What would need to be done to port this to the Incredible? I'd really like to be able to unlock the phone with the optical joystick (without using a 3rd party app, they don't work consistently).
Thanks for any info.
i would also love this feature in a rom if possible
We had the same idea i just started a thread on the same subject i'll delete mine if i get an answer. I believe I can get this to work I just don't know where to locate the keypad file on the incredible.
The keypad.kl file or are you talking about something else? I tried modifying the keypad.kl file but that doesn't do it.
I was talking about the keypad file i'm trying to edit it also right now.
It won't work. I was able to edit the file and get the settings to stick but my understanding is that file is for physical keyboards. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that it would need to be a kernel update to enable this setting.
well i can verify that editing the keypad file doesn't work. this was my first attempt at editing a file myself i got really excited when I found that other post about remapping the keypad because i hate using the power button. it was fun trying
Did you guys push the file over when you were in your phone or in recovery, if you did it when you are in the phone, nothing will stick.
I did it in recovery, before we even had unrevoked2 tool. I did this: renamed the original file and used cat /sdcard/incrediblec-keypad.kl > /system/usr/keylayout/incrediblec-keypad.kl to create the edited file in the correct directory. The changes stick after a reboot but hitting the joystick doesn't wake the phone.
The joystick seems to be controlled by a kernel setting, not this file.
I'd love to be able to do this, because the front buttons are much more accessible than the power button.
My change definitely took because the power button wouldn't work after I edited the file so I had to revert back to original file.
Wouldn't it be possible to have the power button work normally but also assign the wake function to the optical button as well?
Yes but it would require a kernel setting change. I have no clue how to modify kernels.
hello everybody
i did root my x8 but i cant change “SI” or customization code by root exploer
i alwys give me the message in default prop i try to edit
when try to open text editor it said you cannot edit this file because the file system is read only
and i did try astro file manager didnot work

Well...
In the root explorer, go.to the folder with the prop, then click the upper right corner, there is a button, click it, and try again, cuz that button is giving you permission to edit it, after clicking that button, try to edit the customization code again to update ... have fun
To change the permission, you MUST root your phone, or else that button won't show up!!

and then i go system floder and than build.prop to change it it always gives this massge
this file because the file system is read only
please help thanks alot
thanks very mtch i have figur out thank you
happy xms to xda developers
1 - use Root Explorer to open /system/build.prop file (open in text editor)
2- add " ro.camera.sound.forced=0 " in the bottom of the file (ps: dont include " ")
3- save and exit ,
4- reboot you phone
after booted,
if you want to disable the camera sounds (shot sound and focus sound), just changed the system sound to silent or vibrate.
you will get a no-sounds camera.
I m using ICS and it is working
odlicno!
Awesome. Tnkz!
im running ICS 4.0.4 with Hydrogen mod
AOIK 3.0.28 kernel and have an option under sound to turn camera sound off
Take a look at that option i know resurrection mod has same option
I dont have an ICS device but on my gb device I just renamed (mv) the shutter sound file and there was no more sound when I take pictures... It should be the same for ics. use an adb shell or terminal emulator on the device to "find / -name *.ogg" and you'll figure it out. You will need root to mv the file as well as to use the find command (I am not sure if you need to install bbusybox for find).
Awesome. Thanks!

! EDIT found out why and how. Worked as a charm. Thanks
With ES File Explorer I can browse /system/ and open build.prop in txteditor, but I can't save it (denied) ... any idea why?
ES File Explorer isn't in SuperUses app list ... do I need to add it (and if how)?
! EDIT found out why and how. Worked as a charm. Thanks
Thanks....
If on any stock ICS rom, if you just set your phone to silent or vibrate it will eliminate the these sounds. No need to root or edit the build.prop
If I helped you, please press the Thanks button

Sorry to know that. I didn't have that problem on LP8, but I'm on LP7 nowadays .

Any solution to totally disable the camera sound ?
Search on the forum, found several tips but it's not working on ICS 4.03 (XWLP7).
Thanks.
Just tried this trick, but I'm now stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S2 - GT-I9100" boot screen. Ben there for serveral minutes, trying to remove batterye right now.
Nothing else changed between my previous reboot earlier today than editing this build.prop...
hi guys, i did this and i got bootloop.

So I'm not the only one... Any way to access/edit the build.prop when booting in CWM recovery or download mode?
edit: reflashed with LP8, and this time I did the build.prop edit with a dedicated tool from the market (and not ES Explorer, which uses charsets not correctly interpreted by Unix). Works like a charm

+1
I can confirm that on both xqlp7 and xwlp8 this does not work.
Part of the solution is dumping all sound files you find annoying (shutter, power connect, etc) but the super irritating LOUD focus beep is hardwired in the camera software, so it seems. I wish there was a simple hack for that!
it's working as charmed.. will settings after rom update stay or should I renew settings after every flash procedure?

My device and SDCARD was encypted, got the bootloop and had to use ODIN to get back -lost everything. I too used ES Explorer to edit-
Guess I should read instructions better
anyway- Beware, like CoinCoin says -don't use ES Explorer to edit.
When you're rooted, you can delete or rename the following files:
/system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg
/system/media/audio/ui/camera_focus.ogg
/system/media/audio/ui/VideoRecord.ogg
yeah but I like the camera the way it is (basicly, I like stock things )... I just don't want it to make a noise when the phone is set to vibrate/silent. When it's on general, I'm not bothered by sounds.
The ogg files removal is an edit for all modes, whereas this tweak is just to get it working as it should.
Hello, I have just wasted about a day of my time on this issue.
Problem:
When I root my S4, running Kitkat, or load custom Kitkat ROM - wanamlite in my case, then the auto rotate screen feature stops working.
The problem is not in the HW - the camera app, which rotates labels on the screen based on orientation - kept working through all the trouble.
Details:
- I decided to root my S4, mainly to be able to install xposed/xprivacy and Titanium Backup
- first, I rooted the stock ROM, using the chainfire method. Worked fine
- I did not install custom recovery at this point
- removed few modules in TB
- noticed that the screen auto rotate stopped working
- restored the removed modules in TB, auto rotate still not working
- installed TWRP and Wanamlite. Screen rotation first worked, but after some time ( and my guess is after few reboots ), screen auto rotate failed again.
I was unable to fix this, so I had to go back to stock ROM ( Swiss FNB9 ), to get the phone working again.
Searching on Google, it seems that few of the Samsung devices have this problem of screen auto-rotation not working after rooting....
Before I try rooting again, is this a known problem ? Any fix with a high degree of reliability ?
Thanks for any info, Paul.

Wow, very much appreciated! This worked perfectly for my S4 with KitKat.
Today I noticed my auto screen rotation stopped. I googled around, tried many work-arounds, but none of them helped. A hard reset didn't work, a soft reset didn't work, Bluetooth/GPS/WiFi off didn't help, calibration using an app didn't work, etc.
I rooted my phone (as I had before, but because of the hard reset I had to root it again), installed Root Explorer, and put the libgnustl_shared.so file in the System/lib folder (while mounted R/W). I rebooted and BAM! Auto screen rotation was back again!

That fixed it indeed !! Thanks man ! I had problems pasting the file into that directory but the "root browser" app from the play store could paste it. Then changed permissions, rebooted and ... back is screen rotation !!! Thanks !! :good:

BTW, so it seems the problem is that when you uninstall samsung HUB (which I indeed did), it removes that particular file. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49604191

Hi, Besides hitting the THANKS button, I would like to give following information for other users:
I have PhilzTouch installed and tried to flash the zip file severel times, But everytime after wiping cache part. and dalvik I noticed that nothing changed.
So I did the copy/paste action as described and after rebooting it worked.
Hi All,
I had the same issue when i rooted my device, and lost the rotation and use the method described here to fix the issue.
But after reboot the phone it will keep popping the message " Unfortunately, Samsung Hub has stopped" and it won't go away or let me do anything on the phone, as soon as i hit the OK button it will popup again.
Any possible fix for that, Please !!!
Thank you all.
In English, please...

Can someone help me with this, please... I have no idea what this means.
1) I downloaded the file
2) The instructions say to move the libgnustl_shared.so file into System>>Lib. When I download the file, libgnustl_shared.so is already in a folder called System>Lib...
3) Someone else said to FLASH via recover or something?? What does that mean? Can someone explain this in straightfoward terms? Thank you.
In that case, you should try to replace the existing file with the new one.
You just need to set up the parameters of the file (permissions into rw r r) as explained before. You can do it with ES Explorer for instance.
No need to do something else, just reboot.

changin permission parameters for getting screen rotation
OK, easy, my first question was and has been "how to change the permissions".
And alone, not being an Android Geek, I succeeded !!!
First use Root Explorer, with it copy and paste (or move) the " libgnustl_shared.so" file in the "\system\lib" directory.
Once it's done (always with Root Explorer) apply a finger on this new file, a menu appears and choose "Permissions". Then there, keep only Read on the three lines, and only Write on the first line. Then click on OK.
And reboot your system.
Amazing, it's working, like the first day and before you rooted it...
Thanks again for your solution.
thanks
works great on i9505 kitkat. don't forget to reboot
no permission
im getting this when i try to do it,
"changing permissions was not successful. please note that some file systems do not allow permission changes"
anyone know how to get around this??
cheers
I'm running the hyperdrive rom and would like to change the menu button to the recent apps button, and the longpress home to google now like S5. I found an xposed module that does this but only for the note 3. Anyone have a solution for this?

I can change the menu key to recent apps but not sure about longpress home.
Using a root File Explorer open generic.kl in system/user/keylayout with a text editor.
Go to key 139 and replace 'MENU' with 'APP_SWITCH'. Reboot and you're done.
For google now it should just be a matter of finding the appropriate key.

Thanks for getting me in the right direction here. However, when I alter the generic.kl file at all, both capacitive buttons quit working after a reboot. I tried replacing the altered file with a backup i made, rebooted, and they still don't work. The only way to restore function of the buttons is to reflash the rom. Any idea as to why? This seemed like an easy change.... (also tried editing the file via notepad++ on the pc with the same result)

What file explorer are you using? ES explorer?
After editing and especially if you're pasting in a back up you need to make sure the files permissions are set to rw-r--r--
I personally used the text editor from Rom Tool Box Lite . Make sure there aren't any extra spaces and there should be no # in front of the key.
I just remapped and put them back to normal a few times and I'm not having any problems.
Let me know how you get on.

All good, glad you got it sorted.
Another option is home2shortcut it uses double tap instead of long press, just tried it for kicks and it works really well, quite snappy
