damp and wipe the screen down
I'm mad you got yours already! I'm waiting on the UPS guy right now haha.
Thanks for the comparison!

Agreed. I thought my screen was broken when I first used it.
This changes over time. If it doesn't, a screen protector will solve any problems.
The difference in wifi strength could be due to the fact that the Transformer doesn't have a metal back. I remember when the iPhone 1's had problems cuz of the metal back.

I got a TF + dock+ sleeve + 16 GB memory card for LESS than what I spent on the wifi only Xoom.

I did some tests last night and my Xoom was getting better wifi performance than my TF. I'm guessing any differences in either direction could be related as much to the router as to the tablet...

I agree with most of what you wrote, just some clarification on these items:
Audio: I've actually found that my Xoom's audio is higher quality than my TF's. I don't know if there's variability between TFs, but the Xoom's is both richer (more base and midrange, I think) and louder (even without something behind it to redirect the sound forward). I did a test last night and found the TF's speakers to be very inferior to the Xoom's.
Camera: The newest firmware definitely improves video capture, so no worries there.
Wi-Fi: I did a test last night with the Xoom and TF, and actually found the Xoom to perform better. However, there are too many variables to say which is better. The TF's performance is just fine regardless.
And ultimately, the screen is SO much better and the keyboard dock really does seal the deal. For $399, I think the TF is by far the better machine and would be even if the Xoom were the same price.
I believe it is something to do with the Gorilla Glass

Thanks for the input. For audio I agree the Xoom had more midtones but to me they were muffled and being priduced by a tiny speaker that has no business trying to replicate those frequencies. The TF is much more treble based and to me sounds better due to that. I still stand by the TF highs sound better overall though.
Thanks for the input on the camera. I see you can manually download the new firmware but my TF is so new I think I will wait for the OTA update as I dont want to risk bricking a brand new device.
Maybe I just got lucky on the wi-fi but it definately gets better signal even at distance. But as another poster stated sometimes wi-fi signal performance isnt always dictated by the using device as much as it is by the router itself.
Damn I love this screen....

i agree too, even the audio out is worse than the xooms. there's just too much emphasis on the highs. it also doesn't get as loud and distorts more at lower levels - this is all through the headphone jack, not onboard speakers.
i was hoping that audio out would be as good as the xoom as i thought the xoom was as good or possibly better than my ipad's output. i'd have to assume it's a software tweek since i'd guess they'd have the same audio processors.
one other thing about the tf - make sure you have fingernails if you like to insert and remove micorsd cards in this unit. i cannot replace my sdcard without something to push it back in after removing it.

03stage2 - In general I agree with your comparison. I've been using the TF and Xoom side by side for the last week.
Battery life: I've noticed the the TF battery drains faster when it's not being used, like overnight. The Xoom seems to use less battery when it's not doing anything. In active usage I haven't noticed a difference, but I use them for different things.
Screen Keyboard: I hated the Xoom OSKeyboard from day one, I almost took it back it was so frustrating. The Xoom does not seem to have the same level of multitouch. The TF keyboard has been much better, I can almost touch type with the TF keyboard.
I've already promised the Xoom to a family member as a gift. Now I'm debating selling the Xoom and giving them a TF instead (assuming I can get my hands on another one!).

If you read my comments in the end of the blue I still say the TF is better IMO. However I dont want to be one of those biased folks who simply promote the product they own. As I stated they both have areas that each one does better in but overall the TF still feels like the better choice to me. Also, the TF is so new that i have a feeling allot of the bugs im seeing will be corrected with FW updates.
I would hope that the folks here would benefit more from an honest review rather then sugar coating the review and making it seem like I had my own agenda....

I agree.
I have an iPad 2 with its "Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating" and the glass is so smooth and easy to slide your finger on.
I also have an ASUS EP121 Tablet with Gorilla Glass and i did notice a different feel than the iPad 2. It does get better the more you clean the glass.
I haven't got a Transformer yet but since it has Gorilla Glass, it should feel the same as the EP121.
Not complaining, just different technology.
Hey all,
Figured I'd pass on my opinions of these devices, and since I finally chose the TF, I figured I'd get the least flames posting here - lol. Looooong time gadget geek/hacker going way back to the Palm Pilot days. If it was a tech gadget, and particularly if it was internet capable, I probably owned one. My current phones are a HTC Desire Z (w/ NAM AT&T 3G) running CM7, and an iPhone 4 jailbroken.
Over the past couple of months I've owned (or still own) the Xoom, iPad 2, TF101 (w/dock) and GTab 10.1. I still own all but the Xoom, and here's a few of my thoughts on all of them and why I'll be keeping the TF.
Xoom - Well built, sturdy, and nice design. Lousy screen (comparitively) and lack of promised features like LTE and the SD Card werre a bummer, but my biggest reason for selling that one was the screen, and seeming lack of "responsiveness" from Moto on the device. Plus I knew cooler devices were coming soon.
iPad 2 - Not yet Jailbroken (grrr) but it's still a suprisingly good media consumption device as is. I go the 32GB AT&T model, and have used it for a couple of trips as a laptop replacement. It'll be cooler when I can JB it, but since I have a fiarly big investment in iOS software, I'll probably keep it a while. Not real impressed with it's Safari performance, considering all the hub-bub about how fast it is. But it does do games great, is slick and trouble free, and nice sized with a great (smart-cover) solution.
Galaxy Tab 10.1 - I got this one on Sunday, so I haven't given it a whole lot of time. It's a beautiful, "Apple like" device from a design perspective. Also the screen while very saturated, is very nice, light weight and thinness also gets it lots of oooohs and aaawwwws from everybody. I hate that Samsung doesn't allow direct mounting of the internal storage, and we're forced to use that awful KIES software. I've just been using Drobbox and all my music is in the Google cloud. This one would have been my second choice if I didn't already have (and love) the...
Transformer 101- now this one is my keeper. A lot has to do wth the dock - I'm an "ultraportable" laptop fan (current Lenovo x220) so I like smaller laptops, and man this thing makes a damn good laptop substitute with tablet caapabilities. The screen is gorgeous, the responsiveness of the OS is equal to or better than the other Androids, and even beats iPad when Safari is sucking wind. I love the quick controls in the browser (missing in the Tab) and that it feels like there's a really robust community developing for this device. I'm not rooted on any of these yet, and actually pretty content like that. Therre's a few things I'd do with root (and anti ad hosts file for one!) but for the most part I'm ok with them as is. When I start to get bored I'll probably root this too.
I sold the Xoom about a month aftr I bought it, I'll keep the iPad (partly for the fun things to try like iOS 5 and it's great for kids to play games on) but the Tab is going back to BB (restocking fee be damned.
I just really like the versatility of the TF w/dock. I have it paired with a small BT mouse and it's like a pretty full featured laptop, that goes into Tablet mode at the flick of a switch. Still on the hunt for the slimmest folio case for it that allows it to be propped up for typing, but the kybd dock does that for now.
Hope these tips help some people interested in any of these, remember their just mmy opinions and everybody has different needs and required attributes that may differ from mine. Either way their all fun.
If anybody has any question about my experiences, fire away, love to chat gadget talk abou the cool toys.

Good Post. Thanks.

I quite agree with you.
From all these devices i tried the iPad 2 and the ASUS transformer.
Im already acquainted with iOS and although its simple and intuitive it's kind of boring. im quite into personalizing my device which the iOs wont really allow.
The bigger and wide screen on the transformer is really nice, and although build-wise it may seems "cheaper" then the iPad (everything that is not shiny-aluminum-ultra-appleish is cheap nowdays) its a comfortable device to hold in the hand.
Price-wise the transformer costs less, + the keyboard dock which increases battery life and also allows you to use it as a netbook.
Performance seems to be almost identical on both A5 and the Tegra 2. BUT the transformer is overclockable, therefore you can squeeze some more juice out of it.
I didnt use the other two, but by reviews i understood that the xooms screen is washed out and not all that great, and the lack of a MicroSD on all of the three (xoom,iPad,GT10.1) is meh-ish.
just picked up mine last night after doing a lil bit of reseasch for a week or so glad i chose this one,, love you wife she bought for me.. BAMBAM

Thanks for the comparison.
Regarding TF and Tab 10.1 screens, which do you prefer? Which is nicer for news/e-book reading? Does Tab 10.1 oversaturation mess with your eyes?

Don't agree with this point. I had the Tab 10.1 for about 3-4 days and I had it mounted on my PC as a plug-play device and was able to transfer files directly. All your need is to install the proper USB drivers from the Samsung US site

Yes it does. Although the Galaxy screen seems better than the TF , its for sure over saturated and hurts your eyes if watched closely for lot of time.

Yeah, you could be right. I'm just so happy with the flexibility of the TF that for now (and for now could be 1-3 months lol) it's the one I'm choosing. IAs I stressed, this is just my humble opinion, hope everybody is happy with their respective choices.
glad to see that are still people who can choose between products without trashing another.
i'm stlll not sure if i'll send my tf back. i do like the versatility it has but seeing that i am keeping my gt 10.1 it's really hard to justify keeping it.
I don't think the keyboard dock can be stressed enough, and I wish I saw more advertising from Asus around the tremendous increase in productivity it provides. It's really not "just" an external keyboard or dock. It really does turn the TF into a completely different class of machine.
That said, I'll admit that if it weren't for the dock, I'd probably opt for the GT 10.1. I don't really use the microSD card I have in my TF right now, and I doubt I'll ever use HDMI. So if choosing between the two on the screen, size and weight alone, I'd probably lean toward the GT. However, man, the keyboard dock makes me want to stick with the TF no matter what else might be out there. As someone who needs to be able to write long-form stuff anywhere, I can't think of a better device than the TF...
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
i'd have to suppose the lack of advertising is one major factor for the price of the tablet. moto, apple, samsung all have commercials yet i've not seen one asus commercial, not even for their laptops.
To each his own I guess. I played with them all as well including the acer and viewsonic and kept the wifi Xoom. I really wanted to like the Asus because of price but it was just as bulky as my xoom and had serious build quality issues. The Asus screen was great, the quality around the screen, not so much. Enjoy your new toy dude. Aint technology fun
The only one I haven't played with is the tab 10.1, I secretly want one but Samsung and I have bad history.

The dock is the absolute biggest reason for my choice. With my BT mouse (dislike trackpads) I feel like I'm using a real computer, with 16hr batter life and tablet flexibility. Love the shape, size and design of both the iPad and Tab 10.1, but just love the flexibility of the keybd dock too much - at least for the next 90 days or so. ;-)

Ok, I'm a little late to the game... but if anyone buys one of these tablets second hand.... like I just did, then here goes nothing: I bought a Motorola XOOM wifi (32gb) and an Asus TF101 (16gb) (and I nearly bought a Galaxy Tab 1 and an iPad Gen. 1). It's my first tablet; I haven't yet figured out what I'm gonna do with it, but there ya go.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 1: I passed on the Sammy because it did not have an SD card slot.
iPad Gen. 1: I passed on the iPad because.... well, it's an iPad. About as useful as a maxi-pad to me. I was put off by the closed system. It means far less choices for free or hard-to-get apps (of the kind I might need), and limited storage with no SD card options. It wouldn't do, even for a kid's tablet. (Despite the fact I have an iPhone....).
Asus Transformer Eee Pad TF101: I really wish they would have stuck to one name, and left it at that. What was the original name? The "Asus Transormer Mario Consuela Maria Concito Esperanto Gonzalez Eeee Pad TF-101"?
Motorola Xoom: Anyway, it came down to Asus and the Xoom. And boy, I had a hard time deciding. So hard, I spent 3 days of my life testing these two tablets, up, down, backwards and forwards. I ended up settling on the Xoom, but first, the Asus....
The Asus has a gorgeous screen, compared to the Xoom. The TF101 is sharper, more clarity, brighter, blacks and whites are more darker and brighter, respectively. Better contrast and angle viewing, and reading books is less of a strain with a more muted white for the background.
THe sound of the Asus however, is like slamming a suitcase lid down on twelve kittens while Freddy Krueger scratches his name out on the chalkboard. It's the ridiculous choice of stuffing really tiny speakers so they can fire out both sides of the unit. Even EQ'ing the thing with Viper4FX could not hide the tinny shortcomings of the speaker sound. Which also had a tendency to break up at louder volumes (its particularly keen to distorting around 500hz). Connected to a stereo though, was quite another matter.
Though much less bass, richness and body, the Asus resolved timbre better than the Xoom on music program material, output through a stereo via headphone jacks. However, I still preferred the sound of the XOoms (yes, "Xooms" as in I had TWO Xooms to compare), because the Asus was causing some degree of stress through its sound and picture, as compared with the calmer energy of the Xooms.
The construction of the Asus was nice in parts (ie. color, back design, aluminum frame)... but the superb construction, design, looks, case and smaller size of the Xooms is what pushed me toward the Motorola choice. I have not seen any tablet as well built as the Xoom. The Xoom has a timeless design and hough it is heavy on the wrist if you have to hold it up, it just feels nicer in the hand than the ultra-wide Transformer; which appears more dated due to its size and design. The really nice charging dock and 32gb internal (vs 16gb of Asus) also helped me accept the inferior colors and viewing angle of the Xoom. I also liked the nice design of the various white & green charging LEDs, around the screen of the Xoom - the Asus has none of that. I was not enamored by the fact that Asus required special prorpietary data cables, where the Xoom uses microUSB. What also pushed me toward the Xoom was the mediocre camera in the Asus. No flash and grainy photos (though it let in an unusual amount of light, despite or because of no flash... but it was too much light, and washed out detail at times). The Xoom 5mp camera was excellent... perhaps better than that on my iPhone. I like the idea of snapping pictures on a tablet, because of the large viewfinder.
I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to design. On pure performance and lightness of weight, the Asus wins. But you might not feel like a winner, trying to listen to vidoes and music on those tinny built in speakers for extended periods of time.
My wife has a Samsung Tab 4, and comparing it with the Asus, I don't find the Tab 4 any much better in any way, and in some ways, not as a good (it has a cheaper build, for example).
Hello everyone in the asus eeepad world... can anyone or everyone tell me the pros and cons of this tablet? I was thinking about buying this tablet but not sure if I should yet so plz...reply all u want, thx!
Sent from my LG Thrill 4G on Cm7 Nightlies with ICS theme!
Pros
Cheap
Everything works
Amazing battery life
Great Devs
Cons
Little clunky
Not the greatest build quality (lightblead ect)
Pros: Micro SD slot, attachable keyboard (which comes with 2 USB slots, and one SD card slot), battery (up to 13 hours with keyboard charging), mini HDMI (although I haven't used it yet!).
Cons: Slow, Camera lens collects dust inside, screen reflexes a lot of lighting, collects alot fingerprints which makes it annoying, not every video format works (that's why I don't use mini HDMI), uses only it's own USB cable.
Pro: It's a tablet
Con: A little heavy to be used hand-held.
Don't buy a TF101 now unless you must. Wait until March when Samsung releases Galaxy tab 2, which is actually a low price model. This will drive down the price of many other tablets, including Transformer.
It is pretty heavy to be hand-held (an opinion I made after playing with my friend's Kindle Fire), but it's nice when you set it with a cover/stand thing on your lap, in front of your face, or lying down with it on your chest (unless you are a bosomy female, I guess).
I'd add microphone sucks for recording sound to the con list. I think it'd be a lot more useful if/when we get ICS + Cornerstone.
Overall do you guys think its better than ipad and/or the nook

GTab2 is a 7-inch tablet. Why would this drive down the price in the 10-inch arena?
The only thing I say it's that i would prefer a better looking screen (like galaxy tab 10.1)
The rest is really really good
...and with ICS things will be better more
I so look foreword to buying the eeepad transformer and seeing you all again... I think the choice is obvious and I just have to save up now I just need 100$$$ now so... I will see all of u again soon thanks foe the help!(you can still post here I'm not done listening to the pros lol)

It means on the margins of the screen you sometimes see a light/glow peering out towards the center of the screen.

It's really only noticeable on dark screens. If you're watching a lit up movie you won't notice a thing.

Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
isn't it light bleed common on ips screen?
i remember i read this somewhere else
lightbleed occurs on all backlit screens. eg IPS displays (Transformer, xoom,Ipad) are notoriously bad with light bleed hardly noticeable except in the boot screen though
Pros:
Excellent multimedia device for movies, book reading, internet browsing, email, note taking, music, games, news reader etc.
Great screen. I've had mine since the summer and have NO light bleed. I know what it looks like; I have an Evo with horrid light bleed issues.
Value for what you get is unsurpassed by anything on the market.
Customization No two Transformers will look alike unless they are straight out of the box. I disagree with the statement "lacks developer support". There are many ROMS out there and rooting is pretty easy if you are looking to tweak.
Asus is pretty good with updates in my opinion though some are impatient with the ICS update delay, but Asus has been updating this tablet faster than any other tablets on the market.
Micro SD available for expansion a must if you want to put a couple movies on it to watch when you have no wireless access.
Cons:
Fingerprints? It's a touchscreen what do you expect?
Heavier than some other tablets but not unbearable unless you are playing accelerometer type games. Get a case that supports on the tabletop and it becomes a non-issue.
Light glare is an issue especially fluorescent lights Takes getting used to angling away from the glare.
All in all this pad is one of the best tech purchases I have made in years. I am not disappointed at all and look forward to updating this tab when the 700 series hits the market. It allows options few other tabs allow and if you throw in the keyboard dock, no other tablet allows. I highly recommend it.

Well at launch it had a lot of bugs but I think they're fixing themp up one by one
Personally I would've bought the prime but I didn't have the extra 100 dollars so yeah good choice!
Pros:
Fantastic screen
Cheaper than other 10 inch tablets
MicroSD slot
Docking keyboard
Very little bloatware
Cons
Some have noted that the Transformer is larger and more clunky than other comparable tablets. While this is true, it does not bother me
I've had to deal with Asus's customer service and RMA process. It isn't fun. So, while this really isn't a gripe with the tablet, I think it should be taken into consideration
The back of the tablet is 'creaky' when small amounts of pressure is applied (i.e. holding it normally)
I really wanted to get the N10, I really did. But Google just had to **** it up with their terrible customer service and a ****ty checkout system that spews out errors every single time. I'm done waiting around, so now looking for an alternative, any suggestions/recommendations?
I'm more of an Android fan obv.
TIA.
UPDATE: I ordered mines after a few e-mails with Google. Got the beast. It's amazing!
Ordering from Google was a piece of cake for me. I ordered it on a Saturday, got it that Thursday (Lexington, KY to Los Angeles). But I've never had to deal with their Support, so I'll take your word on that.
Having said that, I honestly don't think you'll find another tab that compares with the N10, but I love mine so much I'm hardly objective. I believe if you persevere with Google you'll thank yourself down the road.

Their support is basically "read the online help sections!!!!".
Anyway, I got this email just now from Google:
"Hello,
During a recent review of your Google Checkout account, we were unable to
verify your information.
As a result, your account has been temporarily suspended and you will be
unable to place orders. In order to resolve this situation, please provide
us with the requested information of MR XXXX
within 3 business days by filling out this form"
Um, I have been buying apps with this account for a long time now. What gives?
You got me, bud. If it's a credit card issue, maybe your card company can help. Sometimes when your billing address isn't *exactly* as it's written on your statement it can cause problems. But if you've been been using the same card all along, that's probably not it. I know because of the expense of the tab, my card company called me to confirm I had placed the order before they would authorize it. Maybe that has something to do with it.
I would tell you to buy from Amazon, but the last I checked, their pricing was higher.

The best alternative right now is IMO is the Kindle HD 8.9, but it is much more difficult to root and all that. If you wait a few more months other companies will have powerful tablets out with new processors and probably high res screens.
You could buy the nexus at retail too? I almost got the Samsung note 10.1 myself. Its screen isn't as nice and I would miss a few other things like the front facing speakers. But the note has the stylus and doesn't have the habit of rebooting unexpectedly either.
Aren't you going to have to straighten out Google's credit card issue in order to buy apps in the future anyway?

The note also has front facing speakers. The shape is very similar to the n10. Major difference is the note has a plastic feel to it and in my opinion doesn't feel as solid as the n10.
Also the note does not suffer from light bleed bit you're right, the screen is not as nice!

I'm in UK, and I don't think any retails sell the N10. I would have bought from Amazon but they are £100 more dearer and eBay prices are just insane - in comparison to Google's price tag.
The main reason why I want the N10 is for the screen. I'm a picky prick when it comes to screen resolution. Is light bleed a huge deal on these devices?
I've sent Google the docs they asked for anyway.

Only alternative that ccould match up with the n10 is going to the the Sony Xperia Tablet Z but you will have to wait another month or two. It may actually be a little faster than the n10 as well.
There has been a lot of complaints regarding light bleed but personally it wasn't an issue. Sure I can see some slight paleness on 2 sides in the dark at max brightness but in regular light using auto-brightness I don't see it on a dark screen. And quite frankly I would never have even noticed if it hadn't been for the notorious thread here. LOL
Best alternative its to wait for a new product... Nexus 10 II ... Maybe these guys from google will solve issues with battery life and with charging time.. Its a shame that you have almost perfect configuration but unable to use because of not enough juice. Not a complete satisfaction and this make you angry and tired to be dissapointed. Good luck

I wasn't planning on taking the tablet outside much, Used for indoors mostly, so when not in use would be charging. How 'bad' is the battery life like?

There are various experience with the battery... I dont know where its the problem. I tired all the variants. Kernels rom.. Brightness etc but i cant get more of 5 hours screen on ( normal use)
I realized the problem imediatly after ive got the tablet.. 3 hours at that time from 100 % to 0 %... After few cycles ive got 5 hours but after more cycles she remained at this average. I can not do a RMA anymore. Mine doesn't have screen bleeding. Maybe you will have luck to find one with battery and screen ok. By the way, the screen its nice but not so amasing . No deep Black make sometimes screen look cheap LCD. And so what its grate for some if they almost all keep it like 30% for keep the battery alive more. Sorry for my english
Anyway the main reason i like it its because it rolls android... And have a good cpu... Besides this horror customer care from google. No original accesorie yet after months from launch... That is not the way i hoped from a monster like google and Samsung.

Samsung note 10.1
I think this tablet is the best alternative right now, because color reproduction is more vibrant then the N10. Black is deep, other main color like red, blue, and green look much more attractive to the eyes beside from the true multitasking. ( That's why I return N10 for the note 10.1). The screen isn't that sharp compare to the N10 but it isn't that bad. (If you use the tab at a right distance, then you won't notice the pixels). Color and the true multi screens, and S-pen are a plus for the Note 10.1. In my opinion, It is the best tab since I already used the Asus transformer prime, Microsoft Surface, Nexus 10. Sorry about my English and I hope this help you.
Even my HTC desire 2.5 years old amoled display it has deeper black than n10. Don t be so overexcited. Let the big companies that already have the next 10 year tehnology deliver to us the goods faster instead of asking 500 dollars on a product that has so many anoing insuficiences.
We need a little small official pogo cable for 4 months guys... Wtf.. And Its not ready yet... This is a nice comedy with us playing in ...

An amoled will ALWAYS have better blacks then an LCD. Its the nature if the display. Blacks on an Amoled are pixels that are turned off, whereas an LCD panel reproduces blacks while lit. Produced blacks (amoled) > Reproduced blacks (LCD). The trade off is worse battery life, inaccurate (but over saturated, which people love) colors, and mostly god awful whites.
The Nexus 10 is a fabulous tablet. It has its issues, they all do. But for a power user like myself, there isn't even a competition. I cannot use a Touchwiz device, and ASUS burned their bridge with me over the Nexus 7. (EMMC issues, build quality nonexistent). Sony is a true competitor but I cannot stand around for months waiting for a company to issue an update. Developers are great, and porting AOSP and CM are good in general, but they have issues and most of the time the cons outweigh the pros and I have to fall back to a stock based system. To each their own though, there is not a "One tablet fits all", even the iPad isn't perfect. I couldn't get past the Apple wall, and 4:3 aspect ratio

Amoled screens have an infinite contrast ratio, your HTC Desire will have deeper blacks the an any single non amoled device out there, put it next to an iPhone, a Nexus 4, a Droid DNA and the result will be the same.
The black levels could be better here, I won't deny that.
Wait for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. It's rumored to have a high resolution screen like the Nexus 10. Hopefully one with deeper blacks and punchier colours though.
Hopefully it will be announced on the 14th of March with the SGS4.
Just curious...is the Nook HD+ with Cyanogen worth a look? It's a bit bare-bones compared to the N10 (no BT, no camera) but otherwise, it seemed like a good value @ $269. From what I can tell, you can even buy an N2A card to make the transition to CM painless.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
If you don't need Android... The iPad 4 is a decent enough alternative. Slightly heavier, thicker and lower resolution screen. They are on sometimes on sale too.
In android world... If not the nexus... Maybe the new Asus Memo. It's a 300 tegra 3 tablet... SD and it looks like Asus fixed the memory. If not the nexus, I'd honestly wait because a whole new generation of processors are coming.

6. Happy with the developers attention ( kernel , ROM and recovery ) especially with Trinity kernel and AOKP Mr Robinson
7. Feel proud for have this in front of my friends ( I keep the bad thinks for me about it )
8. Happy with the CPU performance
9. Happy with the camera quality
10. Happy with the micro USB and hdmi connectors and possibility to connect : mouse , keyboard , HDD , Ethernet etc.

I actually kind of disagree with the previous post. Generally my experience has been pretty good. Battery life is solid for me...I generally get 6-8 hrs of screen time each charge. Charging is slow, but the battery is 9000mAh which is huge. I plug mine in at night and its fully charged in the morning. Its all about your own expectations I guess.
Performance is really good and the screen is amazing. Some complain about lightbleed but its not an issue for me. Peruse the forums. There are many topics about issues.

Coming from an iPad, extremely dissatisfied. Nowhere near as smooth and has half the battery life. The colors on the display are not as vibrant and the blacks are not as deep and rich. Unacceptable stability, tons of freezing, crashing and random reboots which are all symptoms of android 4.2, zero accessory support, half the battery of the iPad (I'm lucky to get three hours of screen on time at max brightness which I need to be on to see the screen in brightly lit rooms (iPad got much brighter and lasted 10 hours of actual screen on time). Games are laggy and I just regret this purchase.
I was expecting an experience like I have on my note 2. But its nowhere near as smooth and stable. And actually lasts a shorter amount of time before it needs to charge.
I'm only two days in but I love this thing... does have minimal light bleed but it's not noticeable in normal use... wish I got it sooner

Overall, I love it..had it near a month now and use it alot more than I expected too.
As an avid android user, I am glad I didnt jump ship to ipad which I thought about doing so, but glad it was just a thought. I still hate hate hate iOS.
Battery life sure could be tad better, but it gets me through the day and can toss on charger at night.
screen is just awesome looking
gaming is fun, love hooking up my controller via a 14cent otg adaptor and play nes/snes/playstation games.
Plex is just pure awesomeness on the tablet
and well Simpsons Tapped Out...damn addicting..
over all just been a great experiance, and nothing really would change, and glad I chose this.
Really pleased with my N10, had it since just after release. Performance is excellent. The only app I have that lags is FF. I had some random crashes and lockups before 4.2.2 but since then it's been rock solid with not a single problem. Battery life is good considering the outstanding screen it's powering.
The only issue I have is it losses time occasionally, I know this is a recognised problem but I would like to see it sorted as I use the tablet as a bedside clock/alarm when I'm travelling.

Use an app like "clocksync" to deal with device time slippage

If lost or stolen, I'd buy....
another without hesitation! I guess I'm lucky, I just don't have or see all the "issues" for my use of this tablet that others seem to struggle with day after day. :victory:

Quite mixed.
I'm still thin about that myself.

you don t see an issue that google lied us about the battery life and no care about OEM accesories?
- i paid for 7 hours of web browsing - i get 5 hours ( stock rom , stock kernel , no background apps running instead of web surfing ones , brightness to 30 % )
- i paid beacause its google/samsung and i can have a simple case that fits this product - i got nothing
- i paid for google brand because its a inovative company - i ve got no pogo cable to charge faster not to charge more that stays on
you are in heaven now - don t you worry child
Google -> put your as to work and deliver us some high class products like the search engine is ! I tought that you are the best ... don t get us more disappointed
Samsung -> shame on you because of the ugly bleeding screen problem . wtf you are nr 1 company in the world that produce this toys ... be carefull next time

Have had my Nexus 10 since early December, after having returned a disappointing TF700T. I use it heavily, just about every day.
I ran it stock for a while, although unlocked and rooted. Apex Pro. Using Chrome Beta let me avoid most of the early issues, and since android 4.2.2, this has been rock solid.
I recently flashed a custom ROM: AOKP PUB build. I'm also using the KTManta kernel. Performance, which was always great, is even better now. Lightning fast, super fluid / smooth. Incredibly reliable and stable.
I've had no issues at all re: squeaking, creaking, flexing, or light bleed. WiFi has been excellent in my experience.
Battery life has been fine. I average about 6 to 7 hours screen time in a typical day, and after a 16 to 18 hour day like that, I still have about 12 to 15 percent battery left. I generally leave brightness at about 70 pct.
I have SwiftKey Flow installed... Spectacular on this device and on my GNex.
I have the third party pogo cable and love it. I also found a genuine leather version of the Moko slim multi angle case on Amazon for $21, and it is perfect. Elegant, very functional, very well made, and a perfect fit.
I'm finding more and better ways to use the Nexus 10 every day. Spectacular device that is changing the way I work. Very highly recommended.
...beamed to your planet from my Nexus 10
I'm happy with the Nexus 10. I think the battery lasts enough, its shape is attractive and the data capacity is good.
Let's get real here
I'm not a hardcore XDA user and i don't modify my tablet more than it needs, So my experience with the nexus 10 has been great. Even though i have lost so many features from tf700t (with dock + SD Card) to Nexus 10, But it's worth it after seeing that performance that i got from the nexus 10.
Rants : only 16GB, Not way to upgrade. (Of course you could use cloud services)
Camera : 5MP, Would have loved to see a higher MP camera (It's not a big difference between 5-8)
Apps : Higher the quality, More the space it takes and it will eat up those 16gbs (You could get the 32GB but i haven't seen the 32gb available in over 3 months)
Love the Screen, Love the Performance, Love the Mic quality & Everything else ( Of Course apps that we download for the nexus 10 aren't updated yet, Well 95% of them)
If you want a tablet right now & You could get through the apps updating period (Where they update the graphics for Nexus 10) Then you are good for Nexus 10, Even though Nexus 10 is hard to get your hands on.
But If you want a simple tablet that will do your stuff without being confused, Nexus 10 is the way to go. But suggest If you want a table that already has a ecosystem you could try the iPad 4 they have alot of apps optimized, It's better to wait and think about it than going out and buying it (I learned it the hard way)
It depends on you and how you want to spend your money.
The things i said are something that i hate or love / My Opinion & Should not taken as a hate message.
Overall the Tablet gets 10/10, The things i mentioned (Rant) are things that doesn't bother me but i would have loved to have it, Just for sake of having them. I'm Completely happy with my tablet and couldn't wish better. "Whisper" 64GB or 128GB "Whisper"
Thank you very much your opinions!
You are very helpful.
Best regards
My glowing opinion of my N10 here:
http://dibblebill.blogspot.com/2013/02/farewell-a500-hello-manta.html
However, I am afflicted with the strange battery indicator issue. Calling Samsung later today. Give the N10 a 9.5/10. I get 8-10 hours at about 30-40% brightness, though that's all I need in my work environment. Get home from work shift and still have 50-70% battery left, depending on how much I use it at work.
All in all, I considered the Acer a500 the BEST of the Honeycomb tablets, and I, based on experience, consider this the best (for my purposes) of the ICS/JB tablets. Its only contender when I bought it was the Note 10.1.
I've been using mine a lot, every day basically, from watching movies and tv shows on netflix/other sites to playing games (Android and emulators) to productivity (Evernote, Kingsoft Office with a bluetooth keyboard) to web browsing. Works great, still fluid, and overall very happy with it, I actually got rid of my laptop as I could do everything I wanted to do on it.
I've had mine since the end of December, and I use it every day. I absolutely love it. My only issue with it is that I can never decide which ROM to keep on it. I've been running a healthy diet of CM 10.1, AOKP, and PA, and all run so well, and smoothly. This tablet has gone beyond my expectations.
