Hi. i hope every single Note owner and user here either would have just flashed to the latest official ics rom by now or would be thinking of flashing to this rom.
well i accept that i am not a tech master. but as i love to tinker with these tech gadgets alot and i keep on changing my roms just to check
here is just a minor addition to those who are somewhat COMPLETLY unaware of the flashing or are afraid to flash to this official rom especially after that article where it was advised not to flash the Leaked ICS Roms.
well i had the Chrack ROM v18 the GB rom and i downloaded this official rom. i thought to just flash to this official rom the XXLPY and i just did that. but what happened was i was stuck at the samsung logo. i got so tensed i thought my phone might have been bricked or something. (the actual reason was i was SUPER HYPER and SUPER EXCITED about the official ICS )
i then quickly flashed my phone again to XXKL3 stock gingerbread rom. the same issue remained. i was again stuck at the boot animation. i was again so worried
i then thought to check the recovery mode. i did that and that worked and God i was So relieved i cant tell u guys
then i just flashed the XXLPY simply using the odin and it was flashed in no time with no issues!
so here are my suggestion to those who want to flash this official rom:
1- if u currently have custom gingerbread rom, u BETTER first flash to stock ROM!
2- DONT panic like me while flashing is going on! it WILL take some time!
3- wipe the dalvik cache and u will be good to go!
4- it would be better to do a factory reset after the flashing is done.
i know almost everyone here would be knowing that all already but as i already said the reason of this post is not for the experts here! its for those who get confused and panic a lot while deciding or during the flashing! i hope moderators would let my thread stay here for the newbies

You could have just wiped and I bet you would have been out of the boot loop
If you hard brick, you won't even see the Samsung logo (ASK CHASMODO AS HE MUST BE HERE TOO SOMEWHERE ). As long as the logo is seen there is nothing to worry about.
curious.....was your first two 'flash' attempts via recovery or via odin?
I just flashed Alba coming from Stunner with no problems.....
Yeah all you needed to do was wipe in recovery after flashing

no. ive had samsung Wave, samsung galaxy s, galaxy nexus galaxy s2 and now galaxy note. ive been aware of the flashing procedure and i have done ALOT of flashing!

If you want to upgrade without rooting its fairly simple.
Assuming you have a STOCK ROM -
Just connect to PC Odin and Flash the update. Nothing else to be done.
Nothing at all.
The confusion starts the moment you want to update with root intact.

the first two attempts were using odin. i always flash stock roms using odin. i dont know if there is a method of flashing stock roms using recovery or whatever. and i am not that experienced like some of the guys like here but assuming i am a finance and accounts related person, i guess what i know about flashing and stuff like that is more than enough for me.... lol

I'm sorry. I SWEAR I read tons of threads but things still aren't clear to me.
ICS leaks seem to possibly brick the Note.
But there are several threads with official ICS firmwares for the Note (ex: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646088)
Can I use the official ICS firmware to upgrade my Note? Or should I wait a bit more?

From what I understand, you should be fine with official ICS as long as you don't do factory/data reset with the stock kernel. What are you using now?

Well I upgraded my Note and it is completely fine, my friend with a Note as well hasn't told me about his phone being bricked either. But I'm not sure about all the others though, since mine is the Hong Kong official one, and I never use the leaks so they don't really bother me.

When you say factory reset you mean going into settings and then "data factory reset"? I normally do that after a huge update and format my SD card too. So that is a no no on ICS?

Bull****. I have tried to do wipe from CWM and MobileOdin over and over again more than 15 times at ICS leaks and ICS stocks and custom kernels and custom ROMs. Never got any problem.

You might want to read the stickies in this forum regarding the fact that it's not an issue that effects all users. But it effects some by bricking their phones.
Along with the advice to not tell others that the problem doesn't exist based on your experience.

Please don't tell others that all N7000 have problems with wiping on ICS roms. I never saw anyone who have this strange wipe "problem".

How can you say that man,,,thr are so many ppl on Xda here that are reporting to have bricked thr devices......or are you saying that as long as you r not rooted , this bricking thing just wudn't happen?

maybe you are lucky to have an unaffected chip ,but 99.9% of users have a known damaged chip fw.
I suggest you go read the sticky in which it says that some people have wiped 19 times and got a full brick on the 20th attempt ,some even more .
I myself have wiped once safely ,but the second wipe made the emmc go nuts ,luckily however it was not fully dead ,and I restored it ,barely .
besides ,samsung and Google have both confirmed this bug ,so who are you to state otherwise?!!

The source of the problem has been found and confirmed...how can people still be ignorant and spread bad advice.
As Mr.change said above, yes there is a problem even with official ICS, you may get lucky but you will run into a problem eventually if you keep wiping data/factory reset with affected ICS kernels...so best not to do so.
What would be the alternative to a factory reset then? I'm waiting to receive a new Note and intend to install stock ICS straight away but I worry that I'll mess up my first ever Android install and have to start again. Could you re.install the update without a wipe?

if you are new to this then I would advise that you stay way from it till you learn your way around the basics of flashing using PC ODIN ,mobile ODIN ,and recovery.
then flash stock ICS with a safe custom kernels and you should be safe.
besides ,samsung stock ICS isn't that different from GB ,same look and same performance . you'd want to install CM9 to get a taste of true ICS.
so like I said ,take your time ,bricking your new shinny phone can be devastating .

The problem is you don't know if you will hit the problem until you find out the hard way.
Once you've hit the problem there is no recovery.
So stop telling everyone that they are safe because you got lucky.
People who want to run ICS should use a kernel that has a safe configuration (MMC_CAP_ERASE removed from drivers/mmc/host/mshci.c) - This includes, but is not necessarily limited to (check the kernel's info) the CM9 included kernel, Hardcore's Speedmod ICS, and Franco.kernel r3 and above. Be sure to verify that you're running a safe kernel with CPUSpy before dropping into recovery - a few people had Mobile Odin fail to flash a safe kernel when they were on a dangerous one and then bricked because they didn't verify.

What do u mean..? doing a factory reset is a common thing.. who on this earth doesn't do a factory data reset at all on their phone.. and if u ask me we must do a factory reset after updating to a new rom.
Pity on samsung.. their official builds destroy the phone. I can't believe.. how they released it without testing.. and why didnt the stop their ****ty ics update from being live till now..

I just wanted to say I bought this device two days ago and I am so very happy with it.
I had a Xperia Pro and a Galaxy S but decided to go "big"
And I am glad I did.
The only small downside is that it seems to be so hard to root this one. I have not found any easy way as with for example Xperia Pro.
I am very pleased with the stock rom but I really need to get those bloatware out...but I dont want to flash a rom just to get root.
Well anyway, happy for bying this and I hope it continues to be as fast and nice.
So to others thinking of buying, just do it.....

hey flash speedmod kernel via pc odin and you will have a root access and a yellow triangle, wich can be removed via remove yellow traingle if you are on ics.
ps I recomment kingdroid 4.3 rom and speedmod kernel.
after you got clockworkmod recovery flash abyss 4.2 reboot recovery run jbdroid script flash kingdroid 4.3 rom with cf root kernel after aht flash speedmod k3-7
if you have any question use the search!!!!!!!!!
If u r on ICS, DO NOT DO A FACTORY RESET/WIPE. Note ICS kernwl has a brick bug.
Speedmod kernels and a few other custom kernels have a work around to the bruck bug.

As long as you do not perform a factory wipe/reset, ICS is quite good.
I myself have fallen victim to the eMMC brick bug. I got it repaired under warranty. Rooted as per Doc K's guide and flashed SpeedMod kernel. I am on it since about a month now. Running smooth.
Remember always... any time you want to wipe, flash a stock GB rom, perform a wipe and ttgen upgrade to ICS. That is 100% safe. DIRECT WIPE FROM ICS IS 100% DANGEROUS.
Thank you all for so good advices. I am on GB and plan to stay there until a safe version comes from Samsung or any of all excellent developers here.
Oh I am used to search no worries.
Probably I will end up with flashing rom soon. But I feel this phone is magic.

Flash stunner with thor kernel. It's aokp based. No bloatware, no bull****.
Fully costumizable.
You will love it.
It also has tablet mode.
Little getting used to but with this big screen a must have.
Hardbrick issue is gone with this rom.

Welcome! I recommend ParanoidAndroid, the hybrid phone/tablet mode is really something. If you dont care for the samsung apps go ahead and flash a custom rom, just make a backup of your original incase you ever need to return your phone

Galaxy Note N7000.
Was running stock ICS-ROM Samsung.
Always wanted to install and use a custom ROM but was always afraid of BRICKS..
But yesterday ended up being sucessfully running CM9.
Steps I undertook were as follows:
1. Installed Samsung Kies.
2. Check for update from Samsung Kies and updated Kies.
3. Connected my phone to Kies and checked if Kies detected the phone properly.
After sucess, exit Kies.
4. Downloaded PC Odin from this link

5. Download pre rooted GingerBread ROM
SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip (thx dr.ketan)

8. Connect Download mode note to PC
9. PC odin ID:COM turns yellow:
(ALL THE BEST NOW)
10. In PC ODIN
Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time ---> Ticked
Others --> Unticked
10. Click PDA and select the SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip you had downloaded.
Click start.
Wait for 10minutes.
Your phone will restart.
11. WOW..!!! now ur on a GB Rom
And its a safe kernel
Now you can play around
Plus already rooted
12. Now to get this GB Rom working
go to recovery mode (vol up + home + power)
clean dalvik cache and wipe data and factory reset
13. Time to install CM9
14. Download
CM9 latest nightly:

15. Copy these 2 files in the internal SD card anywhere (do not rename)
16. Reboot into recovery mode:

18. DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET
19. Reboot
And wow..
Enter the world of custom ROMS

Yes, you can follow this guide safely. Actually, this is the best guide I've seen so far, I wish I had this one the moment I wanted to start messing around with my phone because I spent more than 48 hours total reading and reading and getting more confused each time.

Before Galaxy Note, I used to rock HTC Wildfire and didn't wanted to mess around with custom roms because it was just low-end device. Third-party launchers did the job for me when it comes to customization.
When I bought Galaxy Note, I was looking forward to flashing Cyanogenmod or maybe something different (I like Paranoid Android rom and the hybrid mode). I was very disappointed to see that there is a brick bug.
Even though I'm a IT engineer and I have been using computers since Commodore 64, I don't have experience in flashing custom roms so this post is very useful if it's the best way to do it.
Do I have to flash different stock GB before rooting, because I have XXLA6 kernel (baseband: xxla4) and I believe that this version is not directly rootable? Correct me if i'm wrong?
What is the best way to return from custom rom (ie. CM9) to stock GB?
In fact, I've been reading for a good amount of time today but there is just too much information, so sorry for the noobish questions.
I installed rom before 2 days and had similar doubts.

CyanogenMod 9 is based on ICS, CM7 is based on Gingerbread. There wasn't a CM8 because Google never released the source code for Honeycomb.
And what you need is a safe kernel, because the kernel is what sends a erase command to a chip inside the phone and that's when you brick it (I think). That happens when you do a factory reset.
Now, what I always do when I want to change ROMS is to use AbbysNote 4.2 as a safe GB kernel so I can then flash the ROM/Kernel of my choice.

So let's say you want to go from CM9 to LiquidSmooth (or pretty much any other), which is the one I use now:
You go to CWM recovery, from there you flash AbyssNote.
Once the flashing is completed, you DO NOT exit CWM, instead you go to "Advanced" and then "Reboot to Recovery" so the phone will restart but it will go directly to CWM again, but now with AbyssNote installed.
AbyssNote has a TOUCH based recovery, so it is easier to use. Don't use the physical power and volume buttons to navigate.
From there you can safely do a factory reset, format cache, format Dalvik, flash a new ROM and Kernel.
AbyssNote will then disappear because it will be overwritten by the new Kernel of your choice. So every time I want to change to a new ROM, I repeat the steps above I haven't had any problems whatsoever.
I hope I'm right with my technicalities, but the procedures the OP and I describe are safe to try as long you follow the exact instructions, so before you try anything, read and re-read and you will be just fine.

Thanks for this great guide! I haven't gotten my Note yet as I just ordered it yesterday but I have been lurking around the forums already and trying to understand how flashing roms and kernels works around here. Like someone already said before some of the guides / threads are 'a little' confusing for newcomers. I was really confused with the brick bug that people were writing about. This thread clarified things a lot for me and I believe it will help many more Note-newbies!
So, new Note community member reporting to duty here! :highfive: It's gonna be pretty neat upgrade considering from what phone I come from. Well, the Huawei at least was great step stone to android world gotta admit. I just got somewhat bored with the not so great custom scene.

One more question for you. Does flashing abyss kernel bring yellow triangle and raise binary counter? I've heard on one of Zedomax's channels on youtube that he recommends flashing this kernel whenever you need to move from one ROM to another.

Dont worry about AbyssNote, is safe in both respects. That's the one I always use to do anything that is flashing related.
If, for some reason, you start seeing that dreaded triangle at boot, you can use TriangleAway from Chainfire on Google Play.

Thanks bro, I appreciate the effort to answer these noobish questions.
I will stay on CM9 (and CM10 when it comes) as long as is stable to use it as a daily driver. I don't like the TW interface and I don't need all that S-Pen stuff and pressure sensitivity. Apps from the Play Store are enough for me (Papyrus for example) so there's no need to stay on stock rom.

I have the brickbug firmware also. So am I correct in assuming that if I follow these directions and flash a different GB rom that I will be okay?
Will flashing this India GB rom change my kernel to a more stable one?
And if I flash this India GB rom will it be able to update to ICS through Kies or OTA?
I'm not new to flashing as I used to rom my EVO a lot... I just haven't done it in about a year and this brickbug mess has me standoff-ish.

If you are on GB already, you just have to root the ROM and flash CWM because the brick bug is present only on ICS kernels. 99% sure.
There are some GB Stock ROMs that you cannot root directly, so it depends.
OTA updates from Samsung to ICS I'm not sure, you should ask someone else. When I got my Note it already had ICS, so I never did an OTA update. I don't use Kies at all.
I was very weary at first too, but with the instructions above you will be fine.

I've followed the guide from OP and now I'm rockin' CM9! No problems at all.
My content on the internal memory was intact (apps data, games data, etc), it's all there and I've flashed Indian ROM and then CM9. Have I made a mistake or what?
I've always been happy with Checkrom. My previous ROM only lasted 4 hours, so when I saw V7 coming out I immediately flashed it.
After I succesfully flashed it I found out that the kitchenpro app didn't work and later I read that development was stopped. Not even swype which was part of the original samsung.
I now want to flash another ROM, but am afraid to follow the wrong procedure and brick it. It seems I can't even do a factory reset without the risk of bricking it.
I will never flash a checkrom product again.
Can I go into recovery and just flash wanamlite? Does it even work, as it's the standard recovery and not the full CWM?
No (extra) risk of bricking it?
I would appreciate a straightforward answer...

Look at the forum on www.checkrom.com. The instructions of flashing a kernel through Odin and a new rom are written in the V7-section.

Simply flash a safe kernel i.e. siyah kernel, reboot in to recovery and flash a rom(might want to do a full wipe beforehand) or restore a backup.

First off, wise decision...
With respect to getting out of this, you want to flash a 4.0.3 based ROM. Don't go for a 4.0.4 based one quite yet, regardless of recovery type, if you're after a quick and safe fix.
You want to flash Siyah Kernel first, and then flash the ROM from there.
Siyah Kernel can be flashed via ODIN (flash the TAR as a PDA file).
Then go about your procedure to flash as usual. As above I'll re-iterate, don't flash a 4.0.4 based ROM yet (LQ5 or LQM I believe), as these are not always 100% safe in all scenarios.
You're much better to stick away from these for now.
Again, I have no idea why "developers" are going about releasing ROMs which are based on these kernels, without clear and noticeable warnings about what people are getting into...
Oh well... Hope it goes well, just follow this and you'll be fine.

The last time I used Odin was when I bought my SG2. Since then I flashed all my different ROMs with CWM.
Although I'm glad I'm not using checkrom anymore and never will because of the way they stopped their development I do have to admit it had more than decent battery life (their 4.04 version).
I‘m currently on wanamlite and after 2 hours I'm already on 60% :-(
I used to have cyanogenmod 7 on my HTC HD2?
It might be an idea to try 9 or 10

Very bad form closing the threads when quite a number of people had flashed the new checkrom with the promise of a fix. They could have at least fixed the kernal issue rather than just abandoning it. Very disappointed. Going to try to flash the kernal via ODIN if I can remember even how!
Not a Dev, but not a Noob, either. Formerly had a SGH-i897 Galaxy S for 3 years and flashed like crazy on it, while transitioning from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread to ICS to Jellybean, mostly using the fine offerings from the AOCP Collective folks. While familiar with Odin, CWM was my usual go-to utility.
Upgraded recently to a SGH-i337 Galaxy S4. Must have owned it for two, maybe three hours, before I rooted it with MotoChopper. This allowed me to re-install Titanium Backup. I left it as merely rooted, while I read up on CWM and some new-fangled thing called TWRP, which I wanted to get installed before casting about for a new ROM. (At the time, AOCP did not have an offering here, or it would have been a no-brainer for me.)
One morning, I turned on the phone and noticed it was doing an OTA update. . . . . . . . .
Mildly curious, I logged onto XDA to read what the community thought about the update, only to discover that I had missed all the dire warnings by a day and my (now) version I337UCUAMF3 ROM had it's boot-loaders locked from a blown Q-Fuse, courtesy of Samsung and AT&T.
Took me a week before I found the rooting solution from jortex, but thankfully, I'm now rooted again.
This background now leads to my questions:
I have ROM Manager Premium (from previous purchase) but have not installed it.
I was aware on my previous SGH-i897 that mixing the Gingerbread and Jellybean boot loaders was like, a Bad Thing when flashing ROMs and would promptly brick the phone.
Does CWM require the ability to load from a boot loader?
I know it creates an update.zip file to restore the original ROM, and usually does so by using whatever ROM is installed at the time.
So wouldn't it just create an update based on the I337UCUAMF3 ROM?
Even if I can't flash new ROMs (unless or until somebody comes up with a Q-Fuse Fix) couldn't I at least have all the recovery and .zip flashing of apps and cache clearing menu choices available to me from CWM?
Or would the act of just installing CWM on a I337UCUAMF3 ROM immediately brick my phone?
In Other Words, how close can I dance to the water's edge?
Been to the ROM Manager web site and they claim I can do any thing at any time.
(Easy for them to say: It ain't THEIR phones!)
Been searching these threads and can't come up with anything explicitly stating yea or nay.
So far, I have been happy enough with the TW stock ROM, but I always felt better being able to boot to recovery to fix things, on those few occasions I got just a leeeeeetle too close to the Bleeding Edge!
What is the consensus out there?
Will CWM 6.0.3.6 bork a I337UCUAMF3? Yes or no?

It sure could brick the phone, the only thing you can do at the moment is root. I have seen a couple people try running a recovery on it, and it required a jtag service to restore the device.

This phone is far different from the Captivate. There is no flashing anything on MF3. Basically you are waiting for a work around if that is even possible.
