Im gunna paint this phone soon! :) [edit* help plz?] - Epic 4G General

I decided to paint the back battery cover and screen bezel of this phone gloss black so everything matches and is glossy im going to use high heat engine enamel because it has a kind of rugged rubbery texture to it and ive alrfeady succesfully painted a black bery torch with it i will post picks as soon as i am done maybe even a video of the bezel during the painting.
Edit**** okay so im not sure if the paint will melt the plastic can anyone confirm wether or not usuing rustolium on plastic is a bad idea.

I think itl hold up pretty gud engine enamel goes on moving parts to and its gotta handle the vibration without chipping so im sure it can take a little bending and sliding in and out of my pocket.

Have you tried vinyl dye? I don't know about gloss, but it does great for colors and is very durable because it goes on from the inside out.

Well if im not mistaken i do beleive our screen bezels are either aluminum or die cast metal (highly unlikely). They r prolly plastic tho

I have sprayed rustoleum on plastic lawn chairs. It did not melt but also did not adhere too well. It peeled a little too easily.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

Hmmm well its engine enamel wud that make any difference?
Edit* i decided to do a mock up paint job i took the battery cover of an old phone that is plastic and painted it im gunna see see what happens
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA

cool, let us know

It will not melt the plastic at all. U could get some gloss black paint for plastic. They sell it at walmart in the automotive section. It does bettter with the flexing of the plastic and will hold up better.

The mock up went flawlessly i didnt let it dry completly but enough so that.i cud pick it up and touch it and there was no peeling so i just painted my back cover (was super nervous ) looks like it came out okay

Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA

Hmm. Wish I saw this earlier. But in case you feel like doing another one, consider using an adhesion promoter.
My preferred choice is Bulldog, which comes in an aerosol or liquid form. On a small scale project like this one, the aerosol form would probably be beneficial. A quick little 101: Regular automotive paint doesn't stick well to plastic surfaces, and most of the paint is manufactured towards a metal-base (hence, engine enamel). The goal of the adhesive promoter is once you've scuffed up your surface, the adhesion promoter does it's job with your plastic base (ABS, urethane, polyurethane, etc..), but also acts as a flex agent. That way, once the part moves/flexes, your paint won't go with it and chip/flake off (yes, chipping and flaking applies even if you clearcoat).
Anyhow, the stuff works great. Haven't had any issues with any surfaces that I've painted. Granted, they were all motorcycle fairings, bumpers, and aircraft body parts.
Either way, with the amount of flex the battery cover gets, I don't see why it wouldn't benefit from using that before/as a primer coat.

Not to shabby if i do say so myself i get compliments on my mysterious semi debranded cell phone now

The day I took my screen protector off to put a new one on my phone hit my bedframe and the part where the lightsensor is has a small crack. I haven't been able to live with myself because of it lol.

The fact that the Epic's screen is super strong didn't deter me from getting a screen protector. I get upset for the inevitable air bubble(s) stuck inside the seal. Can't imagine how I'd get if I scratched the screen. I am truly sorry for the scratch :*(
If it's any consolation I'd almost trade a scratch (the Gorilla Glass is amazing) for the physical defects my Epic *does* have: chipped chrome, a flaking edge around the side of the plastic rim that superglue can't seem to fully stop and most of all screen burn in from the damn status bar. I'm wondering how easy or difficult it'll be to use TEP to get a refurb or if I should even bother.
i got a scratch like a week after i bought my epic
i dont even know how. one day i took it out my pocket and it had a big scratch.
I coulda sworn there was gorilla glass on this phone but either there isnt or gorilla glass is ass
especially since my epic always has a dedicated pocket. i never put my electronics with anything else.
I had my hero for a year and the screen never got scratched. EVERYTHING else did, but not the screen lol i even dropped it in train tracks and when i picked it up, only the end button had a little mark on it. the screen was great
i dropped my iTouch about 3 feet and it SHATTERED...but still worked for some odd reason lol
It took me a year with no screen protector to scratch it. Not even sure how. It's on the edge. Doesn't bother me except WHEN ITS RIGHT THERE IN MA FACE!
Also I had the first gen iphone way back when and that thing cracked after 6 months. Epic fail

Got my first scratch last week, got my 2nd, 3rd and 4th last night. Slid right out the holster and onto the mean DC streets. Picked it up dusted it off, kept it moving.
I shattered the screen after an accidental 10 ft flight across the bar on my bday when i was pulling it out of my pocket take a pic. Lost my grip. Bought and ActiveX after. Otherwise i like to keep it in the pocket with the keys and loose change for safety. No screen protector.

A big reason is that AT&T doesn't offer insurance on the iPhone (or didn't, I don't know about now). Makes one appreciate the TEP a bit more when you see one of those poor souls.

Thanks...I had to replace the glass because it was cracked. I took it apart (there are YouTube vids out there to break it all down). Once it was apart, I sanded it down with a medium grit and a fine grit sand paper cleaned it up, taped down all the important parts. Sprayed two coats of pink Rustolium painter's touch and finished with two more coats of matte clear coat let it dry for several hours, 24-48 may be better cause I chipped a little corner of paint off.

Yes, all the parts are, just be cautious buying the ones from China, they take weeks to get in and the paint quality is sub-standard

It is if u have the atmel screen like mine, gorilla glass is however only scratch resistant against metal and no silica like sand and it cracks easy at certain drop angles because of its density so it doesn't have alot of give its used in phones just to protect from scratches when put in purses and pockets with keys and change sand how ever will wreck it and a drop to the corner or at the right angle will shatter it quick

They got hypercolor paint? Where do I find this? I was gonna use the flip flop color changing paint that changes colors in the light but some heat color changing would look cool on the battery door and screen bezel where it gets hot unevenly so it would make patterns in the paint as it heated up

It`s a glass phone! It will scratch no matter how you try to protect it! Eventually every phone will scratch!
I don't use the OEM bumper but after a few days inside a generic tpu case, I also noticed scratching on the upper part of the chrome bezel. Inevitable in suppose, with dust able to get under the lip of the case and the chrome being so soft and vulnerable to damage.
I've been using mine since 18/12. Used a tpu case for 1st 10 days, and the original plastic protectors to date. In my pocket, on table, in car = no scratches to speak of.

The silver bezel will scratch even with the utmost protection, unfortunately, these things scratch, you might want to look into screen protectors for the front and back and also use the bumper, that's what i have done and it's keeping my N4 pretty scratch free!

My apologies for not replying sooner. I've been busy with work and other things, and just plain forgot to post these! Oops.
Any how, I don't want to appear like a whiny baby who's blindly bashing the phone. I realize that chrome *anything* scratches readily. Be it metal, plastic, or whatever material you like. It's why I generally don't like chrome on anything I own.
But since you asked, here are some brutally horrible pictures I took of some dust underneath the lip of my case, and the marks it leaves behind. It's pretty minimal, but the phone is only a few weeks old, so I'm sure it'll get worse over time. I'm not worried however, because this phone will always have a case on it. And a screen protector, which I realize I applied too low. I wanted to make sure it cleared the lip of the case and wouldn't get peeled up.
Excuse the quality. I took them with my Gnex and a flashlight while laying in bed, so they're out of focus and the white balance is off.

As an addendum to my post, I'm sure regular daily cleaning of the inside of the case and exterior of the phone will minimize or eliminate this, but I'm kind of a wash and wear kinda guy. My stuff gets used and abused so I expect this sort of thing to happen eventually.
I won't mention what the Otterbox Defender did to the plastic bezel of my poor Gnex.
Wow! That's truly awful.
I feel your pain, esp as I keep mine in my pocket etc with no case for these last 2 weeks, just front and rear protectors that came with it. I have no scratches or marking at all. However, I've always made a point of keeping my phone in a different pocket to keys, coins etc.

I thought about maybe using some super fine polishing compound but you should be careful to not get anything on the display...
My bezel has some minor (really minor) stratches which can only be seen directly under a lamp, so everything is perfect for me (no bumper, protectors or anything, naked phone for 1 month).
But out of curiosity does anyone know if the chromebezel can be "easily" replaced? From teardown pictures I'd say it looks like it is not really possible or worth the hassle... I guess the whole frame has to be replaced which means new display or atleast display change with heating and all that fun stuff...
No matter what u do u will scratch the chrome bezel. Ive had a case on mine since day one an mine has minor scratches from dust. This is why i hate chrome on cellphones. U just have to live with it

If people hate the back cover, why not just buy a new one?

I mean seriously a plastic back cover is stopping some people from buying the phone? You know what you can do is buy a metal replacement back cover or what ever one you want and just take the existing one off and put the new one on in 5 seconds.
I don't understand the complaining here, if you don't like that glossy back... buy one you do like!

Don't forget battery life & processor
What I hate about a metal or glass phone is you have to be careful with it and suddenly the phone becomes horrible to use because you're always scared of scratching. So you get a case and it makes the phone twice as big and way uglier than the GS4 is by default.
With the plastic back cover, it covers the whole rear of the phone that it sits on, so it does it's job properly. Unlike the GS2 which has that big bump at the bottom which is the bit that gets scratches and you cannot replace easily. So you can scratch the **** out of the back of the GS4 and it doesn't matter cause you just buy a new one for a fiver off ebay. The other thing I love is I bent my GS2 back cover in half and it just sprung back and was fine, I'm guessing the GS4 is the same material.
Almost every smartphone owner I know has a case on their phone. Metal body of phones never see the light of the day.

Seriously though, I'm sure there will be better non metal back covers. One disadvantage of metal back covers is the loss of signal and NFC.

It's not most people it's just loud people, most people don't see a phone as symbol of their status and thus just want their phone made of an efficient material, you can get a Ho in the UK for around £26 pm roughly £2.50 a week more than you can get a Samsung Ace on contract, where's the perceived status in a phone an unemployed person could easily afford.

[Mod] Made speaker grills black

So................
Here is the story:
I dented the back of my HTC One and literally could not believe it. I had only had it for a week and im so careful with my phones.
So I tired a few ways to remove the dent without taking the phone apart. Like heating the dent up and then putting something cold on it. This helped a little bit however I could still see this dent starring at me. So I took drastic measures.
I tried to take the phone apart. This didn't work to well and I ended up scratching up the speaker grills in the process.
So now my beautiful new One has a dent in the back and scratches on the grills on the front. I felt like crying.
I decided to take the hard decision to try and cover these scratches up and decided to spray paint the grills matte black.
This is how it turned out:

Looks quite stealthy however I feel it could be better so I'm going to try and see if I can get some dark glass cut in the same shape and replace the grills.
Still have my dent, but I guess I'll have to live with it.
Hi reeco, plz have a look at slickwraps. They got good skins for speakers also
I do like the black give a very different look

You should put a case on the phone now, I think it would look sick with the black grills, and it would cover up your dent

You covered the sensor with the paint
Hot heat and dry ice may pull the dent back out.

Yea I tried that as mentioned above it worked a little, but it's still visible unfortunately.
I have a slickwrap front and back skin coming so hopefully this will help.
Yea I also did cover up the sensor, but I always use my phone at a constant brightness so no biggie.
I'm hoping some 3rd party grills will show up on ebay soon. Hopefully in black. Because it looks awesome.

Is the proximity/light sensor working properly? It seems to have been covered by the paint!

What's the material type you used? Black faux leather?
no offense. but the phone is beautiful already. that's pretty ugly :crying: and you painted over the sensor? I would have left the scratches lol. or buffed them out

Does anyone make clear protectors for that area?
It looks like that area is soft and is prone to scratches so a clear protector on that area sounds like a good idea
Especially if you are like me and have a a screen protector and also in a case it leaves those areas exposed

Thanks for posting the pics! I also did this last night - partially because I messed up one of the grille holes while trying to clear them out, and partially because I thought it looked interesting. I went with a matte paint too from Tamiya (model paint). I like the matte texture to prevent smudges and it's working great for that (especially the top one when I put it up to my ear!). Cut a couple of pieces of masking tape to cover the sensor window and camera lens so everything works fine. I only put a couple of coats on so that the grilles still look flat. Turned out pretty decent I think
