Black screen? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I have been having some issues with this. I'm on Mirage Kang 7.2. Usually, Mirage is wonderful but something went wrong today. I was in the Play Store on my Nook updating four apps (like EzPDF, Go Launcher, not sure it matters though...). Anyways, it froze so I force shut off the device but when I went to turn it back on nothing happened, it just went to the infamous black screen. I did some searching and people said the boot partition is corrupted.
I tried updating the ROM to the latest release to see if anything would happen to no avail. I tried plugging the Nook into my computer and turning it on but that didn't work either. The only ways I could find to fix it was to revert back to stock. Does anyone know a way out of it while keeping my apps, data, etc?

[Q] ClockworkMod restore doesn't work

I was running CM7 n136 with nook tweaks (overclocked to 1300). My NC randomly rebooted (probably because I haven't quite nailed down my undervoltage settings) and when it came back it had me at the android start screen (touch the android to begin). I clicked through it and almost all my apps were gone; it was like I was starting CM7 for the first time. I had a handful of force closes too (they just popped up right away before I could click through the startup). Not a problem, I thought, and I went to recover with ClockworkMod (3.2.0.1). Restoring doesn't work and I end up at the same screen. I've tried restoring two different restore points and neither works.
Any ideas how to get around this?
Thanks for all your help!

Endless Rebooting

I have had this problem for a while now. Whenever I shut down or reboot my nook it will reboot on its own over and over for quite some time.
It seems random, sometimes rebooting only a few times, but most of the time it reboots many, many times.
It'll get to the main screen, start loading stuff, then reboot.
I just recently figured out that if I turn the screen on and off rapidly for a few seconds it will interrupt whatever is causing it to reboot. But this does not always work.
I'm using cyanogen, and I think it started while using a nightly. I then tried a couple newer nightlies, then the stable 7.0, then newer nightlies, then the stable 7.1, and now the most current nightly.
Anyone have any idea what's going on? It's driving me nuts.
Could someone point me to a good tutorial on installing cyanogen, with how to format correctly and such? I would not mind starting from scratch with this, formatting it and everything.
Thanks so much.
Ok, first off are you running from an SD card? If so what is the brand and class?

No, its installed on internal memory. I do have an SD card that I use for storage, and its a Sandisk 16GB.
Well, I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160424 and paid special attention to the partitioning section at the beginning because I have a blue dot version. I then installed the most current nightly of cyanogen and google apps. I also formatted /data a couple times and formatted /cache.
I did not get the rebooting problem.
Was it something to do with the partitioning?
And now its doing the reboot thing again. Just got most of my apps reinstalled and decided to reboot to see if it does it. And it does.
Any ideas?
Didn't know the root cause yet but first thought, could you redo the fresh installation, flash gapps but do not install any app. Try to reboot a few times to see if problem persisted. If not, thinking about what kind of app you installed.
That's what I figured I'd have to do. But first, I want to try to completely remove flash. I remember reading about flash causing rebooting somehow.
Anyone know how to get rid of all traces of flash? And adobe related stuff for that matter.
First off are you using beautiful Widgets? That causes a lot of problems. If that isn't it try installing your apps one by one and see what app it causing the problem.

Not using beautiful widgets, but am using a few standalone ones. Bobclock d3, temp+cpu v2, text battery widget, and that power control one.
I uninstalled all downloaded apps, a couple to a few at a time. I got all the way down to just the basic google ones, nook tweaks, and a couple other ones I can't remember off hand.
At one point the endless reboot problem stopped.
So now I have started reinstalling apps one at a time, rebooting after each install. So far I have gmail, maps, market, nook tweaks, and youtube installed.
I will keep going through my list of apps, one at a time. It's a very time consuming ordeal, but gotta do it I guess.
I'm pretty sure it was nook tweaks. I reinstalled it and checked all the settings, and the rebooting stopped.
Not sure exactly what was wrong with it to be honest.
Anyone have any similar problems with nook tweaks?
Nook Tweaks may be causing my problem...

Apparently YES!
I have been having the same problem, random reboots. Not full boots, just a soft restart. And I dreaded having to actually do a full shutdown or reboot, because it would lead to a bunch of soft restarts. Drove me nuts.
This occurred on my original NC (old partitions, CM7 nightlies, stable and Mirage), and on my replacement one for a bad speaker (refurb has new partitions, Mirage with V6 and PDroid added).
So after reading this, I uninstalled Nook Tweaks and have been thrashing it for the last two days. Hallelujah! No reboots!
I no longer fear doing a shutdown and restart! Stability at last!
After a while, I'll probably reinstall Nook Tweaks to see what happens.
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for your post. Somehow, it never crossed my mind to think that Nook Tweaks might be the culprit.

[Q] My Nook refuses to boot or power on. Help!

I have been running the kanged builds of CM9 for a while, but it began to get bogged down recently and would freeze up almost daily forcing a hard shutdown and reboot.
Sometime yesterday, it began to boot only into recovery no matter what option I tried in the Cyanoboot menu. From there I tried a factory reset and wipe dalvik to hopefully get back into CM9 and here's where the strangeness really kicked off.
Clockwork (which was running off emmc) would freeze in the middle of the factory reset just like it would when CM9 was running (the graphics would degrade slightly upon inspection of the screen).
So, I grabbed my old sdcard with clockwork recovery on it to boot from sd, and I run into the same problem again. Freezing before a wipe, factory reset, or install from sd can complete.
Now, after each failed attempt in clockwork (sd and emmc) it sticks at a backlit black screen and after a hard shutdown refuses to boot (sd or emmc) for about an hour, only to repeat the madness again.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can try from here or familiar with a similar situation?
My sd clockwork version is 3.2.something and I've also tried 3.0.1.something.
UPDATE: For reasons unknown, my Nook seems to be booting regularly as of this morning. However, I am still unable to get a successful flash out of any rom. The closest I've gotten to success is stuck in a boot loop. I think from here I'll likely be able to figure it out, but just as before...
Any help is welcome and appreciated!
I had the same problem with the black screen when trying to install different roms on mine. I just kept clicking the power button and after a few minutes it would kick back on every time.
There is an entire thread specifically on this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699
As far as CM9 I can't help you much there. I would just try to install a different rom, and hope that works.
Thanks!
I had seen that thread, but I thought my experience was a different; either way, I've managed past that problem using a method similar to yours.
If this helps any, I have been trying to to 7.2 RC1 for a while as well, but it will not get me any further than the stuck boot screen same as the CM9.
Have you tried to follow the tread on returning it to stock ?? I would reformat and repartition it and return it to stock ... then make sure it runs. After that I would try to reinstall the new roms ...
Just my 2 cents

[Q] Stuck on boot loop

I used manual nooter over weekend, everything has been working well, but I did have a hard time figuring out soft keys. For reasons I'm nott sure when I tried to use Nook color tools I could only get to BN tools, not the option for all settings which was originally there. I decided to power Nook off an turn back on as that often helps on my Bionic. Well, upon turning on I had the orange menu askin if I wanted to reboot, restore etc. I tried rebooting, was stuck on loop, powered back on and off, did a back up, tried to reboot again and stuck on loop. Do I need to do a complete wipe and start over? SD card seems to be working fine. Any thoughts? Everything else seemed fine, could use play store etc. I did download Firefox last night. thanks.
Updating, through another thread on this forum I went into CWM recovery, did a factory reset, cleared cache, wiped dalvik and rebooted. I think I am getting back to stock, Nook is trying to connect to WiFi, but my office router isn't showing up. Once I get past this, hopefully I can connect somewhere and try Manual Nooter again. Crisis averted, I think.
Last update, sorry for the panicky post. Was able to connect to Wifi, re-register Nook, then reinstall ManualNooter from SD card. Bootloop is gone, CWM recovery worked. After searching deep enough with the posts, everything is working as it should. Thanks for all of the info here and tolerating my Nooby panic.

[Q] Tried to update to cm10, couldn't boot, tried to restore to mnooter or cm7, help?

Hi all. I used to mess with my Nook Color a lot around a year and a half ago but recently was just using it to read and occasionally browse. I'm 99% sure I was working with just a nook which was used with manual nooter, so that I had the Google Play store and Zeam launcher with stock B&N as well. I was having issues with things "not being able to update" so I tried to mess around, only realizing too late that I wasn't really interested in cm10 and wanted to stick with zeam. Since then I've been trying to get back to how I started but I'm failing miserably. I've so far tried wiping/factory resetting my device. Installing cm7 from zip, resetting everything using the guide here and installing 1-4-1 cam oc zip from here and still I fail. I can get into the set up screen, but when the device will not find any wifi signal and then freeze without allowing me to type it in under "other". Honestly I'm not sure what else to do now. I just want my nooted device back -__-.
Please let me know if I can submit any more information that can help solve this problem. Thank you for your time.
I'm literally infinitely stuck staring at this screen.
Managed to fix everything. Used section A15. Enjoy anyone who ran into similar trouble.
