[Q] micro98 on Nook Color (w/ Bochs?) - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am receiving my new Nook Color in a month (as a gift), and would like to know if anyone has tried - or is willing to try - Bochs on NC running 98lite's "micro98" (litepc.com/98micro.html).
People have argued that Win98 would not be doable, but micro98 installs just the operating system - it's a 50MB install and it runs on hardly any RAM at all. I have the software, but I don't have the NC!

[Q] B&N Nook Color Original App Interface on Rooted Nook Color?

I tried searching and could not find an answer. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, etc.
I have my Nook Color rooted but am trying to find a way to use the B&N Original interface for the library that lets you do shelves, etc. Is this possible with a rooted nook or is it only possible with the stock rom?
I would really like to be able to use it if possible. I cannot find any Android readers that does this to my liking.
Thanks for any help.

If you have simply rooted it, then the library is still there as the B&N pop up bar is there with it and it's also in the apps drawer.
If you have installed a different rom, like cm7 or something, then the best you can do is the Nook for android app that B&N makes available on the market. Not sure if it has shelves though.
I did the Honeycomb on SD Card and then ended up doing the CM7 Mod which is on the device itself. Now I am trying to figure out how to for sure get back to the stock rom. I am sure I can do it on mine easily since I was on update 1.1.0. My wifes nook color was at 1.2. This is the one I gotta figure out.
Now will simply rooting it allow me the features of the Android operating system, layout and apps like the CM7 mod does or will it simply just be the nook color part? I am not really sure what is benefited from rooting.
What my perfect goal would be is to benefit from the B&N Nook Color that was there along with the benefits of the Android like CM7 gave.
Is this even possible?
Thanks

Actually, that's kind of the entire purpose of rooting it
Not sure what state your nook is in, but if you want to get back to rooted stock, do the 8 failed starts if you can first to get back there. If you've overwritten that part, you'll need to flash it back - try here.
My recommendation is that unless you can use B&N's restore to go back to 1.2, that you go to a previous version and then do the B&N update to 1.2.
You can run manual nooter 4.5.6 after that to root and you should be good to go. Just make sure and follow the instructions in the main post there.
There will be an update soon, but if 4.5.6 is still the version, then you should follow up by fixing the multi touch preferences

Flandrel, you are exactly at the point I was a couple of days ago!
You can do it, these are roughly the steps I followed.
1. Mine is new so it was already at v 1.2 but you need to go back to stock 1.2 there are threads on the Dev thread on how to do it.
2. Follow the easy steps on how to root it with Manual Nooter (again instructions on the development thread).
3. I overclocked it to 1.1 mhz using the stock OC kernel for 1.2.
4. I installed Nook Home B&N launcher to easily switch between the stock B&N interface to Froyo. Also installed Nook Color app manager from the market to be able to put any android app on the B&N interface screens. Installed Spare Parts to enable correct scaling of all the apps (so they fill all the screen as some of them remain at the phone format initially).
5. I installed ADW launcher, Kindle app adobe reader and all my favorite games.
6. Did some additional tweaks like disabling all the phone services that drain battery life.
The end result: a fast android + B&N experience thanks to XDA!!!! I have the best of both worlds as I find the B&N interface to be good, love the magazines and newspapers!
Out of the box sliding screens and turning pages on the B&N interface felty choppy. After adding the overclock kernel to 1.1 mhz things are smooth !
I know that if I install Phiremod or CM7 internally it would be even faster by I feel right now I have the best solution for my needs!
If you cant find the links to the above PM me and I'll be glad to help out.

In step one you say you were on v1. 2 but went to stock 1.2. Do you mean 1.0.1?
I'd like to be able to do this also and will write a step by step if I can do it.

[Q] Invisible Text in ManualNootered Nook Color

Device Info:
Nook Color running B&N 1.2 (Android 2.2.1)
ManualNooter 4-6-16
OC at up to 1.2GHz using Froyo 1.2 dalingrin OC emmc 090111
Problem: Text in some apps cannot be seen (ie Titanium Backup "Filters" screen).
Observations: This problem seems to happen with B&N Software Versions ABOVE 1.2 (I am currently running 1.2 because of this issue).
Search Results: I've only found mention of this problem (or something close to it) in two places: HERE and HERE.
Recommended Fix or Workaround: NONE
I just inherited a Nook Color about three weeks ago, it was reset to factory defaults (B&N 1.1). The person I got it from was running B&N Software version 1.2 with the latest recommended ManualNootered version (manualnooter-4-6-16) at that time. He could not get B&N Version 1.3 to work right. When I got the Nook, the first thing I did was to update it to B&N 1.3 and root it with the latest ManualNooter procedures, which worked great (the procedures had been updated since the person I got it from had tried to root B&N 1.3). Thanks GabrialDestruir!
One of the first apps I purchased was Titanium Backup. I noticed in Titanium's Filters screen there were Radio Buttons that had no text next to them. I was brand new to Android and had a lot to learn, so I made note of this issue to return to later. When I finally got around to addressing this issue, I discovered others had the same problem, but so far it was not addressed within the development community.
In my experimenting I have crashed and re-rooted the device many times, so I know the problem is consistent. I was becoming frustrated and asked the previous owner if he had the same issue with B&N 1.2. He did not. As of this morning, I have returned to B&N Software Version 1.2 and I can now see all the text that was invisible before - in every app I've tested and remembered had the issue.
The specifications above are the only changes needed to reproduce the problem. As soon as I was up and running, I downloaded Titanium Backup from Market. When I rooted the Nook using B&N Software version 1.2, all text was visible. Following the procedures to get the system up to the same place with B&N 1.3, the text problem reappears (text disappears).
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions for me or if I have forgotten a critical piece of information, please do not hesitate to post what you need here, I will be checking it daily.
Thank you for your time, effort, and help XDA! You've made a complicated procedure very simple.
I am experiencing the same problems with dialog boxes in many apps and widgets. I too have tried to find a solution.

Can I do that with LCD resolution?
This has always been a problem with the stock ROM, IIRC it's because typical Android text is Black and it's White on the stock ROM, therefore by default it's White on White in some apps.
If you don't need the Read to Me kids books or Magazines, use CM7 and the Nook market app, it doesn't have this problem and does much more.

Yea, so far, that's what I figured - the Nook is using a white background and if a program does not explicitly define the background and foreground text colors, but assumes the background is black, this is when the problem occurs.
I guess what I was wondering is if there is a way to change the default background color for the Nooks to black, and the default foreground text color to white. I read somewhere about "theme-ing," though, like I said, I am new to Android, could theme-ing be a solution?
I don't get your second statement. I already use CM7 (but only so far as for booting to use ManualNooter), and I have no idea what "Nook market app" you are referring to, or the Kid Reading stuff - do you meant the stock B&N stuff?. Am I missing a key concept here?
Or, possibly, are you suggesting I use CM7 to install a different ROM and skip the Nooter method altogether? I was actually beginning to research this - I can do without all the B&N stuff, it doesn't work right anyway and I have disabled much of the B&N apps. If flashing a different ROM fixes this and "does much more," I'm all for it. It will just take me doing a little more research and someone confirming this is what you are referring to.

I see! I will have to see if I can dig into the nook a little deeper and see if I can do anything about that. It is annoying but I'm not annoyed enough to change to CM7 yet! Plus I have a People subscription that I am enjoying ATM.
Trasd..You are using CWM to boot to manual nooter. CM7 is something else.

Ah, thank you, I was wondering how some people were runnig higher versions of Android - now I know.
Is it weird I love this stuff?
Well, as they say, back to the drawing board....
EDITED
The theory below is NOT the problem, but I left it up because I cannot delete it and is serves as reminder. Sorry.
ORIGINAL
I have made a discovery; the problem seems to happen, not because of background color assumptions, but when styles are used (an app developer, who was kind enough to debug and redesign his app for me, discovered this).
I am almost to the point in my self-education with Android and Java programming that I can verify this myself, but I am not quite there yet. If someone does verify this, could you please post your findings here?
As you can tell, I haven't flashed the ROM yet, and may not for awhile. It's running OK and I really want to concentrate on programming for the time being.
As more and more developers use styles though, I may not have a choice.

webtop/ubuntu for android/etc?

Is there any way to add webtop or anyting similar to ubuntu for android to the iconia tablet for the hdmi port?
I am trying to use the iconia as a desktop pc with a multi-usb(mouse and keyboard) and my hdmi outport, but it is very difficult without the task bar(no clock, no multitasking, no home or back button) and a reduced screen that cuts a little bit of the edges.
I know that ubuntu for android is a good solution, but even jelly bean- Android (that promises a similar desktop experience) seems closer to release than that. Webtop seems ok, but i find no way to install it to the tablet, just hcks for atrix and motorola stuff.
Anyway, if there is anyway to add it to a rom, or a rom that already has soemthing similar i would really appreciate that information.

Windows 8 Support

As working for Microsoft, Specially with their windows project I found it very difficult to get a proper guidance or troubleshoot their problems when Microsoft stops supporting them.
Some of you might be aware to the fact as Windows 8 pro at 1,999/- INR price tag is coming without any support from Microsoft end and neither you have any trial option to check and decide whether u should buy it or not, It becomes utterly necessary to initiate a small contribution for the great lovers of the Microsoft.
Here what we are trying to do is to get all the answers for your beloved windows 8 and help you with the troubleshooting their causes.
I would also like to tell the moderators: Thanks for deleting my previous thread but it wasn't a direct commercialization what I was trying to do was to make available things which aren't free.
As piracy is strictly neither my policy nor this forum's so we needed to pay to Microsoft and that is what we were charging, it wasn't a product promotion it was making product available at a price which makes it nearly free.
Anyways back to the topic, folks please go ahead with the issues
I just gat the Asus Q200E and im wondering if I want to switch back to Win 7 will it be tough to get drivers or are they similar to the win 8 drivers. Ive onl used windows 8 for four days and will go on trying to get used to it but so far I dont think i will stay with it. I find myself getting to pissed off with it. I am figuring out most of it but its just not for me. Maybe when there is more support int he way of apps I will use it but its too querky for me as it is.

You can always downgrade to the previous versions for the windows, though downgrading to the windows xp would be bit troublesome due to the compatibility issues but windows 7 and 8 more or less share the same architecture for the device driver compatibility so downgrading to windows 7 would not bring you major issues with ur device drivers until and unless you are having TPA module installed in your laptop
and for downgrading please do contact Microsoft for a downgrade key it is absolutely free
Thank you for your help. Much appreciated..

I have this issue with my older computer; 2.2GHz single core AMD athlon 64 (socket 939). I'd be curious as to what is causing this too, but I only have the release preview on that computer. For me, the computer idles at 25% and it just feels really sluggish, like each process in the system isn't running as efficiently as it could. Conversely, a modified XP (unofficially modified: all components but the bare minimum removed and slipstreamed updates / registry improvements) runs perfectly fine on the same hardware. I know XP is faster than 8, and especially so the modified version I use, but it's clear that something is actually not right. The DPC latency isn't terrible, but it's consistently over 1000 microseconds, vs XP which averaged ~15 microseconds. It must be a driver issue I'm guessing? The hardware is old and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the components isn't running well for whatever reason under 8.
I think the issue is true for both x64 and x86, I thought some of my RAM might have been bad so I took them out and switched to 32 bit while I was at it (in case the 32 bit drivers were better).
Actually on my new gaming rig the dpc latency averages exactly 1000 microseconds with 8, and though I suffer no performance issues, this bugs the living hell out of me, knowing I used to have 15!

I would like to add on to your post. Along with the reason you explained there is one more reason as windows 8 is programmed for giving max performance with the min power consumption, due to which at idle CPU tries to enter at low frequency stage and also if you have a very old system this issue arises as mentioned in the above post due to one more reason of HDD.
Windows 8 tries to keep alive threads running in background to save the power but due to CRC in the old HDD this loops the processor

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...indows-8/4e56a425-c685-4ab2-9b23-72b1cab4557e
But I'd like to reduce the steps of doing it to a single click like in a form of VBS or BAT file, how do I do that? And why is Windows 8 behaving like this like that guy said.
Hi dudes, I'm having the same problem as this guy over here.
Everytime I boot up, I have to quickly press "win+D" to get into desktop mode. If not it just hangs at metro start screen and I can do nth about it except "ctrl+alt+del". It just freezes there. Using windows 8 pro. Had this prob since yesterday. It was okay when I installed system updates on 15 Nov up until yesterday. I didn't make any software/hardware installations/updates in between this period of time.
Hope someone can help me out here! Thanks!

In the "good old days" applicaitons would often un-hide the Taskbar so their notification icons could show an updated status and they could ensure it would be seen. I think this method has fallen out of favor, but older applications that haven't been updated could still be sending the commands to the system to show the Taskbar. Is it possible that you have an older app in the notification area that's affecting the Taskbar as described?
Open Task Manager and Regedit.
++ on the Start Menu & select 'Exit Explorer'
or use services.msc to temporarily exit explorer by killing the service "explorer"
In Regedit, navigate to:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop]
delete the value named 'Toolbars'.
In Task Manager, select 'File' -> 'New Task' -> type 'explorer' to restart
the shell.
If that doesn't do the trick, repeat deleting 'TaskbarWinXP' as well. in ur case it might be 'TaskbarWin8'
I've got a lot of old software but I haven't used any of it on my laptop. Something poorly coded may well be the issue, though this behavior is hardly exclusive to "old" software as windows 8 itself seems to actively embrace exactly this: by default the taskbar is auto hidden (this is not true of xp/vista/7) and if something isn't in the foreground and for whatever reason won't take focus, it will raise the taskbar and keep it raised until you click on said program in the taskbar.
I think it actually might be related to internet explorer and it trying to tell me that a download is finished, but gets stuck there. I'm going to see if it happens with IE running and nothing else before editing the registry.
OK I have a good question for you!
Enabled bitlocker on my C:\ drive. This killed the bootable recovery and also 8's ability to "refresh" without a DVD (it could not find the files needed).
How do I move the bootable recovery tools to the system partition? Will this fix the refresh problem? If not, how do I restore 8's ability to refresh without external media?

have u made any changes in hardware or the system software after enabling bitlocker or ur system is running in dual boot
I am sure for one thing mere copying the bootable recovery tools to the system partition won't help.

I don't know how you're not having "this issue" since enabling bitlocker *forces* WinRE to be disabled, including the ability to refresh.
I disabled bitlocker because ReAgentc.exe refused to operate with bitlocker enabled. The only solution I could find was to format the HDD, recreate a bigger system partition, reinstall windows and do things from the fresh install. I suppose I could refresh my custom image from there, assuming it would even work for 8 (the instructions I found were for 7).

these also work for for 8 as I was told in training and specifically for 8 we are still waiting for the manuals
I can't access the windows app store in my wifi network which is secured by a proxy and i have to authenticate to browse. All desktop apps works well but not the windows app store. It asks for authentication bot when i give the username and password to it, it shows "your network proxy does not work with windows store contact your administrator". what should i do to access the microsoft app store.

New Nook HD+ owner here!

Hi all, Just got a Nook HD+ on sale. I know it isn't the newest, shiniest piece of gadgetry and I don't really care. So far I'm digging it, I really like the different aesthetic. (Who puts a hole in the corner of their tablets?!.. really?) and aside from rooting it, which I try to do to every android device I get right off the bat. What else is there?
I see there are a few 10.1/2/3 ROM's out there but what are the actual benefits compared to just using the stock ROM? Also, is there any custom kernels floating around? I'm always a fan of messing with kernel stuff like undervolting/overclocking/governor tweaks/etc.
I think your answers are in each rom development thread. But I'd say cm 10.2 (I didn't try cm 10.1) is much more responsive than stock. I didn't find any kernel out there besides those inside the roms.
I suggest getting the most recent RC3 release of CM 10.1 and in performance settings, set transparency to 16bit and purge assets.
That seems to be the best overall combo.
10.2 has no apparent benefit for the HD+ as far as performance. The trim function has been disabled since not Nook flash friendly for a lot of units and OpenGL 3 is not supported by the chipset in the HD+.
Hmm, OK, ok...
I could have sworn I saw a post here talking about using 10.3 but lurking through the dev thread I don't see it anywhere. I'll keep looking.
Are the nook apps usable on CM roms? I know the launcher won't be but is it possible to use just the reader, library, etc? Thanks for the response guys! Also, anyone familiar with using CM on the Nook, do Hulu, Vudu, Netflix all work also the HDMI-out and bluetooth? These are all things I use and can't lose.
UPDATE: Oh, my bad, the post says "10 1.3" which is a little confusing and I saw it as 10.3

Im new to Tablets (only have a Nook HD+ for acouple weeks ) but not flashing.
Just installed CM 10.1.3 (last night)
One thing which i was after (and the main reason for me) was USB thumbdrive support/storage (link about it) and that worked great.
After, i did install the B&N "store" app (the green 'n' app) and it installed fine (had to install it via .apk found out side of the Google Play (dont know if i can post links to apps at this forum)). With that 'n' app, you can shop the B&N site along with reading a book. Will look later tonight and see if i can install there library app.
Dont know about HDMI (am wondering the same - but not a big deal for me).
As for bluetooth, i tried a Logitech MX5000 ("desktop") keyboard just to see what happens, they made the hand-shake and connected but nothing after that... i did not try too hard though... just wanted to see what would happen. That keyboard is the only bluetooth "device" i have.

I'm pretty sure posting it would be fine because it isn't a paid app and is freely available. If you still leery you could IM it to me, I'd like to give it a try. I have the HDMI adapter and it worked fine with the stock ROM but I'm only getting a blank screen on the TV with 10 1.3. I've read it is working though so I am going to tweak it a little bit to see what the deal is.

I'm in the same boat, just got a new Nook HD+ (came free with my car). I used the stock ROM for a day or so, pretty fast but limited in scope. I've installed CyanogenMod 10.1.3 using the instructions from the dummies thread, it ran fine for about half a day and now suddenly performance is awful. Animations lag, trying to change the settings lags, there's input lag, I have to wait 1-2 seconds for the keyboard to come up, 2-3 seconds to tap on different sections in Settings. I thought maybe I installed too many apps so I tried to wipe it but I can't. "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM still leaves crap behind, Factory data reset in Settings does the same. Now I have 6 GB left of 12.67 GB and nothing installed. Is there any way to fully remove everything?
Edit: some exploration with du in terminal revealed two huge folders, Android/data and Android/obb. Sure enough, there's my missing 6 GB. How does this not get deleted? Does reset mean something else in Android than other mobile operating systems?

Those folders are in your media (sdcard) folder and media does not get wiped in a factory reset. In CWM you need to go to mounts and storage and format 'data and datamedia' in order to wipe your media.
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.
I love my Nook HD+ and that is after trying a Samsung Note 8, a Nexys 2013 and others. Really for the prize you can't beat it!
I have tried pretty much every ROM there is here in XDA both from SDCard and emmc. For my Nook HD+ in particular nothing beats the Stock ROM with Unknown Sources and Root. I also tried Nova, Apex, SPB, Smart, Go EX, and AWD launchers in their Pro versions but the only one that was really fast and had no lagging at all was Next Launcher and that is the one I have know on my HD+.
To be able to use USB OTG (not needed on CM 10 thanks to verygreen) on Carbon, Slim, etc., I used the usbhostswither.apk that is included on Xperia Carbon JB, installed it and worked great. I haven't been able to installed it on my HD+ even with root and unknown sources enable, it gives me a parsing app error. Trying to see if I can installed it and if it workd to turn on and off USB Host on Stock Rom with root.
I tried and now use 3 apps from the forum that really rock, FX Explorer, Gallery Plus and WebSharing Lite.
You are gonna have a blast with your HD+ and now that some at XDA have started to test and port Ubuntu Touch to it, well you won't be without a whole lot of options to mess with your Nook

Hi leapinlar and community, first thanks for all your contributions, they have enable the Stock Rom to be a great alternative for those of us that like many of it features.
I have a problem installing the USBHostSwitcher app on the HD+ rooted and with unknown sources enabled. The weird thing is that I was able to install and use the app successfully when testing emmc Carbon Rom JB and Xperia Tweeked for HD+. I was also able to installed it to other devices like my Galaxy Note II (stock, not rooted).
The Nook installer error on HD+ reads " Parse error" "There is a problem parsing the package".
Is there a way to create a package so I can flash an app (like we do with the Google Apps?
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Even if you can get it to install, I'm not sure it will work on stock. I know verygreen had to mod the kernel to make it work. And I think all the other ROMs like Carbon, etc, use his kernel.
