I've been trying out some of the custom ROMs here, and while they're decent work, I'm afraid they're all just too damned buggy. I've decided to revert to a stock ROM. Problems is, of course--I can't find one. There's a thread with links for original stock roms, but the links for AT&T Focus 1.3 don't work.
Anybody have a working ROM I can migrate back to? I'll just wait for the official update from Microsoft's engineers.
Thanks!

Links for AT&T Focus 1.3 work, I just checked (depositfiles and Netload). However, not the links in the original post but these (read the end of the thread always).
There are NO stock NoDo or Mango roms. Only custom

Thank you too . I'm surprised there are no stock Mango or NoDO ROMs. Surely there were devices shipped with these ROMs installed natively?

Hi
I just got unlocked HTC Hero. I'm unable to download firmware upgrade from HTC because (as far as I understand) the phone is T-Mobile branded.
Will I be able to upgrade after I root it?
Can I use firmware posted at this link?
Thanks.
I also want to know this...
But I believe (don't take it for granted) that you can simply use one of the original RUU files on that link and update your Hero with them. No need to root it or anything... This is what I think, I'm not sure about it.
Well, since there are other people interested to know I will answer my own question.
I just successfully rooted and upgraded my T-Mobile Hero to Modaco custom ROM providing a great improvement to UI speed (and many other things I'm not yet aware). I used the following guides from The Unlockr.com for rooting and upgrading:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/

Hey Jackhab,
Appreciate the postback with the solution to your own problem but was wondering how old your Hero was? I've just ordered one from Tmob which I expect to arrive tomorrow and am wondering if the steps will be as simple for me.
Not sure where you live but I'm in the UK so just hoping they don't come already updated.
Why not go to the t-mobile forum and all your answers including links to correct firmwares are there!

I bought mine a couple of weeks ago on eBay from some guy in California, the device is from Germany and I live in Israel (quite a trip this poor cell phone made ). I don't think you'll have any troubles with yours as long as you follow the *written* instruction (the videos are good to get the idea in general).
I also noticed this Unlockr guy(s) is a very nice person and answers to every single comment people post (see comments below the videos) so even if you do have a problem he/she will be ready to help.
Just two things to note.
First, the upgrade erases *all* your settings so don't spend days customizing it's GUI (it's so easy with Hero) just to find you need to do all over again. Upgrade as soon as you can. It will also give you better UI experience.
Second, I tried to be smart and backed up the system settings with MyBackup application. After I restored them the phone went into an endless boot and I had to go through upgrade again. If you need only backup non-system settings, bookmarks and such.
@jackhab
T Mobile ROM as in the sticky thread should be fine but if you are after rooting your device than it is poinless as you may be flashing your choice of rom......most probably MCR....

Once recovery flashed ,you can happily flash 2.8, which is excellent.
And after that dont forget to update radio with latest for excellent results.

Upgraded radio will be better than last one for signal strength etc.

Hello I just received a un-rooted mytouch but it is stuck on 1.5 even though the previous user has been using it on the network for the past few months. Is there somewhere I can download the latest official 1.6 update to flash onto this device?
just one click root it and flash a donut rom. It will only take like 15 minutes, and with everything else that you will be able to do with it, it would definitely be worth it.
Manually install 1.6 update on mytouch:

I tried these instructions but get an error when attempting to flash. Also the ROM he has linked is only 20mb?
is that link the REAL official t-Mobile Donut 1.6 update?? I dont understand why there are not numerous links and sources to the update, I need the real update cause i am test driving the phone, I wanna root it and try it thaqt way, but eventually in a few days im gonna have to give it back to my buddy, he already was buggin about my rooting it, i mean i guess if decide to buy it thats one thing, but i would like to bring it back to Official 1.6 status if not
Its weird usually when anykind of firmware or operating system is releaseed everyone has tons of dwnload links and various sources to get it, but i mean its weird i can only find that one link thats posted above?? I see there is a stock build here in XDA, but says a few tweaks but generally stock, im curious if I need to have the phone rooted to even install that ROM?? this ROM here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549755

I am new to the forum, so please be gentle...
I recently rooted my HTC Hero (Sprint) and was wondering if I will be required to unroot when it comes time (whenever it will be) to upgrade to the official 2.1 release. I guess my question really is, will the release automatically undo the exploit that gives me root permissions, or will I have to do it before the upgrade will install?
Why not wait for roms from the 2.1 update..so u dont have to unroot.

The official release is going to unroot your phone and it will not matter whether you are rooted or not.
Also, if you decide to run the official RUU you may not be able to gain root access again. Most likely a method will be found, but there are no guarantees.
Another alternative is to wait a day after the official release and run one of the custom ROMs here that will utilize the official version, but maintain your ability to keep root.
Also, the process is not automagic. The update will have to be downloaded on your PC or you will have to go to a Sprint Store/Bestbuy to have them do the update for you.
Don't worry about the message you get saying an update is available. It's won't install it self.
But +1 for waiting 24 hours for a dev rom.

Um don't u mean probably within two or three hours after official update is out. U know the rom devs will not wait a whole day. Lol
Forgive my ignorance...I used asroot2 to root my Hero vice flashing the ROM, will this make a difference? I have not actually loaded a ROM yet. I downloaded ROM Manager and intend to use it, is it worth while or is there a better way out there?

Rom Manager only works if you have flashed ClockWork recovery.
Most our devs just do AmonRa updates.
asroot2 is what we all used (for sprint users at least...)(or some variation in the implementation of it)
Pretty much asroot2 allows root access until you flash a rom that has su installed in to the /bin directory. After you have flashed a rom, asroot2 is useless and actually probably removed, never really paid attention.
No appoligies needed for your questions as they have merrit. But searching the forum for "unroot for 2.1 update" would yeild most of these answers.
So I've got the recovery image...which ROM would be recommended to just experiment with? This will be the first time I've done this.
Look for cb.cp-v69 it is the fastest, most stablest Rom everest. Est. ;p

Each of the ROMs will have their own distinct look and their own advantages. I would take a day or so to lurk around the Hero CDMA Android Development
forum and read through some of the [ROM] threads and read the changelogs, and what the forum members have to say about it. You will benefit from using any of the given ROMs, but you may find that you like a certain look, or feature that only one of them provides. I'm a flipzmode fan myself, so I run a few variations of fresh ROMs and ROMs based of of flipzmode's work. All of the ROMs that I have tried from each of the ROM devs have been awesome.
Using's Dr.Death FOTA fetcher (found here), I've compiled a list of all the shipped roms and their respective OTA updates as of 21/02/2011
I've writen an script that checks all known RUU and OTA version, if it finds an OTA not known, it will be marked as FOUND NEW VERSION ###
WARNINGS: DO NOT FLASH THOSE OVER A ROOTED ROM OR YOU'LL LOSE IT!
All Froyo (3.x) updates includes an new HBOOT 1.01 and can't be S-OFF
All versions above 1.x can't be rooted, if you update, you'll have to downgrade the phone
OTA updates are patches only and can be used exclusively for the rom version it was built for.

No idea, it's the letter after the rom version, I thought I'll leave it, could it be R for Radio? I'll go check the content of those OTA and see if there's any similarity and/or difference.
For download, no problem, I can have them uploaded to my server.

I'd suggest you not update to 2.05 because of the SMS sorting bug unless you use a 3rd party messaging app, when you open a conversation, it starts at the top, oldest first.
If you do still want 2.05, you can grab the HTC asia WWE 1.31.707.2, which then gives you OTA update 1.31.707.3 and then 2.05.707.1
Or one of the Vodafone 1.31.x or 1.32.x
But the best right now is 2.03, I'd just grab 2.03 stock rooted or flash the RUU, in which case you'll loose root and have a harder time to get it back if you choose too
2.03 stock, rooted

but i am using asia_india rom ... for that 1.32 rom doesnt have any ota update ...
Hello everyone,
I'm new here. Haven't done to my Legend anything yet but am considering and I'll read more threads about it on this very good forum. Would like to have Froyo and wifi tethering because of my android tablet.
However, I just thought to mention (maybe this is not the place; if so, I'm sorry) that I run 2.05.720.1 which is not on the list. If you want it and if I can, I wouldn't mind grabbing it and posting it here/sending it to Kwen or whoever will update the list. I haven't noticed any bugs or problems with this build apart from the obvious that it's not Froyo. That's the only reason why I haven't gone cyanogen yet.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi, all.
First timer here. Got the wife a Hero for X-mas. Notice it's slow sometimes, so thought I'd upgrade. It's on 1.5 now. I ultimately want to get on Android 2.1. However, in the phone settings info screen, there is no update option. I thought this might be due to the firmware not being up-to-date so was going to start by upgrading that. But I don't know which ROM to use.
I bought the unlocked phone in Switzerland, but it was clearly imported from the UK. I see on the HTC site there are several ROMs which are carrier specific. There seems to be a generic ROM on the bottom of the HTC page which says "ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero" with no specific carrier. This one looks to be the generic ROM, which I should use. Is that the case?
I've tried looking for a general tutorial, but they all also seem to be tied to carriers (Sprint, T-Mobile, etc).
Cheers.
Hi Bozo,
firstly do not be tempted to update your firmware to the latest one on the HTC web site, if you do that and also update to the HTC 2.1 ROM, you will not be able to ROOT your Hero without firstly downgrading again.
ROOTing your Hero will allow you to go beyond 2.1 to 2.2 ROMs, these are mostly in development at the moment but I've tried several so far and have settled on Android Version Froyd Villain1.6 (2.2.1) which has been great for several weeks with no crashes and plenty quick.
Hope this helps!
There are plenty of web guides on how to ROOT your Hero also Youtube videos.

Thanks for the reply. Is it the firmware that prevents rooting, the ROM, or both?
I've seen several of the videos on rooting. But again, they often reference a specific carrier model Hero, mostly Sprint.
I'd check out this post. Ignore the stuff about updating RADIO though.

There are many great ROMs to choose from; CM6.1, Froyo 2.2.1 Final (by Elelinux), FroydVillain 1.7.0 My personal preference would be Elelinux's one.

I second that!
I am a flash-aholic and have tried nearly all the 2.3 roms. By far the best is cronos 1.0.1 It is uber fast (faster than any 2.1 I have tried) and has a brilliant forum community, with the dev responding quickly to any bugs.
Have fun!
Why shouldn't he update to the official 2.1 Rom? It is said to be rootable with Universalandroot! (see http://blog.23corner.com/2010/08/30/universal-androot-1-6-2-beta-5/#more-407) So getting the official 2.1 would also be a reasonable step towards more speed!
And I don't see a downside of doing so...
