Burn-in, image retention, colors degrading with time my god there are so many issues with SAMOLED screens I personally dont feel that super amazing contrast is worth all that.
It seems with the galaxy S and nexus S the problems werent as huge as they have become with the SGS2, galaxy note and galaxy nexus. With an LCD phone if there is a problem it will be manufacturing problem and not something that would develop after several months.
It seems with every new generation of SAMOLED screen the image quality is getting better but the problems are getting worse. LCD's on the other hand are only getting better with no problems.
I think if samsung is unable to improve on the SAMOLED tech then they should just suspend it for now until they can improve it. Samsung makes the beautiful LCD on my nexus S, samsung also provides HTC with the screen of the HTC one X which is widely regarded as the best smartphone screen. Samsung also makes the screen of the ipad 3. Samsung obviously knows how to make an LCD thats better than the competition if they were to make one for their own flagship.
So what is your opinion on the matter?

Alright, first of all, it's not amoled's problem. it is the pentile technology. it lowers the screen res because it shares sub pixels. However, the galaxy s ii uses AMOLED PLUS, the PLUS means it's like LCD, uses RGB layout, with superb colour contrast along with high res graphics, no pentile ruining the details. so just be patient until AMOLED HD PLUS comes out. It will have: High Res, No pentile, High Contrast. Believe me, it will be 100x better than the One X.

But this doesn't sort out (mainly):
-Unnatural colours which need severe and constant attention as individual OLED lifetimes progress
-Strong possibility of burn in and an effectively similar effect (due to OLED lifetimes as above)
-Generally weak outdoors
I'm not sold on either path for the long term, but there is no denying LCDs in the current day have blown past practically all of their disadvantages. The only benefit i see of OLED technology in the foreseeable future is the ability to produce a "true" black (and lower power consumption as a result). While this is an awesome benefit, there is more far bad than good beyond this.
I'm unsure how far engineering can take OLEDs though. If we're hitting the peak of the bell curve i'd have to agree with the OP. Otherwise, competition and choice is good.
After using a samoled screen I could NEVER go back to the washed out colors of a standard led. I have yet to see any type of burn in on my screen. 90% of it's life will be with screen off anyway so really who cares.

This tech of display was a junk which has used on benq-Siemens mobile phone five years ago.
However, Samsung bought this from someone who develop this screen and keeping develop until now. The problems still don't fix:thumbdown::thumbdown:
In my eyes, Samoled looks really gorgeous and can't live without it. But that's just my opinion.

No need to go that far, the i9023's SC-LCD is a stunning looking display. My Nexus S easily stands its ground next to my brothers new GNex (which happily doesn't have strong yellow/green tints stock, which makes me like his more than most OLEDs). Considering that it is close, the only benefit his has is definitely the black contrast (big benefit no doubt). Nothing else is particularly noteworthy above the other.
But i can leave my screen on all day knowing it will be just as pretty as always.
Heck even the nexus S i9023 has such a great LCD in my opinion. The colors are more saturated than an iphone 4 but not so much as SAMOLED which in my opinion is the best balance. It's also so visibly sharper and much better whites. If nexus S had retina pixel density then the SC-LCD could match the one X to be honest.
The advantages of SAMOLED are,
Pure blacks
Fastest response time
A smaller footprint which helps in making phones lighter and thinner
Now to me only the first one is a major advantage. But is it worth all the problems? I really dont think so.

Yes exactly when I first used the gnexus I thought it's going to blow away the display on my nexus S but it really didnt. I preferred the colors on nexus S and it was also visibly brighter at full brightness.
The gnexus does destroy it in black level but then the nexus S LCD does the same to the gnexus when you compare whites, they were simply horrible on the gnexus. I am really surprised google went with a white background in the messaging app, it not only looks bad on the gnexus but would kill battery as well.

Here in the states it is rare to see people with a nexus period. Most that you do see are the sprints. Chances of a 9023 are basically nil.
But yeah if you know someone with a phone that has a good LCD check it out. Or just go down to the store and look. Better yet wait till sprint stores in the us put its version on HTC one x on display. Use that side by side with gnex
That last part was to the person that said LCD sucks. Not harbb
I find it really interesting that most of the people commenting in the thread seem to prefer LCD, but the poll dominates for SAMOLED.
Good point albundy, and i know what you were saying I've never actually seen an i9020A/T/4G myself so i can't compare them to the GNex and i can't remember the last time i saw an SGS around here.
As the poll is worded quite nicely, i think i'll actually vote for once. Too many polls are black and white, nicely played Gambler.
edit: Polls are just that, polls. Just as many people said cpuidle saved more battery than deep idle (i think for quite a while it was more in favor of cpuidle). Look at how that turned out
Back when I would edit photos on my nexus. I really wanted the exact right shade for my eyes on the picture.
Well after I edited the photo on my nexus, upload it to Book it was diffdnt

Guys, I had a Nexus S i9023 (LCD), and my dad has a i9020T (samoled), and all i can say is that I wish I had his phone... the colors look MUCH MUCH MUCH nicer on a Samoled man!!!!!!!
Coming from a G2, the colors on the NS look much nicer. My phone has a minor blue line where the status bar is, but you really can't see it unless you concentrate on that area. The only reason I saw it was because of some friggin' super white background on some webpage
even if they look nicer they are still fake.
fake is not cool.

I’m not trying to upset anyone here but I have to be honest about my first thoughts on the Galaxy screen. Tonight I stopped by a T-Mobile store and with my iPhone 4G and HTC Evo, I tried out the T-Mobile Vibrant. I had all 3 phones on, side by side and I really was not too impressed with the SGS screen due mostly to that awful screen door matrix.
When I held the SGS about 6 inches away from my eyes, I could clearly see the pixel grid (or whatever it’s called) and was just put off by it. I can honestly say that I feel the best looking screen is the iPhone’s without a doubt and the Evo comes in 2nd. The iPhone’s small screen is a pretty big problem for me but now I’m just not sure which device to stick with.
Am I really the only one who can see the matrix and is bothered by this??? I really wanted to just fall hard for this phone on first contact and I could have. It just drives me crazy that all 3 phones have really nice features and I’d gladly pay double if not triple to have the best of all 3 devices in one device………
You're right, the pixels do annoy me a little, only coz I'm a perfectionist...
The colours are beautiful though; and in normal use I never notice the pixels...

So I'm assuming you just got used to after a while? I was looking at the notification bar and the battery and other icons seemed to look kind of low res to me. I guess this is what people are talking about when they say it has larger pixels.

Not trying to be annoying, but you only see the pixels, because steve told you so.
I saw the pixels too, because steve told me to look at them, would have never looked if iphone 4's dpi wasn't so hyped.
I think the screen is very much amazing with full brightness, hope you checked that the one in the store was set to 100% brightness too and not just focus on the pixels.
Next time try to do something real with the phone, like watch youtube HD and then do the comparison to iPhone and you will be all happy again.
Good luck

I see what you're saying but I guess I'm not really talking about the pixels but rather the type of screen used that gives that screen door look. Remember, I stated that I still have no issues with the Evo screen which I think looks much better in person than it does in photos online compared to the SGS screen.
On the other hand, if you habitually hold your phone at 6" from your face, you should probably consult an optometrist
In practice, the pixels are indistinguishable from those of the EVO, or of the iPhone 3Gs. But, the overall experience is noticeably richer with the Super AMOLED, IMO.
The screen is the biggest thing this phone has going for it, and why I've decided to stick with it.
I don't think you were seeing the sub pixel's pentile pattern. Sub pixels on any device are way too small to see; a camera macro is needed to see them, and you need to press your lense against the screen itself.
The thing is, it had the same leaf and water live wallpaper that my Evo has and yet I could see that grid on it and not the Evo. 6 inches btw' was just to get closer because I thought I started to notice something.
I own the SGS and ive used a Iphone4 a few times, even though the res did look a little sharper, side by side you would have to be really picky to care, the colour of the SGS is much more noticable than the slight res difference.
The iphone4 just looked bland to me.
I have a iphone 3g for work as well, not as fast as the 3gs, but after owning the SGS for nearly 2 weeks i hate having to use the iphone.
I'm used to the pentile matrix since it was also on my Nexus One.
It definitely can give a rough looking edge on some elements but not enough to make me consider ditching the phone even for a moment.
I certainly cannot see the pentile matrix in photos and videos nor in games.
If pentile goes with denser pixels (say 1280x720) I don't think you'd notice it at all on a 4" screen, but it brings the benefits of increased battery life (though this may be marginal?)
Anyway, it can be seen but it really doesn't bother me personally.

So you're saying that after sometime, one could get used to the screen and no longer notice the matrix? Unless of course Morpheus comes knocking to wake us up.
Now everyone see the pixel.. because Steve said to watch it!
The screen is probably a net downside to the phone for me - high contrast ratio is great, but I'd sooner give that up than compromise on true resolution and sharpness from the PenTile matrix. It seems I'm in a minority with that opinion!
Unfortunately there's no real choice unless I want to start compromising on the rest of the hardware instead. The iPhone does send to set trends, for better or worse, and I do hope the iPhone 4 starts one for higher DPI phones. Going from QVGA to VGA was immediately a massive improvement.
A little real life perspective here would be nice. 4" screen with 480x800 pixel resolution is one of the highest out there already.
I tend to use my phone from about 18" away, so I care what the screen looks like, not the individual pixels. Plus my Sammy can update those pixels 3x faster than the Evo.

Exactly. The monstrous hardware behind the SGS is the real deal here. Even if this "pixelated screen" is a big deal for some people (definitely not my case...), the fluidity, contrast ratio, brightness and colors make more then up for it.
Six inches from your face??! Dude i cant even focus that close. The screen is awesome end of discussion.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
When putting it very close to my face, yes, i can see the PenTile matrix.
But that's complete nonsense- it's visible only if you search for it and the screen is more than sharp enough for reading even small sized text in the browser.
On the other hand, i enjoy the true blacks and amazing colors the screen gives.
The iPhone 4 just can't compare, and while watching videos/playing games/taking or viewing pictures etc. that is a much more important factor.
I won't ever give away better color for some more PPI.
I really like hi-res panels (so much that I bought in 2003 a dell laptop with a 15.4 1920x1200 screen!), but I can assure you that the i9000 res will not be a problem. Of course I would have loved a higher RES - (and 2ghz and and and) but I think that the res is fine for reasonable distance viewing.
I think the real benefit of the screen are the colors, the contrast and the size. After some point the resolution is already good enough that you start focusing on other parameters as well.

HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio
New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One
Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer. The SLCD display offers an exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.
"HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. "The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC's current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance."
SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology that offers improved performance from earlier LCD panels including approximately five times better power management. SLCDs also offer an enhanced viewing experience with wider viewing angles that are enabled by Sony's new VSPEC III™ technology.

Hope Sony is NOT going the pentile matrix way, as this is not exclusive to amoleds...
i'm wondering whether the new screen uses a better digitizer for multi touch? a multi touch Vis test would be good on a Super LCD nexus one.

The point is over saturation; ie: things look over saturated. However personally I have not found it to be a problem, and I typically notice these sorts of things being a photographer. But I have different devices for different scopes of work, and they don't all have to be equivalent. I don't have to have "the best" camera in my phone, my work monitor doesn't have to be perfectly calibrated (okay, so it is, I hate bad colours..)
And Pentile sucks. Everything looks dithered. I'm sure it's not exclusive to AMOLED but I can't imagine the purpose of it anywhere else? The main purpose, as I understand it, is to drive most of the luminance from the emitters which have longer life.
exactly. the point is that the colors on amoleds, especially reds and orange colors, are way too saturated. I hate the color reproduction on the nexus one.
And PenTiles are the WORST invention ever, the dithered look distracts the eyes, especially when reading a lot of text. The display is my main complaint woth the nexus one, other than that im completely happy. (ok the stock homescreens are laggy as hell even on android 2.2, but at least there are some replacement apps available).

Agree with the PenTile display! For some reason so few people realize just how ****ty it is. I remember commenting on Engadget saying how ****ty it looks compared to my Touch Pro 2 and people just called me a troll even though I owned both devices.
My honest first opinion of my Nexus One after turning it on is "Wow, this screen sucks!" But I kept it despite its ****ty screen and lack of keyboard because I love my 1GHz processor.
Yea I'm curious how this will affect existing users. Sounds like they are trying to use cheaper screens to deepen their pockets, but I'm all for it if the quality is better or on par of our existing screens.... especially if it fixes the multitouch bugs.
if someone got a replacement Nexus One with Super LCD, then could you please test multi touch with MultiTouch Vis Test? thanks

Yeah, sadly there are many people which don't see this problem and therefore it seems like this cheap approach is paying off for the manufacturers. Even the Touch Diamond 2 had a far better WVGA Display (LCD).
I also had an motorola milestone (droid) testdevice and the screen on the milestone just kills the n1 screen. I can literally read the text on fully zoomed out webpages on the milestone, while on the n1 i can't see the text clearly at all.
The problem is: People who never witnessed a better WVGA screen will be happy as the AMOLED Pentile screens are at least better then old HVGA screens. But anybody who got to experience WVGA on an LCD without Pentile Matrix garbage will know that the difference ist huge.
So would HTC potentially replace existing n1's displays with the SLCD if they are under warranty.

Lcd and digitizer are separate pieces of hardware, you won't be seeing it upgraded.
What is wrong with your guys that everything turns into a flame fest over something like a display???
Can't you read? The "marketing/promotional" release stated it is better. Therefore, it must be true
i would like to know how SLCD is more efficient battery power. did they mean more efficient over traditional LCD, or more efficient over AMOLED? i'm assuming over LCD.
i know the pentile problems and all, but i honestly still dont mind it. i've seen the EVO and droid and how crisp they look, but it just isnt a huge difference for me. i like the over saturate colors of amoled!
Hi all, long time lurker (I had an MDA from T-Mobile a longgg time ago), first post for years
I really want a Nexus S, and I went to Best Buy today, and the screen just looked terrible; text looked significantly worse than the iPhone 4 and Moto's Droids. Very fuzzy, very obvious pixels. I felt the same way looking at the Galaxy S in the Verizon store. The only thing that I liked was the black depth.
I've seen people claim the Super AMOLED screen is to blame, but then I've also read reviews who say it looks great. I can't imagine that these people who like the screen could not have seen what I did, unless they really needed glasses.
However, both of them had screen protectors applied, which I could believe mucks up the PenTile rendering and makes the screens look worse than they are.
How are other peoples' Nexus S/Galaxy S? Is it just the protector? Is it me, or have other people noticed the same thing?
It bums me out, because I was super hyped for a Nexus (I like that it's open, that it plays well with all the Google services I use), but it didn't make me love it the same way the iPhone 4 wants you to love it, and it's mostly due to the screen.

I love this screen, chances are it is a poorly applied screen protector
Text just doesn't look as, sharp as the Droid or iPhone 4 because they have lcd screens with full 3 color pixels per full pixel. Amoled screens do not, they use pentile sub pixel layout which alternates green and blue sub pixels effectively sharing between pixels. It's a cheaper way to manufacture the more expensive amoled technology. But the cost is less sharp text. Nothing you can do about it.

...and after two replies, we get one which loves the screen and one which says it's just the way it is! I don't have any wish to get a phone that plays videos nicely... I spend all my time using Google Reader, Gmail and browsing.
As a point of reference, I would say the text and pixel spacing both looked worse than my first generation iPod Touch. I could believe the color rendering was better.
I'd really like a good way of finding out if it was just a dodgy screen protector in both stores without dropping 530 bucks at Best Buy then instantly returning it if it isn't any better.
the SAMOLED screen is what keeps me coming back to yet another Samsung phone, even though their product quality is HORRIBLE! (GPS / Internal SD)
the SAMOLED screen is way too addictive, that tells you much about the screen, it's like having 1080p in your phone!
colors are the best in the market, and there's nothing that can match up to a SAMOLED crispy display and vivid color
yes, it is true it does suck up a lot of power when you use it at the NICE settings.
and yes, SAMOLED is move lively than the Restina Display of the iphone
I would judge the SAMOLED screen on the Galaxy S series to be more vibrant, but the LCD on the iPhone is unparalleled in its resolution:screen size ratio as far as I'm concerned. You can't even pick out individual pixels, it's a thing of beauty. Now, SAMOLED enthusiasts will say the screen is smaller so the resolution isn't actually that great and blah blah blah, but as someone who owns a Nexus S (mostly) without regrets, I still say I think the Retina Display is damn attractive, especially when it comes to displaying very fine patterns and text on solid backgrounds.
Whether Retina or SAMOLED is preferable depends on equal parts usage habits and user preference, I'd say, but the truth is (to my eye anyway) yes, individual pixels stand out more and solid-color backgrounds (especially white ones) and fine details look inferior on the SGS (Nexus S included). I'm not an iPhone fan, but I give credit where it's due, and smaller screen though it may be, it's still purdy.
I dunno, the terrible text rendering is enough to make me want to get a Droid or something, but I really don't fancy throwing my weight behind a handset that doesn't support openness and updates like the Nexus S.
I wonder if what I really want is to try and find an SLCD Nexus One...?

It is the PENTILE matrix of the SAMOLED screen which is to blame, not the AMOLED technology. There are RGB AMOLED screens, take the Nokia N8 for example. Pentile is what causes text to look fuzzy. People who don't notice it and say the screen is just as sharp (text-wise) as a normal LCD just have bad vision, simple as that. =)

Yes exactly. This isn't guessing, its straight fact. Just Google search the term "nexus pentile pixel layout" and read the professional articles discussing the tech and its pros and cons. Text just looks fuzzy, but you make up for it in other areas. Trade off you need to pick.
Got my phone a few hours ago. Speed is really nice, battery already looks to be as impressive as I thought it would be (2.5 hours of playing with it continually and it hasn't budged), and it overall just feels like a well constructed quality device.
The screen however is another thing. The biggest problem is the colors are washed out, and the contrast seems to be pretty bad too. Going to play with a store demo tomorrow, hopefully I just got a bum one, but I'm getting the feeling after stuffing everything else in there they decided a to cut costs with a low quality lcd.
Really its qhd or super amoled? I wanna buy one but needs to match or be better then my nexus s screen.

The resolution is qhd, 960x540, which is nice, you get used to having the extra resolution real quick. The panel however is just a regular lcd, not amoled.

The qHD screen looked really damn good from the demo I saw in the store. I put it up against my IP4 screen, which was admittedly a little better (crisper and a little brighter), but the Atrix screen easily takes a close second from any device I've seen so far.
The color of screen is a huge disappointment to me.
Yeah people are saying you can't expect the vividness of the captivate. That's obvious, they're completely different kinds of screen the atrix's screen was never going to be as vivid. I'd just like the colors to actually be the correct shade, yellow is especially bad.
I turned auto brightness off and jacked it up to about 50%, helped the colors, but doing that really makes the pentile "matrix" show up.
I think the screen is pretty damn good.
The captivates S AMOLED is overaaturated compared to the LCD screen of the Atrix. qHD is just a higher resolution screen.
I have the captivate, my room mate just got the Atrix. I too am extremely disappointed in the screen quality. Still, everything else about the phone is great so far.
The screen is akin to the droidX screen which is terribly washed out and unsaturated. I doubt I'll ever have a display as nice as the super amoled for a long time since I don't like samsung. their stuff is all cheap feeling
First of all samsung is a pretty well regarded company in terms of overall quality of their hardware. Secondly, any sort of oled display will oversaturate colors, and you have become used to that. Any photoeditor/photographer will tell you that between the 2 displays, the Atrix will produce to most accurate color reproduction.
I have a Nexus One, S, and Atrix 4g that came in today.
Side by side, the Atrix's screen leaves a lot to be desired IMO. My Nexus S screen's black are so much crisper on the same settings and same extra wallpaper with flat black.
Other than that, my Nexus S just simply looks sexier as a phone but I am really enjoying the functionality of my Atrix. Sticking with Atrix since I'm stuck on ATT unless an ATT Nexus S comes out.
This is very, very disappointing news. I really wanted this phone but not if it has a sub-par screen. That's the most impressive thing about my SGS. It's the one thing Samsung got absolutely right. And I'm not willing to settle for less. Some say the colours are over saturated but I would take it's screen every single time over the IP4's. And considering the SGS2 is coming with an ever better screen... Well, it's beginning to look like those bastards are getting my money again.
Depressing.
This is very bad news to hear, I was really looking forward to yhis phone, but im too used to amoled screen, moto has to come up with sumthing similar
Screen brightness/contrast is one thing (amoled vs lcd)
resolution is another... 800x480 is overplayed and ugly, nothing has challenged the iphones retina yet
The atrix is a first in higher resolution, and I think thats a winner for me
This comes down to personal preference. The atrix screen to me is far better than the captivate and nexus simply because it doesnt exaggerate colors. I cant stand the over saturation on the SMOLED screens. Its literally brutal to look at.
the screen is not bad at all, you people are exaggerating
the camera on the other hand is kinda ... meh ....

the galaxy s 2 supposedly has a more natural colors, lets wait and see
800x480 resolution fail. One reason its difficult to look at those screens.

Would love for the sgs2 to have a higher res though.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Sitting next to my Captivate, the blacks look washed out, but text looks way better. The higher res is nice and Im willing to give up the darker blacks.
Not to mention that my GPS locks in under 5 seconds and I didnt have a reboot yet.
Once you fully switch over and use the Atrix a bit, you wont notice the black level.
... Not enough to make me regret my purchase of the HTC One.
My previous phone was a S3, which I absolutely loved and had me seriously excited about the S4. However, holding the one I knew which one to go for. Had my one for about 2 weeks now, and I love it but had that niggling worry that I'd regret my decision.
Today, that worry was cleared up.
The Samsung rep visited us today with an s4. and I got to play with it for a short while. Yes, the ability to interact with the screen without touching it is pretty cool, but apart from the lock screen I started getting frustrated with it (kept touching the screen). The health app is very nice, and laid out really well, but like many of the other features, its just not something I need or want.
The actual UI felt laggy, like it was running slower that 24fps. Switching through home pages on both devices at the same time and it just looked smoother on the One. The Samsung rep said he felt otherwise but he is paid to say that
The screen on the S4, in my opinion is much nicer than the one on my One. Granted, the One has quite a dark coloured interface and the S4 has a very colourful vibrant interface, but I just felt the colours were much more alive than on the One.
The build quality is nice on the S4, with all completely uniform gaps around the device, where as the one has gaps etc. However, the S4 does indeed feel cheap to hold. The texture of the plastic doesn't feel amazing, the weight is nice but just lacks that... premium feel.
I know most of these points (if not all) have been covered on reviews etc. but I thought it might be nice to put my 2 pence in as a HTC One owner and previous Samsung user. I do not regret my purchase and still feel I have bought the better device for my own needs and wants.

Post on s4 forums .
To be fair I'd love a display with a bezel like the S4 but wouldn't sacrifice the quality of the screen in the One for a S4 display.
The thing is..the screen on the S4 is OLED so the colours will look far more vibrant but, they wont be accurate and its a pentile display. I am quite keen to get my hands on an S4 just to see what its like.
I would say the HTC One is like a Rolls Royce Phantom and the S4 like a Nissan GTR.
Goof choice. I was on deciding which phone to get for a month. Chose the HTC one . Boom sound is awesome. Sense is pretttyyyyy compared to touchwiz. For 649 vs 750 for a s4, it was a no brainer for me. Also im going to sell hundreds of s4 throughout this year anyways lol

Some nice info there mate! I think the only thing i prefer on the S4 is the AMOLED display.
Can i ask a question? Before i do, i know the S4 has improved ALOT on the PPI on the display, however, when i had the S3 i also had my One X, when holding them together, the screen on the One X was such much clearer! Much harder to see the Pixels, but on the S3 the pixels stood out like a sore thumb? Was this something you noticed on the S4 compared to the One? Or have they dramatically improved on this and its now similar to HTC? This is something i would like to know.

I was curious about this too, as I had hopes AMOLED had been improved. But honestly I see the same flaws as on earlier iterations:
Dirty whites (turquoise), even in film mode (early measurements reported accurate color temperature, but if you look at it, it is clear that RGB balance is off) - most colorimeters can't measure OLED correctly.
Quite a bit dimmer than the best LCD displays
Discoloration with off axis viewing
Are you sure you prefer the AMOLED screen? I have had an AMOLED for the last 2 years and I can't look at them anymore. AMOLED were OK when LCD's were dimmer, but now the gap is huge.
Honestly, if you can, try browsing the same web pages in parallel on the S4 and the One. It is literally "night and day". It doesn't need to be outdoor. Even in the store the HTC One's screen strikes you as the more vibrant one. I will likely be measuring the S4's screen myself because I don't believe those early measurements that showed a 6500K color temperature. The screen has a green push even in film mode...

I also saw that!!! I was very surprised by this considering my S2 had a smooth experience. I don't know if the overclocking created voltage throttling but it was as you said, laggy and reminded me of the HTC One X when it first started. The browsing experience was horrible.
Are people here actually really paying attention to the S4 screen characteristics?
Firstly, pentile is IRRELEVANT at this PPI.
Second, colour accuracy is good and excellent in the Adobe RGB and Movie modes respectively. Whites are FAR more accurate than the HTC One.
Maximum brightness is less than the One, however sunlight legibility is essentially equivalent due to decreased screen reflectance.
Some fresh reading at Display Mate about it, for those who aren't satisfied with the several 'early' measurements taken by a number of sites.
I know everyone in this forum wants to straight up believe the HTC One has a far superior screen, but it just ain't so folks. Don't get me wrong, the One also has a truly excellent screen, but I just don't see its screen as being a selling point or differentiator in comparison to the S4 screen (neither do I think the S4 screen should be used as a rationale to buy an S4 over an HTC, they're both excellent).
The new oled screen in the S4 is amazingly good. It's actually far superior to the S3 screen.
I played with it on Sunday and I like it.
It's really nice and it will definately sell really well. I love the fact that they added easy mode. This will be such a great way to get noobies to switch to a smartphone($$).
I still prefer the One and I hope it does well. I feel like the One is meant for a different type of user. Samsung is for the mass and the HTC is for those who care.

I have seen the display mate contribution. I like their approach but I don't agree with their conclusions (and it should be noted they have been fierce promoters of OLED displays since the Galaxy S came about).
For one, they fail to mention that even though the measured white color temperature is close to 6500K, the whites actually suffer from greenish cast - so pentile does matter, as there is a discoloration depending on how you look at the screen, and sadly, looking straight at the screen shows a turquoise veil whereas looking more from the side seemed to clean the screen a little from its dirty whites.
Second, the auto-adjust brightness feature taxes the battery so much that no one in their right mind will use it on the go.
When measuring pentile OLED displays it is important to note:
The orientation of the meter has an impact on the measurement, especially on screens with asymmetric structure such as pentile screens...this is something that I would like to quantify on the S4 when I get a chance
Colorimeters will not measure OLED displays correctly out of the box (this point is not relevant here, though, because I think Displaymate used CS-200 spectrophotometer)
So the theory is one thing, but the practice is completely different story. Please believe me that when I saw the measurements made by Displaymate and others I was quite enthusiastic (my S2 does not track as accurately). But while testing both screens in a real life situation, it became very clear to me the AMOLED screen did not live up to its alleged qualities, even in film mode.
Regarding peak brightness, HTC One also has an adaptative brightness mechanism with peak brightness at 530cd/m², but in daily use it is more around 460cd/m². Regardless, the lack of brightness is not totally offset by the better reflectance value, so OLED displays still are poorer performers outdoor and it is even worse indoor under moderate lightning as the S4 does not tap into its peak brightness at any time...
So my question to you. Have you been to a shop to compare both devices and if so, can you in good faith maintain that the HTC One's display does not trounce the S4's AMOLED? The difference was shocking to me. At first I thought it was down to my particular unit but seeing as someone is reporting the same experience, I think this is the screen as it is on any S4 device.

That's true, I wouldn't even bother nitpicking on S4's screen. The only concern could be AMOLED tends to deteriorate faster(which is impossible to tell right now), otherwise I don't see a big con on S4 screen. I feel more comfortable with LCD but hey , a well-calibrated AMOLED isn't bad at all. it's just about preference.
Honestly, if anyone could tell a difference between 440/460 ppi, or even 720p/1080p on a phone, and I'll consider you the "God's eye". I got a phone with 330 ppi (darn it was good at that time) three months ago, and I could not easily tell the difference from my nexus7(~220ppi).

Don't forget the common issue with ugly screen burn in that most people experience with AMOLED from Samsung, pretty big issue as its a matter of when not if and sometimes happening inside of a month, don't even need your screen on for this to happen.
Noidea why this hasn't been mentioned and really should be on the side of the box as a warning.

Pentile doesn't matter so much because of resolution but more because of the greenish discoloration it produces. Dynamic or Film mode has no impact, it is just an inherent flaw. Sure you can get used to it but you come back to an LCD screen you realize what you have been missing out on.
